4 out of 5 stars Best when used with experienced SAP PM consultant.......2007-10-19

This is the best book available when used along with experienced SAP PM consultant. Its for sure that you can not replace assistance of a experienced consultant, even author has mentioned it couple of times. Its very precise but it would have been of great help if this book contained the screen shots of SAP IMG, perhaps SAP did not allow the same as SAPPRESS's official partner is different. If your business knowledge is good then you can go for this book for going through customizing steps for Plant Maintenance. Wish you best of EFFORTS.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent SAP PM resource.......2007-01-18

I've been an SAP PM analyst/configurator for 3 years and I found this book an excellent resource on the IMG for PM. Ian brings in some great new ideas on how each img item can be used and also points out important integration points. I also own SAP R/3 Plant Maintenance by Stengl and Ematinger and that book is a great resource on the business process. So combined the 2 books are all you need in your SAP PM library.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2006-08-27

This is a good reference for all into SAP Plant Maintenance. I believe it is one of the better books around on its topic.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for SAP PM Consultants & End Users.......2004-12-14

As a long time SAP Plant Maintenance and Materials Management consultant, I have read or looked through most of the SAP Plant Maintenance related books (and of course have looked at the on-line help provided by SAP for different screens, transactions, and fields on a regular basis). This is by far the best book on SAP Plant Maintenance, not only from a consultant's perspective, but also for all super-users and to some extent the end-users of the Plant Maintenance module.

Here are some of the reasons why I found this book extremely well written, helpful, informative, and an enjoyable read:

* This book is focussed on providing a good understanding of the configuration required to implement SAP Plant Maintenance. The author has not only identified PM specific configuration elements, but also talks about what configuration to touch and which one to leave alone based on his past experiences. This type of information is obviously not available in online help provided by SAP.

* This book clearly explains not only how to setup the PM module, but also what impacts some of the settings have on downstream transactions within or outside the Plant Maintenance module. Therefore, it gives a very good overview (and in some cases, a lot of detail) around the integration points of the PM module with other SAP modules.

* The title of this book is a bit misleading. It may lead you to believe that it only discusses Configuration of the Plant Maintenance module, but about one-third of the book is focussed on describing Plant Maintenance related master data, business processes, and reporting in SAP. This section should be very useful to all super-users and end-users as it is easy to read and understand, and cites real-life examples and business processes to explain complex SAP PM elements.

I have personally used this book as a reference material when making presentations to clients, configuring their systems, or even in developing training materials around the SAP Plant Maintenance module. I therefore recommend this book highly to anyone involved with implementing SAP PM, or trouble-shooting/using the PM module, or just interested in expanding their knowledge of different SAP modules. A Must-Read book for anyone interested in SAP Plant Maintenance module!

Book Description

This beautifully illustrated and eminently practical book is the first to offer a complete tour of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.2, the integrated digital photography workflow application that allows serious photographers to import, select, develop and showcase large volumes of digital images. Augmented by photos and case studies from a demanding road test in Iceland, award-winning photographer Mikkel Aaland explains how Lightroom 1.2 can improve the way you work.

After watching -- and often helping -- Adobe create Lightroom entirely from the ground up, Aaland (author of Photoshop CS2 RAW) was ready to see how well it would do in the field. He organized a group of 12 top-notch photographers for a trek to "Nature's Light Room", the pristine Icelandic landscape where each summer day is bathed in 22 hours of horizontal light -- and where the only studio was Lightroom on a laptop. In Photoshop Lightroom Adventure, Aaland uses hands-on knowledge from the trip to demonstrate how Lightroom 1.2 can help you create the best possible image under any conditions.

This unique tutorial walks you step-by-step through Lightroom's: With many gorgeous examples shot in the soft natural light of Iceland, this book lets you see the results for yourself. Mikkel Aaland's trademark ability to teach complicated topics on digital imaging with straightforward, easy-to-follow text makes this book a valuable learning tool for anyone serious about digital photography. This is not an update of previous Lightroom versions, but the first book that's completely up-to-date for Lightroom 1.2.

5 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration for any artist.......2007-09-21

Great book, not only from a reading perspective, but from an art
perspective. The book is beautiful, inspiring, and informative. I
really enjoyed the read, and the pictures are fabulous. Initially,
when I requested a review copy, I thought it was for Photoshop CS3, I
was unaware that Adobe made software called Lightroom. I have a Mac
with Apeture, which is similar to Lightroom, but I downloaded
Lightroom and tried it out as I read through the book. I love the way
the book tells a story as well as teaches you about the software.
Mikkel does a great job teaching about the software, I learned a
great deal about the software and found that I really like it. The
imagery in the book is breathtaking and, Mikkel really helped me
develop my photography eye further to make my images much more
appealing. I thought the book not only teaches you how to use the
software, but also how to critique photos.

5 out of 5 stars Lightroom Adventure.......2007-09-17

Terrific book. It explains everything you would want to know about Lightroom. I'm particularly pleased that Mikel Aaland delayed the book to include the 1.1 upgrade to Lightroom. The book is well laid out, with lots of photos and illustrations. The format is easy to read and specific info is easy to find, if, like me, you want to read up on a particular topic rather than read the book from front to back.

5 out of 5 stars Take your workflow to a new level.......2007-09-03

I highly recommend this book if you are serious about using Lightroom to take your work flow to a new level. I have read multiple online tutorials and watched multiple video Podcast on Lightroom but this book will help "fill" in the gaps with the online tutorials. This was the first book I found that addressed v 1.1. All other versions deal with 1.0 and if you are a user of v 1.1 you know there are differences within the versions.

It does not have the humor built in as Scott Kelby's books but I found this book to answer many questions I had concerning Lightroom. I have been using lightroom on a nearly daily basis since early 07.

1 out of 5 stars save your money.......2007-08-29

purchased this on the recommendation of Reichman at Luminous Landscape--the photographer was part of the Iceland team that is central to the book. Book is superficial at best--not worth the money even if there are numerous beautiful images throughout. The author simply glosses over every bit of the application-a very shallow intro to a very powerful product!! Better to invest in any (better yet all!) of the vastly superior books by Tim Grey, Scott Kelby, or Martin Evening--not only do these other writers provide a more thorough intro but they also share wonderful insights as to how the appplication can be used. find one of these other books before spending a penny on this one!

1 out of 5 stars Great photographs of Iceland, Not a Great Book on Lightroom.......2007-08-23

A lot of big egos with a number of the contributors pushing the book and themselves and their
own sites and workshops (see Luminous-Landscape). If the actual photographs, even at low resolution, were part
of the exercises, this book, which is too much about alpha and beta testing the product on a junket for Adobe, would make sense.

I am no fan of the official ITIL documents, considering them to be a necessary evil that will assure the correct information when taking certification exams or ensuring that you implement ITIL correctly. This book is an exception because it dispenses with the heavy emphasis on theory and generalism that characterize the other books in the series, and gives an actionable approach to implementing and maintaining software asset management processes and procedures.

Coverage of all of the important aspects is solid. It provides a pragmatic and realistic approach to making a business case for software asset management, defines clear roles and responsibilities, and defines key processes. These processes include verification, compliance and strategies for license management, and how to implement them. There is a section on tools and technologies, but this is somewhat weak (although the material on tool selection is solid).

Additional material includes business case templates, sample asset management policy and asset data management considerations.

Book Description

In an information-based economy, organizations need to create an environment and a culture that support the reuse of knowledge across the company. This book illustrates what knowledge management is and how it can benefit an organization, as well as how to reduce knowledge isolation and stop the constant seeping of valuable knowledge from an organization. After presenting an overview of the subject, the book drills down into the processes, best practices, and technologies for unlocking an organization's knowledge assets.

5 out of 5 stars The Microsoft Solution for Communities of Practice.......2002-05-14

Conway & Sligar take the idea of a community of practice one step further than Wenger, McDermott and Snyder (In the book "Cultivating communities of Practice"). The central theme is knowledge management, with the problem being how to transfer knowledge from one generation of workers to the next. Conway & Sligar argue that employee loyalty is not common anymore and in fact employee's transfer jobs today more than in the past. The authors write that one way to enable knowledge management is to establish and promote communities. A community of practice is a group of people who share things like information, ideas and personal experience in an area of expertise. The authors see a CoP operating at the workgroup, department or corporate level. An example of a CoP is the Microsoft Database Management community which is focused on the use of Sql server and whose members are scattered around the world. In this community of practice the users of the knowledge give feedback to the producers of the knowledge through a rating system.

Conway & Sligar view knowledge management as a cycle with a number of stages of which a community of practice is one. A person or individual usually creates knowledge. Then the knowledge is shared where a community or group explore the knowledge in greater detail, discuss, argue and analyze. Then the knowledge may undergo refinement in a collaborative corporate environment. Finally the knowledge may enter the public space for mass adoption. In the knowledge management scenario of Conway & Sligar the CoP plays a major role in the second stage. The CoP can be formal or informal and the members share a common sense of purpose. It can be internal or external to the company and be based on a product, technology, role, function, industry or market. The authors believe that a community profile document should be created with items such as: a vision statement, a mission statement, roles & responsibilities and objectives for the community. In a CoP a number of community roles need to be filled such as: a community leader, subject matter expert, special interest group leader, the expert, community member, guest and launch team. The authors believe that the community must be compelling and fully engage members, where all members are fully rewarded for their contributions.

The authors both work for Microsoft Consulting Services in the area of knowledge management. They base their ideas of communities of practice firmly around the Microsoft Sharepoint collaboration software solution (which runs as an Active Server Pages application in Windows 2000 Internet Information Server). This software includes threaded discussion forums as part of its functionality for knowledge management. In fact communities of practice should be implemented with the discussion board functionality of the software. Discussion board software forms the core feature of many web sites using virtual community. Therefore, the authors end up blurring the boundaries between a community of practice and a virtual community.

5 out of 5 stars A KM Breakthrough.......2002-04-13

Unlocking Knowledge Assets is not only a great overview of the much-misunderstood KM field; it is truly a breakthrough management science. With great brevity and clarity the authors outline how knowledge management's effectiveness can be accurately measured and linked to the goals of your business. If managers can pinpoint what knowledge worker activities are producing results, then those activities can be encouraged and rewarded. Taking the maxim "you can't manage what you can't measure" to heart, this book provides a first-of-its-kind paradigm that should shed new light on a firm's most valuable and mysterious resource: knowledge.

David H. Brett, CEO and Founder, Knexa.com

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for the business executive.......2002-03-14

This book is written for the business executive to help them make the decision to implement a KM system in their organization. Even though the book is written by Microsoft Consultants it is not a sales pitch for Microsft technologies. The expertise these authors bring to this topic makes the book an excellent read for anyone planning to implement KM. They begin by discuss the importance of making sure the culture is represented within the system in order to support adoption and constant growth of the knowledge assets contained in the system.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Beginners And Gurus.......2001-11-18

Managing a Portfolio of Mutual Funds is a well written, entertaining, book that will help anyone better understand money management using Mutual Funds. The book starts with an excellent section on goals and planning, in which Rutherford makes a compelling argument about why this is a critical step towards effective financial management and explains how to best complete and document the plan. He follows this with a discussion of Asset Class Portfolio Design, which is the foundation for the rest of the book. Once this introductory material is finished, Rutherford discusses various investment strategies and how to implement and monitor each of them, starting from the more basic ideas of Passive Investing and Index Funds and moving to the more complex areas of Active Investing and Manager Style Analysis. Although the amount of detail gets a bit thin once he begins the chapter on Passive Investing and the book never regains the tight, lucid arguments and explanations of the first sections, it's a first-rate book on investing with Mutual Funds and should be read by every serious investor AND portfolio manager.
