Excellent resume resource for those without a clue.......2007-08-25
This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume. Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.
Good Value.......2002-07-17
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen
Boring and a waste of time!.......2000-04-25
I bought this book based on all of the favorable review's and was greatly disappointed. As a recent college graduate in the humanities, I found it to be a big waste of time and money! If you are not interested in finding a job, buy this book!
Good Pick.......1999-12-28
My wife got me this book for Christmas through Amazon.com to follow up with my New Year's resolution to look for new opportunities in healthcare. This book is pretty good - it has a lot of varying kinds of resumes and good tips for overall job search, interviewing, and networking.

ITS A PLACE TO START.......2007-01-19
IF YOU HAVE ZERO IDEAS FOR WHAT, HOW,AND WHEN, ITS ALRIGHT.IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE SOME HOMEWORK FOR A WHILE SKIP IT.
Practical Wisdom.......2005-08-02
There is a great deal of wisdom in this book by Mary Helen and Shuford Smith. The Smiths cover the practical aspects of retirement as well. The Smiths retired early - ages 39 and 43. They consider their retirement lives extremely rich and provide this guide to fill in a gap that they see in retirement literature. They aren't afraid to tackle issues that many other retirement books don't address, such as the reality of death and sexual changes, while covering the practical aspects of retirement as well.
The construct of the book is in the form of 101 brief essays grouped together in eight categories. The first category, "Make Successful Transitions," is one of the critical sections that make this book stand out. The Smiths discuss the importance of developing a philosophy for life during your retirement years. Many recent retirement books talk about finding jobs, volunteering, travel and relationships, but few acknowledge that we must come to grips with the realities of aging and defining our purpose on earth - our reason for "being," rather than "doing." The Smiths replay this theme throughout the remainder of the book.
If I have one gripe with the book, it's the style of writing. The Smiths have chosen to write in the first person plural ("we," "our"). This can begin to grate if the reader chooses to read from cover to cover, because it begins to sound like a royal "we." Because of this, I recommend reading the book in short bursts, dipping into different essays as appropriate.
In spite of this shortcoming, 101 Secrets for a Great Retirement belongs on the bookshelf of everyone approaching retirement.
common sense, not "secrets".......2005-06-30
I bought this book thinking that the "secrets" therein would enlighten me as to things we might be missing in our planning for retirement. The other reviewers on this site made it sound like the book would have advice on little-known health care deals, finding a good place to live, etc. Instead, it is filled with common sense tips, such as "enjoy sex" and "learn to forgive." Gee, thanks. This might be a good book if you're retired and bored, but don't buy this looking for much more.
Great book for those facing retirement in a few years.......2003-12-31
This is a much more practical book than some of the "100 things you can do when retired" books that suggest babysitting, dogwalking or other simplistic ideas. Mary Helen Smith lists 101 things you should think about or do, like consider what is "quality of life"--for example, downsizing your house versus staying in an expensive piece of real estate, and listing government programs for retirees, something you may not know about. In addition, she stresses understanding about money. Once you are on a fixed income, and one that is possibly lower than your salary, you must deal with money in a different manner. Now is the time to learn about finances and money, not after you've gotten your first social security check. With many millions of people hitting retirement or near-retirement age from the Baby Boom, this is a really good starting-off point to plan out your coming retirement years. Highly recommended.
Practical inspiration.......2000-11-23
I'm impressed by how much information is packed into the conversational style of this book. An abundance of practical information is available without it feeling tedious. Your approach is positive, encouraging, and realistic. Maslow and intuition are acknowledged. Caring ways to honor yourself and others are gently and directly suggested. Thank you for writing a helpful book that will positively affect the lives of those who read it.

These classroom-tested games, exercises and activities add spark and energy to your training sessions and help adults really learn without even knowing it. Included are games for improving communication skills, developing conflict resolution skills, breaking the ice, creating team players, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource.......2003-03-17
I have used several of these games with great success. Most are intelligent and fun, unlike several other books I have read. The organization of the book is a little odd but that's only a minor complaint. It's still fairly easy to find what I'm looking for.
Very Good but needs some re-organization.......2002-02-10
A small book that is very popular among trainers. The Games and activities are chosen from the Creative Training Techniques Newsletter (By Bob Pike) and are suitable for a variety of topics and situations. The activities are very eclectic and many are unique since they are contributed by different people. The presentation is also very clear. However, the one thing that the book lacks is a topical index so that you can check the type of the activity and its suitability to different training topics and areas: You have to go through the whole book looking for the icebreakers, the activities, etc. and the areas that they suitable for.
A lot of Prep Time is Needed!.......2000-11-02
I came across this book while buying another one at Amazon. I've always followed Bob Pike so I bought this book unseen.
The book is laid out nice so all you have to do is pick a game and follow the brief instructions. There is one game per page so that tells you that it's not difficult to follow.
The one thing I didn't like about this book is that you really have to plan on a lot of time to prepare for each game way before the class. Some of the games, each participant needs a specialized tool or article such as a photo, paper cups, toothpicks, candy bars, etc.
Also some of the more detailed games require you as the trainer to do a lot of advance prep for items such as a paper license plate, index cards, lists of objects, cartoons, nickels, and lottery tickets. Once you have any of these items prepared, then the game is fun....but I found that I don't have a lot of extra time to prepare items such as these for large classes.
Nutshell: Easy Instructions, Great Games, Tons of Advance Prep Work Needed (for most games).
101 Games For Trainers.......2000-09-06
While looking for a variety of training games I came across this book. What I like about this book is that it offers a variety of games for different situations. Whether looking for an opener or a team-building event, I can find an activity to go with a multitude of topics. It's often difficult to come up with enough activities to go with your presentation. I like this book because it had so many options for me to choose from without using the same one over and over again.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful for the cover letter 'rookie'.......2007-01-26
101 Best Cover Letters is a good buy if you are struggling with putting together just the right words for a great cover letter. Gives some "common sense" tips, but also a variety of styles (i.e. responding to classified ad, how to incorporate a reference, specific careers) for your letter. Obviously you still have to make your cover leter your own, but this book definitely helps get the wheels turning.
101 Flattering cover letters for sycophants.......2006-06-16
The example letters are uniformly dreadful. Marginal grammar and usage combine with a sacherine style aimed at kissing up to second-raters. These letters are guaranteed to repell anyone with whom one would really like to work.
GREAT Book, BUT NOT in Digital Format.......2004-02-12
Great examples of cover letters with explanation of what makes them great, but I only know this because I bought the printed version after not being able to read the examples AT ALL in the downloaded digital version. I even tried reading on a 19" high resolution monitor using the PC version of Microsoft Reader, .
The problem is that even though Microsoft Reader allows one to change the fonts of the print to suit the reader, scanned images like ALL the cover letter examples are not scalable, so it is impossible to distinguish an e from an o, l from an i, and so on.
Amazon should not sell books with graphics and fixed images in digital format, or at least should warn customers of the issue before they pay to download a book in digital format that has over 70% in unscalable, unreadable format.
GREAT FOR THE NEWBIES or EXPERTS OUT THERE!.......2003-06-08
This book was a great investment! The cover letters give you examples to use in your own letter and show you the strengths found in each cover. I actually took a highlighter to this book and highlighted my favorite lines and ideas out of certain letters. I then implemented them into my letter. Great for everyone, the professional or the inexperienced. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!
I was very disappointed with this purchase........2002-08-28
I was very disappointed with this purchase. The only subject the letters cover is for use in getting a job. If I had known that it was strictly targeting getting a job I would have never purchased this. I was looking for a book that had a variety of letters you would find useful in the business world, not getting a job.

Customer Reviews:
try selling used books on Amazon.......2007-07-08
Some of the ideas mentioned seem like more work than a traditionl job and some are too artsy craftsy for me, but women today do have more options than ever before. With the introduction of the internet, we are no longer doomed to sell vitamins to friends, dream about life on top of a pyramid, or set up childcare services in our home, if we're already stretched too thin with our own motherly duties. I wrote a book about selling books n Amazon: 'The Stay-at-Home Moms Secret Guide,' because it is one of the lowest risk, lowest investment, profitble ideas that I have come across. Who would have thought it possible to tap into the biggest book bazaar in the world, reaching across the globe, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, from your own home. Sorry to take this opportunity to plug my own idea, but, if you want a real opportunity to make extra-cash (I make $4,000 a month working part-time), I think I've found one of the best ideas available. Scouting for used books is fun! But, if selling used books isn't for you, you might find somethig in Priscilla Huff's book. Just don't give up. I tried a few other options before finding one that really brought in the money I need--there's something out there that's rght for you too.

Home Business.......2007-02-06
Lots of great information in this book. If you are interested in starting a home business this book really helps you put things together.
A Good First Step .......2006-12-12
I conduct workshops based on my book "Capitalizing On Being Woman Owned" and in almost every class 30% of the attendees are in the first stages of starting a business or even just thinking about it. This book would be a good exploratory resource for them. Ms. Huff provides practical information for many micro-businesses. Part of the book is a "how-to" with explanations for making critical decisions. It is a great first exposure to starting a business and provides resources that will give the details. It's probably not for the woman who wants to build an international corporation. But it is for the woman who wants to start a small business that suits her personality and situation.
Not a book for the 21st century.......2006-05-08
I think that Ms Huff should rethink her strategies here.
This book is okay but does not really deal with the realities of the 21st century.
If you're looking for a book that faces the realities and challenges of today then you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book shows you how to find those businesses that can survive and prosper in our economy. It's a book that pays special attentions to the needs and goals of women.
Great Career Change or Second Income Home Business Ideas.......2006-03-21
You may want a home business for a second income, or maybe a whole career change - there are thousands of options for earning a living now. I started homebusinessadvisers.com in 2004, and this is a book I read in preparation. It was useful for an over 40 woman like me. There is so much info around, it's hard to filter through it. In the end my own website has become a place to review the latest home based business ideas. Thanks to Priscilla for the initial ideas.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for ideas, good insight to businesses.......2007-04-10
This book has some great summaries, about 6 pages in length each for a variety of businesses. Discussions center around best-case scenarios and the author offers bits of interviews from those successful owners and how you can apply it to starting your business. A suprisingly realistic view of quite a few different business options.
I really would like to see an updated version of this book since it was published in 2000 and the market has changed for many small businesses.
New edition fully updated.......2000-10-20
I saw that the first two reviews listed here are for the old edition of this book! The new edition, just released last month, is completely updated. Here are just some examples covering virtually every established and emerging field, including the Internet: Internet marketing, designing web pages, ecotourism, gourmet food shop or producer, take-out restaurateur, adult day services provider, play gym operator, home health care provider, personal chef, dating service provider, B&B innkeeper, craft wholesaler, "whodunit" producer, party planner, and the list goes on and on. Each entry gives a complete behind the scenes look and relays success stories from real entrepreneurs, with verbatim comments and must-know secrets about every aspect of running the business. The introductory chapter gives you all the nuts and bolts information about how to succeed as an entrepreneur with topics like the positive character traits of entrepreneurs, and info about generating capital, business plans, finding lawyers and bookkeepers and bankers, marketing, working from home, finding and keeping employees, and more.
Published in 1992, this book is outdated........1998-12-18
While the author has some good ideas for start-up businesses, she is behind the times. Keep in mind it was most recently published 6 years ago. Read it to get ideas, but don't count on it to reflect current trends. According to the author, typing, word processing, old school computer languages, and pagers are all in hot demand.
good contents.......1998-11-03
lots of fresh item

Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed it!.......2001-08-18
If you're a person who's been searching online for a "real" home based business this is the book for you. I was delightfully surprised to see some of the idea's I've had rolling around in my head on paper. It's a totally different experience to take the book with you and read it as opposed to looking at a computer screen.
One suggestion I've never seen before was to have your own art gallery in a room in your home. Of course if your home looks like Martha Stewart's that's no problem. The author suggests signing the artists to contracts so that you both make money when the art sells. I think that's a wonderful idea. Of course if you're not really keen on the idea of having strangers tour your back bedroom you could rent a small office space and advertise, advertise, advertise.
Another idea I really loved was running a doggie day care center!! To those who are strictly business minded these ideas may sound far fetched but to those of us who long to break out of the mold these ideas light a fire to our creativity. One more business suggestion I thought was interesting is the laundry service. Even if you don't have a washer and dryer you could pick up people's laundry and drive it to the laundrymat. I know I've tried to bribe people to do my own laundry!!
All in all this book is a worth while read.
Great Practical Book!.......2001-08-18
I think this is a great book!! Another reviewer said that the Bison breeding wasn't very feasible. On my country bike rides I pass a house that has bison. I never could figure out why they had them? Now I know.
Many of these suggestions you will see listed online but there's something about being able to hold the book in your hands and dream about all of the wonderful things you could do. You can dream small or large. For example if you have an extra room in your home or an outside attached room you could contact artist's and sell their work on commission from your own gallery. I really like that idea.
If you've always dreamed about being your own boss while staying at home this is the book for you. Start slow and steady. Just take on what you can handle. Do you have a washing machine and dryer? You could wash people's laundry. I'd never thought of that idea but I know in India this is quite common. I don't want to give away too many ideas. I just love this book. When I first got it I thought this would be one of those books I look at and decide to auction off. Nope. This one's a keeper!
I really loved that you don't have to have advanced degrees to go into business for yourself. Don't let people discourage you from earning a decent income on your own using your own brain power.
It's okay...but has a limited audience.......2000-06-10
This book really starts out good, it has a lot of very informative info. With topics like "A Strategy for Success" and "Franchises, Distributorships, MLMs and Other Home Business Opportunities" you can find a lot of useful information. Ms. Huff explains the business process, as well as all the legalities surrounding small-businesses. That's the first part of the book.
The second part of the book is all the jobs, yes, all 101 of them, and their descriptions. She includes very useful info like start-up costs, estimated income, things needed to run the business, and where to get more information.
My only complaint with this book is that it covers a broad amount of job areas and not that well. There are jobs that she left out and those that weren't explained very well, and some that weren't even useful.
This book is not going to help you figure out what your interests are and what is the perfect home-based business. If you have a little interest in just about everything from arts and crafts to computers, and want to know what you can do with your talents, then you may want to pick this up in the library.
It's a good reference guide, and really, that's ALL it is. I don't regret that I bought the book, I just wish I knew what I was buying before I set such high expectations.
What a cool book.......1998-10-16
This is a really interesting book, although some of the businesses are kind of far-fetched (bison breeder???) but the ideas are cool. I would reccomend this more as a guide to side careers, most of them are risky or take a lot of time to get off the ground. Also most of them seem to be based around larger cities' needs.
