Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service.......2005-11-02
This text was extremly overpriced. I recently saw the same book in our State Fire Academy bookstore and the IFSTA catalog for $21.00. I paid over $45.00 from Amazon.
An important area of the Fire Service.......2004-03-25
Brunacini covers customer service in a to the point witty way. His book is written in plain english and includes past experiences. A good read for those interested in fire service customer service from cover to cover.
A Must Read Book for Fire and EMS Administrators!.......2001-11-10
An excellent look at an often neglected topic!
This author captures the essence of firefighting today........1999-07-08
Alan Brunacini has put into words what the standard for any fire service organization should be. This book is entertaining, enlighting, and on the mark.
I have been a firefighter for over twenty years and seen firefighters that are truly great, and firefighters that seem to get the job done but have no special spark. I have always tried to figure out "What is the difference between the two?" Chief Brunacini, details the difference. The really great firefighters obviously take that extra effort to do the job right. Alan Brunacini describes how it can be done and has been done. The only problem with the "WOW" service he is talking about is it will take a lot of understanding by management to get to this level. This new standard for the fire service is not for the future, it is NOW.
This book describes a standard of service that every firefighter can understand, can attain, and feel great about. Bravo Bruno.
Inspirational. Fun to read........1999-06-07
This book is entertaining and fun to read wih great stories and fun cartoons. The book provides a sound basis for implementing change at every level of the fire service. It helps departments put the "service" back in fire service. I especially enjoyed the way that the book relates to personnel on the street, those that have the customer contact. It shows how everone wins when we provide customer service: the department, the individual firefighters, and the citizens. While the focus is on the service provided by emergency crews, the message can be adapted for other individuals in the fire service, from fire inspectors to administration. This book should be required reading at the academy - maybe the first topic.

ASIN: 0324204841 |
Book Description
This text is a briefer paperback version of the widely-adopted Miller/Jentz BUSINESS LAW TODAY: THE STANDARD EDITION. THE ESSENTIALS offers the very same traits that have made that book so successful edition after edition - fundamentally that it provides the legal credibility and authoritativeness of a traditional business law book, while also offering the visual appeal and student friendly features students are used to seeing in books for many of their other courses. Though the text is fun for students to read, it does not accomplish this at the expense of important information - it goes into the necessary detail to completely explain law topics. The book truly offers an instructor the best of both worlds - a credible business law source, which students will be motivated to read. Its magic and the cornerstone of its widespread success is in this ability to appeal to both instructors and students without being mutually exclusive. It also offers the most comprehensive teaching and learning support package on the market, with something to fit many different instructional or learning styles - a reflection of West Legal Studies in Business's ongoing commitment to partnership, leadership, and innovation in providing the highest quality materials available for Business Law instructors and students. This text explicitly meets the AACSB curriculum requirements.

Great Book No serial number for online part.......2005-09-24
I bought this book from Amazon recently, they have been great about getting it resolved but from what we can tell after having replaced twice the serial number that they mention on the book is not included in any of the books Amazon has in stock.
A digest of rules too broad for serious instructional use........2000-01-02
The 5th Edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is a slightly pared down, paper-bound version of the authors' hard back college text "Business Law Today, - Text and Summarized Cases, Legal, Ethical, Regulatory and International Environment."
SUMMARY. The book fills the bill as a "Readers Digest" reference work on general legal principles. But, it is too broad in its treatment to be a reliable resource for comprehensive instructional purposes.
BASIS. This reviewer is an attorney with over 25 years experience teaching business law. The writer uses the 5th edition of this work, and used the 2d, 3d and 4th editions of the text, as a required instructional resource in accordance with directions from academic administrators.
POSITIVE ASPECTS.
- The 5th edition of "Business Law Today, The Essentials" is well written and very readable. The presentation is visually attractive.
- It includes new material on the up-to-date issues created by e-commerce and cyber law.
- There are excellent chapter summaries highlighting, in outline form, the major topics covered in the chapter.
- There are numerous marginal references to Web sites and sources for additional help and information.
CONCERNS.
- Content appears to have been sacrificed for aesthetic white space & wide margins. This has been a continuing trend. With each "new edition" there has been less and less textual material. Major legal concepts are given a short treatment of only a sentence or two. However, the interesting and provocative discussion questions at the end of the chapters raise issues which, if they have been addressed by the courts, cannot be correctly resolved based on the information in the text. The result is students have a misconception as to how a principle works or how the majority of courts might rule. When missing information is added by the instructor, student reaction is frustration and distrust of the text.
-Whole concepts have been deleted from text between editions.(Although, thankfully, the topic of usury, a major concept in business law which was totally deleted from the 4th edition, is again mentioned in the 5th edition.)
- Case examples too often tend to focus on the more colorful, unusual exception to a controlling legal principle, rather than explaining the rationale for the majority rule or demonstrating how a principle works in daily business situations. The result is often student confusion, since one does not learn a general principle where the only example of the its application is an exceptional situation where the general rule is not apply.
- Support materials and test bank answers to questions are unreliable. While the answers given in the test bank are legally correct, about 10-15% of the time it is reported the correct answer to a test bank question cannot be extracted from the textual explanation on the cited page in "The Essentials" edition of the text.

Customer Reviews:
The Good Estate.......2007-08-28
This is a well written, very readable treatment of the subject of estate planning. If one submits to the discipline of reading it thoroughly one will secure the necessary knowledge to ask and answer the pertinent questions of an estate planning lawyer.
Cuting planning costs.......2007-01-19
This book is a must for senions who need to understand the ramifacations of nursing home costs and related retirement issues. Attorney costs as high as $200.00 per hour and or flat fees of thousands of dollars, cause seniors to procasinate from getting their financial house in order. This book does a good job of explaining the need for proper planning and the ease in which it can be done withour having an attorney do ever phase, and prepare every document. Yet it does point out the need for an attorney in properly preparing the more difficult documents. I highly recoment this book for seniors and others also.
Don't Visit Your Attorney without Being Informed.......2006-09-28
As an estate planner and attorney, I know that presenting this kind of information in an easy-to-grasp way isn't, well . . . easy. But Michael Palermo has done it. In Crash Course in Estate Planning, he explains everything from wills to planning for children to protecting your investment interests. The fact that the AARP endorses The Essential Guide is a great indication of the value of the information. The "Hints" and "Warnings" that Michael gives throughout the book could only have come from a real life practicing estate attorney who has faced these problems with clients many times. In addition to having an estate planning practice, Michael is also a Certified Financial Planner and the combination of wisdom garnered from his financial background and legal background serves his readers well. Michael knows which issues take a little more effort to understand, and he provides more detail accordingly. This is a great book for anyone who is preparing to tackle the estate planning process. Palermo provides clear and direct answers to very difficult questions. I highly recommend his book. Be advised though, if you read the book you may, at least in some areas, find you know more than your attorney!
James Lange, CPA/Attorney and author of Retire Secure! Pay Taxes Later: The Key to Making Your Money Last as Long as You Do
This book is outdated........2006-06-21
It is difficult to understand how this book got the endorsement of AARP. It has only had three reviews and the last one was in October of 2005. Being published in 2004 puts the information behind the times, especially if you live in California. As the author of the book "Everything A Baby Boomer Should Know," published only weeks ago, I think AARP should reevaluate what it recommends to us Baby Boomers as a reliable resource to educate our need to know how the system works.
The best advice.......2005-10-28
This is not a "how to" book. It is an exhaustive discussion of all of the options people have in planning their estates. This includes what can go wrong and how to avoid these problems.
It covers all of the possible ways to minimize taxes for your estate and your heirs.
The writing style is concise.

Intellectual Property Stories 2005
ASIN: 027598205X |
Book Description
Business has always been driven by ingenuity and innovation. Now, more than ever, with an economy built on "knowledge work" and intangible value, developing--and protecting--intellectual property is vital for individuals and organizations alike. This book presents a brief but thorough survey of U.S. patent law, presented in the clearest possible terms for nonspecialists--including scientists, engineers, business managers, and entrepreneurs--as well as students and practitioners of patent and intellectual property law. Drawing from both practical and academic experience, Alan Durham explains the basis of patent law and covers such topics as the application process, claim interpretation, the requirements of novelty and non-obviousness, disclosure requirements (such as "enablement" and "best mode"), and infringement--including infringement under the controversial "doctrine of equivalents." Complex legal issues are explained through in-depth examples, many borrowed from actual cases, and feature such timely topics as patent protection of computer software, business methods, and biological materials. This revised and updated edition discusses recent developments in the law and draws from the most current case authority. Used as an introduction to the topic or a handy desk reference, this book will be an indispensable guide to the dynamics and mechanics of patent law. Durham illustrates complex legal issues through dozens of in-depth examples, many borrowed from actual cases. Of particular interest are cases involving patent disputes over computer software, business practices, and biological materials. From building a better mousetrap to building a better mouse, Patent Law Essentials defines the coverage and limitations of patent law and its protections, and shows how they are applied in the courts and in practical application. This revised and updated edition discusses recent developments in the law and draws from the most current case authority. Used as an introduction to the topic or a handy desk reference, this book will be an indispensable guide to the dynamics and mechanics of patent law.
Customer Reviews:
the best book for foreign students or professionals.......2007-10-17
I am Japanese. This book is the best for foreign students or professionals who begin to study US patent law. Plain English and clear points. Thank you!
Good overview, but a little outdated.......2007-06-18
I read this, along with many other books from amazon on patent law, in order to prepare for the patent bar exam as inexpensively as possible. Well, as they say, you get what you pay for. I ended up not passing. I used OmniPrep to prepare the second time around, and passed with no problem.
Essentially Great.......2007-01-03
By far the most useful and best written overview of patent law I have found. Very good as both an introduction for those new to the field and a review for those already involved. Good value for money.
Perfect for the scientific professional.......2003-03-11
Perfect for the scientific professional or manager who must deal
with U.S. patents. Although technical throughout, I was never
lost or floundering. Well organized, well written, and just the
length and depth, I wish all technical books were of this
quality.
This book does NOT deal with corporate strategy for intellectual
property, nor does it get into much detail on how to write a
patent. There are, however, other books that directly address
these topics.
An excellent warm-up for the real thing.......2002-08-24
While waiting to find out if my application to the PTO to sit for the next patent bar exam was approved, and prior to obtaining a full-fledged course of study on patent practice, I decided to invest in this book to get a better idea of what I was getting into. I must say that not only did I get a comprehensive introduction to the topic, but it was also an enjoyable read. The author uses subtle humor to get the points across, as exemplified by his use of various, patented mousetrap designs as examples, and his knowledge of patent law is superb. Indeed, there is hardly a page in the book sans footnotes and citations to case law.
Now that I am into the thick of learning the subject in detail in preparation for the exam, I find the subject matter familiar and that the overall perspective gained from Patent Law Essentials is invaluable.
This is a well organized, informative book that should be useful to any technical professional, especially, who wishes to demystify the arcane practice of patent prosecution.

Satisfies the longstanding need for a practical, down-to-earth guide to intellectual property licensing
Intellectual property licensing is one of the most crucial, and least understood, income drivers among inventors and high-tech companies. Written by acknowledged experts in the field, Essentials of Intellectual Property Licensing provides managers with a clear, concise overview of IP licensing. In practical, down-to-earth language it clearly explains licensing strategies; deal making; royalties and royalty rates; patent, trademark and copyright licenses; and basic contract law. Managers learn the significance of intellectual property licensing on their bottom lines, and how to value both established and new intangible technologies. And, with the help of case studies and plenty of real-world tips and techniques for structuring and negotiating the best deals, the authors outline a complete step-by-step process for developing and implementing an effective intellectual property program in virtually any type of enterprise.
Paul J. Lerner (Suffern, NY) is Senior Vice President and General Counsel of General Patent Corporation, an intellectual property management company. Alexander I. Poltorak is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of General Patent Corporation.

good read (considering the subject).......2007-07-18
This is a good guide for introducing someone to the subject. Like the title says, it's the essentials, giving the reader a foundation to come back to wherever the particulars of their situation might take them. It is a big plus that the book is surprisingly readable - Important given that the typical reader might have to read the book in order to develop an understanding of why they should have an interest in the subject.

Written with the entry-level paralegal in mind, this text embraces a systems approach that builds proficiency in real estate file management. It provides a foundation of legal concepts, furnishes procedures on how to handle various client matters and involves the reader through exercises. It includes information for all subjects covered in basic paralegal real estate texts including the most common real estate litigation a paralegal may encounter. It also illustrates a commercial closing from beginning to end. The instructor's manual provides a synopsis for each chapter, a suggested instructor approach, answers to review questions, and highlights areas where state-specific materials need to be introduced. Customer Reviews:
The ideal textbook on real estate law for paralegals.......2007-04-02
Not only is this an ideal textbook for a course on real estate law for paralegals, but also much of the training that is required of real estate paralegals can be advantageous to the notary signing agent as well. There is much overlap in the two fields.
What I find most useful about this textbook is that you are not just reading theory. It's all applicable knowledge. Each chapter has clearly defined objectives that outline what you will be able to do upon completion of it. You will immediately be able to apply what you have learned in real life situations. Every aspect of real estate law is covered.
Notary signing agents will find Part II of the book extremely useful. It is entitled: The Closing: Residential, Commercial, and Construction Loan Closings.
One of the main reasons I bought this book is because it is the textbook that is used in a real estate paralegal course at a school that I am unable to attend at this time. I wanted a book that would be ideal for self study. There is also a workbook that accompanies it. I have compared several textbooks on real estate law for paralegals, and find this one to be the best. I highly recommend it.
The Essentials of Real Estate Law for Paralegals.......2007-03-08
I paid a good price, received in good time and it was in great condition.

Customer Reviews:
A true contribution to the architectural profession.......2006-12-21
Ava Abramovitz has distilled her years of experience as attorney, advisor and mediator into a wonderfully readable book. Her insights and suggestions will benefit every architect who has strugged with uncertainty during contract negotiations. A wonderful addition to our professional library.
ESSENTIAL to say the least.......2006-09-20
Did you know that negotiation can be taught? Most architects do not understand that the rest of the world NEGOTIATES. This book is absolutely ESSENTIAL to the business end of architecture, as well as to life. How do you handle a client who wants full ownership of documents? Do you know what liability that can open you and your firm up to?! Do your key employees know how to negotiate? What about negotiating design? Are all aspects of the design so important that you're willing to walk away from the job, the client and future work; or do you know how to negotiate a win-win situation? This book is for ANYONE in the firm who is in direct contact with the client or other representatives of the client. GET AND READ THIS BOOK! (It will even help with non-professional relationships.)
Valuable Advice for Either Side of the Table........2004-03-03
Contract negotiations are often tedious and frustrating. This book was refreshingly useful because it laid out strategies for achieving desired negotitated results. The book's advice and approach can be applied with profit to any contract negotiations, but it's examples are based on negotiating the complicated agreements between Owners and Architects. I've used it with success to explain the Architect's needs and concerns to Owners and, just as frequently, I've used it when representing Owners to explain why a certain compromise and position in negotiations with Architects makes sense. It is a book with balanced advice on how to negotiate in general and how to do so in particular in the Owner/Architect context. It's many specific examples and suggested solutions to typical negotiation issues have saved me hours of time attempting to articulate to opposing counsel or my clients what the author has already compiled in this book.
I've found its contents so useful that I've taught portions of seminars to Architects, Contractors and Owners using lessons and insights taken from the book. The attendees always have commented favorably on the concrete, practical advice they have learned from those portions of the seminar.
This is a valuable book. If you're involved in any negotiations, especially construction, it is worth purchasing.
a great book about negotiation and communication.......2003-08-12
I teach architecture students a course on professional practice and have made Architect's Essentials of Contract Negotiation required reading. Of all the sources I've read on this topic, Ava Abramowitz offers the most accessible and well-reasoned explanations of what every design professional must understand about negotiation (and communication).
Abramowitz's many years of experience as a counselor, teacher and mentor to architects has clearly given her insight into how architects think, and she uses this insight to great effect. My students enjoy reading this text (especially Chapters 3&4) because it connects to the way they see the world (and helps focus that vision) in language that rings true. Don't be fooled by the word "Contracts" in the title; this is a great book about architects and negotiation in general and one that I believe all architects should own.
Better than Getting To Yes.......2003-05-03
I am not an architect, but I loved this book. It clearly laid out steps real people can take to negotiate tough problems -- whether construction-related or not. The chapter on communication skills and the one on dispute resolution alone were worth the price of the book. In fact, I would say, as a senior manager of a growing business, that anyone who seeks to accomplish anything important in any business would benefit from the information this book contains. It should be required reading for all.
