3 out of 5 stars Good writing tips but not applicable to dynamic workplace.......2007-03-13

Some of the basic writing tips regarding word choice, sentence length, reading level, and formatting are great. The rest might apply if your company has never documented its policies and procedures before or if you work in a static workplace (government office?) where policies or procedures are added or changed only a couple of times a year (do people really still print these on paper?) However, if you work at a dynamic, constantly changing company that must respond to thousands of different customer queries a day, much of the advice is not applicable.

5 out of 5 stars A LONG history with this title..........2006-04-04

I have used this book frequently as a business consultant and teacher over the last 10 years. It is THE "How To" book on the subject. It goes very well with POLYPROC Policies and Procedures (also available on Amazon - search on Polyproc or Sarbanes Oxley).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent. Easy to read or use as a reference........1999-11-09

No dry reading about theory here. Ms. Campbell has created a very useful tool.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, Hard to Understand.......1999-11-03

I found this book hard to understand and it didn't follow any great pattern or flow.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but a bit too general.......1999-05-18

The book is easy to read and understand. It provides helpful guidelines and background material to design procedures. It works a bit as a checklist, in order to remember all the elements in procedure writting. However, it's not meant for any particular industry, and is very general. I would have liked to find more specific examples, and maybe sections for particular industries.

    4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed.......2007-09-28

This book offers direct lessons with worksheets, group activities, games, and book suggestions all to match each skill being taught in the lesson. It is a great component to any social skills class/group. I am using it for 2nd graders, so the preschool focus may be true for general education students, but for students with social needs, this is appropriate for older kids. Enjoy.

    4 out of 5 stars The Basics.......2007-08-23

I thought this was a good tool for use with ALL kids grades K-1, and the activities seemed fun. I was disappointed that it wasn't more clear that it was for such young classes. This isn't going to solve major problems, but it would certainly work to prevent some!

5 out of 5 stars Great for use with autistic children as well as kindergarteners.......2007-03-24

This book has worked well with a small group of 8 CC children. If you need to do pre and post tests for acountability, there is a GREAT face scale that can easily be colored for pre-writers. Activities are well laid out and most are kept to a page, so you don't have to flip back and forth. I am very glad to found this book, I can tell already that it is going to get a lot of use. The pre post test alone is worth the cost of the book!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2007-01-11

This is a good resource. I had to modify many of the activies due to the nature of my urban setting. It sparked ideas for other activities that were more suited to my setting.

Featuring interviews with people in the trenches, as well as self-assessment tools and exercises, Effective Communication Skills will become a valued resource for technical professionals and their colleagues, trainers, and HR departments in all industries.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lots of advice for every day use.......2007-09-14

This book explains the difficulties in the communication among technical persons as well as between technical and non-technical persons. From my own experience I know that talking to technical experts can be very painful. At times they just shout at you and don't listen to what you say. They think that their expertise gives them the right to treat everyone else bad.

The best chapter in this book is chapter 4 "giving and receiving criticism". In the past I had difficulties to convey my critical comments
to technical experts and software developer. As they are very proud of their own work you need to take a lot of care not hurt them. The best way is to explicity state what they have done good before you say what they could do better to even improve their work. I am sure that I can apply these tipps in my work place

This book ist must-read for everyone in a technical environment and for everyone dealing with technical experts.

    3 out of 5 stars Solid Content.......2007-04-06

Mr. Chambers has put together a practical book that dissects many of the basic concepts of communication, and provides some insights about technical professionals. While I don't agree with all his points and believe he tends to over-generalize, the content is solid and easy to understand. For any technical professional looking to increase their overall mastery of soft skills, I would recommend they go beyond this book and find a good set of workshops that allow for testing and practicing the types of concepts outlined.

4 out of 5 stars Effective Communication Skills for Scientific and Technical Professionals.......2006-06-30

Good book. Details the issues in the "cubicle" world of today. Explains how to improve the number one problem in engineering (and business) today, communication!

    2 out of 5 stars common sense.......2005-01-19

I had to buy this book for a class and all I can say is that this book is common sense.

"Don't use demeaning language when talking to your coworkers".

It is also full of meaningless corporate buzzwords:

"Don't engage in postmeeting negative criticism frenzies."

5 out of 5 stars Job Success is Often Contingent Upon Social Skills.......2004-04-24

It is estimated that 85% of job success is contingent upon social skills. Harry E. Chambers' book, Effective Communication Skills for Scientific and Technical Professionals, has illuminated the very essence of social skills that managers need in order to lead well. This book absolutely captures very specific skills that are necessary for technical and scientific professionals to lead well.

It is a fact that individual technical and scientific professionals have great intelligence. But without social intelligence, an intellectually gifted leader may fail. An organization usually cannot reach its highest potential when its individuals work in conflict and without interdependence. Mr. Chamber's book is THE book to buy for its specific, insightful, and pertinent information to assist technical managers in gaining a much higher level of leadership competence.

      Product Description

Speak Your Truth: Proven Strategies for Effective Nurse-Physician Communication, by Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, BS, is both witty and entertaining, and drives home the mission-critical message: Nurse-physician communication breakdowns are disastrous to patient care and emotionally disruptive to all those in the profession. This book takes you through a journey, and leaves you with effective strategies for improving your own nurse-physician relationships.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point.......2006-02-25

I purchased this book intending to read it and resell it. But after finishing it, I have given it a permanent place on my bookshelf. Bartholomew's observations and suggested methodologies are well-worth consideration and implementation by any nurse manager who has ever faced horizontal violence and oppressive behavior in the workplace and wanted to change it. Her presentation is non-academic and user-friendly. She sagely notes that without immediate, system-wide awareness and change, the nursing profession will continue its current downward spiral in morale and retention. This book provides an excellent starting point for revitalizing nursing -- and nurses.

      Book Description

How often do you flnd yourself on the losing end of an argument? What percentage of your success in life depends on your success in conversation? Believe it or not, if you are like most people, your answer would be 98 percent or more.

Do you have a plan ready when you find yourself confronting an adversary at work? At home? On a dark street at night? Or do you just react from habit or emotion? As George Thompson says, "When you react, the event controls you. When you respond, you're in control."

Verbal Judo is a philosophy that can show you how to be better prepared in every verbal encounter: How to listen and speak more effectively; how to engage people through empathy (the most powerful word in the English language); how to avoid the most common conversational disasters; how, instead, to have a proven, easily remembered strategy that will allow you to successfully communicate your point of view and take the upper hand in most disputes.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who deals with difficult people.......2007-08-15

I am an acoustical and systems design consultant, and prior to that have held jobs in sound contracting and public assembly facility technical operations for a total of approximately 25 years. As anybody who has worked in the entertainment, performing arts, hospitality, or religious world can attest, I come into contact with more than my fair share of difficult people and tense situations.

This book and the courses authorized or taught by its author were highly recommended to me approximately 15 years ago by a police lieutenant who gave a guest lecture in a criminology class I was taking in college. This same officer also mentioned the book at an in-house training event at the university sports/concert arena where I worked at the time. It is with no small amount of embarrassment that I must report that it took me until last year to "get around to" buying and reading this book. I certainly could have used its advice, even years before it was written!

Suffice it to say that Verbal Judo is the type of book that is enlightening upon the initial read-through, but whose true value only comes from steady effort to change one's behaviors from long-held bad habits. I believe learning would be far more effective with ongoing practice and coaching, just as with a physical martial art. However, until such a dojo opens its doors in my fair city, I shall have to make do with re-reading the book and discussing its application with others who have been similarly blessed by its wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book and program.......2007-07-16

We are taught Verbal Judo in my line of work. It's an outstanding program. The book goes into how the program originated and explains it in detail. If you're into law enforcement, security or EMS this book should be mandatory reading.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all Law Enforcement........2007-06-19

I have heard the term "verbal judo" tossed around at work since first becoming a Deputy Sheriff with a metro Atlanta Sheriff's Office almost a year ago. For a few years verbal judo was taught to all new deputies but apparently our department let our certification lapse and as such when I joined it had ceased to be taught.

Well I want to be the best deputy that I can be and thus I went and ordered this book. I couldn't put it down! I carried it with me while I worked at the jail and read it in my office on my down time. In two days I finished the book and felt like I had a new weapon to add to my arsenal when dealing with people.

I liked the book so much, I actually loaned it to another deputy on my shift and like wise he couldn't put it down. Another deputy saw him reading the book, asked him where he got and she then proceed to track me down and ask if she could borrow the book next.

The books made me rethink all the altercations I have had at the jail and even in life. How I could have handle things better. As I prepare to go to academy in September and then shortly afterwards, the road, I feel that by taking the time to educate myself on this vital concept, I have greatly helped prepare myself for not only the road but for life itself.

      1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK REALLY,REALLY, SUCKS!!!.......2007-06-06

THIS BOOK TITLE IS VERY MISLEADING..IT DOESN'T GIVE THE TYPE OF KNOWLEDGE IT IMPLIES..IF YOU WANT ANY TYPE OF SKILL, IN TERMS OF COMMUNICATION OR OTHERWISE, THE 48 LAWS OF POWER HAS IT! AS DOES ALL OF ROBERT GREENES OTHER BOOKS..THAT IS AN AUTHOR THAT DOESN'T FALSE ADVERTISE! HE TEACHES EXACTLY WHAT HE CLAIMS AND MUCH MORE!CHECK HIM OUT.THE ART OF SEDUCTION BY GREENE IS ALSO MUCH MORE HELPFUL IN VERBAL SITUATIONS, THOUGH NOT AS MUCH AS HIS OTHER TWO BOOKS.BUYING HIS THREE DEFINITELY WON'T DISAPPOINT

      The 48 Laws of Power

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-05-24

I found this book very interesting and useful.
I wish only not to forget to refresh verbal judo guidelines - I tend
to return to my old , not sophisticated ways of dealing with difficult people..
The idea of "Verbal Judo" makes all the ideas in this book memorable
and significant . Good attitude and wise form of presentation.
I really thank the author for this remarkable book
