This is a superb text for all helping professionals........1999-01-04
I used an earlier edition of this text during my own doctoral training. That it has been revised and updated speaks to its excellence as a comprehensive text covering all aspects of aging and mental health. I will be using this text in my counseling classes because it is chock full of useful information, (practical, medical, and psychological,) and emphasizes " the dignity and worth of each individual irrespective of age." Professional counselors, psychologists, and all those who work with aging adults need to read this book and keep it as a ready reference. As the population ages we need to understand the special needs and attributes of older adults, as well as how aging is viewed in a diverse society.
Book Description
Although very little can be done to alter the course of dementia, much can be done to maximize the quality of life of people with the condition. Research as well as practical experience suggest that behavior management, especially through programs that provide meaningful and constructive activity, is currently the most effective treatment.
In Keeping Busy, James Dowling describes a variety of activities designed to bring meaning and enjoyment to the lives of persons with dementia. The activities are organized by general categories such as music, exercise, horticulture, pets, humor, and social events. The largest section deals with communication and includes word games that help people strengthen their remaining verbal skills. The description of each activity includes step-by-step instructions, as well as tips on how to adapt it for small or large groups, for individuals at home or in an organization, or people who are bedridden.

Activities for People with Dementia.......2007-01-11
A 'must-have' for all Recreation Departments in the Geriatric Care settings.
Many Useful Ideas Discussed.......2006-12-09
Even though this book is over ten years old, many of the ideas for activities suggested are extremely helpful in engaging a person with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. I especially like using the trivia questions
by Susan Berg author of "Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Meaningful Mind Stimulating, Activities and More for the Memory Challenged, Their Loved Ones and Involved Professionals"
age-appropriate especially for elderly, or any brain injured person.......2006-11-23
Because of the many phrases, songs, games that refer to things anyone born from 1910 to 1950 might remember, it was exceedingly fun and appropriate to go through things with my TBI husband. We laughed and said, Have to sing that for our grandchildren" and reminded each other of the answers. I could see the author's view of older people not wanting to do, say, art, then speaking of their brother who painted, and gradually having a wonderful time. I had occasion to refer this book to someone whose mother was just diagnosed, and I did so enthusiastically. Makes me wonder what the dementia patients who were born past the 70s will have that's as much fun as these old songs and cliches. The trick is to play WITH the patients and listen to their resulting stories--don't just throw the book their direction.
Comforting & Practicle Info.......2006-07-06
After checking this book from the library, I purchsed a copy as a reference. The author gives practicle activities which enable the caregiver and the patient to survive dementia with dignity.
Other writings are more scientific and testimonial; This book gets us off our duff!
Not helpful if you're looking for practical activity ideas.......2004-07-04
I'm an occupational therapist looking for specific ideas for activities that will interest dementia patients who can't participate in bingo and the other activities offered by a poorly run activities program in a typical nursing home. The dementia unit described in this book sounds wonderful, but not easily found in a long term care setting. Once again, I've found a book with great ideas that are impossible to carry out in the real world of long term care.

Book Description
While elder abuse is a topic that has been widely explored, elder self-neglect is a subject that has not really been defined, much less discussed at any length. This volume is the first comprehensive work on the prevalent geriatric problem of self-neglect. It contains original clinical research and analyzes the medical, psychological, and social aspects of geriatric self-neglect from various perspectives of professionals within the geriatric field. This volume opens with an overview of elder self-neglect, including a general framework that describes exactly what is involved with this clinical problem. The authors then explore the broad societal implications of self-neglect before going on to examine special risks and subgroups that are associated with this dilemma. The final chapter investigates areas of research likely to enhance further understanding of this problem. Social workers, nurses and geriatric professionals who are concerned with this threat to our elderly will find this volume to be a valuable resource that provides an interdisciplinary perspective on health and social services.
Book Description
This book provides an overview of the elderly population who have developmental disabilities. It attempts to assess their needs and their lives as they age. In many ways, this is a pioneer population, one of the first generations of persons with developmental disabilities who have survived into later life. As this population of persons with developmental disabilities ages, new challenges will emerge for specialists and educators both in the areas of gerontology and developmental disabilities. Programs designed for mid-life persons with developmental disabilities will have to be modified to serve older adults. Senior services, too, will have to incorporate the needs of this unique population into their own plans and programs.
This book seeks to facilitate that task. It is based on our personal experience in the fields of gerontology and developmental disabilities, and the research of colleagues in both fields. Most importantly, interviews with older adults with developmental disabilities provide a powerful glimpse into their lives and needs as they face old age. We begin with a brief introduction to this population, as well as a review of the reasons why older persons with developmental disabilities have now been identified as a group in need of new services, programs, and initiatives. Subsequent chapters explore the particular characteristics and implications of developmental disabilities.
Later chapters review the manner in which persons with developmental disabilities are affected physically, psychologically, and socially as they age. For as they age, all adults encounter change both in themselves as well as in the circumstances of their lives.
We then explore the crises and transitions that older persons with developmental disabilities face, focusing on their coping strengths and limitations, as well as the supportive services that they now utilize and will need in the future. This leads naturally into a discussion of the policy implications posed by this growing population: Which systems can best provide support? What policies and services are needed? How can parents, siblings and other caregivers plan and help?
We end with an examination of how best to meet the mental health needs of this group that faces the double jeopardy of developmental disabilities and old age.

Book Description
This volume presents the foundational knowledge and skills that mental health practitioners need to meet the growing needs of our aging population. Thorough coverage is provided of normal aging processes and their effects on intellectual functioning, memory, personality, and other areas. Common psychological problems are discussed, and a comprehensive framework for evaluation and treatment is delineated. Outlining helpful concepts and approaches to guide psychotherapeutic work with this population, the book describes ways to coordinate psychological interventions with psychiatric treatment and supportive services. A special section is devoted to working with families on alleviating caregiver stress, simplifying the senior's living environment, and weighing difficult decisions about the level of assistance a loved one may need. Other topics covered include working as a consultant in nursing homes and dealing with ethical questions around confidentiality and end-of-life issues. An essential resource for clinicians, this book also serves as a text for courses in psychology and aging, gerontology, and geriatric psychology.
Customer Reviews:
A helpful reference for teachers and families.......2001-11-19
This book provides helpful insight into the mental disorders that afflict many elderly people. This can be useful to both educators and family members who are concerned about mental illness affecting the elderly. Teachers and professors can use this to help prepare family studies and human development students for problems that they may encounter in their work. Furthmore, families that are dealing with aging parents or loved ones can use this book to help understand what is going on and how to deal with them in a caring way. This book provides excellent case examples and analysis and I would reccomend it to anyone with an interest or connection in the field.
THE GREATEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN!!!.......1999-02-15
This may be the finest book I've ever read. It really let's the common person learn about that entity known as "old people". Who would have thought that they were just like us normal folk?!
Product Description
Because limited training in geriatric psychiatry has tended to give insufficient attention to mental health care for the elderly, clinicians often need help when assessing and treating problems specific to older clients. Clinical Manual of Geriatric Psychiatry provides a single-volume reference that covers the full range of such problems, from depression to dementia. It shows that psychiatrists working with older people must sometimes be willing to play a generalist's role, combining routine medical management with psychiatric interventions or helping with social or situational problems.
Drs. Spar and La Rue review the effects of aging on cognitive performance, including clinical presentations of memory loss and medication-induced symptoms of mental disorder. They offer practical guidance to help the clinician not only diagnose and treat these conditions but also address such issues as evaluating competency for informed consent. Enhanced by numerous charts and tables for easy reference, the book boasts a broad range of coverage:
- Guidelines to differential diagnosis of depressionlaboratory tests, psychological tests, and symptom rating scalesalong with insights on new directions in psychotherapy, including intervention within primary care.
- Assessment of both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and non-SSRIs as first-line agents for depression, citing advantages and disadvantages of specific drugs, plus advice on switching or combining antidepressants.
- Discussion of the effective use of electroconvulsive therapyparticularly the use of brief-pulse, bilateral electrode placementas well as experimental therapies such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and vagal nerve stimulation.
- Guidance in cognitive mental status examinations and brief screening tools for dementia and Alzheimer's disease, focusing on the Mini-Mental State Exam and summarizing advanced and experimental diagnostics such as single photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography.
- Appraisal of psychosocial therapies for patients with Alzheimer's Disease, such as behavior modification and reminiscence therapy, plus use of cholinesterase inhibitors for treatment of cognitive deficits.
- Review of approaches to anxiety disorders, including differential diagnosis of phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder, with a focus on psychosocial-behavior therapy and medications of choice.
With life expectancies increasing, people over 85 already constitute one of the fastest growing demographicsand the number of older people with mental disorders is rising as well. Clinical Manual of Geriatric Psychiatry explains how working effectively with older adults requires a blending of specialized knowledge with a flexible approach to the patientand shows how to bring that about in daily practice.
Book Description
With the graying of America the challenges facing mental health professionals are daunting indeed. Over 28 million Americans are now over 60 and their ranks are expected to swell as the baby boomers age. Many of them will require long-term care. Therapists will need in-depth, practical information about the unique psychological needs of older adults in long-term care settings. Professional Psychology of Long Term Care is the first book to provide therapists with the tools and skill sets they'll need to face the challenge of this demographic inevitability. Contributors to this groundbreaking work include Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D, A.B.P.P., Joseph M. Casciani, Ph.D. and many other noted geropsychologists. In addition to valuable therapeutic strategies and practical insights, psychologists and mental health counselors can use this book to earn continuing education credits.
Customer Reviews:
A solid book on psychology in long term Care........2001-02-09
A very readable and useful book on taking care of the psychological needs of residents and staff members in a long term care setting. The writers (different sections are written by different writers) really know about long term care facilities and offer many useful suggestions for working with the residents and meeting their psychological needs. I would recommend this book to anyone working in long term care in a clinical or mental health capacity.
I really learned from this book.......2000-11-16
As a professional already working with the geriatric population, I was unsure about the usefulness of this book. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It reminded me of many issues in LTC that I tend to forget from day to day, as well as taught me a few new bits of information is well. It is certainly conveniently organized, with specific chapters for individual issues. Recommended!
