5 out of 5 stars this is a book that every parent should own, a baby shower gift.......2007-05-28

How I wish I had had this book when my 28 year old daughter was born. We no longer have a relationship even tho we love each other but we are 16 (the farthest) personalities apart. I am an extreme extovert ESTJ and she is and extreme introvert (infp)just about the worst combo for mom and child. because she held it all in. She didn't have a chance to speak nor did she like conflict so it wasn't until she found a safe rock to jump to when she got engaged at 25, and she jumped all the way off my rock and never intends to return. I can't blame her looking back, but it wasn't my fault either, my biological family was definitely not introverted and I didn't know they would hold it all in. I am so sorry for what pain I caused her and never knew it, I was a great great mom,and elem teacher, but never knew my own daughter probably highly disliked me. Not until way too late, if only I had known. My heart is broken as I now have a grand daughter I will never get to be a grandmother to, and you may not understand this, but I am very extoverted and it is almost impossible for her to be around me even when I tone down 90% because of the experiences she probaby endured ages 0-5. So I'm sharing with you so you don't suffer the horrid pain I have suffered but have come to accept over the last 3 years since she married.I want only for her to be happy and I think that means she gets to be free of me :)

5 out of 5 stars The Fastest Way To Understand How To Be A More Effective Parent or Teacher.......2007-04-16

I work with students in an alternative K - 12 public school. We have found that it is always necessary to improve the understanding and communication between parent and child if academic and behavioral performance is to be improved.

This book is extremely valuable in helping an adult understand the child and the child to understand him/her self.

The book makes it easy for the adult to determine the adult's and children's styles that are interacting. It then goes on, for each style of child, to provide a brief overview, and then sections dealing with preschool, school-aged, and adolescent child. Within many of these age sections the authors have a sub-section that talks about "the joys and challenges of raising the child," and concludes each type with a page that recaps what works with that particular type of child.

I read the appropriate section to a mother and student and both agreed that it was a perfect description of how the child functioned and how the parent needed to deal with the child.

The advice given in the book on how my meetings with the student could be structured to maximize the achievement of goals I had set for the meeting produced results.

I strongly recommend this book to teachers and parents that wish to make a difficult objective easier to reach.

I also suggest you review the author's other books.

I use Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type to narrow down the types of jobs a student may be interested in before administering a career interest survey.

I use Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type to improve my understanding of how a person of my type can best interact with the type of person I am dealing with in a particular meeting or teaching / mentoring situation.

Why? Because I give them away and wear them out with people I care about. It is that practical. OK, I admit to being a certified instructor in the Myers Briggs and a licensed children's counselor now working as a leadership development consultant, but TRULY the insights of Type have helped me to be a better parent (my most important role)to my beloved children. Try it. Take a MBTI assessment for yourself and learn about what each aspect of your own Type means. Follow thorugh with helping you child learn about their type. You will see the bridges to cross together that lead both of you into a richer, more productive relationship with greater joy.

I bought this book before I had children because I was trying to understand my own personality a little better. Now I am trying to type my 2-year-old son-at least I am having a great time trying, even though I suspect I won't have any final answers until he is able to express himself a little more. Even at this age though, it helps me to identify different traits and not worry about the differences between him and other children in his environment. I think my son is an ESTJ and I am an INTP-so this book has helped to remind me that my son's way of relating to the world is different from mine, and that I need to consider his actions and needs in his context. Also, I like the fact that different learning styles, activity levels, and verbal abilities are discussed as well as the standard introversion vs. extroversion Myers-Briggs typing.

5 out of 5 stars One Important Tool for the Parental Toolbox.......2003-05-01

It is hard to underestimate the value of understanding personality type for developing effective business, spouse, peer, and parent-child relationships. I would speculate that many family conflicts are due to different personality types not being able to communicate with one another, or a child not fitting the behavior model established by the parents or siblings. Still, this is only one tool in the parental toolbox. Personality type should not be the only tool used, it doesn't mean that the tools of common sense and tradition are totally thrown out the window, yet it is a very useful tool and one that many parents are not aware of.

If you are not familiar with personality type, this book serves as a great introduction to understanding both your own and your child's, and may well be the first of a number of books you explore in this area of psychology. If you already have some knowledge about personality type (such as having read 'Please Understand Me II' by David Keirsey), it is still worth picking up a copy of this book. You will find the specific examples and descriptions of how personality type manifests itself in children at different ages to be helpful and insightful.

Book Description

If Gilda Radner, one of the original cast of Saturday Night Live, had known of her family's medical pedigree and her ethnic heritage, she possibly could have prevented her death from ovarian cancer, the silent killer that tragically took her life at the age of 42. Cancer, mental illness, diabetes, and heart disease all have a hereditary component. Unlocking Your Genetic History explains how to integrate a family health history into your genealogy, how to get the appropriate medical information and analyze it, and how to design a medical pedigree in order to detect the genetic influence on your family's health. Early awareness, identification, and treatment can mean the difference between life and death.

The second part of the book discusses the exciting new field of using genetic testing to link you to your ancestors and verify your genealogy. Genetic testing was used to show that Thomas Jefferson fathered children with his slave Sally Hemings and has direct male descendents living today.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best book (so far) on a difficult subject.......2005-06-20

This is the fifth in a new series of instructional volumes sponsored by the National Genealogical Society, and when I read and reviewed the first four in September 2004, I was very impressed. The authors all were well known and trustworthy and their treatment of old subjects (such as basic research principles) and not so old (setting up a genealogy web site) was generally quite well done. But this one is somewhat different. The subject of "genetic genealogy" is still very much unknown territory to almost all genealogists, even the professionals. It's not even a "social science," so one has to acquire a certain amount of new background knowledge even before delving into it. This author is also less likely to be known to most genealogists outside his own specialty: He's a medical doctor, a Section Chief at the National Institutes of Health -- although he has also been president of the Prince George's County Genealogical Society and chairs the NGS committee on Family Health and Heredity, so he certainly can't be called a beginner. Personally, I've been "doing genealogy" for more than three decades, but my background is in history, library science, and archival management, with no training and very little experience in the life sciences. Over the past few years, I've read dozens of articles in all sorts of journals on the subject of applying recent breakthroughs in DNA mapping to family lineages, but even though I've been intrigued by the possibilities, the result has generally been to confuse myself even further. I'm pleased to say that Shawker has supplied an antidote to my ignorance.
The first section lays out the reasons you need to know about your family's health history, because "ignorance is not bliss." This is especially true among Acadian families, as in other geographically or culturally isolated populations (Ashkenazic Jews, Amish, Afrikaners, Pacific Islanders) which suffer from a predisposition to assorted diseases and conditions. He follows this with a primer on the nature and process of genetics that is very well written and easy to understand (even for me), with a full explanation of dominant and recessive traits. He includes plenty of case studies, too, from King George III and the Romanovs to Gilda Radner. Then comes a section on compiling a health history, drawing up a medical pedigree, interpreting the results, and being aware of the warning signs for various important and common genetic diseases.
The part of the book I read most closely is that which explains in great detail, with many examples and illustrations, how the Y-chromosome is passed on, unchanged, from father to son to grandson, and so on, through the male line, and how the mitochondrial DNA is likewise passed without change from mother to daughter to granddaughter. The famous Thomas Jefferson-Sally Hemmings case provides a good example of how all this works, and how one can use deduction to track lineages that are a mix of males and females. Numerous charts and diagrams also increase one's understanding. Shawker also lays out a strategy for developing a family association DNA project to determine the relationships between groups with identical surnames, and he repeatedly makes the point that no testing program can prove anything: It can only serve as another research tool in conjunction with more traditional genealogical methods.
Finally, the author addresses the ethical and legal issues inherent in genetic testing, whether for family research or to identify an inherited tendency to contract a disease, and includes a lengthy guide to other resources on the Internet - especially important in a fast-developing area like this. There's an excellent bibliography, too. Shawker is that rare scientist who can write coherently for the layman and I can recommend this excellent work to any individual or library with an interest in genealogical methodology.

Great Book! Where each city is broken down and reviewed I would like to see a map of the city/state and surrounding area to see exactly where the city is located and what it is close to...

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it........2007-01-03

Somehow I live in one of these places and I know several others very well. I trying to move from one of the best places to raise my family. This book just didn't have the information needed to make a sound decision.

5 out of 5 stars Great for those seeking new places to live.......2006-11-08

This book is perfect for people interested in moving to better places to raise families. It is well organized and represents choices throughout the country. The one complaint I would offer is that many of the best places chosen are on the expensive side, but that is probably unavoidable, as people pay more to live in nice places. There are many inexpensive options described, as well. This book has been hugely inspiring for my family and we don't regret the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Great Relocation Resource.......2006-07-27

As just one component of your relocation research this is a great tool. While it is hard to question the underlying research presented in the book you have to look for nuances in the recommendations the authors make to gain a better understanding of a particular area. These carefully worded nuances are a critical part of gaining a true picture of the "Best Place" being rated.

Having lived in a few of the cities rated as "Best Places" the subtle comments reveal a much more accurate picture of the area than the statistical data.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK........2006-07-27

There is a lot of information here. We especially liked the 100 `family' places around the country, but isn't that what any suburb is anyway? Still, the selections are interesting.

There are just a few maps in the book and they are quite cheesy. Plus, a lot of the figures they use are recycled from the Census of six years ago. Any good web surfer can dig that stuff up.

I don't know about you, but I could have used less information on Starbucks outlets and `picture postcard' settings and a lot more on the schools. Isn't that why families move?

This book is an OK start. But there must be a better book out there on how a family in North Carolina can find a good school system in suburban Phoenix.

Book Description

The antidote to perfection mothering-an innovative and proactive guide to identifying and parenting from your strengths

An antidote to our stressed-out mother culture, MotherStyles validates the notion that good mothering comes in many styles and explains how understanding how you most often react to your child and why is the most important step toward working through areas that have long given you trouble.

Drawing on the personality type-theory popularized by the Myers-Briggs(r) Type Indicator and author Janet Penley's more than eighteen years of working with mothers, MotherStyles explains the combinations of traits that make up sixteen distinct mothering approaches. From the "Tuned-In Mother," the "Heart-to-Heart Mother," and the "Kids 'r' Fun Mother" to the "Responsibility Mother" and the "Independence Mother," Penley helps readers identify which style reflects her own strengths, struggles, and needs and, from there, offers unique and concrete ideas for ways to overcome the parenting challenges inherent to each type. Guiding mothers to an understanding of how type affects parent-child interactions and family dynamics, MotherStyles will help moms everywhere to recharge their batteries, and find success in this most important of roles.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2006-12-08

This book was very helpful to me in understanding WHY I do things the way I do (for example, how I relate to my children). It also helped me to understand why my mom did/does things.

I was able to make a guess a my children's personality types (there is info in the book in how to do that) and found out that my daughter and I only share 1 letter out of 4 - no wonder I have a hard time understanding her! Taking our personality styles into account, I am better able to provide her with the emotional and physical attention that she wants and needs. I also try to focus on the strength we have in common and have been able to bond more easily.

I have loaned this book out three times already and have another person waiting - but I want to read it again first. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Every mother should have this book!.......2006-10-11

Ever since before I conceived my daughter, I have devoured parenting books by the score. Only a few have passed the "purchase test." (I borrow everything I read from the library, then decide whether I'll reread it enough times to want to own it.) Motherstyles is different from anything else I've come across. After reading ONE PAGE I purchased it on the spot. A few more pages and I was already laughing and crying, feeling deeply affirmed as a mother and energized by the powerful truths this book contains. Since first reading it cover-to-cover in a couple of days, I have referred to it several times a week for my own parenting and to share its insights with friends.

Ms. Penley has used her deep understanding of personality type to show every mother why she shines in certain areas and struggles in others. Motherstyles solves an amazing number of mysteries about why different mothers, kids, and people in general operate differently, as well as shedding light on family dynamics. The book "justified" for me certain strong needs I have as a mother--such as why I need daily solitude for my very sanity, while for many of my mother friends, a little time alone is simply a luxury that they can postpone if need be. So I'm meeting my needs more consistently--without guilt. I have stopped comparing myself to other mothers, instead embracing my personal style as a gift to my child. And everyone in my family is happier!

Mothers in our society are in an strange bind: At our fingertips is an unprecedented amount of theoretical knowledge about all that children need in order to thrive. Yet on the practical level, ONE person, with her very human strengths and limitations, is expected to provide it all . . . while socially isolated, sleep-deprived, and overwhelmed by the rest of life's demands. It would be funny if it weren't so serious. This book goes farther than any other to lighten the load of that impossible burden, empowering mothers to claim their own uniqueness as a vital part of their children's thriving.

Motherstyles has changed my world. Since reading it, I've been imagining a world in which every mother had a copy of it. It would be a world in which every mother was doing her very best parenting, her unique kind of parenting--while having fun and feeling plenty of ease and joy! A world in which every mother approached her children, her partner, other mothers, and herself with warm and deep understanding. A world in which every mother felt free to be fully herself. And THAT would give children what they truly need. I urge mothers, their partners, educators, and everyone who works with mothers to buy Motherstyles and help change the world!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Moms who "don't fit" the mold.......2006-10-01

If you are the mom who always has kleenex, a snack and a spare to share, fresh water bottles, a first aid kit, combs and hair accessories in your purse and glove box, if you bathe your children from 8 to 8:15 every night and you live by your calendar (which you never lose), you can still benefit from this book, which will help you understand your child who regularly forgets her coat at school and likes her room messy.

If you are the mom who looks at the clock at 6pm and says,"Oh crap, what am I going to make for dinner!", whose dining room table is too full of fun projects to actually allow you to serve dinner there, and whose kid gets a bath when they start to smell funny, this book is for you!

If you have tons of friends and your kid has few, or you like quiet time and your child needs to constantly be on the go, if you need lots of hugs but your child isn't interested, if your child color codes her sock drawer and you can't _find_ your sock drawer....this book is so for you.

You might not BE like most other moms, and you might still be doing a fantastic job as a mom! This book tells you how to leverage the strengths inherent in your mothering style...and there are strengths in _all_ of the styles, even the rare types.

Or your kids might not BE like other kids....here's some great insight into their styles and how to work with them...not change them.

The book has lots of practical ideas to bring harmony and joy to the family, but even if it didn't, it would be interesting all on its own.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great solution for Perfectly Imperfect Mothers everywhere!.......2006-09-14

While, no personality test can explain everything about you, the information that you can learn about YOURSELF from this book is simply incredible. I have found it invaluable in my own life. Not only did it help me recognize my parenting strengths and weaknesses, but also it helped me to stop comparing myself to other mothers around me. They've got their strengths and weaknesses - and I've got mine.
Understanding your strengths helps you develop confidence as a mother. But more importantly, as a Life Coach I have learned that you MUST clearly identify your needs and weaknesses BEFORE you can hope to work on them! That's why this book is so useful.
I highly recommend this book to help you understand yourself better & become the best mom you can be!

5 out of 5 stars Very Insiteful!.......2006-08-13

Motherstyles really helps mothers understand themselves, their own mothers, their friends, their husbands, even their kids. It helps mothers appreciate who they are as individuals, and who those around them are as individuals. It helps mothers to appreciate everyones differences. Every mother should read this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely relationship handbook.......2000-02-25

16 Ways to Love Your Lover is an excellent relationship handbook. Its an easy introduction to the 16 temperaments and would be especially beneficial for those who's significant others are of a different temperament to themselves. Even though it is aimed at couples the principles of understanding/relating to others is very helpful. It gives practical everyday life advice, from communication to sex and money matters. The book gives short examples of couples which helps you to see the different temperaments in action and there are excellent graphs that can help you solve/understand differences or trouble spots between you both. Apart from all this, I also found it helpful in specifying my own needs and wants in a relationship. If you want to improve your relationships, or understand yourself better, its definitely worth a read.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not educational.......1999-08-15

While this book is generally on with its observations of general human behavior, it should in the relationship section, not psychology. Its pop-psych style of unsubstantiated examples doesn't provide much valuable information for you to learn from. It's an entertaining read, but when all is said and done, it's difficult for a reader with any knowledge of the MBTI to feel like they've learned anything worthwhile. If you want a book about relationship quirks, this is the one. Otherwise, look for something else.

5 out of 5 stars Even after 33 years of marriage, we're laughing and learning.......1999-06-30

Even though I've read a great many books on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, this is the book my wife and I share as we learn more about each other and ourselves. We've given it as gifts to friends and business colleagues who describe problems and troubles with their relationships. They read 16 Ways and report that "Now I understand why ..." and that "we're talking about why and how we are the way we are and how each of us has to relate."

As my wife said, "you're so normal, and I thought you were just being difficult!"

If you've never heard or read of the MBTI or Psychological Type, or if you are an expert, this book has much to offer. Highly recommended to couples who are wondering how love can grow when lust subsides.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books on Type........1998-12-30

If you've read Kroeger and Thusen's other books, like "Type Talk At Work" or "Type Talk", you'll recognize most of that material in this book. "16 Ways To Lover Your Lover" doesn't add much to the two works mentioned above, and if you are well read on the MBTI this book won't add much to what you already know. However, if Type is new to you, and you're looking for some fun ways to explore your relationship with a significant other, this book is worth a shot.

2 out of 5 stars outdated.......2006-03-18

This would be an excellent and thorough book were it not nine years old. The information on cost of living is useless because so much has changed.

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2004-11-28

The book is put together very well and is easy to read. Now for the negatives. Most of the information is old which makes it unusable. It's OK for a starting point, but you'll be going back to the internet for up-to-date information.

5 out of 5 stars 50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family by Giovagnoli.......2004-08-29

This book describes optimal places to live and retire. The author
describes the quality of life, local economy/jobs , entertainment and a plethora of other concerns. Fountain Hills, Arizona is listed for its jobs, no state income tax and quality of lifestyle. Gainesville Florida is listed as the most livable
city in the USA. Huntington, NY is listed as a preferred
suburb with good schools, beaches and vacation spots.
Charlottesville, VA. is praised for its scenary, affordable
housing, schools and educational centers. This book is a solid
value if you are researching an area unfamiliar to you.
Before you move anywhere, visit the locality, speak to residents and make up your own mind independent of what any book conveys.

1 out of 5 stars Published in 1997 - Too Old & Dated!.......2003-10-25

I was excited to receive this book, but hadn't noticed in the product description that it was last published in 1997, and since it's nearly 2004, this book was not very helpful. The data is time sensitive (cost of living, populations, tax rates, home costs, school info, etc). Each city review had a nice "contact" list at the end, but one major thing missing were website addresses (which would've helped locate more recent data). Only the addresses & phone numbers were listed, and most were not toll-free numbers. Shame on me for not noticing the publication date, shame on Amazon.com for recommending it as a match with "The Places Rated Almanac" (the book found me, I wasn't looking for it specifically).

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and way too subjective.......2003-10-11

We visited 10 of the communities listed, and are quite familiar with seven more of them. First, the authors seem to have a preference for non-pedestrian-friendly, car-oriented suburban sprawl. Second, I don't know where they got their info. We went so far as to move to one of the communities listed in the book, and after we got there we found out that the "excellent public schools" cited by these authors were ranked 48th in the country, and that there was very little for children to do. Health care was rated 47th in the country and was subpar, expensive and difficult to obtain. Not only that, the community was not friendly or welcoming to outsiders, and it was a most decidedly un-family-oriented environment. We stayed a year and left this town. We had not gone only on the basis of this book's recommendation, of course, but we had taken it into consideration as part of the total picture and it turned out to be extremely misleading.

Use with caution. If you want to relocate somewhere, visit the place, talk to folks, get the facts, trust your own judgment. Where to live is way too big a decision to trust to subjective opinions.

4 out of 5 stars New Dimensions.......2005-09-29

Years ago, I set about writing a book aimed at assisting "romantically challenged men" to find, win and keep (if desired) a woman. It focussed on enhancing financial status; physical shape and fitness; charming the ladies; relaxation; meditation; setting and achieving goals; understanding sexuality; advanced massage techniques (sport, remedial, relaxation and erotic) and advanced lovemaking techniques. In these areas, it went into considerable detail, yet there still seemed to be a dimension missing from it. It didn't focus on determining what "Ms Right" should be like for any given male; or how to identify her out of dozens or even hundreds of women; or how best to treat her, beyond what was contained in the massage and lovemaking sections.
Dr. Alex Avila's "LoveTypes" brought to light that which was missing from my own book. I was first exposed to the MBTI concept through joining a singles website and it led me to purchase the book, as interest in the concept grew.
Concurrent with this, I just happened to meet a fabulous lady to whom I became fiercely attracted just on first sight alone. The attraction appears to be mutual. I had not read "LoveTypes" at that time, however and one might suspect that allowing things to go forward with this lady regardless of the value of Dr. Avila's teachings could prove disastrous in the long run. It might appear to be even more so, given that I strongly endorse the MBTI system after studying it at considerable length and in great depth.
No way! Since I learned to classify people according to the MBTI system, I applied that to what I know of the lovely lady and there is EVERY indication that she is an ISFP Gentle Artist - the ESFP Performer's best match!
I'm ecstatic!
I believe the MBTI system has not yet evolved to its full potential extent, pointing out that each of the four indicator scales I/E; S/N; F/T and P/J are one-dimensional. I am of the opinion that the application of an extra dimension (based upon intelligence) to overlay each of these four would be the next valuable evolution in the system. I also feel that inborn traits, while a strong influence in MBTI determination, are not so absolute as the good Doctor believes. I am convinced an individual can evolve to the extent that progressively inheriting a different MB Type is not only possible, but natural in some people. As an adolescent, I, myself was a clear and definite INTP, but over time and now approaching 50, evolved into an ESFP with residual NTP traits still strongly enough in evidence to give me a secondary ENTP Innovator typing, but no longer dominant. Here is where I suspect a problem with the way the system sees the way the four existing dimensions operating. If a person is perfectly ambivalent in one of the dimensions - say, S/N, then whether they type as a Sensor or Intuitive in a seven point test can be one way on Wednesday and the other on Friday, depending on mere fleeting changes in frame of mind. It happens with me in the S/N and F/T dimensions and in any case, I recognise a greater capacity in myself than many people have to use BOTH ways to process input and BOTH ways of making decisions - not either exclusively, nor one necessarily more than the other. The capacity to use both exists in each of those two dimensions; therefore I use that capacity, naturally. Alright - it's a thing acquired over decades, but is so ingrained and habitual as such that it's natural to the full extent that really matters here. Speculating on this has led to me call into question the validity of regarding the four pairs of preferences as true opposites. Is it not possible to be capable of drawing one's energy and motivation both from within and without at the same time - to be both autocentric and extroanthropic, as it were? Is it not possible to perceive both the whole forest AND the individual trees at the same time? I suspect it is, as I like to think I do. And this is where the notion of INTELLIGENCE comes into it. Most people probably have the ability to swing more towards one preference in a given dimension at a given time - then the opposite way at a different time - but since when is swinging both ways at once impossible for everybody?
Well, it's food for thought, but NOT a criticism. Dr. Avila's book is certainly based on valid principles and I found it extremely valuable. Knowing, thanks to this book, the right general approach in my treatment of my Lovely Lady In Red cannot fail to make a difference! When I go back to finishing that book of mine, it will be to weave the MBTI system into its text together with pointers to other worthwhile reading such as "LoveTypes". Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Love Boat meets Briggs-Myers type classification.......2004-02-08

The author introduces the ideas associated with Briggs-Myers personality traits classification to the area of romantic compatibility. He does a good job of explaining the adjustment patterns of all sixteen such types. The book is easy to read. With a few exception, his recommendations boil down to: (1) Stick to your own MBTI type, or (2) A female I, F, or P will also be compatible with the corresponding male E, T, or J. (And vice versa). I believe author's recommendations are undamentally sound. The book is aimed at singles who are still looking, not at couples working through their differences. Though the later group may also find the book interesting and useful.

Weaknesses: (1) The author seems to borrow a lot from Keirsey and Bates' book "Please Understand Me: Character and Temperament Types" (There's a newer edition of this book). (2) It is not clear what additional/original research was supplied by the author; or the depth, breadth, and rigor of such "research". (3) The personality characteristics author describes are those of a well adjusted person of that Briggs-Myers type. There is no description of how these types behave in a relationship when they feel "under stress". (4) The personality test in the book is a McTest, useful for entertainment purposes only. (For a few bucks you can get a professional caliber test on the Web).

Still, on the whole this is a good book. If you are interested in getting a better understanding of the mechanics of romantic compatibility, and you never looked at it from the point of view of MBTI classifications, this book is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Accurate!.......2002-11-06

I had taken the Myers-Briggs personality test about four times before a friend of mine showed me this book. Having had the exact same results from the personality test each time, I had a lot of faith in the system and thought that this book could offer some great insights into comaptibility and the dating scene in general. I was not disappointed. I recognized my last failed relationship immediately and finally understood what it was that went so terribly wrong. Since I am an extreme in three of the components of my type, I have little patience for people whose types are the exact opposite of mine. What's more, the relationships that affected me the most, the ones in which I felt the most connected to my partner, were the same "perfect matches" that Dr. Avila recommends. The most refreshing part of this book was the fact that Dr. Avila makes no judgments about personality. One type is not preferrable over another. The personality traits I had previously seen as flawed or less desirable are now simply differences. In other words, they're not my type! The only part of this I was uncomfortable with was the advice on getting close to your match and making them fall in love with you. Because I am a romantic at heart, I squirm anytime anyone suggests being someone you're not in order to win someone's affections, though, in the end this is not what he intends. Still, I highly recommend this book especially to those who are intropspective and love psychology.

1 out of 5 stars This book falls flat.......2002-10-07

Dr. Avila proposes a theory for how people will be romantically compatible based on their Myers-Briggs type indicator. He has done a nice job describing the behavioral characteristics of each type. However, I disagree with his hypothesis on appropriate matches. I was surprised that Dr. Avila did not incorporate other research into his book.

For each type, he believes that the exact same type would be appropriate - or the exact opposite type. Other research suggests that people need to share at least 2 preferences to be compatible. Moreover, that the one dichotomy that people often match up on is the S and N. His theories are also in direct contradiction to Kiersey's Temperament - which states that Idealists and Artisans are fundamentally at odds, as are Rationals and Guardians. Avila recommends these matches.

I also found his recommendations for venues to meet partners to be weak. Unless one is in their mid-20s, I can't imagine going to a law library to meet an INTJ.

I don't think that this book was worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars A new way to look at dating.......2002-05-25

I have been reading many advice-books on finding the right partner. Almost all of them would suggest that I become someone that I'm not. I'm an introvert, and I have stop going to bars pretending to be an extravert. It is just too taxing on me.

Instead, I have looked at dating in a new way with this book. According to LoveType, I would find my potential mates in more traditional and quiet settings, like Churches and PTA. Those are definitely more comfortable for me. And yes, I have been quite happy after realizing this. I have a much easier time with people in those settings than in a bar.

There are several notes to mention. This is a book that generalize people. And like everything else in life, there are exceptions. Some people may disagree with the concepts in this book, and there are people who change. So try to read this book with a grain of salt. Another theme about this book is that it is geared toward long-term relationship. Because of this, there may be contradictions with other books. In "Please Understand Me," Keirsey and Bates say that opposite attracts. Whereas in this book, opposites get on each other nerves over time.

This book deserves high praises because of the numerous examples to clarify the Jungian lovetype. The MBTI nomenclature is a little arcane, but Avila has done a good job. Also, there are interesting tidbits, like example of good movies that portray the temperament, places to meet potentials, and scenarios to illustrate compatibility.

I think temperment-style is a great topic to discuss on dates. It's an easy way to bring out the personalities of each individual. This is a new way to look at finding a suitable partner. I'm keeping this one.

5 out of 5 stars Why Everyone In Your Family Needs to Read This Book.......2004-08-31

This book was recently featured in Dr. David William's newsletter, Alternatives. Dr. Williams finds Dr. Reading's work essential to creating a health plan for ourselves. I think everyone should read this book and get an understanding of how disease is created through the generations, what clues we can find from our family trees, and what we can sanely do about our health futures!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, well-reasoned reading.......2003-08-13

"Trace Your Genes to Health" is more than anything else an examination of the current state of the study of heredity and medicine. The author, Chris Reading, is a physician in Australia. After graduating from medical school he became qualified in psychiatry and specialized in organic psychiatry. From this point he began to notice the relationships between vitamin-mineral deficiencies, food allergies, and genetics as they affect neuropsychiatric disorders. Soon he was able to compile data to show that there are genetic factors in many, many problems that are not generally thought to be genetic in nature. Dr. Reading has distilled his years of experience and knowledge into this book.

It is not a book designed for self-diagnosis of problems and that is good. The book does an excellent job of explaining the basics of genetics and how the various types of dominant/recessive, autosomal, and X-linked factors work together to create a genetic pattern of inheritance. Throughout the book Dr. Reading builds a persuasive case for examining the family tree as part of a more holistic approach to health than just treating a symptom that occurs in your generation. Looking at the family history may reveal many clues as to how to treat a problem as well as how to avoid it altogether.

After discussing genetics and how it works Dr. Reading goes into the details of how to make a medical family tree. It includes the information you should be looking for, how to get the information, how to diagram it, and even how to approach your doctor with your findings. This is followed with a section on various illnesses and how they might have a genetic factor. The multiple appendices include information on Illnesses, categorized for family trees, symptoms and signs, congenital defects, phenotypes, sociological data, and recommendations to help you deal with problems.

"Trace Your Genes to Health" is a guide to help you take control of your health through investigating avenues that are generally overlooked. This would be a recommended book for anyone who has noticed a pattern of medical problems in their family and wants to know what can be done to help their doctor treat them. If you suspect that your family has had a pattern of medical problems and want to deal with it before it becomes a problem for you then this book will help you build the information necessary to determine if you need to be concerned or not.

5 out of 5 stars A must have orthomolecular resource book!.......2003-04-18

Dr Readings Book is work of a pure genius. Getting patients to track family illness to determine proper treatment is what is lacking in the current medical practice. Not only can the cause of disease be treated and identified but prevented in the newer generations. The book contains excellent case studies of those who have recovered from serious mental/physical sickness from using the knowledge of the family tree. I would recommend it as a must orthomolecular resource book.

When the joints start to ache, the salary dwindles, and freedom is yours at last, it's time to reflect upon where you'd like to spend your retirement years. Your obligations are few and the world is your oyster. If you're approaching those golden years, John Howell's guide to retirement living is a boon. It's not about retirement communities, it's about the towns and cities of the United States--what they offer the senior citizen in terms of recreation, culture, health care, and lifestyle; what to expect from their weather; and how much it costs to live in them. Howells investigates the relative tax burdens of each state, looking at property taxes, sales taxes, and whether each taxes pensions and Social Security. He also ranks the cost of living for housing, groceries, and utilities; provides the daily high and low temperatures; and lists the amounts of rain and snowfall across the seasons. From Georgia's Valdosta (population 40,000 and nicknamed "Azalea City") to Washington's Bellingham (18 miles from Canada, views of the San Juan Islands to the west and Mount Baker to the east), Howells paints portraits of more than 150 communities and their surroundings. Doubling as a guide for exploratory vacations and a pointer for anyone looking for a better place to live, Howells's research answers all the relevant questions. --Stephanie Gold

4 out of 5 stars A solid primer - sorting out the best places.......2003-12-17

I took `Where to Retire' with me (along with several good State guides - like Fodor's) when I went on a sixteen day journey through three Southwestern States (Nevada, Arizona & New Mexico) where I was looking for "the place" to relocate and semi-retire. Howells' guide gave me a `leg up' on the destinations that were `definite maybes'. The guide was extremely valuable in leading me to destinations I would not have considered without the guide. (Las Cruces and Ruidoso in New Mexico and Bisbee and Ajo in Arizona).

I found Howell's writing to be friendly and informative. He succinctly describes the best side of each of his selection, but, and I consider this a detraction, seldom does he point out negative aspects or flaws a community, town or city might have.

Sadly, there is no web-page references, appendixes or references that could give you additional information on his locations. He omits information as basic as Chamber of Commerce contact information, or the names of the main newspapers.

Finding a new place to live is a lot like dating - most places leave you wishing for more, a few are provocative enough to warrant placing them on your "maybe list" , and one, or at best two, will tantalize you enough to want to come back for more.

So, if you are at the beginning of your search for a new place to live, then this guide is a great first step. "Where to Retire" will speed up your search and give you a general feel for various places. This guide needs to work in tandem with other guides such as a State, Region or Country guide. Recommended 3.5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Good for those starting out.......2003-10-05

If basing a review on the 3rd or 4th editions is a disqualifier, perhaps I should recuse myself. Let me just say that I read Mr. Howells' 3rd edition when I just began looking for places, and I found it immensely helpful: worth five stars. The short, easy readings are enjoyable and make this volume a nice addition to the bedside table. The 4th edition contained a few updates. However, for the reader who has already narrowed the options, Where to Retire does not offer the detailed, substantive material one might wish for in order to refine those options.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased with information presented.......2002-09-11

I have read several retirement books dealing with various subjects about what to consider when retiring. Although I am about 1/2 way through this book, I am a little surprised and quite happy with the information so far. I liked the author's "at a glance" tax breakdown tables, and in several cases he asked questions and stated perspectives that I had not thought about before (and as I said, I have read other retirement books).

Howells style of writing and is very readable and interesting (unlike some other rather "dry" or limited portrayals of retirement information) and he sets forth reasonable criteria in my opinion. I have not yet picked up on the "male oriented hunting and fishing" slant mentioned by another reviewer (and I am a female). I really like this book.

This is a book written on a shoestring. A book which provides less factological information than 20 years old yellow pages....
I particulary enjoyed reading about selected places, where the author even did not mention cost of real estate, but mentioned that general Sherman was there and burned it. If someone really retires by this book, then the consequences must be tragic. To find places which have more 70% of the total population retired from elsewhere, and minimum house cost $200,000 one perhaps does not need a book for ($)....

Finding Ideal, Affordable Locations for the Golden Years

A book review by Robert J. Bruss (a San Francisco Bay Area real estate writer and attorney)

--Published in the San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle, August 21, 2000; The Los Angeles Times, October 1, 2000.

If you, a parent or relative plan to retire soon and are considering moving, first read John Howells' fourth edition of "Where to Retire; America's Best and Most Affordable Places." For many years, Howells and his wife have traveled the nation investigating the best, most affordable retirement locations. This great new book is the result of those travels.

The book focuses on 150 ideal places to retire but isn't primarily about specific retirement communities, although many are mentioned. For example, the famous Sun City, Sun City West and new Sun City Grand near Phoenix are t briefly discussed. More important, primary retirement regions are profiled, including specific towns preferred by retirees.

Howells begins each chapter profiling a retirement region, then he zeros in on the pros and cons of towns that appeal to retirees.

This new edition seems more direct and frank than the last one. To illustrate, when discussing Orlando, Howells says: "At one time I considered Orlando one of Florida's better retirement ideas. That was before it became so busy. In a short time, the city made a remarkable transition from a sleepy crossroad of citrus orchards and cattle ranches into a dynamic city, the fastestÿ2Dgrowing in the state."

Then he explains why he no longer considers Orlando a great retirement town.

It's no surprise that most of the featured retirement areas are in the Southeast, South and Southwest, with a few in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. Howells explains that recommending that people move to Montana, Illinois or Maine for year-round retirement would be irresponsible because of the inclement winter weather.

Each retirement area profile is quite detailed, with stateÿ2Dbyÿ2Dstate and townÿ2Dbyÿ2Dtown information. The weather details, income taxes and property taxes are highlighted. Also emphasized are medical facilities and recreation availability, especially golf courses. Transportation and cultural activities, however, could have received more emphasis.

Howells doesn't hold back on expressing his personal feelings about an area, such as: "I don't believe that all Southerners have suddenly changed into color-blind liberals, totally free of racism and full of brotherly love. My point and opinion is that the overall Southern attitude toward race relations has taken a dramatic turn for the better. From my perspective, the South today harbors no more racism than the rest of the country."

Especially valuable are the profiles of retirement areas that might easily be overlooked. For example, the author profiles inexpensive but delightful retirement towns in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. While emphasizing positives, however, he doesn't neglect their negatives, such as hot, humid summers.

Even if you're not planning immediate retirement and a move to a more desirable area, this new book is an enjoyable read. Having visited many of the retirement areas discussed, I find the author's explanations to be remarkably accurate.

Where does the author choose to live? He says only that he and his wife live in California a block from the beach, and spends part of each year at their second home in Costa Rica.
