Bridging Cultural Conflicts: A New Approach for a Changing World
Michelle LeBaron Manufacturer: Jossey-Bass ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 078796431X |
Book Description
"This much needed book . . .is a creative, helpful, and hopeful contribution at a time when we are especially challenged to bridge cultures in the pursuit of mutual understanding and peace."In our global society, challenging conflicts abound in personal, business, government, and international settings. Many of these conflicts are complicated by layers of miscommunication, cultural misunderstandings, and completely different ways of looking at the world. These conflicts cannot be solved by goodwill or sincere intentions alone. In our multicultural world, we need new tools to address gaps in communication and understanding and the conflicts that flow from them.
Bridging Cultural Conflicts answers this need in groundbreaking ways that cut through complexity, replacing confusion with clarity. It introduces mindful awareness, cultural fluency, and conflict fluency as tools for decoding and moving through intercultural conflicts, and for deepening and integrating change. The book shows how fluency with culture and conflict can be learned through attention and practice, just as we would internalize a new language. As fluency is acquired, a process called dynamic engagement is presented to help prevent intercultural conflict, limit its escalation, and transform it into a learning experience.
Michelle LeBaron's approach in Bridging Cultural Conflicts is human, practical, and adaptable to a wide range of interpersonal, community, organizational, and political conflicts. Drawing from her work as an attorney, mediator, scholar, and internationally acclaimed consultant, Michelle combines the dynamism of Western approaches to conflict resolution with the insight and balance of Eastern approaches. In the process, she offers a wide array of creative strategies and usable tools. As we urgently seek better ways to work and live together and to address the issues that divide us, this timely book inspires flexibility, creativity, and hope.

Throughout the book, expert facilitator Suzanne Ghais shows how extreme facilitation - which puts on the emphasis on creativity, flexibility, and customization - can change how group members interact with one another and how participants view the issues even in the most challenging and exceptionally difficult situations. Extreme Facilitation covers the preparatory phases of the process, including assessment, convening, and contracting. Ghais also offers vital information on process design and tips for handling situations that many facilitators find particularly challenging.Customer Reviews:

ADR involves resolving disputes of any kind outside of the judicial system, through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and other processes. This book is for people who work within organizations and are involved in disputes themselves, or for people who are required to deal with or resolve disputes. It covers how to set up a dispute resolution process in an organization.

Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Workplace: Concepts and Techniques for Human Resource Executives and Their Counsel
E. Patrick McDermott , and Arthur Eliot Berkeley Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567200559 |
Book Description
With the explosion of workplace litigation and the skyrocketing costs associated with it, employers in both the private and public sectors are seeking new ways to swiftly and inexpensively resolve disputes with their employees. Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures offer ways to do this and, according to recent reports, more than 100 major corporations have made use of them. Not only are the costs of trying a workplace dispute before a jury avoided, but also due process requirements have been observed. McDermott and Berkeley introduce executives to ADR, how it's done, and its benefits. This book will be interesting and important reading for executives and for legal counsel that may be unfamiliar with ADR. The reader is first introduced to the employment litigation revolution that is sweeping the country. The authors explain the various contextual factors that have caused this rise in litigation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1993, the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Given this new legal environment, the book explores how ADR can assist an employer in avoiding or reducing the costs of employment law litigation. The subject of ADR is divided into mandatory and nonmandatory procedures. Finally, the authors discuss how an employer can introduce a binding arbitration procedure that diverts employment litigation from a jury to an arbitrator. Drafting tips and model clauses are included should an organization seek to develop a mediation procedure, arbitration procedure, or both.

Fair Division: From Cake-Cutting to Dispute Resolution
Steven J. Brams , and Alan D. Taylor Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

In a democracy, the problem of fair division of goods is fundamental. It is, for example, what's lurking behind contemporary discussions of affirmative action, divorce law, and even of Medicare and Social Security. Its flip-side problem--burden-sharing--which is implicated in such issues as taxation and the draft, is likewise central. The authors, one a political scientist, the other a mathematician, start with an analysis of the well-known cake-cutting paradigm of "I cut, you choose" and gradually soup it up into a model capable of accommodating situations in which there are more than two parties, or more than one good. They emphasize division procedures that are not only proportional (that give each of n claimants a 1/n share of the good), but that also have the psychological property of being "envy-free"; that is, producing allocations in which each participant thinks (often wrongly, obviously) that he received the largest portion.Book Description
Cutting a cake, dividing up the property in an estate, determining the borders in an international dispute--such problems of fair division are ubiquitous. Fair Division treats all these problems and many more through a rigorous analysis of the well-known cake-cutting procedure.Customer Reviews:

A comprehensive resource, easily read.......2000-07-25
For those accustomed to reading mathematics or economics, this book is readable. For the layperson, it might be a little bit too technical in spots. While it has many practical examples, it isn't really a fair division manual for the do-it-yourselfer. But it's as close as you're going to get, for now.
