5 out of 5 stars The recipient loved it.......2004-10-22

I bought this as a gift for a friend who helped a great deal with my wedding, advising me of dress styles, hair styles, fashion from this era, dances, music, food, and everything in between, as well as arranging all the flowers for the wedding! She was a godsend! When I gave her the book, her jaw dropped and she was so excited to get it... she said she had been wanting it forever. As I consider her quite knowledgeable about the subject matter of this book, and as it came highly recommended by her, I would say that it's a great book to have if this is something you are interested in as a serious hobby or more.

5 out of 5 stars The best place to start for Elizabethan Costuming.......2003-04-10

This is one of the best books ever written on the subject of Elizabethan Costuming. It mainly contains all of the details of Queen Elizabeth I wardrobe but it has unique points in the society that surrounded the dresses. This book helps to explain the Gloriana image that became so popular and it helps us to understand all the little details that went into the dress of the period. Detailing costumes using portraits and explaining how the fashion progressed makes this book a must for anyone interested in Renaissance Faires and the nobility. The only drawback is that very very few of the portraits and pictures are in color. I think a total of about 7 are in color the rest is in black and white. The only way to make this book more appealing and usable would be to put all of the portraits and pictures in color, but that would make the book even more expensive. After this must have book the 2nd on the shelf should be a J. Hunniset book (the lady who did all the costuming for Elizabeth R and The Six Wives of Henry the VIII produced by BBC). Next, any Janet Arnold book. Last, would be the Norris book: Tudor Costuming and Fashion (although most of this book is very outdated it is nice to look at). All of these are must haves and will make a well rounded library. Dispite the high price of the book it is worth posessing. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Such An Amazing Resource!.......2002-02-12

For the historical costumer focused on 16th century clothing, this is the "bible" hands down. Big, expensive, and filled with the usual detail that is the hallmark of Janet Arnold, this is one very worthwhile investment for the serious costumer. This book has one tiny drawback, in that it focuses entirely on women's fashion in the 16th century as viewed through the wardrobe accounts of Queen Elizabeth I and some of her contemporaries. Therefore, it has nothing to say on the topic of men's clothing, which is an unfortunately neglected aspect of 16th century research.

Much of Janet Arnold's most important contributions to the costuming community are addressed in this book, making it extremely valuable. She presents each section with satisfying detail, raising very few questions that remain unanswered. The photographs accompanying the text are also invaluable, as many of them are not available in other books or to the general public for viewing. If only there were more color images...

If you can afford the book, you won't regret buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Really great book but....there are a few issues.......2001-08-06

For years I heard how this was _the_ book to buy if you were into Elizabethan costuming and wanted authentic items that could be documented. The book is good for that, and I enjoyed the style that Ms.Arnold wrote it in.

But I have two major gripes with the book-both regarding the quality of graphics and images in it.

First off-in the whole book there are only about 5 pages in color. The rest of it-including hundreds of portraits, examples of extant clothing pieces and pieces of embroidery were all in black and white. I complain about that because, with so many of the portraits quoted as examples it would help if they could be seen clearly. (Many of them are too dark to have reproduced well, and a few are quite horrible.) And the photographs....

If they could reprint this book and possibly include more color plates it would be a much much more valuable resource. As it stands now, it is a good source, but not all that I could have hoped for. Instead I have begun a search for color reproductions of the portraits cited in the book. A long tedious job but one that I think over all will make it a much more solid resource for my needs.

5 out of 5 stars The Best source for the Wardrobe of Elizabeth 1st.......2000-05-13

This book is amazing. Huge, and packed full of information. An essential refernce work if you are seriously considering doing anything with elizabethan fashion. The author has poured years of scholarship into this work and it shows. It's not really a coffee table picture book. Instead it is full of carefully culled facts for the serious student or anybody curious about 'real' English Tudor costume.

I ordered this book for self study, not for any class. There are no answers; they're all in the instructor's manual, which you cannot purchase if you're not an instructor. Calls to the publisher were met with indifference. The book itself is great, but if I already knew the answers I wouldn't have needed the book!

There can be few people who do not have a box or album full of fading photographs of half- forgotten ancestors somwhere in their home. These photographs can be a treasure trove of information for family historians. Apart from showing your ancestors looks, photographs can reveal much more about them, including their social class, profession and origin. This book is designed to help you research, date and contextualise these family photographs. The book traces developments up to 1945, starting with the invention of popular photography in the mid-nineteenth century and continuing with the Box Brownie which made photography accessible to a wider public. It shows how to date photographs to a surprisingly accurate degree and how to interpret public and official photgraphs, as well as private ones. It includes sections on how to best present and preserve your photographs and features illustrated case studies with a fascinating selection of examples that help to explain the techniques involved.

If you want to take a closer look at old photos handed down through generations, you also have to take a closer look at the history and nature of portrait photography itself - and there's no better resource to turn to than Family Photographs 1860-1945. Other books focus on the history of portraits with an eye to photographic insights or artistic analysis: this instead blends in important facts unique to genealogical research, such as changing family roles, changing fashions, and how to date and interpret images given little extra information. These aspects make FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS 1860-1945 an invaluable genealogist's tool.

      Book Description

Britain's 1000-year prominence on the international stage endures. Posterity owes the English language (spoken now by more than half the world's population) a tradition of democratic freedom, governmental and legal systems which have been adapted in many countries, and world figures in science, literature, and the arts. The "British Inheritance" is shared not just by the peoples of the UK but also by those of many lands--the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and India--which were once its colonies and are now its allies and partners.
Britain's rich historical heritage is evident in the great archive and manuscript collections found in such institutions as the Public Record Office, British Library, National Library of Scotland, Scottish Record Office, and National Library of Wales. From King Arthur, Alfred the Great, and William the Conqueror to the end of the Empire, swinging England of the 1960s, and the multicultural Britain of the '90s, this volume displays, in chronological order, key documents which illuminate defining moments in British history. The documents are accompanied by lively commentaries by experts and curators, placing the material in context and explaining its significance. Alongside such major treasures as the Domesday Book and Magna Carta are many less-well-known but nonetheless fascinating items such as Oscar Wilde's calling card and the last letter of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Superbly illustrated in color throughout, with a brief introduction, this authoritative and accessible book will appeal to anyone with an interest in history, politics, and culture.

      5 out of 5 stars A lovely time-sink . . ........2005-07-22

I've been a working (though non-teaching) historian for more than three decades, and while I'm familiar with historiographical theories, and cliometrics, and other purely intellectual pursuits, I still confess a preference for "tangible," material history. Maybe it's my training as an archivist, but I get a serious thrill from seeing, perhaps even handling, an original document. If you mentioned "historic documents" to most people, they would think of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives. My interests run somewhat earlier, however: I'd think first of Domesday Book, nearly five times as old as the Declaration, and arguably of far more pervasive influence on the U.S. Hallam is on the staff of the Public Record Office, where the Book is housed, so that's her first choice, too, together with Nennius's "History of the Britons," the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and (of course) Magna Carta. But this gorgeously illustrated oversized volume goes on to portray a large number of original charters, treaties, and letters. Examples of William Caxton's printing are here, and a Shakespeare First Folio, and a list of the burgesses of the Virginia Company, and the Declaration of Rights with which Parliament hedged their offer of the throne to William and Mary. Then, in the modern period, you'll find correspondence of Prince Charles Stewart (the Young Pretender), and Clive writing home with news of his victories in India, and maps of the enclosures that accompanied the Agricultural Revolution, and Radical political pamphlets from the 1830s, and the manuscript of _Pickwick Papers,_ right up to beer advertisements from the 1890s (deposited at the PRO to register copyright), police reports of the arrest of suffragettes, Edward VIII's Instrument of Abdication, and Paul McCartney's handwritten lyrics to "Yesterday." The accompanying text is excellent and I've spent many pleasant hours perusing the illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book For British History Buffs to Own.......2000-05-11

This is a typically fascinating book by someone who is truly an expert on British history, Elizabeth Hallam. Ms. Hallam has served as editor for a variety of books concentrating on the ancient and medieval historic periods of England's past - such as The Plantagenant Chronicles - and all her works wonderfuly combine text and beautiful color pictures, maps and large photos to bring us back to the era they are describing. Ms. Hallam's latest work, The British Inheritence, continues this pattern. It concentrates on nearly 100 of the most important documents in British history - the Domesday Book, Magna Carta, etc. - and does so with lucid and descriptive text, which outlines the documents, their history and significance, and best of all, terrific photos of each of the the documents described. And unlike in some other books, the photos of the documents outlined are not small, postage-stamp sized illustrations, but instead are shown, generally in full color, and large enough for the reader to actually be able to make out the words and signatures themselves! Again, to anyone who is at all interested in the history of England, in its famous events, its colorful characters, its kings and its queens, this cofee table book is a wonderful edition to own, and to place in one's library as not only an important book on history in its own right, but also as a work that is that is just plain fun to look at and savor!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference .......2006-11-07

Susan Lumas' MAKING USE OF THE CENSUS has been revised to include the 1901 census and appears in its fourth updated edition to cover how the census was taken and preserved, where to locate its components, and how to locate supporting indexes of information. An excellent reference that will aid researchers in locating ancestors' lost documents and historical facts by making uses of publicly recorded documents and the census.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little introduction to the Victorian censuses........2000-07-22

This introductory book is primary focused on the use of the census microfilm available for England and Wales at the Public Records Office in the United Kingdom.

However, the information provide is of great use to the researcher with English or Welsh ancestry for understanding how the censuses were taken, how they are currently organized, and how best to access them.

The section on "Finding Your Place on the Film" describes the PRO's microfilm numbering system which is useful even when you use the films at the LDS Family History Centers since they are copies of the PRO films. Understanding the PRO reference numbers makes research a great deal easier.

The section on "Understanding the Returns" contains many wonderful gems from the original enumerators' notes. Be prepared to laugh at their inventiveness in describing some occupations and the reasons why they were unable to count everyone in their area. Humorous and insightful examples are used to illustrate the book throughout.

One set of illustrations which I found particularly helpful were the sample street maps showing how an enumerator might "walk" the street - thus explaining the order in which households were recorded in the census returns.

The appendixes include a complete list of registration districts and their numbers for each census and various street index finding aids (invaluable for hunting ancestors in the larger cities).
