Americans are infatuated with the stock market. The number of households that own stock has increased from around 20 percent in the early 1980s to over 40 percent today. The market offers the hope of quick wealth and early retirement, and just about everyone who is in the market is looking for an edge, from sources such as CNBC and Wall Street Week to the Beardstown Ladies and "The Motley Fool." So it should be no surprise the most successful investor of our time--Warren Buffett--has been the subject of dozens of books and magazine articles. The value of Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway, has increased from $18 per share in 1965 to over $70,000 per share today. The interest in Buffett has spawned an approach to investing called "Buffettology," which is the subject of a book by the same name written by Buffett's former daughter-in-law, Mary Buffett.

In Buffettology, Mary Buffett, with the help of David Clark, details Warren Buffett's approach to investing. It's a style of investing based on the work of Benjamin Graham and one that requires a quality that most investors lack--discipline. Mary Buffett writes, "As you read through this book you will come to see that having a business perspective on investing is more about discipline than philosophy.... In short, other people's follies, brought on by fear and greed, will offer you, the investor, the opportunity to take advantage of their mistakes and benefit from the discipline of committing capital to investment only when it makes sense from a business perspective.... You will find that almost everything that relates to business perspective investing is alien to Wall Street folklore.

Buffettology examines Buffett's methods for valuing companies and selecting stocks--it even encourages you to buy a calculator and work through the valuation formulas that Buffett uses when researching companies to buy. The book not only serves as a useful guide to understanding how Buffett invests, it's an excellent primer to investing in stocks, whether you plan to become a Buffettologist or not. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards, Business editor

5 out of 5 stars Best stock investing book available. Bar none!.......2007-09-28

If I could only recommend one stock investing book, this would be it! I can't recommend a book any higher. It answers in a way that is easy to understand the two most fundamental questions of investing in the stock market: 1-what kind of stocks should I buy? and 2- at what price? Thank Ms.Buffett and Mr. Clark for publishing this book. It has shaped my every investing decision since reading it more than a decade ago.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Basic Business Knowledge and Investing Skills.......2006-10-16

I read this book several years ago and suddenly feel compelled to write a short review after reading the opinions of several reviewers who have slammed the work.

More than any other business book (and I've read many), this one gave me the fundamental understanding to clearly see the difference between a business selling commodity-type products and services versus those that sell on something less competitive than price. To me, this is a nearly priceless (no pun) bit of understanding for any aspiring investor (or even entrepreneur)to mentally digest and intellectually internalize.

The concepts covered in this book, both the qualitative and quantitative, are clearly explained and easy to understand. I guess this causes some people to scoff at it with the opinion that it's too simplistic. However, if you really study Mr. Buffett's investing history - his philosophy has been pretty simple.

So how come most people won't become a billionaire by reading and applying the concepts taught in this book? Well... duuhhh! I guess we'll have to learn how to buy insurance companies and use the floats created by the payed-in premiums as our investment funds. Mr. Buffett has obviously got the intestinal fortitude and know-how for utilizing the ultimate in OPM. However, I've not seen the evidence that he doesn't use the basic formulas that Mary Buffett so clearly and entertainingly lays out in this book.

This is a great book that can teach you a lot - unless your ego closes off the receptivity of your mind.

1 out of 5 stars Buffettology? The title alone is a JOKE.......2006-09-10

This book is a royal sham - not worth your time. There is little in this book worth reading. For starters, Mary "Buffett" has no right to use that last name... She's no more a Buffett than your gold-digging neighbor. The supposed formulas that she profers as belonging to Buffett in reality have little to do with Buffett's methods or his thinking - he is on record many times as refuting what she claims as his method. What does she say about multi-disciplinary cross-examination of the investment problem set? Nothing. What does she say about how to define a moat and determine its durability? Very little. Instead we get her assumption on growth formulas... just where did she derive that? The family Thanksgiving dinner? Right. Of all the books on Buffett I've read (let's just say it's well into double digits) - this is perhaps the worst...

5 out of 5 stars 5 reasons I love this book.......2006-07-13

1.It uses simple language that helps understand heavy financial concepts.

2.Chapters are short. So its easy to digest things bit by bit.

3.You thoroughly understand the subject as ideas are repeated throughout the book.

4.Compared to `The Intelligent Investor' and Warren Buffett's letters to shareholders, I find this book giving more info about Warren's style of picking companies. It give qualitative and quantitative steps for going company hunting.

5.Concepts like inflation and taxation are beautifully explained.

Good luck and happy reading !

4 out of 5 stars easy to read investment book .......2006-07-05

Benjamin Graham's Intelligent Investor is probably the best book on investing available, but buffetology is the easier version of Graham's, so i love it three times as much. it's so easy that i could read it while laying on the Bali beach in a recent holiday. caution though, maybe because it's so simple it's probably too simple for sophisticated ones out there.

Book Description

If you read the original Buffettology, you know exactly half of what you need to know to effectively apply Warren Buffett's investment strategies.

Published in 1997, the bestselling Buffettology was written specifically for investors in the midst of a long bull market. Since then we've seen the internet bubble burst, the collapse of Enron, and investors scrambling to move their assets -- what remains of them -- back to the safety of traditional blue chip companies. As price peaks turned into troughs, worried investors wondered if there was any constant in today's volatile market. The answer is yes: Warren Buffett's value investing strategies make money.

The New Buffettology is the first guide to Warren Buffett's selective contrarian investment strategy for exploiting down stocks -- a strategy that has made him the nation's second-richest person. Designed to teach investors how to decipher and use financial information the way Buffett himself does, this book guides investors through opportunity-rich bear markets, walking them step-by-step through the equations and formulas Buffett uses to determine what to buy, what to sell -- and when. Authors Mary Buffett and David Clark explore Buffett's recent investments in detail, proving time and again that his strategy has earned enormous profits at a time no one expects them to -- and with almost zero risk to his capital.

In short, The New Buffettology is an essential companion to the original Buffettology, a road map to investment success in the worst of times.

4 out of 5 stars Good review, a little too much word.......2007-06-08

This is a good book, and a very easy read. However, it sometimes repeats very simple material over and over which could make the reader bored.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......2007-04-07

I am a big fan of Warren Buffet so I had read about his life and his investment style from magazines and googling. I expected to learn more from this book but was very disappointed. It's mostly information I have already learned by researching in the internet.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-27

Easy to read and gives a keen insight to how warren buffet selects his investments. Great for intermediate investors.

3 out of 5 stars Great concepts but the name..........2007-02-07

The general Buffet concepts are covered well. I take off stars because her writing style is so childish as to make you think you are in Kindergarden. Also the whole Warren this and Warren that as if he told her all this is sleasy. Either treat him as a 3rd party or get him to endorse the book personally.

5 out of 5 stars An Illuminating Peek Into The World Of Warren Buffett.......2006-12-12

This book is a "most of what you need to know about value investing but didn't know what to ask" approach to the investment philosophy of Warren Buffett. I also own the first book, but didn't review it. This one is much better.

The New Buffettology is a book of examples. I think that's what I like most about it. It has plenty of theory about the importance of a company having a durable competitive advantage, honest and able management, staying within a circle of competence, ensuring a margin of safety exists, how interest rates affect stock prices, and more. That's great, but the rubber hits the road with the numerous case studies of actual Buffett investments and how he applied the above concepts to help him decide to invest in Coca Cola, Gillette, the Washington Post, and Geico, to name a few.

Along with the case studies come the formulas. Lots and lots of formulas. Does the company have strong earnings with an upward trend? Plug 10 years worth of earnings into your spreadsheet and calculate the annual earnings growth rate. Does the company return an above average Return-On-Equity? Mary Buffett & David Clark show you how to break out those Value Line reports and plug in 10 years worth of ROE numbers into your spreadsheet to calculate the average annual return on shareholders equity for the last decade. What's the stock's value relative to a Treasury bond? You'll learn how to calculate the answer here.

The exercises go on case study after case study. I love it. Roll up your sleeves; dust off your BA-35 solar calculator and get ready to rock. If you want the skinny on value investing ala Buffett style, you had better be prepared to get your hands dirty because this is a thinking investor's book.

This book doesn't just TALK about financial analysis. It shows you how to DO it. Nothing is more boring than long windy theories with no "meat" to back them up. This book serves up the meat in Texas sized portions. Exactly where does one go for 10 years of financial information? Where do you find the current government bond rate? What's important in an annual report? Just how do you find companies that make products with a durable competitive advantage? What should you read? What should you watch? What habits should you develop? How do smart investors use "scuttlebutt" to help them form an opinion about a company? The answers may surprise you.

If value investing is what you want to do, then you have much to learn. And indeed, this book is a great place to start. It's not the only value investing book you should ever read, but is should definitely be one of the first.

Timeless Investing Strategies for Any Economy

For five decades, Warren Buffett has been making himself one of the wealthiest men in the world, amassing more than 30 billion dollars by investing in the stock market. Remarkably, he did it by spurning popular Wall Street trends, adhering instead to his own unique discipline, one the world has come to know as Buffettology. In The Buffettology Workbook, internationally acclaimed writer and lecturer Mary Buffett has again joined forces with David Clark, the world's leading authority on Warren Buffett's investment methods, to create an in-depth, step-by-step guide to the concepts and equations Warren Buffett uses to create fantastic wealth.

Here you will learn:

Download Description

In the past eighteen months, investors have seen rapid, often intimidating changes in the stock market -- tech stocks have soared and crashed and assets that shifted away from traditional blue chip companies have quickly shifted back again. In spite of this volatility however, there has been one constant: Warren Buffet's value investing strategies make money. In Buffettology, Mary Buffett and David Clark unveiled the analysis techniques that made Warren Buffett the billionaire and investment icon he is today. Now in this companion workbook, the authors explain Buffett's system of business perspective investing, focusing on specific mathematical ratios and calculations. Written in clear, easy-to-understand language, The Buffettology Workbook offers everyone with or without an Internet connection all the tools they'll need to apply the same kind of value analysis to readily available financial data that Warren Buffett does. Whether the economy they're investing in is old or new, local or global, bull or bear, no investor can afford to miss these invaluable lessons from the world's best.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Buffettology Lite.......2006-11-05

For those of you that are time-pressed, this is the best book in the Buffettology Series to read in order to glean a few secrets on the investment techniques of the Oracle of Omaha. The workbook covers both the qualitative and quantitative sides of Buffett's value investing approach, and provides the basic techniques one can implement in order to invest with a reasonable amount of success.

The workbook is not exactly the best book on investing that I have read (that title goes to Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor), but in its defense, it does provide a simple to implement investment strategy. Most of the techniques hinge on a few simple ratios and knowledge of simple present and future worth. Additionally, most of the limitations associated with the techniques are clearly and simply stated.

The book has several merits. The chief merit of the book is that its approach to investing is self-contained, and emphasizes the qualitative aspects more than the quantitative aspects. In passing, readers that focus more on Part One of the book and skip Part Two, the quantitative part, could easily obtain a dramatic improvement in their investment results. Written in simple, easy to understand language, the target audience of this book is most likely that individual who depends on the Internet for all of her information on companies, as such sites as Yahoo, MSN and Value Line are routinely cited in the text as sources of information. The book is very well organized, quite possibly with the idea that it would fit the mold of a chapter-a-day format. Most chapters are usually no more than five pages long, with easy, cheesy word problems and true/false questions at the end of most every chapter to reinforce key concepts. The title of each chapter basically states the key concept to be learned, and key points are highlighted at the end of each chapter. Although it provides some theory and rationale for the techniques it attempts to teach, this is kept to a minimum, and the book focuses almost exclusively on application of the techniques. Those readers that are only interested in the methodology can simply skip to the 22nd Chapter titled 'Doing It Yourself: Buffettology Worksheet'. Thus, the book makes every effort to make learning, and ultimately using, the techniques as painless as possible.

The major demerit of this book rests in its insistence on doing all calculations on a per-share basis. But then, this is how much of the information that is easily obtainable through such channels as Value Line and other sources is presented. One minor demerit is that the authors do not seem to be aware of the virtual ubiquity of MS Office, making it possible to perform all of the calculations in the book in one Excel spreadsheet, but then again, this is a minor demerit. Although there were a number of minor typographical and mathematical errors in the book, I am willing to overlook this, as the thinking and reasoning behind any investment proposition is more important, and is clearly presented throughout the book.

Overall, I rate the book to be worthy of reading. It presents a simple and straightforward investment approach, and does not require an advanced degree in rocket science to implement it. All it really requires is a basic understanding of fractions, decimals and percents, and most important, a willingness to think and reason through the investment proposition. However, those of you with strong quantitative backgrounds will be very dismayed with this book (as I was initially), but as I said before, if you focus exclusively on Part One of the book and Chapter 22, then you will see a dramatic improvement in your investment results going forward.

5 out of 5 stars Great book if you have read The New Buffettology.......2004-05-14

This is a good book and it is an even better book if it is used with their other book entitled The New Buffettology - which is better than the first edition entitled just Buffettology. In regard to the reader from TX Buffett uses growth of book value to determine the relative performance of Berkshire Hathaway - just check out the annual report. And Buffett is on record saying that a company is worth its future income stream discounted to present value - though Charlie Munger and I have never seen him do it. This was brought up at the 2001 Berkshire annual meeting. As far Ben Graham is concern Buffett and Munger are both on record saying that they no longer use the Graham's method - still worth the read though. Tim Vick, who wrote "Wall Street on Sale", loves the Buffettology series so much he wrote the cover recommendation. Check it out! And get on the program! You won't be sorry you did!!!

1 out of 5 stars Buffett Does NOT Follow The Techniques In This Book.......2004-03-13

This is one of the worst investing books I have ever seen. Not only does it have absolutely nothing to do with the way Warren Buffett actually invests, it completely makes up investing methods.

For instance, the book talks about discounting future streams of income. The Oracle of Omaha was quoted at a Berkshire Hathaway meeting as saying he NEVER uses discount future cash flow.

Even worse, this book promotes "book value growth" as a method for evaluating a stock's worth. Book value is an accounting term representing the net equity for a firm on ONE PARTICULAR DAY IN TIME. Change the date of the balance sheet and the value calculated by book value growth may change dramatically.

If you want to invest like Warren Buffett, check out The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for the individual investor..........2003-07-06

Written by Mary Buffett, former daughter-in-law of Warren Buffett, and David Clark, a portfolio manager, "The Buffettology Workbook" is the best investment I've ever made. The financial formulas you'll find in this book are all the ones they should teach in business school, but don't.

The book is broken down into 23 chapters, each no more than a few pages, so you can read a chapter a day (and continue to review the chapters for the rest of your investing career). The first seven chapters give a breakdown of Warren's investment philosophy, value investing. Here, you learn about the short-sightedness of the market and the bad news phenomenon. Also, the authors identify the difference between commodity-type businesses and consumer monopolies, and tell you why it's far better to own consumer monopolies. Once you understand these concepts, you're halfway toward success as an investor. Now, you need to learn how to identify the correct buying opportunity. That's where the true value of this book comes into play, offering formulas and equations you won't find most books.

The remaining chapters in the book focus on the examination of financial statements, the acquisition of pertinent information (what's important and what's not), then they tell you how determine an investment's desirability. You'll learn the value of high rates of return on shareholder equity, how to measure management's ability to utilize retained earnings, and Warren's ideas for the Internet and short-term arbitrage commitments.

I read this book beginning to end the day I got it, but I'll continue to familiarize myself with its formulas for the rest of my investing career. Although it marks only the beginning of one's investment knowledge, learning these bedrock principles are what separate successful investors from mere average ones... Buy this book!

This is great book on investing and I highly recommend it. The CD is great to listen to in the car and gets all the points across. I suggest that you also get the book. It's way better than the Graham books - which are very dated - they give you the tools to buy stocks selling at below book value - not a lot of those around any more. Besides Buffett got over Graham years ago.

1 out of 5 stars A Complete Joke.......2004-07-10

This book tries to reverse-engineer Warren Buffett's investment strategy and does a horrible job of it. Like all of Mary Buffett's books, this is long on hype and short on credibility.

For about the same price, you can buy the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, a book that Warren Buffett personally recommends reading.

5 out of 5 stars Simple is beautiful- Buffet's wisdoms on investment.......1998-08-01

A stunning simple and in-depth analysis of the working of Buffet's brain presented by Mary Buffet in her case by case detailed study on how Buffet did his investments. It' so simple that the beauty of compounding power in investment manifests its own way; the first thing is to figure out what are return on equity and annual rate of return growth rate quantitively and also qualitatively understand the prospect of underlying business- which is the one I think most difficult to learn because one can hardly match Buffet's insight and experience.

This book remind me of Peter Lynch's books- looks so simple- but much better in providing numerical approaches which I could use in daily investments.

5 out of 5 stars Want to know how Buffett picks stocks? You MUST read this!.......1998-02-10

Buffettology is an amazingly comprehensive and complete text on everything you ever wanted to know about Buffett's analytical stock-picking tools.
The book is divided into two parts. The first is a detailed overview of the qualifications that Buffett takes into account when examining a company in order to determine its merit as an investment. The second part expands on these qualifications by providing step-by-step instruction on the actual mathematical equations that Buffett uses both to determine if a company satisfies his criteria and to determine if that company's stock is selling at a reasonable price. Do not be daunted by the math; it is actually rather simple, and the author provides sufficiently concrete examples so that you can easily perform the same sequential procedure when analyzing companies on your own.
If you are at all intrigued by how the man possessing the title of "World's Greatest Investor" picks his stocks, then you MUST read this book!
