Book Description
Dominic Kelly analyzes Japanese policies designed to lead to the reconstruction of East Asia. He presents a detailed picture of Japanese activity in East Asia in the areas of production, finance, security, and knowledge, and maps out the historical context upon which this activity rests. Kelly sheds light on the increasingly powerful but imperfectly understood phenomenon of regionalism. He goes on to identity the major fault line situated beneath both theoretical accounts of Japanese regionalism and "real world" predictions of its success or failure.

Book Description
Ellsworth Kelly's oeuvre can perhaps best be summed up by a phrase from Gottfried Boehm: "In between: this is the shortest formula of his aesthetics." With abstract expressionism at its peak, and based on the traditions of the abstract avant-garde in dialogue with color field painting, Kelly developed a vocabulary that left panel painting behind. In a conscious questioning of the conditions that underlie perception, he not only explores the relationships of painting and wall, sculpture and space, but also, and in particular, the relationship between viewer and work. A selection of more than 40 pieces of art from the past five decades, most of them from the collection of the artist, this book offers an expert investigation into the artistic development of one of the leading exponents of international postwar art.

Best book for Craft History.......2007-08-27
Aidan's book is most important for the history of Witchcraft. Its debunkers can be seen for what they are: ignorant and unable to cope with the real roots of their professed religion. The fact that they believe Gardner created/brought back "Wicca" instead of Witchcraft shows how little they understand the real Craft. Gardner did not write "Wicca Today." Crafting the Art of Magic is a scholarly work that anybody interested in Craft history should read.
Poor Scholarship.......2006-02-23
This book has more assumption than it does research that has been proven false. See Don Frew's Critical Review here:

Llewellyn! Please bring this back into print!.......2005-08-13
Llewellyn publishes something good in the early 90's an it never comes back, while tripe gets republished over and over.....
Anyway, "Crafting the Art of Magic" is a must for anyone interested in the history of Wicca. Okay, so we all know the usual story--Wicca is 50,000 years old, Wicca is from an unbroken line of English witches, Wicca is blah, blah. Kelly actually goes back to primary sources, picks them over and shows his work. It's not infallible, of course--he puts more faith in a few of his theories than proof--but it's an honest effort and a worthwhile read if you can snag a copy.
A pretty good history of the modern Craft revival.......2003-04-30
Kelly's book is a pretty well researched history of neo-pagan Gardnerian witchcraft. He documents and discusses Gerald Gardner's creation of Wicca in the 1950s. The contributions of several other people are also credited. The one drawback is that he blurs all his data to support his premise that Gardner (and friends) invented the Wicca as a whole new religion. Kelly hypothesizes that Gardner, Dorothy Clutterbuck, and some other friends formed their first coven in 1939 as a new creation. He insists that there was no prior witchcraft from which they drew workings, beliefs, morality or rituals. Every part of Gardnerian Wicca documents that do not appear to have come from an identifiable source he credits to Gardner himself. Overlooks the fact that there was a witch museum before Gardner took it over. The reader may be tempted to ask, if Gardner invented it all what was in the museum before Gardner? Kelly stretches logic to deny possible connections to prior magical or pagan sources. If you want a book on the development and progression of Gardnerian Wicca during the 1950s, this is a good source. If you're looking for hard evidence about Gardner's sources and prior connections this is probably not your book.
An unfortunate beginning to a history of Wicca.......2001-08-18
Kelly's work has perhaps one useful function; as a test of an ability to read critically. Further critique beyond that provided by Frew is probably unnecessary; his detailed examination of Kelly's errors in logic, the unnecessary anti-Catholic commentary and lack of familiarity with academic standards are clear and concise. These points added to the mysteriously-disappearing "Weschcke documents" that Kelly uses as his source material make this an inauspicious beginning to a textual examination of a new religious movement. Fortunately the work by Heselton and Hutton demonstrates that there is room to expand the inquiry into historical research.
Book Description
In 1961, only a few weeks after Alan Shepherd completed the first American suborbital flight, President John F. Kennedy announced that the U.S. would put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. The next year, NASA awarded the right to meet the extraordinary challenge of building a lunar excursion module to a small airplane company called Grumman from Long Island, New York. Chief engineer Thomas J. Kelly gives a first-hand account of designing, building, testing, and flying the Apollo lunar module. It was, he writes, "and aerospace engineer's dream job of the century." Kelly's account begins with the imaginative process of sketching solutions to a host of technical challenges with an emphasis on safety, reliability, and maintainability. He catalogs numerous test failures, including propulsion-system leaks, ascent-engine instability, stress corrosion of the aluminum allow parts, and battery problems, as well as their fixes under the ever-present constraints of budget and schedule. He also recaptures the anticipation of the first unmanned lunar module flight with Apollo 5 in 1968, the exhilaration of hearing Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong report that "The Eagle has Landed," and the pride of having inadvertently provided a vital "lifeboat" for the crew of the disabled Apollo 13.
Customer Reviews:
What cool engineering !.......2007-05-13
I was a little kid when the moon landings occurred and they have infected my imagination ever since. During the 1980's the moon landings seemed to be all but forgotten and useful information about the space craft, the methods and stories of detail simply did not exist. Recently we've seen a resurgence of interest and a host of great books about Apollo, but this one stands out. The author (the chief design engneer of the lunar module) writes well, with the clear style of a design engineer who has had to produce public reports and make complex information clear. He also includes the human side and illustrates the often arrogant and obsessive personalities involved in the Apollo programme. But what a machine they built ! What difficulties encountered trying to design and build a craft to land humans on the moon within about 8 years. The technologies and materials were not as we know them now and this makes the story all the more impressive. Every LM (lunar module) worked as designed while on the missions and so much could have gone wrong. The author describes from his experience, the emotional trade-off between the colossal task at hand and the dream of absolute achievement. I really enjoyed this book.
Moon Lander.......2007-03-08
An excellent book. A behind-the-scenes look at the tremendous effort involved in designing and building the lunar module. This should be required reading for engineering students.
A Hardcore Insight.......2005-05-25
I got interested in this book after I watched the DVD series "From Earth To Moon", which I still consider on of the best DVD series ever published about anything. This book represents DVD #2, Part 5 in this series, with much more meat and gore that you could possibly take. The book is written by Thomas Kelly, Chief Engineer of Lunar Module (the thing which landed on Moon) itself. I would highly recommend watching the DVD first before you start on the book so you have perspective and appreciation about what the author is talking about. While the book is written in personal style rather then a dull document, it isn't written like a "murder mystery novel" which makes you to sit through and read it in one pass. It often gets dry with details, sometime without much explanation of technical terms or relevance. Also note that this book represents only a part of Moon mission, i.e., the LM module. The book serves as nice document but might fail to gain your interest unless you were a nerd who dreamed about working for NASA all your life ;). If you weren't this type or don't have a time to read it, check out the DVD set!
Outstanding, but somewhat technical..........2005-03-11
This book really gets into the nitty gritty of what it took to build the Lunar Lander(LEM) for the Apollo moon landing missions. Thomas Kelly (the author) and the folks at Grumman had an extremely difficult task to build the LEM from scratch, and the difficulties inherent in their mission show in the book. Everytime I read a book about the Apollo program, I am always astounded that the US actually managed to get to the moon, considering the technological limitations of the 1960's. This book was a joy to read, but you will find yourself going to the index at times to look up the meanings of many of the technical acronyms. Highly recommended!
Excellent book for managers.......2004-11-11
This was a great book and a quick read! It is detailed, to be sure, but will capture and maintain the interest of anyone who wants to know on how the lunar module came into being. And, I would definitely recommend it to any manager--especially in high-tech engineering organizations--who wants to see how a young engineer learned to organize and manage a huge, multi-year, multi-million dollar, bleeding-edge technology program.
Customer Reviews:
The one!.......2000-04-16
My physicain at the Mayo Clinic recommended this book to me as "the Gold Standard" for nutrition lifestyle and weight control.
You want it!
Most excellent, however, "The Learn Program for Weight Management 2000" has now been released. (As has new casette tapes)
VERY GOOD!.......1999-05-07
This book breaks weight management down to 16 easy to follow lessons. It takes a light approach to issues like dealing with family, and special occasions. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a long-term approach to weight loss.
The book covers the reasons dieting seldom works........1998-09-14
If you can accept reality and are intrested in a long term comitment this is a book that will help you achieve a healthy life style.

America's Amish Country II (Revisiting America's Amish Country) is a complete photo documentation of the Amish Lifestyle in most of the settlements in the US and Canada and their European history before moving to the US. 376 full color photographs, 144 pages, full color dustjacket
Customer Reviews:
Hard to pinpoint........2001-04-26
While some of the photography was beautiful, there were a couple of things that I disliked about the book.
The first was the fact that I felt like I was intruding. It didn't seem that the people photographed had always consented. [Many Amish do not like to have their photographs taken, because of a Biblical passage.] Some of them seemed like they had allowed the photographer in, but in some photos I just couldn't help feeling that something wasn't right.
The second was the layout. I thought the book was very poorly layed out and could have been much more effective if it had been properly laid out. There is a lot of interesting information held within the pages of this book, if you know where to look. [It is difficult to find captions for pictures, etc.]
It is, however, an informative guide to the Amish.
Showcases a very special way of life in America.......2001-02-20
America's Amish Country II is a beautifully photographed, survey of Amish areas spread out through twenty-two states and Ontario, Canada. Each of the 376 full color photographs depict some aspect of the Amish way of life including close knit families, self reliance, strong work values, barn raising, threshing rings, field plowing, hog butchering, deer hunting, pea shelling, clothes washing, vegetable garden work, young scholars, youth group activities, fishing, family picnics, sports, baseball, volleyball, horse shoe pitching, ice skating, and more. Leslie Kelly's text and captions serve to enhance Doyle Yoder's spectacular photography. America's Amish Country II is a splendid, highly recommended example of a photo essay volume showcasing a very special way of life in America.

Book Description
Few conventions were left unchallenged in the 1970s as Americans witnessed a decade of sweeping social, cultural, economic, and political upheavals. The fresh anguish of the Vietnam War, the disillusionment of Watergate, the recession, and the oil embargo all contributed to an era of social movements, political mistrust, and not surprisingly, rich cultural diversity. It was the "Me Decade," a reaction against 60s radicalism reflected in fashion, film, the arts, and music. Songs of the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and Patti Smith brought the aggressive punk-rock music into the mainstream, introducing teenagers to rebellious punk fashions. It was also the decade of disco: Who can forget the image of John Travolta as Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever decked out in a three-piece white leisure suit with his shirt collar open, his hand points towards the heavens as the lighted disco floor glares defiantly below him? While the turbulent decade ushered in Ms. magazine, Mood rings, Studio 54, Stephen King horror novels, and granola, it was also the decade in which over 25 million video game systems made their way into our homes, allowing Asteroids and Pac-Man games to be played out on televisions in living rooms throughout the country. Whether it was the boom of environmentalism or the bust of the Nixon administration and public life as we knew it, the era represented a profound shift in American society and culture. This compelling book chronicles the significant changes in our country during the 70s, from the women's and civil rights movements to the energy crisis. Chapters explore various aspects of popular culture, including advertising, literature, leisure activities, visual arts, and travel. Supplemental resources include a timeline of important events, cost comparisons, and an extensive bibliography for further reading.

Book Description
Oil makes up one-third of Venezuela's entire GDP, and the United States is far and away Venezuela's largest trading partner. Relations between Venezuela and the United States, traditionally close for most of the last two centuries, began to fray in the last decade as the end of the Cold War altered the international environment. The United States and Venezuela attempts to place the events of the past ten years in historical perspective and to explain the reasons why the changes occurred. It also examines the impact of new actors on the international scene: drug traffickers, common citizens, human rights and environmental activists and the media.
