Disciplines like strategy, leadership development, and innovation are the sexier aspects of being at the helm of a successful business; actually getting things done never seems quite as glamorous. But as Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan demonstrate in Execution, the ultimate difference between a company and its competitor is, in fact, the ability to execute.

Execution is "the missing link between aspirations and results," and as such, making it happen is the business leader's most important job. While failure in today's business environment is often attributed to other causes, Bossidy and Charan argue that the biggest obstacle to success is the absence of execution. They point out that without execution, breakthrough thinking on managing change breaks down, and they emphasize the fact that execution is a discipline to learn, not merely the tactical side of business. Supporting this with stories of the "execution difference" being won (EDS) and lost (Xerox and Lucent), the authors describe the building blocks--leaders with the right behaviors, a culture that rewards execution, and a reliable system for having the right people in the right jobs--that need to be in place to manage the three core business processes of people, strategy, and operations. Both Bossidy, CEO of Honeywell International, Inc., and Charan, advisor to corporate executives and author of such books as What the CEO Wants You to Know and Boards That Work, present experience-tested insight into how the smooth linking of these three processes can differentiate one company from the rest. Developing the discipline of execution isn't made out to be simple, nor is this book a quick, easy read. Bossidy and Charan do, however, offer good advice on a neglected topic, making Execution a smart business leader's guide to enacting success rather than permitting demise. --S. Ketchum

Book Description

The book that shows how to get the job done and deliver results . . . whether you’re running an entire company or in your first management job

Larry Bossidy is one of the world’s most acclaimed CEOs, a man with few peers who has a track record for delivering results. Ram Charan is a legendary advisor to senior executives and boards of directors, a man with unparalleled insight into why some companies are successful and others are not. Together they’ve pooled their knowledge and experience into the one book on how to close the gap between results promised and results delivered that people in business need today.

After a long, stellar career with General Electric, Larry Bossidy transformed AlliedSignal into one of the world’s most admired companies and was named CEO of the year in 1998 by Chief Executive magazine. Accomplishments such as 31 consecutive quarters of earnings-per-share growth of 13 percent or more didn’t just happen; they resulted from the consistent practice of the discipline of execution: understanding how to link together people, strategy, and operations, the three core processes of every business.

Leading these processes is the real job of running a business, not formulating a “vision” and leaving the work of carrying it out to others. Bossidy and Charan show the importance of being deeply and passionately engaged in an organization and why robust dialogues about people, strategy, and operations result in a business based on intellectual honesty and realism.

The leader’s most important job—selecting and appraising people—is one that should never be delegated. As a CEO, Larry Bossidy personally makes the calls to check references for key hires. Why? With the right people in the right jobs, there’s a leadership gene pool that conceives and selects strategies that can be executed. People then work together to create a strategy building block by building block, a strategy in sync with the realities of the marketplace, the economy, and the competition. Once the right people and strategy are in place, they are then linked to an operating process that results in the implementation of specific programs and actions and that assigns accountability. This kind of effective operating process goes way beyond the typical budget exercise that looks into a rearview mirror to set its goals. It puts reality behind the numbers and is where the rubber meets the road.

Putting an execution culture in place is hard, but losing it is easy. In July 2001 Larry Bossidy was asked by the board of directors of Honeywell International (it had merged with AlliedSignal) to return and get the company back on track. He’s been putting the ideas he writes about in Execution to work in real time.

3 out of 5 stars Universal truths presented but people views flawed.......2007-10-05

I thought there were many good take-aways in this book. Was it all original? Of course not. Most management books are saying the same things with a slightly different twist. I've got a bookshelf full of them. However, it seems that humans are so often incapable of remembering the fundamentals and have a tendency to overcomplicate things thus history repeats itself over and over.

The tone of the book regarding people gave me a little pause. Although I do think they were spot on in their assessment of how many companies do succession planning (not at all or incorrectly), it does seem to advocate that everyone needs to be a mini-Jack Welch type persona. I've worked in a company managed by ex-GE guys and believe me, they don't have it all figured out. I think organizations will benefit by having a mix of skills. Some people are better doers and others are better thinkers. Some superstars are good at both. It takes all types.

5 out of 5 stars execution 101.......2007-08-22

I did receive this book in an executive seminar; read it over couples of nights, a simple book with day to day tips to make things happen.

A must read for any one how dreams to become a successful executive and a reality check for those already there.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Talk.......2007-08-20

So many times in this marketing-focused world, we do very well at the talking but not very good at the walking. Many of us have seen amazing sales presentations . . . only to realize that the promises would never be met.

This book engages us in the discussion about how to do what we promise. It helps us to go beyond the sales presentation and really design a process by which we can follow through, build relationships and live a life that is full of integrity and trustworthiness.

3 out of 5 stars Prime Example of Mediocraty .......2007-08-11

This book did very little for me. Largely, the book is unoriginal and simply restates ideas already presented in tons of business leadership books. This book might as well have been written for the sole purpose of patting prominent CEOs, namely Jack Welch, on the back. You would be better served to bypass this one and just go read something by Welch on leadership.

5 out of 5 stars Practical business.......2007-07-27

I teach MBAs. Its well known in the field that MBAs are very competent in analysis but not so good in implementation. The reason for this is that most professors who teach business have never actually worked in business and are research analysts. They teach analysis because they are excellent in that area. I worked in business 10 years before becoming a professor. I teach my students about implementation and they are interested. This is a book about implementation at the CEO level. I'm thinking of using it as a supplementary executive MBA text.

This booklet provides vastly more instruction on the nitty-gritty of what teachers need in the classroom. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Marzano is a must read........2007-09-10

I wish I would have heard of Robert Marzano my first year of teaching. This book explains the research behind the classroom instruction and gives you ideas of what you should do. This is a great book to have with the "Handbook for Classroom Instruction that Works".

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-05-12

After hearing so much in teacher in-services about "Marzano strategies" I decided to check out his work myself. I was struck by the simple fact they are not his strategies as people talk about. Instead, they are research supported strategies that he and other authors/researchers have compiled and shrunk down into some user-friendly nuggets. The book is very easy to read, provides ample sources of real research, and is practical. The layout is great and the content superb. It is an excellent resource for teachers looking to improve their instruction based on reliable and somewhat traditional methods.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Resource for Educators.......2007-03-17

Provides tangible ideas that any educator can take into the classroom. I would also recommend any book by Kelly Gallagher.

5 out of 5 stars Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works.......2007-01-09

An excellent text for the first time teacher. Provides techniques and examples to assist in implementation of the techniques. Gives you more teaching tools for your toolbox. Easy to read, taking one chapter at a time. I highly recommend the book.

Book Description

Managing employees in today’s rapidly evolving workplace can sometimes feel like negotiating a minefield. Such recent new trends as flextime, telecommting, 360-degree feedback, the flattening of hierarchies, and the increased use of temps and contract workers present tough new challenges for supervisors in every field. This timely, completely revised and updated edition of Ferdinand Fournies’s classic management coaching "bible" shows you proven ways to get workers to perform at the highest level while eliminating the self-destructive kinds of behaviors that have become increasingly prevalent in recent years.
In this book, you’ll be taught specific face-to-face interventions you can use to enhance performance in every kind of workplace situation--from sales to creative brainstorming. There are also interventions uniquely suited to resolving problems ranging from low productivity to absenteeism to conflicts between individuals. You’ll learn precisely what to say and do so that each person you supervise will want to give you his or her best work--even when that person was previously thought to be a "problem employee." Packed with brand-new case studies from Fournies’s latest research into the dynamics of the modern workplace, this classic guide takes all the guesswork out of becoming the kind of inspired, "hands-on" manager that every company today is looking for!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A valuable reference on an important skill.......2007-09-02

This is an excellent book on coaching. You will read other views here to the contrary, but that is largely due to the many interpretations of the word "coaching." My primary focus is coaching managers and salespeople in a highly demanding, very technical field. There are many useful and effective tools presented in Fournies' work. Not everything will be applicable in every situation, but this book will give you many ideas for respectful, empathic coaching. If you are a "life coach" or a "mentor" you may prefer other techniques, but you'll still find some good advice here. Looking for achievement and opportunities to provide reinforcement can hardly be considered bad advice. Many managers simply don't know how to make the transition from technical expert or great performer to someone responsible for the performance of others. Fournies gives some valuable tips on doing so.

My recommendation is to read several books on coaching, beginning with John Whitmore's 3rd edition of Coaching for Performance. If you coach salespeople, also read Managing Major Sales by Rackham and Ruff. And if you are coaching others, read Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman; coaching others requires, first and foremost, self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy. Goleman's book will raise awareness of the importance of these qualities in business and in life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Handbook for New Managers.......2007-04-03

I have been a sales manager for 10 years. In that time I have read close to 100 books on management and leadership. this is one of my favorites. It is an easy read, it makes solid points and it provides clear direction on what a manager needs to do to help get the most out of their people. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best business book EVER.......2006-11-10

This is a must have for anyone in a supervisory or managerial role. Simple concepts, easy read...with actual dialogues to help you practice the coaching techniques discussed. And best of all, IT WORKS.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most useful management books yet.......2006-11-06

I wish I had found this book when I started managing people 20 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of painful trial and error. It is a remarkably practical guide that addresses the main problem that many managers face: how to confront performance issues in a way that will yeild a positive outcome, while not crushing or otherwise demotivating the employee. It includes examples of realistic conversations (including the extended silences that often happen, and the brush-off responses, the stalemates). It is also a book that can be constructively shared with your entire team - including those with performance issues - as it helps defuse all emotion and keeps the conversations on the actual and observable behaviors that are getting in the way of the business.

2 out of 5 stars Most Disappointing.......2006-08-24

Having worked in the mental health community for sometime, I was already familiar with this technique and have been using it already. I felt the book was really droll and somewhat condescending in tone. I wouldn't purchase it again. His companion book "Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed to Do and What to Do about It" is a more practical read and enjoyable too--I would recommend that one.

For every professional woman who wants to get ahead—but feels she is at an impasse—NICE GIRLS DON'T GET THE CORNER OFFICE comes to the rescue. Although it's less threatening and more politically correct for women to point the finger outwardly when assessing why they are overlooked for promotions and assignments for which they are superbly qualified, the real answers may lie inward.
In this book, Dr. Lois Frankel, an internationally recognized corporate coach and author, reveals the 101 self-sabotaging behaviors women learn as girls-behaviors and habits that are now holding them back in the workplace, such as couching statements as questions, tilting your head when you speak, waiting to be noticed and pinching company pennies. From executive to entry level, every woman needs to know what she is doing to subconsciously sound, look, act, market herself, and/or be treated like a "girl". This book will help women to become aware of when and how they are damaging their career and it will give them the advice and tips they need to help replace these self-defeating behaviors with more effective ones—and finally claim the corner office they so richly deserve.

I sure wish I had read this book years ago. I finaly understand a lot of issues that had always confused me, and I didn't realize how much I didn't know until I read this book. I'm buying copies for all of my close women colleagues, and starting on it again from the beginning. In fact, I know a lot of men who could benefit from reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars A good kick in the pants!.......2007-08-27

This book was a great eye opener to the "girl" mistakes I make on a daily basis. I have read the book several times and each time I find something new to improve on. I have found myself passing on advice from the book to other women in the office.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is the Bible for Women Who Want To Get Ahead.......2007-08-26

Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office is by far the best book I've ever read aimed at helping women own their power not only in the workplace but in every aspect of life. It's essentially a complete strategic plan for growing and advancing in your career. As a female business owner, I didn't realize how often I diminished my power by falling into many of the mistakes that Dr. Lois talks about in her groundbreaking book. This is one book that you need to keep in your professional development library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-07-22

This book examines how the messages schoolgirls in America absorbed about being "nice" are detrimental to them once they join the workforce where the rules of expected behavior have long since been set by men. I gave my copy to a young woman I was mentoring who was afraid to ask for time off, when her male peers tended to just inform the higher-ups. I immediately recognized this behavior from the book, and insisted that she read it.

5 out of 5 stars perfect guide for women in the business world .......2007-06-08

I like the book very much. It helped me much in my career.I made many mistakes before I found this book. I didn't believe the normal behavior of the women sabotage their career, but it is absolutely true. It helped me to gain a lot of success. It is a perfect guide for women. I would recommend this book to every ambitious business women, who would like to progress in her career. Good luck to everyone!

This book is well worth reading. For more information on creating personal wealth, try "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth," by Phillip Collinsworth.

5 out of 5 stars Napolean Hill? Of course its good!.......2007-01-19

"Each night I burn the records of the day; At sunrise every soul is born again" WOW! That was not written by Mr Hill, but he was smart enough to add it to his book. There is so much good stuff in this book I do not know where to start. Other reviewers here have written more on the contents of the book, read theirs to get an idea.

All I can say is that if you read and understand this book, then follow what you have learned, there is no way you cannot succeed in life. This book is filled with wisdom. If you are struggling in your life or on the job and need help, the help you need is in this book. Good luck on your journey!

5 out of 5 stars Among my first batch of books...greatest influence on attaining personal achievement in life!.......2006-07-21

The first batch of significant books that had the greatest influence on me in terms of attaining personal achievement includes mostly Napoleon Hill's books:

- The Law of Success;
- Think & Grow Rich;
- The Keys to Success;
- Success through a Positive Mental Attitude;
- Succeed & Grow Rich through Persuasion;

The others were from Clement Stone, Dale Carnegie, & Earl Nightingale.

That was the early 70's when I had just started work as a young engineer.

The author, Napoleon Hill, had impressed me most by his relentless dedication in spending some two to three decades of his life in pursuing & researching the success secrets of the rich & famous...with a little help from Andrew Carnegie, of course.

As matter of fact, many of the famous people he interviewed were also favourite role models of mine e.g. Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, just to name a few

Till this day, I have never forgotten what he said:

"The most powerful instrument we have in our hands is the power of our mind."

I have never ceased to be fascinated by the simplicity & the potency of his ABCs of personal achievement: CONCEIVE, BELIEVE & ACHIEVE!

It is certainly enlightening to note that even Stephen Covey had drew inspiration from Napoleon Hill's work even though he never made that credit. He only admitted that the 7 Habits had its origins from "200 years of success literature in the United States." That remark itself is self explanatory.

Anthony Robbin's Mastery program as embodied in his books as well as his audio/video resources is no exception, even though he has been influenced in larger extent by NLP.

If you look at & compare the 17 principles of personal achievement in 'The Law of Success' &/or the 13 Steps to Riches in 'Think & Grow Rich', one can obviously see the uncanny resemblance of the 7 Habits & the Mastery principles...in one way or another.

At this juncture, let me outline the principal theme of each book:

The Law of Success: the original course on the fundamentals of success - all the seventeen essential principles of personal achievement;
Think & Grow Rich: The seventeen essential principles are reframed & condensed in terms of thirteen concrete steps to wealth creation (in actuality, this is a condensation of the Law of Success);
The Keys to Success: a further elaboration of the seventeen essential principles with concrete suggestions, exercises & advice;
Success Through Positive Mental Attitude: joint authorship with Clement Stone, with a further emphasis on developing a positive mental attitude;
Succeed & Grow Rich Through Persuasion: joint authorship with Clement Stone, with a further emphasis on developing master salesmanship & networking;
[It is pertinent to note that Clement Stone actually built his insurance business empire with these principles.]

My most productive, personal learning experience from Napoleon Hill's work is the understanding - & application - of his success principle #1: Develop Definiteness of Purpose.

[Very surprisingly, J Y Pillay, former Chairman of Singapore Airlines, - who had been credited for building the airline to what it is today, A GREAT WAY TO FLY! - also credited his work axiom to this same success principle, but he attributed it to an ancient Hindu scripture known as Bhagavad Gita.]

I am certainly gratified to note that Napoleon Hill's work had casted so much influence on - & empowered - so many people in the world, including myself.

5 out of 5 stars The Distilled Power Of Thinking And Growing Rich..........2006-04-29

Sure, this is a wonderful starter kit (yes, I do have this book...) in addition to Hill's other books like "Think and Grow Rich", "The Master Key To Riches", et al. But more than that, it is a primer that makes you hungry for the mental nourishment of his full "Law Of Success" which I have just ordered through Amazon. And why am I giving this distillation five stars? C'mon, isn't it obvious, through these *distilled* principles you get a pretty good taste of the "spirit-voice" of Napoleon Hill. And when he says in later versions of "Think and Grow Rich" - 'through these pages we have met'. You know what he means here, even though it is shortened and edited. So, I've said enough, get started, happy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Truly inspirational. Builds upon "Think and Grow Rich". .......2006-02-13

There are thousands of self-help books out in the market and hundreds of self proclaimed "gurus" who have made a living by copying the wisdom in Napoleon Hill's books. As I went through some of those books I realized that there was not much in them that Hill had not already written about. I recommend quality over quantity. Instead of reading through many books, I recommend that you study the following works of Hill and internalize his wisdom:
1. The Think and Grow Rich Action Pack (1937) - I recommend the Action Pack edition,
2. Napoleon Hill's Keys to Success: The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement - this book,
3. Your Right To Be Rich [Unabridged] - this consists of 12 hours of live lectures covering the 17 principles, that Hill conducted in Chicago in 1954.
By internalizing, I mean studying in depth - analyzing the ideas, making notes and summaries. I own more CDs by Hill, but I believe that these 3 items make the perfect study plan on the Philosophy of Personal Achievement.
This philosophy is the end product of two decades of research conducted by Napoleon Hill. His research started when Andrew Carnegie (the steel tycoon who was then the richest man on earth) gave him the assignment of organizing a Philosophy of Personal Achievement. Hill, who was a poor journalist, armed with just an introductory letter from Carnegie, set out to interview over five hundred successful people including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman, William Wrigley Jr. and Charles M. Schwab. Hill then revealed the priceless wisdom of his research in the form of the thirteen steps to success (in Think and Grow Rich) and the seventeen Principles of Personal Achievement (in courses and lectures he conducted).
This particular book goes beyond the 13 steps in Think and Grow Rich. It covers the following 17 Principles of Personal Achievement (also known as the 17 Keys to Success):
1. Develop a Definiteness of Purpose
2. Establish a Mastermind Alliance
3. Assemble an Attractive Personality
4. Use Applied Faith
5. Go the Extra Mile
6. Create Personal Initiative
7. Build a Positive Mental Attitude
8. Control Your Enthusiasm
9. Enforce Self-Discipline
10. Think Accurately
11. Control Your Attention
12. Inspire Teamwork
13. Learn from Adversity and Defeat
14. Cultivate Creative Vision
15. Maintain Sound Health
16. Budget Your Time and Money
17. Use Cosmic Habitforce
The concepts taught by Napoleon Hill transformed my life. Everything he wrote about or talked about is thought provoking. He was wise, humble and funny. His philosophy is universal; he did not mix it with religion. The riches he referred to were more than money, for the Philosophy of Personal Achievement can be applied to anything in life.
Hill was well ahead of his time. "Think and Grow Rich" has a chapter dedicated to some of today's most important issues - Specialized Knowledge, Decision Making, Imagination and Organized Planning (in which he deals with Leadership). And his principles deal with Teamwork, Creative Vision, Health, etc.
I am greatly indebted to Napoleon Hill. The purpose of my writing this is to spread awareness of his work so that more people can benefit from it. This, I believe is the best way in which Hill would have liked to have been repaid.
If my review was helpful to you, I request you to select "Yes" so that the rating is improved and more readers will get to read it. Please also see the website of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, naphill dot org, which has helpful resources.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for life, possibly the best book ever on personal achievment.......2007-10-12

A good friend of mine recommended this book to me with much praise. So I found it on amazon used section listed for $0.01, which came out to about $4 with shipping. You might be thinking who cares how much I was able to pick this book up for.. THIS BOOK IS WORTH MUCH MUCH MORE! If everything in these pages are considered and used, there is not a price that can be put on it.

Life would be so much easier if all the knowledge and principles in these pages where second nature at an early age. The good news is that you are here now reading the reviews and likely to pick this book up like I did and buy it.

Out of all the books I have read all my life this is definitely in the top ten. If you think the bible is important to read, I would put this one right beside it if not in a more accessible place.

Anthony does a terrific job organizing his writing and making his concepts clear and understandable. There are many guidelines, rules, and strategies that can help you improve your life and ready you for what is to come next in your life.

People pay ridiculous amounts of money to find the secret success formula for this or that or the next thing.. and its all here for the taking.. Heck, its likely at the library for nothing. But this book is like a bible for life. A bible for the mind and the way to do and achieve.

Keep in mind that no book is going to kick you in the [...] every day to make decisions and take action, you need a wife or a mentor for that :)
This is however is a fantastic place to start. You will be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars I LOVED THE BOOK...EXCEPT FOR ONE THING.......2007-07-03

Tony Robbins has good advice. In fact when one of my employees moves into a supervisor or sales role I give them a copy of one of his books. And I credit his motivational books with some of my financial success. However he misses one point that all motivational speakers miss: no not everyone succeed no matter how much you pump them up. Some people lack the basic skills. For example to suceed in a given business you need motivation but you also need
1. Experience in that industry, extensive experience.
2. An innovative idea.
3. Working capital.

If you lack one or more of these then all the motivation in the world won't help you.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Kind.......2007-07-03

Quite possibly the most important book I have ever read. Robbins touches on every element necessary for success, no matter how you as an individual define success. Unlike the Robert Greene books (don't get me wrong, I love those, too!), Robbins actually delves into morals and ethics rather than trying to remove them from the equation. This was key for me, as I don't think I could stomach some of the tactics advised by Greene. Knowing how far you're willing to go (and the price you're willing to pay to get there) is paramount, and Robbins examines this in great detail.

5 out of 5 stars Important, well-done, and inspirational.......2007-04-30

I read this book originally years ago. I owned a bookstore at the time, and it kept falling off the bookshelf, so the last time I picked it up to put it back, I got the message and decided I should read it.

I had become a Hypnotherapist right about that time, and I was very interested in NLP, an associated therapeutic tool. I had read a couple of NLP books by the formulators of that work, and honestly, I wasn't really impressed with the presentation of the concepts.

When I read Tony's book which is very much about applied NLP, I found it one of the "meatiest" self-help books I had ever read, as well as one of the most motivational. I had yellow pieces of paper stuck in every 5 pages or so, and it was so highlighted that it was hard to separate the highlights from the plain text. I devoured that book.

Tony's message is one I fully embrace today. I believe deeply in the limitlessness of the human mind and spirit, which ultimately is this book's message.

If you are in a helping profession, or you want to be, or if you life is simply not working, please consider reading this book. If you open your mind to the possibility that you can have whatever you want or become the person you want to be, then reading this book, will propel you on that journey.

5 out of 5 stars A True Inspiration! .......2007-02-25

This book has truly inspired me and has allowed me to see things in a whole new light. I was given a copy of this book to read 4 months ago and it has truly changed my entire thinking pattern. I no longer have a grim outlook on life. I find myself living my life more joyously and realizing the potential I have within and I truly thank this book along with Neale Donald Walsch's Conversation with God - Book 1, for allowing me to see things from a totally different perspective. This book is an excellent follow-up to Walsch's Conversations with God - Book 1 and I truly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Buy an A4 notepad & pen FIRST - Then GET this book!!.......2007-10-05

Once you discover a really good book that works well & easy for you, all you want to do is RAVE about it!! With this outstanding book from one of America's greats - Brian's Tracy, why not? It really "does exactly as it says on the label" (or front cover in this case.)

You only have to briefly scan all of the reviews below to see that this is a powerful book that works. His message in simple & obvious, but with this book Brian shows you why & how so many of us don't or can't succeed in our ambitions to be happy & successful, when it is the right of everyone to enjoy life to the full.

If you've read his other book "GOALS!" first, then don't despair. This book has exactly the same message but goes much deeper into the workings of how health, wealth, happiness & peace of mind can all be achieved, providing you with a dearth of inspiration & motivation to try it out instantly & get going straight way.

This book is a little larger & a little harder going than "Goals!", only in that the chapters aren't broken down into convenient sections where you can pause & take a breath/ Nonetheless, it is written in such an enthusiastic way that keeps you interested all the way.

This ought to be the very last book you buy on the subject, but before you read (& more importantly re-read) it, please make sure you have a fresh note-book (preferably A4) & pen to hand. The book is jam packed with all the essential information to kick you off in the right direction the minute you start reading.

If you've got this far already then you need this book, look no further, your intuition was right in looking here. You won't be disappointed. It's quite a long book but with a little perseverance, you too will be glad you bought & read it. Check out the Amazon sales ranking to see how high this book is valued by thousands of likeminded customers.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this book ten stars!.......2007-09-02

I wish I could give this book ten stars! I've read most of the great motivational books - Napolean Hill's Think and Grow Rich and Master Keys to Riches, and Norman Vincent Peal's Positive Mental Attitude, plus dozens more, but this book summarizes them all. If you are looking for a quick fix, this book is not it. It is a book which will make you think, examine, question. Take it in small bites. My volume is underlined, starred, notes in the margins. This is a great summary of the best of the best. If you are in a hurry to reach your goals, this is the book you need to start with. However, it is NOT a fast process.

If you truly wish to turn your life around, this is the book for you. If you are not sure of where you want to go, this is the book for you. If you feel that YOU are different, that LIFE has given you some bad blows, this is the book for you. START HERE!

Mr. Tracy will take you by the hand. Help you to eliminate your excuses. Help you to examine your true goals. Help you to lay out your plans. He will not let you make exuses but will hold up the mirror of self examination so you can see where you are fooling yourself (but no one else, really). He will help you face YOUR truth, but will also kindly provide the path you seek to a better life.

I am planning to buy this book for all of my employees, although I'm not sure all of them will "get it." You make your own life; you are responsible for where you are right now...and for where you will be in the future. I am also planning to contact Mr. Tracy to see if he will be a guest speaker at my organization.

Folks, if you can buy only one book, then this is the one. I've read most of the other major players....Hill, Stone, Peale, Mandigo, Clawson, Collins....and they're all great. Many of them are at your local library. But for the very small price of this book, I recommend that you buy Maximum Achievement so that you, too, can underline, write, reread, make notes, and totally consume this book. This is not a paid advertisement. I have never met Mr. Tracy nor have ever read any of his other books (however, I intend to now).

If you want to make the most of your life, this is the book which will head you down that road.

This book covers an array of subjects but in essence it's a book for anyone looking at achieving success in life.

5 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING BOOK.......2007-04-17

I've read plenty of self-help books but I've never had a book make such a huge impact on my life. Brian does a great job of showing you simple strategies to help change every aspect of your life. My book is highlighted throughout and I wouldn't take anything for it. It is my self-help bible!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and uplifting book.......2007-04-05

This book motivates, stimulates and helps you focus your mind on meeting your goals. Words simply cannot describe how truly valuable a book like this is. Brian Tracy helps you in defining your goals and meeting them. I believe that this book ranks among best personal achievement and self improvement manual on the market.

This is an outstanding book that is presented in a clear and precise way that is beneficial to anyone in any walk of life. This book motivates, stimulates and helps you focus your mind on meeting your goals. Brian Tracey helps you in defining and refining your goals and guides you on how to effectively achieve them. He methodically guides you to organize your thoughts, think positively and then get into the action habit.

It is truly an inspiring and uplifting book. Therefore if you feel lost in life, with no direction and need upliftment, Brian Tracey will help you to discover what your ultimate passion in life is, thus helping to start living meaningful and purposeful life.

I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about changing their life for the better. However, the book can only provide guidance and it is up to the reader to put into practice the advice and wisdom from this fantastic book.

Book Description

Michael Gurian's blockbuster bestseller The Wonder of Boys is the bible for mothers, fathers, and educators on how to understand and raise boys. It has sold over 400,000 copies, been translated into 17 languages, and sells over 25,000 every year, which is more than any other book on boys in history. To follow up on this first book, which launched the boy's movement, he has now written this revolutionary new book which confronts what he and a lot of other parents and teachers in this country truly believe to be a "boy's crisis".

Here are the facts: So what can we do?

Gurian has the answer in this enormously fascinating and practical book which shows parents and teachers how to help boys overcome their current classroom obstacles by helping to create the proper learning environment, understand how to help boys work with their unique natural gifts, nurture and expand every bit of their potential, and enabling them to succeed in life the way they ought to.

Gurian presents a whole new way of solving the problem based on the success of his program in schools across the country, the latest research and application of neuro-biological research on how boys' brains actually work and how they can learn very well if they're properly taught.

Anyone who cares about the future of our boys must read this book.

4 out of 5 stars I understand him better now..........2007-09-26

As a mother of a young boy(5) who is experiencing several of the symptoms described in the book (disliking school, lack of participation, academic difficulties, occasional disruptive behavior, etc), this book has helped me, if nothing else, to be more empathetic, understanding and patient towards him. This in itself is worth a solid recommendation for the book. Our sons need love, support and understanding, despite the aggravation that their behaviour sometimes causes. In a world where teachers and doctors are quick to diagnose ADHD and prescribe drugs, this book also equipped me to have better discussions with doctors and teachers. It does not provide a quick fix, but strong support along the journey.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended - with one fault to note..........2007-04-18

This book has really helped open my eyes and understand more about boys. It is an excellent resource I have read more than once and I have recommended to friends and school teachers as well. It should be mandatory reading for teachers and counslers, and a definite read for all parents with boys. The only downside I found to this book, is the fact that it is written using complex terms and is very lengthy. Therefore, I think this book can be intimidating to the majority of people/teachers/parents. This book would be even more wonderful if it were written, in a simpler version, to reach out to the general masses who need help. It is also sad to note that the majority of health insurances will not cover a PET brain scan in relation to ADD/ADHD test. These companies would rather waste the money/time on pschological reviews and prescriptions, rather than utilize a clear-cut, physically determinable answer such as the scan. It makes one wonder how much doctors/insurance companies get for prescription kick backs and how much they stand to lose if the PET scan is used.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightened - opened my eyes and mind........2007-03-23

Having a daughter as a first born, and she being an almost perfect child, receiving compliments about her from all directions, I thought this boy of mine was - well I was confused. I was attempting different types of disciplinary actions yet it never worked for him, or rather me. Then, having read the book, I see him in a most different light. Learning to accept him as just another boy, and I am sure his teachers had told me that he is just another boy, yet I did not comprehend the idea, until reading this book. Accepting this fact, I now approach my son differently, and he sees me differently, and we enjoy each other's company to a higher level than before. I am thoroughly grateful that I was able to find such a great book that helps me understand and bond closer to my son.

5 out of 5 stars Boys Really Are Different.......2007-03-22

If you have boys this is a great book. It has helped me understand my sons more than ever. Great suggestions for school, too.

5 out of 5 stars I simply can't express my gratitude..........2007-02-20

to the author for writing this book! I truly also can't add anymore to the rave reviews this book has received. I can only say that this book is fantastic and has helped us understand "the minds of boys" tremendously! We've given several copies to our son's school for the teachers' library. Thank you, for a super book!

A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Mel Levine received acclaim for his previous book, A Mind at a Time, which argued that children's different learning capabilities demand diverse teaching strategies. In The Myth of Laziness, Levine isolates another group of kids--so-called "lazy" children who aren't working up to their potential in school--and explores the causes of their low performance. Levine scoffs at the perception that any child is lazy, stating that "everybody yearns to be productive." These children, according to Levine, are simply experiencing "output failure" due to different neuro-developmental weaknesses.

Levine produces case studies of seven children and adults who have been labeled lazy and identifies internal sources that are undermining their production. Many of their output issues revolve around difficulties with writing, as is the case with Russell, who is hindered by his low motor skills, or Clint, whose long-term memory lapses prevent him from expressing himself well. Other weaknesses, such as poor oral language ability, mental energy dysfunction, poor idea generation, and organizational problems, plague the individuals in these case studies. Levine talks briefly about external factors that contribute to low output, such as socioeconomic background, family life, and negative role models. In the profile for Scott Murray, Levine even has the humility to admit that he was unable to reach this young man. External influences--namely, Scott's privileged upbringing--were too pervasive in causing his output failure.

The last few chapters are devoted to suggestions for what parents and teachers can do to foster productive output in their children and students and how to detect a problem that is internal rather than environmental. Tips on how to cultivate writing skills, set up an organized home office, and assist with homework are aimed at parents while teachers are encouraged to consider individuality among their students' learning styles. Finally, the appendices offer two worksheets to help students plan stories and reports. Two additional worksheets help pinpoint whether output problems are the cause of poor schoolwork. This is a valuable book that will give parents some guidance in solving their children's productivity issues and preparing their children successfully for adulthood. --Cristina Vaamonde

Book Description

How many times have you heard a teacher say that your child has tremendous potential "if only he'd just apply himself" or "if only she'd work just a little harder"? How often have you said the same thing to your son or daughter? Or perhaps you have a coworker who can't seem to finish anything; his reports are never in on time, or her projects are always behind schedule. No matter what excuses you hear, you suspect that laziness is the real reason for your colleague's low productivity.

Almost no one is actually lazy, says Dr. Mel Levine, author of the #1 national bestseller A Mind at a Time. Low productivity -- whether in school or on the job -- is almost always caused by a genuine problem, a neuro-developmental dysfunction. Despite this, untold numbers of people have been stigmatized by unfair accusations of laziness, many of them adults who still carry emotional scars from their school days.

In The Myth of Laziness Dr. Levine shows how we can spot the neurodevelopmental dysfunctions that may cause "output failure," as he calls it, whether in school or in the workplace. Dr. Levine identifies seven forms of dysfunction that obstruct output. Drawing on his years of clinical experience he describes eight people -- children, adolescents, and adults -- he has worked with who exhibited one or another of these problems. He shows how identifying the problem can make all the difference, leading to a course of corrective action rather than to accusations of laziness and moral failure. For example, a child who is unable to plan or to think ahead, who cannot consider different methods of accomplishing something or has difficulty making choices may wait until it is too late to complete an assignment or may act impulsively, creating a pattern of bad judgments and careless errors. Dr. Levine explains how such a child can be helped to learn how to plan ahead and weigh various alternatives. This sort of problem, if untreated, can persist into adulthood, where it can wreak far more havoc than in the classroom.

The Myth of Laziness explains the significance of writing as a key barometer of productivity during the school years. Because writing brings together so many neurodevelopmental functions -- such as memory, motor control, organization, and verbalization of ideas -- it can provide crucial clues to pinpoint the sources of output failure.

With its practical advice and its compassionate tone, The Myth of Laziness shows parents how to nurture their children's strengths and improve their classroom productivity. Most important, it shows how correcting these problems in childhood will help children live a fulfilling and productive adult life.

5 out of 5 stars Demystifying the "Lazy" Child.......2007-10-20

Since I work with students who have a variety of learning differences that hinder their output, I was very encouraged by this book. It is so useful to have someone methodically lay out different case studies so you know what to look for, then provide the keys to overcoming those deficits. Only a few of my students fit the profile of "output failure" as described by Dr. Levine; however, his methods for assisting students to get organized (notes, schedules, school supplies) and for developing stories and reports, meet many of my students' needs.

I especially like the demystification process, not only for the student, but also for the parents. Good grades are a source of very high pressure, and students with language learning differences, such as those on my caseload, usually earn C's when they are working their absolute hardest and have accommodations. Rather than admit that their child has difficulty learning, many parents believe the children are lazy, and therefore assign more work or insist on an additional class. This book provides tools to explain to parents how they can best benefit their child by being an advocate and the best cheerleader on the child's team, not the child's harshest critic. Dr. Levine advises "appropriate breaks" from work, so I too recommend a balance of life. He also provides a checklist for parents to "cultivate output".

There is so much new information coming out regarding diverse ways to remediate, accommodate, and compensate for learning differences, and Dr. Levine is at the forefront of this movement. I especially appreciate that his work comes from his heart. His ambition in the field of pediatrics is driven by his genuine concern and compassion for his patients. This inspires me to be more ambitious in my reading and research as I seek to find the best teaching methods to match up with each of my student's individual needs. Dr. Levine reminds us that what works for one doesn't necessarily work for someone else, so in order to serve my students best, I need to be creative in my search for strategies, open-minded to change, and above all, patient in awaiting long-lasting results.

On the flip side, Dr. Levine maintains that there is no harm in giving rewards, but I disagree. If a child is doing what is right in order to get a reward (or to avoid punishment), he is extrinsically motivated and he is not being truly responsible for his choices and actions. Giving rewards infers that doing right just for the sake of doing right is not enough. This philosophy is important because it not only affects a student's output or behavior but also his self-esteem, his sense of satisfaction with life, and his feelings of self-control and empowerment in all areas. I encourage my students to consider their choices and do what is right and appropriate at all times, whether anyone is noticing or not. I teach them that their lives are the sum total of their choices. I hope this type of thinking will keep them safe and on the right track no matter where they are or what they may be tempted to do, because their motivation will be intrinsic. This is a minor point. I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Levine's book.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for student with poor written output.......2007-06-21

Mel Levine's book, "The Myth of Laziness" helps provide the reader with insight into the complexity of children's difficulties with written tasks. The author drives home the point that often what we may view as "lazy" due to poor performance or lack of productivity on written tasks, often seems to have a neuro-developmental basis. By identifying the reasons why someone is having difficulty with written tasks or why someone even tries to avoid the tasks, we can better help them. The book uses case studies to discuss some of the many challenges a person can have which can lead to poor written output by an individual. The book is definitely a great resource for anyone who has a child who is having difficulty with written tasks. Written tasks can certainly be a problem for many children who are very strong readers or have strengths in many other academic areas. Although, the book contains far from an exhaustive list of interventions for students having difficulty with written output, it certainly offers some good suggestions. If you are looking for such a list, this might not be the book for you. However, if you are looking to better understand the challenges a student with poor written output might be facing, this would be an excellent resource. It is entertaining to read about the various students from varying circumstances, what Dr. Levine's neuro-psychological testing revealed, and ideas and strategies they suggested to help the students. A lot can be learned from reading about each of the cases, even if (like a few of the reviewers) you don't agree with all of the suggestions Dr. Levine makes. I think we could all agree that just calling someone "lazy" and giving up on them, really doesn't help that person. Helping them to understand their strengths and weaknesses likely will help them along with a parent or teacher putting a few interventions in place.

4 out of 5 stars Productive Reading.......2007-05-07

Even some of the best-informed educators lose objectivity in the classroom. Similarly, parents wonder what is really happening there, having to rely on the teacher's analysis and the child's rendition. With all of this potential confusion comes a mistake easily made and painful to undergo: labeling a bright but differently wired student "lazy". This book clears the air, reminds the adults to steer away from blame and coercion and adhere instead to productive strategies that will help a child learn in her own way.

The book is particularly useful to adults who work with children whose most pressing obstacle is low output of school work. Here are strategies for improving productivity through self-tracking...the student can track his own progress in producing more completed assignments, for example, which relocates accountability and satisfaction where it belongs: with the student. Many strategies to attain improved output are presented and are generally practical, which is a breath of fresh air to all concerned.

This is especially helpful if read following Mel Levine's "A Mind at a Time". For secondary and college age students, "Learning Outside the Lines", by Joathan Mooney and David Cole should take its place immediately on the reading list.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful.......2007-03-02

"You can do it if you just put your mind to it." "You just need to buckle down." "She's incredibly smart she just needs to learn to focus." "I guess I'm just lazy." These are the sort of phrases that haunt a lot of people through school and into adulthood. Dr. Levine describes a series of composite case studies of people who suffer from what he calls, "output failure." Filled with original thinking in neuroscience and education this book argues that many failures to achieve aren't do to simple moral failings put to diagnosible and treatable developmental problems.

If you or your child is struggling in school and has perhaps even received a diagnosis of ADHD, ODD, or bipoloar disorder then you may find some new ideas here. As a pediatrician, Dr. Levine recognizes the value of medication to help with some conditions but he also acknowleges its limitations. He makes a credible case that many stumbling blocks especially to writing skills can be parsed with neurodevelopmental assesment and treated with behavioral strategies.

There are some limitations to the book. First is its focus on children and adolesents. As a pediatrician its not unexpected the author's knowledge and advice revolves mainly around kids. But adults struggling with their productivity to the point it's affecting their lives significantly may find some help with this book. Often naming the problem itself provides catharsis. Secondly diet and exercise are ignored. The purpose of the book isn't to provide a comprehensive list of treatments but I think readers would benefit tangibly from a brief description of how much regular exercise can improve self esteem and productivity.

5 out of 5 stars The Myth of Laziness.......2006-11-05

Once again, Mel Levine has created an excellent resource for parents, teachers and other professionals working with children. This, as with many of his other writings, should be required reading for special education courses as well as educational psychology courses.

3 out of 5 stars Brian Tracy's Ultimate Goals Program is much better.......2007-10-18

It's hard to fault this product too much, as it does offers extremely good advice, but I if I had heard it before Brian's Ultimate Goals Program I might have overlooked an extremely important and mature mentor.

The contrast was so striking between the two programs that I got the distinct impression that Brian himself had changed a great deal in the intervening years. By the time of the Ultimate Goals Program, for instance, his voice takes on a very different lilt -- a much kindlier one -- and the character of his advice changes accordingly. What is introduced here in the form of a Bandleresque psychology of minimizing negative emotions at all costs becomes a much more refined, elegantly systemized and completely results-oriented approach later on, with the psychologizing distilled to only the truly relevant bits.

If you are new to Brian Tracy's audiobooks and would only like to buy one of them, get The Ultimate Goals Program. I can't recommend it more highly.

3 out of 5 stars Good business advice.......2007-09-15

I expected more from this CD but on the whole not a bad start. There are better books by him. This seemed more like an amalgamation of his other work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!! High-value item for serious goal setting!!!.......2007-01-10

Very clearly defined method of setting and achieving personal & professional goals. Worth every penny!! Systematic approach toward framing one's mindset toward setting and achieving any goal. Enjoy!!

3 out of 5 stars Too short.......2006-08-16

I am ambivalent about this product. On one hand, what Brian Tracy is saying is some really powerful stuff and I believe all of it works, if only I had the tenacity to implement all that he's suggesting in my own life. But only 2 hours? I hope these CDs have a high replay value, or I'm going to be bitter about my "investment".

We'll see. Maybe these CDs will make me a better achiever or they won't. If yes, then I'll come back and give them 5 stars :)

5 out of 5 stars I have listened to this CD a few dozen times - The Very Best in Self Help!.......2006-08-03

This CD is very powerful. I typically read a book or listen to a tape looking for one or two great ideas. This CD has more than I can count and every time I listen to it I pick up on something new that is useful. To become successful and self actualized you must know how to achieve these things. This is a great guide that will help you unlock your full potential.

As a note, this CD doesn't delve into spirituality and the power of God. If you are a spiritual person a good compliment to this book is 7 Steps to Living Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen.
