5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining book. .......2007-01-18

This is a very entertaining book. Good for a coffee table type book.

5 out of 5 stars Massive NYC Info..Accessible andUnique!.......2005-12-06

Looking for very old maps of the Big City, the Mayoral and Presidential elections, Capsules of about every neighborhood in all 5 boroughs, histories of Broadway, Wall Street, MidTown, Columbia and NYU, the New School, and every other educational institution. Music from Classical to Jazz to Pop to Rock (but there is no listing for Sinatra! I think there should be.)How about the incredible skyscapers, docks, restaurants, clubs. And all this goes back to 1624, when the Dutch first settled. And sections on about every leading NYC personality ever. (though for some reason Mantle and Dimaggio are not listed separately, amoung many other famous NYC sports stars ). Even though the book is 10 years old, it is about as timeless as you can get, even with my very few small quibles mentioned!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-10-24

If there was anything you ever wanted to know about NYC but couldn't find the answer, this book will have it. What an amazing treasure trove of history, information and trivia. This book should be in every library in America.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate book about the greatest city in the world!.......2005-10-24

As a person who has visited New York several times, this is the book that has everything you need to know about the world's greatest city! The people, the neighborhoods and the interesting tidbits that make it a wonderful place! Highly recommended reading!!

5 out of 5 stars Settle all bets around the dinner table........2004-07-03

This tome, as I like to think of it, is spectacular in it's scope. It covers everything from hospitals that have long since closed, to details about the city's aqueduct water transportation system. You usually go to the book, in order to look up a specific piece of information, but spend hours perusing entries you never heard of and discovering things about America's largest city that make you gasp. If you live in New York, get this book. It holds an essential place on any New Yorker's bookshelf.

    Book Description

We are an urban nation and have been so, officially at least, since the early twentieth century. But long before then, our cities played crucial roles in the economic and political development of the nation, as magnets for immigrants from here and abroad, and as centers of culture and innovation. They still do. Yet, the discipline that we call "Urban History" is really a phenomenon of post-World War II scholarship.

Now, after a generation of pathbreaking scholarship that has reoriented and enlightened our perception of the American city, the two volumes of the Encyclopedia of American Urban History offer both a summary and an interpretation of the field. With contributions from leading academics in their fields, this authoritative resource offers an interdisciplinary approach by covering topics from economics, geography, anthropology, politics, and sociology.

    Key Features

The Encyclopedia of American Urban History is a fundamental reference work intended to ground and inspire future research in the field. It is an essential resource for any academic library.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best sports encyclopedias around!.......2007-02-15

Mark Stallard does a superb job of covering the Chiefs' history, giving colorful descriptions of a scores of players (famous and not so well known) and of the highlights of the seasons for Kansas City. Some of my favorites whom I had met, Jerry Mays and Willie Lanier, are given excellent coverage as are the players of various years through 2004. Unfortunately, this edition came out before Larry Johnson established himself as one of the league's great rushers; but an excellent synopsis of Priest Holmes is there, along with Buck Buchanan,Lenny Dawson, Joe Montana, Ernie Ladd and others. I thoroughly recommend this volume to any Chiefs' or NFL fan. The $8.12 edition is spotless and attractively and sturdily bound.

      5 out of 5 stars Great reference for any die-hard Chief's fan.......2002-12-30

I purchased this book for a quite dedicated chiefs fan and he was overwhelmed with all the facts, details, and history that is contained within this book. It is easy to find the fact that you are looking for because the book is well organized. There are many photos (B&W) throughout the book with a special color section in the middle. A great addition to any KC Chiefs fan's library.

People complain that Los Angeles is chaos, a massive tangle of freeways and boulevards, gangs, and movie stars. Leonard and Dale Pitt bring organization to the confusion with an encyclopedia that runs from Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem to Zuma County Beach, covering the people, places, events, and icons that make up the city and county of Los Angeles. The famous neighborhoods of Hollywood and Watts are there, as are the lesser-known Winnetka and El Sereno. There are entries on when and where the smog began, how the movie industry was established, which trees are native, and just who the Black Dahlia was. With appendices covering chronology, the 1990 census, and government organizations, Los Angeles A to Z is an exceptionally well-done resource, and a welcome addition to the shelves of any Los Angelaphile, scholar, or visitor who seeks a self-guided tour.

      Book Description

Few cities captivate the imagination as does Los Angeles. It is the locus of spectaculars: movies, earthquakes, freeways, riots, sunsets. In this fascinating desk reference, Leonard and Dale Pitt have gathered a sweeping array of information on the City of Angels. Bolstering their historical and humanistic approach with scientific and technical information, the Pitts include alphabetically arranged entries on history, geography, automobile culture, sports, movies, current events, architecture, flora, fauna, scandals, biography, the arts, politics, neighborhoods, and ethnic, racial, and religious groups. Quotations throughout provide provocative and amusing tidbits about the city that has been called "the fulfillment of the American Dream." Copiously illustrated and wonderfully anecdotal, this is a book for anyone with a question, large or small, about Los Angeles.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Interesting As It Should Be.......2007-03-21

This encyclopedia does cover a wide array of topics regarding Los Angeles and it's history, but the writing is not that interesting. And the articles are just too brief to provide more than a very basic understanding (which, I suppose, is what an encyclopedia is all about). As a newcomer to LA, it has answered some questions about things like the origination of certain street names and the history of specific areas of town, but I really would like something with more meat to it.

4 out of 5 stars This Book is Full of Interesting LA Facts.......2007-03-20

I really enjoyed thumbing through this Encyclopedia. Los Angeles' brief is history is fascinating and often neglected.

This book is quite comprehensive, and gives you the back story on many different topics related to LA. It answered a lot of my questions such as: "Where did the name Beverly Hills come from?" (Answer: the first farmer on the land was from Beverly Farms, Massachusetts); "Didn't LA use to have a light rail system?" (Answer is a big yes!) and a lot more.

If you want to learn more about LA, this book is a great resource for you.

5 out of 5 stars Chock Full of Anything You Want to Know about L.A........2001-03-12

If you can think of anything you'd ever want to know about Los Angeles, chances are you will find it in this book, and in DETAIL. I was hard-pressed to find anything missing that I knew about as an Angeleno. Historical entries include L.A. water czar William Mulholland, the Chandler families, the histories of movie theaters and many, many more pieces of information. A great book for those fascinated with L.A. history.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK ON LA!.......2000-07-06

This is without a doubt the best book ever written about L.A.! It is amazingly comprehensive and virtually teams with fascinating stories on every page. Great for reading in bed before sleep. For every Angeleno, especially those unlucky ones who are far from home, this is a welcome companion. You will love it!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......1999-07-24

My wife bought a copy of this book for me as a birthday present, and I love it! This is an excellent resource for understanding the details, history and current state of Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County. I hope the authors will consider producing a companion volume to this work, perhaps called "Orange County A-Z".

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book But Not So Practical.......2005-03-31

This guide has beautiful color pictures and lots of information. Over 100 pages is just information about Japan. The guide part of the book is split into districts and talks about the different sights to see. The pictures and this organization is nice for planning a trip to Japan, or reading up on the history of Japan, however it's not as practical as a companion book to carry with you.

First of all, it's heavy. You wouldn't want to carry a 1.5-pound book around. It doesn't have as many maps as some of the other guides do and the organization can be a little confusing if you want to look up info on just one place. The major problem with this guide is its complete lack of Japanese characters. It doesn't write hotel names, restaurant names, or anything in Japanese characters for you. If you want a book to carry around on your travels I would recommend Lonely Planet Tokyo instead.

      4 out of 5 stars Tokyo.......2003-11-20

This book is great for planning a trip to Tokyo. It shows all the attractions that are of interest and is a great companion for finding places to dine, stay, and shop. This guide has it all with high-quality photogrpahs and maps on every page. This is a must of a beginner traveller to Tokyo or anywhere in Japan.

      Book Description

She needs no introduction. For decades, she's been the world's leading icon of democracy. Four million people visit her each year. She is the very symbol of America. But how well do we really know the Statue of Liberty? Did you know, for instance, that her origin dates back to Roman antiquity? Or that New York narrowly beat out Philadelphia for the right to house her? Or that her nose is three feet, eight inches long?

In time to celebrate Lady Liberty at the millennium, this gorgeous encyclopedia is sure to satisfy the countless requests historian Barry Moreno has received to deliver the first full-scale reference ever written on the Statue of Liberty. As its name implies, The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia promises to answer every possible question about our famous monument. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about the statue's history, the book also presents a vast collection of illustrations -- many never before published -- ranging from the amusing to the poignant to the pa-triotic. Stops on this visual tour include Betty Grable making a visit to the statue, antique autogyros flying overhead, and a gravity-defying glimpse of Liberty's spiraling inner armature.

The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia is not just the history of one monument but the story of our nation and its far-reaching cultural and ideological roots. Elegant and eloquent, the book will stand as an emotional, educational, and entertaining testament to the statue's enduring significance.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Liberty Book since 1986!.......2000-10-09

Finally, a book worth having! There were a lot of books published between 1984 and 1986 for the statue's centennial and only a few were worth having. This newly published book is a must have for the Statue of Liberty collector, historian, or proud American.

"The Statue of Encyclopedia, serves as the first ever top-to-bottom reference on one of the most beloved national monuments. Barry Moreno, the premier expert and historian of the Statue of Liberty, leads readers on a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated A-to-Z tour. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about her history, the book also includes a vast collection of photographs - many never before published."

5 out of 5 stars Every American should own this........2000-09-23

Whether you're political, or artistic, every American should own this book. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? An intangible concept that is broken down into encyclopedia form for scholars and us regular folks to digest. There are dozens of books about the Statue, but I found this one is by far the most comprehensive and the pictures are of outstanding quality. Highly recommended.

        4 out of 5 stars Nail Technician.......2006-11-04

This book offers a great deal of information. However. It was written in England and that is the main focus of the information in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow... loaded with information!.......2006-01-30

Great book with up-to-date information. Book goes into some detail about starting a nail business as well. I was impressed with the quality and the extensive information, techniques, tech tips and excellent pictures. The heavy, glossy pages mean durability when returning back to the book for reference. I would highly recommend this book to any nail tech or nail tech student. It's a book well worth the cost and a priceless addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for beginners.......2004-10-06

I bought this book halfway through doing a nail technician course and I found it fantastic. Great tips and hints, gives good advice and explains everything clearly.
My favourite parts were the trouble-shooting pages with explanations for common problems and how to solve them. There are also good sections on learning to be a trainer, nail art and entering competitions.
If you are a complete beginner like me then this book is perfect.

        Book Description

The Street Book contains brief biographical sketches for more than one hundred of Manhattan's well- and lesser-known streets. With photographs, period drawings, and reproductions of old newspapers, The Street Book is a visual treat as well. The detailed topographical maps of Manhattan provide an easy reference for locating streets, and even make it possible to use The Street Book as a walking guide.

        4 out of 5 stars A great primer to Manhattan's street names.......2004-07-02

When people think of the street names of Manhattan, they probably think of the grid and its numbered roads. WRONG! Manhattan, especially the older neighborhoods from Houston Street south to the Battery, are filled with twisting little streets whose names resonate with Manhattan's history. This is where you'll find out why Houston Street is pronounced "HOW-ston". Where did Maiden Lane get its name from? Who was Barclay? This book will tell all. My only complaint (which prevented from giving this five stars) was with the binding: it cracked almost immediately upon opening and, right now, several pages are precariously clinging to the spine. Maybe it was only the batch that mine came out of which is so weak.

Still this is a very informative book. If only it can tell me why New Yorkers pronounce Avenue of the Americas as "Sixth Avenue".
