2 out of 5 stars Unappropriate but comprehensive.......2007-10-10

This is a jargon Spanish-English Dictionary with good coverage of business terms. However, the reality is that Spanish-speaking countries often use different terms for the same concept. To be useful, such a dictionary, in addition to just translating a term to the other language, should offer a brief definition, enough for a person to know if the term means what he wants to say. In the case that different terms exist for the same concept, it would be very helpful if the dictionary specified the country or countries that use each specific term. From the English side, which I am not familiar with, it could be that UK, Australia and the US have different terms too.. A dictionary that did not deal with such realities should better be called a Mexican Spanish-US English Dictionary..

Soy economista, por mi profesion suelo leer bastante libros y diarios, especificamente de economia y en ingles, tambien poseo varios diccionarios financieros pero los mismos son muy incompletos.
Lo considero el mejor, por que casi no hay un termino economico que no lo contenga. Con anterioridad a la compra, he tenido que recurrir a otros y muchas veces los terminos buscados no estaban.
Sin lugar dudas, mas alla de lo economico de su precio, por su contenido es el mejor.

For my work as business translator I have bought every bilingual English-Spanish business dictionary published for almost 25 years now. Previous purchases included Wiley's English-Spanish, Spanish-English Business Dictionary by the same author, and The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary. Even though the Oxford dictionary claims to have over 50,000 entries, and the Wiley dictionary 40,000, the Wiley dictionary was in reality much larger.

These were the dictionaries I used the most. The rest I had practically never looked at. For several years these two dictionaries helped me get my job done, but as each year went by more and more terms I needed were not there. Terms such as those in electronic commerce and business theory, to name a couple.

Happily, a few months ago Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary was published, and now I have access to over 80,000 entries and over 100,000 translations! Its 2006 publication date insures that it is completely current, and amazon lets you see sample content right on this page. If you go to the Wiley website you can see the entire letter a in the English to Spanish section. I suggest going there and seeing for yourself how much you can find there, and then coming back here to buy it, as it is about $13 cheaper here.

It is clear that this will be the only English-Spanish business dictionary I will need for years to come! Check out the sample content and see for yourself if you agree!

5 out of 5 stars Put your dinero where your boca is..........2003-10-07

The reader from Atlanta really trashes this dictionary and takes care to provide some examples of the flaws discovered. I was surprised, because it was recommended to me by an official translator in Madrid and I was considering purchasing it. Given that the Atlanta reader doesn't like the Rutledge dictionary, I'd really appreciate his/her recommendation of a better dictionary to serve as reference for business translations, especially in the investment field. Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Many, many errors.......1999-11-23

There are literally dozens of errors in this dictionary. "Banner year" is translated literally as "año insignia," which is nonsense in Spanish. "Mover and shaker" is also translated literally ("promotor e impulsor"). It's as though the author didn't understand English! Other absurdities are "herein" (aquí dentro--should be "en el presente"), hereunder (más abajo--should be "conforme al presente"), etc. Again, these are literal translations that do not fit in business or legal writing. "Judicial notice" which is actually "reconocimiento de hechos notorios" is translated as citación judicial--again, complete lack of understanding of the term. I'd stay away from this one like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish Commercial Dictionary.......1999-09-02

As a translator who specializes in financial and commerical texts, I can honestly say that the Routledge is the most complete dictionary I have found on the subject. There is nothing that compares to it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good and educational.......2007-04-18

This is a very good book. We used it in our large organization during our Spanish classes and the book was well received.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic Spanish book.......2006-03-27

This books is a good book, but it's not a great book. The way the author chose to organize the book doesn't make sense. Some basic things that we should learn first are left until later, such as family and the names of each family member (ie. madre, padre, nino, nina, hermano, etc.). The book also has all these exercises that asks us questions and asks us to ask questions, but didn't really teach us how to ask questions. We doesn't get a formal introduction on how to use words like "Quien", "Donde", "Que", etc.

Positives of this book include: Vocabulary that is used in each chapter is usually listed in the beginning of each chapter, good and clear explanations of the grammar it does cover, and lots of exercises for practical practice.

Another quirk of this book is that it's written as if someone who's Espanol (Spain-ish) wrote it for an audience dealing with Mexicans. So, it would use vocabulary and tell us "cultural notes" that are not how Mexicans speak or write. My Spanish teacher has to tell us from time to time that certain vocabulary words are not used in Mexico and will give us the words that are used regularly. I was especially puzzled when the author put in a food menu with all the prices, dollars and cents, separated by a comma instead of a period.

Outside of a few quirks, the clarity and ease of understanding make this a good book for those learning Spanish for the first time or want a review if you haven't taken Spanish in a while. I would recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Continuing Spanish Education.......2006-03-23

This book is very easy to work with and gives the reader the opportunity to pace themselves at their Spanish study. Exercises are thourough and answers are provied in the back of the book for those studying at home or for lesiure.

I only wish I had been able to acquire the most recent edition of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Dream.......2005-11-30

I got this book as part of an adult education course I was teaching at a community college and, after having studied Spanish for years, this is the best text I have seen... period. It has all the basics covered, and covered well. It is thorough and concise. It does not go into a lot of unnecessary material, but sticks to what is necessary to communicate well. It consistently reinforces previous lessons and packs a tremendous amount of learning and exercise into a small amount of homework. The examples chosen are easily digested and make teaching wonderful. My students gave rave reviews of the material and I cannot recommmend it highly enough. As will all language texts, it is the student's responsibility to pack in the vocabulary on their own, but the base grammar is all here and extremely well presented. I would take an old edition of this book over any other new texts available. These are the best.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent place to begin.......2001-04-16

Basic Spanish Grammar is an excellent starting point for one who wants to begin learning the spanish language, or is in need of a refresher course. I recently enrolled in a conversational spanish course and this book was one of the two texts used in class.

All of the exercises contained within the book are written in a clear manner which makes them easy to understand. Basic concepts which I hadn't thought of in about 15 years since my last spanish class came back very quickly and I was able to expand upon my previous knowledge at a much quicker pace than I would have thought possible.

The vocabulary is introduced in a logical manner, with examples that show just how they would be used in everyday speech. The sections dealing with the gender of words, plural forms, and definite and indefinite articles is very helpful for one who hasn't been previously introduced to the concepts.

I highly recommend this book to anybody who wishes to learn the language. Beginning students will find the book very informative, especially when combined with the pronunciation tapes or CD's.

3 out of 5 stars Boring layout, more dictionary-like than anything.......2007-03-11

Very thorough as far as words used in various business types, but very straightforward (boring). Not enough real life examples for my liking. Any more cut and dry and it would be a dictionary. Blah. I'll use it for reference than as a study guide as I had intended.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, needs update.......2007-01-04

I work as a translator and occupational Spanish instructor at a university in the US. I use about 12 sources of information when I translate and this is one of them. I purchasd the book simply due to a lack of other options.

This dictionary of sorts is organized into functional business areas such as accounting, sales, human resources etc. The authors did an extensive amount of work putting this together but I would say it is past due for an update to make itself useful in the US.

      Here are some observations:

      PROS
      - Very nice size and the print is easy to read.
      - Price is reasonable.
      - Thoughtfully laid out.
      - The authors seemed to really know what they were doing
      in terms of language expertise.

      CONS
      - The Spanish used is that from Spain, so for someone learning US Spanish, it has great limitation. Although, a large part of the vocabulary is the same and translating is a moving target. But if you are working with the Spanish or studying there, it could be a good resource.
      - The showstopper here is the fact that there is no English to Spanish glossary, and the reason I would recommend buyers go elsewhere. In other words, if you want to quickly find a word in Spanish and you know the word in English, you are out of luck. Strangely, it does have a Spanish to English glossary so you must first know the word in Spanish, so you can learn it is English. Just plain bizarre considering the cover is written in all English. But, this is something the authors could remedy in another version and make it very useful.

      [...]

For now, I would recommend looking at another book.

2 out of 5 stars Only has 3,500 entries, and is over 10 years old........2006-05-11

I am a business translator, and have bought every English-Spanish dictionary published for almost 25 years now. This dictionary has only 3,500 entries, and was translated in 1997 from a 1995 German book. Hence, the book is not current, is very limited in scope, and worse of all, not even oriented towards English or Spanish.

I gave it two stars because its sample sentences may be helpful for beginners. This book will be of no use to anyone of an intermediate of advanced level in either language. It is completely inadequate for business translators.

I recommend your buying one or both of the following: Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary, or The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary. If you only need one, then buy Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary. Do not buy Mastering Spanish Business Vocabulary : A Thematic Approach, unless you are aware of and accept these limitations.

4 out of 5 stars Thematic Approach helps you master one thing at a time.......2000-06-14

This book is very helpful. I read it before studying marketing for a year in Mexico. It helped me get a grasp on the vocabulary in my classes.

Later I was offered a job because I spoke Spanish and knew about business. This book helped forge the foundation of an international business career.

Currently I manage an import/export business in Monterrey, Mexico. This book has been extremely helpful.

I highly reccomended this book to a professor at the University of Tennessee for required reading use in his classes. (Spanish for Business)

      4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2000-03-28

This book has proven very benificial to me. I am in the process of moving to South America with my employer. I am a Human Resource Manager and this book has helped me greatly with my spanish buisness vocabulary. Another book that I have found to be even more indispensable for me and a definite "5" star is the book "Spanish for Human Resources Managers."

This up-to-date bi-lingual dictionary is a “must have” for practicing real estate agents, licensees and consumers.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay if you only need only a few real estate terms........2006-05-13

In reality, any dealings in real estate also require terms in related fields, such as finance, taxes, accounting, banking, law, and more. This dictionary provides about 2,000 entries. A decent selection of terms pertaining to some areas of real estate. Realistically, a bilingual dictionary in real estate would need many more entries to properly cover this and related fields.

There are complete business dictionaries which cost about the same as this one. The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary provides about 50,000 translations, and Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary has over 100,000. That means that for each term in this dictionary there are 50 in Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary.

If you buy one of these two you get thousands of real estate terms plus many thousands of terms that you are likely to need anyway if you work in real estate or related fields. Therefore, I recommend buying The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary or Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary instead of this one.

5 out of 5 stars A superb resource for real estate salesmen.......2004-08-13

English-Spanish Real Estate Dictionary is a handy compilation of 2,000 real estate terms and definitions for quick translation from English to Spanish or Spanish to English. For maximum convenience, each English and Spanish definition is listed side by side; the first half of the book organizes the entries in English alphabetical order, the second half in Spanish alphabetical order. A superb resource for real estate salesmen, home owners, prospective home owners, and anyone seeking to pass the real estate licensing exam.
