Book Description

From Library Journal

"This hefty volume, edited by Middleton (Metropolitan Railways: Rapid Transit in America), George M. Smerk (The Federal Role in Urban Mass Transportation), and Roberta L. Diehl (Indiana Univ. Pr.), traces the intertwining historical and cultural narratives of North American railroads. Five insightful essays on railroad development, social history, and shifting technology written by various historical specialists provide a strong informational preface to the specialized entries of varying length and subject matter that follow, in which everything from intermodal traffic to women in railroading is covered. Straightforward and rich with detail, each entry is written by a different expert and concludes with references. The editors have included period illustrations, photographs, and cartoons that underscore the concepts presented. Sure to interest both laypeople and scholars, this is highly recommended for public libraries and American history collections." --Library Journal, May 15, 2007

From Trains

"To distill all of North American railroading into 1,312 pages is a feat in itself; the the Encyclopedia of North American Railroads does it so remarkably well is nothing short of phenomenal. This could be the most ambitious railroad book to appear in 100 years! And that's just what the editors wanted." -Trains, June 2007

4 out of 5 stars Railroad Encyclopedia.......2007-06-14

Very good for a lot of things, but a random sampling of railroads shows that that listing, at least, is not comprehensive. Valuable for most people with an interest in American railroading.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I wanted.......2007-04-02

The good news is that this is the most comprehensive reference book I've seen on North American railroad practices and history.

The bad news is that this was a bit off the mark, for being dubbed the Encyclopedia of North American Railroads.

My expectation was that this would be the ultimate guide to North American railroads, from A to Z. I anticipated exceptionally thorough coverage of the railroads, their histories, and maps, maps, maps.

What this volume is, is an anthology of topical entries that vary in length and subject. Included are abbreviated railroad histories, biographies, terms, social commentary, and technical aspects of railroading. In that regard, it is hard to imagine a topic about railroading practices that this volume doesn't touch on.

Some approximate page accounts include: Amtrak 1 ½, Civil engineering 26, Intermodal traffic 4 ¾, National parks 3, New York Central 3 ½, Norfolk Southern 1 ½, Railroad occupations 17 ½, Sports and railroading 2 ½, women in railroading 4, and World War Two and railroading 4 ½.

Don't throw your reproduction Rand McNally railroad atlases away just yet, because the appendix with maps leave much to be desired.

The first eight maps are Amtrak 2004, Maine area 1945, B&M and NH 1945, New England West (undated), Mohawk & Hudson (undated), Boston (modern I think), Mid-Atlantic railroads (early), and Mid-Atlantic states CA 1945.

The maps are black and white (It's a $100 book, would some color have killed them?), they appear to have most mainlines, though I suspect not all branches. Not all railroads are present in relevant maps. The Pennsylvania and New York Central have their own maps, but a Mid Atlantic states map without either, doesn't really tell a story.

So if you are looking for an authoritative general reference book on North American railroading history and practices, this is it.

If you are looking for the ultimate railroad by railroad reference title, this doesn't replace The Historical Guide to North American Railroads, the Train Watchers Guide to North American Railroads, or the Short line Railroad Guide or the aforementioned Rand McNally reprints.

I ordered the book based on the title. While I was very disappointed with the thrust of the work, this is a well-executed all-in-one reference that I'll probably use once or twice a year.

5 out of 5 stars the best general railroad reference book.......2007-03-28

This is the best general-purpose railroad reference book I've seen. It's
oversized and 1300+ pages, lots of drawings, maps, and photographs (but
none in color). Other "encyclopedias" I've seen deal primarily with the
major railroads. This book covers major and minor railroads, history,
technology, innovations, equipment and people--from Edison, Pullman, and
Loewy to Gould, Hill, etc. There are things here I have not seen
elsewhere--such as the Lima Locomotive Works promotional specifications,
which also list prices.

This is the kind of book wherein you open it at random--a history of the
Northwestern Pacific Railroad. The following pages list railroad
occupations--engineers, dispatchers, etc--17 double-column pages. Open
the book again to John Jervis, civil engineer who became president of
the Chicago and Rock Island, and John (Casey) Jones whose death inspired
the song. There's a huge amount of material here.

You're not going to get everything in one book. If it's maps you want,
there are some good atlases showing route maps of major railroads, plus
the Rand McNally historical railroad atlases, and more recently, Steam
Powered Video's excellent regional atlases showing all lines that were
ever built. Robert Lewis has an excellent "Handbook of American Railroads"
(1952 & 1956--used copies through Amazon) that show route maps for all
the 127 class 1 railroads at that time, plus narrative, rolling stock,
profit & loss, number of passengers carried, etc. There are books that
cover just steam or diesel locomotives, books just on the C, B & Q, etc.
But if you could have only one source book, and want information that
might otherwise require a trip to a large well-endowed library, this book
will be your definitive source.

Book Description

Women have been active in American business since the eighteenth century, and while they have made enormous contributions, they have also had to overcome tremendous obstacles. This encyclopedia chronicles the accomplishments of women in American business since the colonial era and discusses the historical events and issues that have concerned them. The encyclopedia additionally summarizes important legislation and organizations and covers such industries as accounting, advertising, banking, and manufacturing. Quotations from the women profiled capture their experiences in their own words. Included are more than 300 alphabetically arranged entries on such American businesswomen as:
  • Lucille Ball
  • Clara Brown
  • Hattie Carnegie
  • Liz Claiborne
  • Abby Joseph Cohen
  • Jenny Craig
  • Carleton S. Fiorina
  • Jamie Gorelick
  • Rosa Maria Hinojosa de Balli
  • Abigail Pierrepont Johnson
  • Estee Lauder
  • Christine Liang
  • Martha Stewart
  • And many more. Entries discuss the lives and careers of these women and cite works for further reading. The encyclopedia also includes roughly 100 interspersed entries on topics central to American businesswomen, including career planning, childcare, diversity, education, the finance industry, flexible work arrangements, golf, and real estate. Appendices list the most influential businesswomen in America, the top women-owned American companies, and women business leaders from particular ethnic and cultural groups, historical periods, and industries. A chronology details important events in the history of women in business, and an extensive bibliography concludes the encyclopedia.

4 out of 5 stars not that many movies.......2007-03-20

The dictionary lists movies with predominantly Negro themes, and also Negro actors. As you might expect, famous movies like "In the Heat of the Night" and stars like Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte are described. The text also gives listings for topics like the late, unlamented "blackface" custom of early vaudeville and movies.

Note that as far as Negro-related movies go, there are very few before the late 1960s. Plus, if you look at the actors, few of them rose to prominence before then, in any type of movies. All this of course reflects the pervasive discrimination of earlier times. While the book seems impressively comprehensive, there really aren't that many movies in it, compared to all the films made in the US since the 1910s.

        Product Description

The lure of gold in the American West beckoned to thousands of hungry settlers eager to stake a claim, reap the abundant wealth of the territory, and escape often difficult financial conditions at home, whether in Eastern cities, Europe or China. These prospectors found that Western gold and silver veins were elusive and subject to dry up with little notice. Forced to move often in search of the next big lode, they left behind them hundreds of mining camps and settlements, many of which still exist across the Western landscape. This reference work catalogs silver and gold mining camps state-by-state in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Each entry includes location, names of miners known to have worked the site, year of discovery, and ore value. Unique details of each camp are given, including historical facts, buildings and businesses present, and, frequently, interesting anecdotes about the resident miners. The work is indexed by topic and mine, and appendices offer a glossary and a copy of the Miners' Ten Commandments, originally published in the Placerville (California) Herald in 1853.

          Book Description

African Americans historically have played a role in shaping the economic development of their race and of the country, though only recently have they received attention in this regard. Current representation of African Americans in some of corporate America's top positions and as owners of technology companies reflect current trends in society and is a step toward closing the racial gap. Written by more than 50 contributors, entries discuss both historical and contemporary figures and topics that help illustrate the occupations and businesses of blacks throughout history. Spanning the early 18th century to the present day, over 200 alphabetically arranged entries describe people and topics related to the history of African American business development, including: Berry O'Kelly, Advertising Agencies, Franklin Delano Raines, National Association of Black Women Entrepreneurs, Oprah Winfrey, Retail Industry, National Alliance of Market Developers, Kenneth Chenault, Spike Lee, Legal Defense and Education Fund, Myrtle Potter, Quincy Jones, Faith-Based Entrepreneurship, Credit Unions, Sylvia Woods, Eddie Murphy, Minority Enterprise Development Week, and more. Primary documents and statistical tables are also included to help display the numerous contributions of blacks in business.

          Book Description

Throughout the 20th century, American recording studios turned out some of the world's greatest hits. Now Randy McNutt, an award-winning journalist and record producer, lists more than 500 of them while recalling their unusual stories. "Too Hot" is the first book to list many of America's smaller but successful regional studios as well as the larger national ones. As Marc Bristol, editor-publisher of Blue Suede News, says of the book: "The stories of the places where the records were made are just as interesting as those of the bands and artists." For the author, heaven is finding another old two-track studio and a veteran recording engineer who's willing to talk about its heyday. McNutt interviews dozens of recording engineers, studio owners, label executives, musicians, singers, songwriters, music publishers, and other talented people who personally provided much of the information about their historic studios. In this indispensable reference work aimed at music fans, historians, and recording enthusiasts, McNutt interviews studio owners from Maine to California to learn about their rooms, hits, innovative recording techniques, and, of course, their challenges. (The story about crickets living in the old echo chamber of Cinderella Sound is worth the price of the book.) McNutt also details the types of recording equipment, studio addresses, kinds of echo chambers, studio quirks, and whatever other important information he can find. A strength of the book is its large listing of studios from the 1950s to the 1970s, including the hit factories ABC Recording (later Lion Share) in Los Angeles, American Recording in Memphis, Amigo in L.A., Electric Lady in New York, Motown in Detroit, Sun in Memphis, and other seminal recording sites. But readers particularly enjoy reading about the many smaller, unsung studios, including the Music Factory in Miami, Jewel and King in Cincinnati, Accurate Sound in San Angelo, Tx., Royal in Memphis, Sambo Sound in Louisville, Ruby in Hamilton, Ohio, Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, N.M., Original Sound in L.A., Norfolk Sound, Norala Sound in Sheffield, Ala., Kin-Tel in Atlanta, Cliff Herring Sound in Fort Worth, Counterpart in Cincinnati, Cinderella in Madison, Tn., Jim Beck Studio in Dallas, Beautiful Sounds in Memphis, J.D. Miller Recording in Crowley, La., Sea-Saint in New Orleans, Suma in Painesville, Ohio, Link Wray's Shack Three-Track in Maryland, Fred Foster Sound in Nashville, Associated Recording in New York, Studio By The Pond in Hendersonville, Tenn., and others in out-of-the-way places that have cut their grooves into recording history. McNutt talks to more than 150 people involved with historic studios, including: recording engineer Lee Hazen ("Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye,") singers such as Billy Joe Royal, Roy Head, Malcomb Yelvington, Ray Scott, and Dickey Lee; King Records engineer Chuck Seitz, legendary New Orleans engineer Cosimo Matassa, Cleveland DJ Bill Randall, Ace Record chief John Vincent, engineer-musician Jimmy Johnson of Muscle Shoals; the engineers Bill Halverson (L.A.), Ken Hamann (Cleveland Recording), Robin "Hood" Brians (Tyler, Tx.), mastering engineer Larry Boden, Ron Newdoll (engineer of "Last Kiss" at Accurate Sound), and Phil Kaye (ABC). This thorough and detailed book consists of 224 pages, 8.5-x-11 inches, softbound, with a tough cover and about 20 pages of photos, ads, and llustrations relating to the original studios. Made in the United States by Thomson-Shore, one of America's finest book printers, "Too Hot to Handle" is built to last and will remain a collector's item for anyone who cares about America's recording history.

5 out of 5 stars Old Studios Make Great Reading.......2006-06-16

The author makes a major contribution to the field of music history and recording by combining the music (by this I mean the songs and the stories behind them) with the studios and their individual histories. It is a successful marriage of scholarship and pop culture. Although he discusses the major studios in large cities, the book's real strength lies in its exploration of the smaller, out-of-the-way studios. The writer has done his homework; the result is significant. Of course, he does not list every old studio in America; he does not need to. As it is, he expertly processes literally thousands bits of information to form a musical mosaic. Actually, I would like to have seen even more of the smaller studios listed, but, with a book of about 224 pages in larger format size, I cannot fault his efforts. His use of primary sources will be invaluable to future researchers. This allows the principals to tell their stories without interference. Also of interest is the detailed listing of equipment in hundreds of large and tiny studios across America, all evidently pieced together through trade magazine stories, liner notes, and personal interviews. I am surprised by the many smaller studios that possessed Ampex equipment as early as 1952. No wonder the old recordings sound so good. -- Sterling E. Price, Ph.D; Brooklyn, NY

5 out of 5 stars Too Hot to Handle.......2005-10-23

This book answers a question that I have been wondering about for a long time. What ever happened to the Huey Meaux studio down in Houston. I love his old records. Guess Huey's personal life is his own, but I prefer to concentrate on the music, not hte people who make it. I could recommend this book to anybody who likes the old music, like me, because it is packed with tons of old studios and songs that you don't hear much about.
Another old studio I like is AMerican in Memphis, where Elvis did Kentucky Rain. If you have heard of it, you can find the story in this book and even an interview with Dan Penn. THe guy is way too good.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at American recording studios.......2005-10-18

The author has done a fantastic amount of research, and has written a compelling story of people starting up little studios in their hometowns. They happen to be places like FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound! Great reading!

5 out of 5 stars My Take on Recording Book.......2005-10-09

Yeah, the book is cool because it looks like a fanzine for we music & recording fans. I'm too young to have seen them, but I drool over those old tubes and two-trackers that he shows. What I dig most is all the smaller studios that get shortchanged. THey made a lot of contributions. Read how "Last Kiss" was recorded down in Texas!!! That is one weird story. I didn't even know that some of the old engineers were still alive until I saw their interviews. Great read. Great info. Two tracks live on!!

          5 out of 5 stars History Saved.......2005-10-06

I liked this book very, very much. My favorite music is Southern R&B, so I particularly enjoyed the author's interviews with Cosimo Matassa and other old-time Southern recording engineers. Their work still sounds good. They have great stories, too, like the time Cosimo tried to cool off his studio with ice and a fan. I hope the Katrina disaster did not destroy some of our wonderful musical historic sites throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. I recommend Too Hot to Handle to anyone who loves music and recording.

4 out of 5 stars Add This Encyclopedia To Your Library Today!!!.......2005-09-16

Most moviegoers and television-watchers are familiar with the cinematic accomplishments of Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones and other African-American icons. But how many recognize the names Oscar Micheaux, Fredi Washington, Spencer Williams or Nina Mae McKinney? How many know that in 1929 MGM released the first all African-American "talking" picture: "Hallelujah"? Or that "Beulah" (and not "Julia") was the first television sitcom (1950 thru 1953) to star a black woman: Louise Beavers? Or who was the first African-American to portrayed "God" in a motion picture? All of these facts and much, much more are revealed in this magnificent work.

Bogle's critiquing of the movies, television shows, actors and their performances is balanced and insightful. His analysis skillfully takes into consideration the racist nature of the motion picture business throughout the early years of America cinema, never sugarcoating or condemning the industry. His assessments are intelligently delivered and masterfully compliment the commentary and photographs throughout.

Published in 1988, this book is a bit dated. However, the historical value of its contents is invaluable. There are numerous photos and profiles of long-ago African-American movie stars, including Lena Horne, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Dorothy Dandridge, Ethel Waters, Paul Robeson, Hattie McDaniel and Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas, as well as lesser-known artists such as Rex Ingram, Tim Moore, Lillian and Amanda Randolph and Mantan Moreland.

Bogle also critiques numerous television shows that featured or starred African-American performers, including "Benson", "Amos `n' Andy", "Room 222", "The Cosby Show", "I Spy", "Julia", "Amen" and even the short-lived, "Get Christie Love".

Fortunately, Bogle does not exclude more contemporary (remember, this book was written in 1988) African-American performers. Eddie Murphy, Richard Roundtree, Alfre Woodard, Diana Ross, Melvin Van Peebles and others are also profiled.

This is a very enjoyable, easy to read text. A complimentary addition to any library.
Oh, and by the way...the first African-American to portray "God" in a motion picture was Rex Ingram in the 1936 classic: "Green Pastures".

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book on Black film and television.......1999-04-14

Donald Bogle does an excellent job listing every movie and television program that featured Black people in a prominent role. I read the book like a novel. This book is a fabulous research tool. A must have!!!!

This encyclopedia is the ideal source for understanding today's controversies in a historical context. It offers something for everyone, covering social, legal, medical, science, business, and international issues. The A-Z format offers nearly 600 entries (400-800 words each), plus charts, tables, a list of selected topics, and more than 70 photographs. 4 out of 5 stars Good source material on many subjects.......2002-07-10

As one reviewer said, but more vociferously, this encyclopedia covers more Anti-tobacco issues than tobacco issues. It might more properly be entitled A Bibliography of Anti-Tobacco Personalities and Literature. There are some good articles on smoking, cigarettes and tobacco per se, but most deal with the personalities and issues of the tobacco wars.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource.......2002-05-30

I was somewhat dismayed when I read the other reviews as well. I have to admit that I am a former smoker myself, but did not find this book as "biased" as some have indicated. I am a librarian by profession and find this an invaluable resource when I have people who are writing research papers. It is chock full of information and very well organized. Certainly, up-to-date topics and statistics are - because of the fact that this is a book and not because of the author - not present. What is found though, are easy to read articles, photographs and a plethora of information that give one an overview on the many aspects of the tobacco industry. I reccomend this book highly and wish the author would update the volume.

          4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2001-10-03

Looking at the last review, I was somewhat dismayed. Obviously there is a bias present on the part of the reviewer. This is a very coomprehensive resource that provides information not only on tobacco but on persons involved, companies and historical events. I recommend it and also advise a potential buyer to exam the professional reviews that can be found right after the summary. Thank you, have a good day.

          1 out of 5 stars WARNING! Crippling anti-smoking bias!.......2000-04-20

Despite the prim "research volume"-type title, this is nothing more than an extensive anti-smoking screed with a scattering of simplistic information about tobacco and smoking. This severe bias unfortunately renders the book almost utterly worthless, and those looking for factual, unbiased, and useful information about smoking and tobacco are recommended to search for a copy of the out-of-print Tobacco Encyclopedia by Voges.
