Book Description

This text is a treatment planner and theory guide for therapists working from systemic and postmodern approaches. Unlike existing resources, this treatment planner provides a means to directly integrate family therapy theory and practice. By providing treatment planning strategies along with complete overviews of specific theories, the book provides a remedy for the common "missing link" between theory and practice. The purpose of this book is to fill the ever-widening gap between formal training in theory and actual practice in managed-care dominated workplaces. The text covers 11 of the most widely used family therapies providing a summary for each theory and then specific strategies for developing a treatment plan.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good text book for overview of the major approaches.......2007-09-21

This textbook was recommended by my professor, and I find it a good tool for therapists who are looking for very basic theoretical information on the various therapies for families out there. Good examples and vignettes make its application simpler.

Good for beginners.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book. High Price.......2007-04-05

This book is tailored for California MFTs. It covers the major theories that are presently in use. It gives clear vignettes and has excellent treatment goals for each stage of therapy. It is a necessity to have this book when studying for the Standard Written and Written Clinical Vignette exams.

    Product Description

The concept of "funds of knowledge" is based on a simple premise: people are competent and have knowledge, and their life experiences have given them that knowledge. The claim in this book is that first-hand research experiences with families allow one to document this competence and knowledge, and that such engagement provides many possibilities for positive pedagogical actions. Drawing from both Vygotskian and neo-sociocultural perspectives in designing a methodology that views the everyday practices of language and action as constructing knowledge, the funds of knowledge approach facilitates a systematic and powerful way to represent communities in terms of the resources they possess and how to harness them for classroom teaching. This book accomplishes three objectives: It gives readers the basic methodology and techniques followed in the contributors' funds of knowledge research; it extends the boundaries of what these researchers have done; and it explores the applications to classroom practice that can result from teachers knowing the communities in which they work. In a time when national educational discourses focus on system reform and wholesale replicability across school sites, this book offers a counter-perspective stating that instruction must be linked to students' lives, and that details of effective pedagogy should be linked to local histories and community contexts. This approach should not be confused with parent participation programs, although that is often a fortuitous consequence of the work described. It is also not an attempt to teach parents "how to do school" although that could certainly be an outcome if the parents so desired. Instead, the funds of knowledge approach attempts to accomplish something that may be even more challenging: to alter the perceptions of working-class or poor communities by viewing their households primarily in terms of their strengths and resources, their defining pedagogical characteristics. Funds of Knowledge: Theorizing Practices in Households, Communities, and Classrooms is a critically important volume for all teachers and teachers-to-be, and for researchers and graduate students of language, culture, and education.

    Book Description

The importance of hospital information systems (HIS) is unquestionable: they are an integral tool in facilitating the management of a hospital's medical and administrative information, thereby improving the quality of health care. Drs. Van de Velde and Degoulet's book, Clinical Information Systems: A Component-Based Approach, will detail the many components involved in the implementation of HIS. The book will feature several case studies from North America and Europe that serve to illustrate these components. The book will detail the extension of HIS to multi-site environments, which are implemented in an effort to better serve the public. Such extended networks are called community health information systems (CHIS) or networks (CHIN). Clinical information systems (CIS) is used in the direct management of the patient, and this book focuses on the implementation of an integrated and comprehensive CIS. Designed for use by all healthcare professionals, the book's chapter highlights include: Introduction: The Evolution of Health Information Systems; Frameworks: A Collection of Business Objects; The Patient Component; The Medical Record Component; The Knowledge Component; The Resource Management Component; The Security Component; and Imaging Management and Integration. The addition of case studies illustrates the role of these components, and a Glossary provides invaluable definitions for the reader's easy reference.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Apparently, a classic text............2007-07-01

But I thought it was boring & not all that informative. I struggled through it because I was taking a class on CIS. Surely, there's something better out there.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-01-24

For a book titled Clinical Information Systems, you would think that would be the contents. Unfortunately it is not. Old re-hashed arguments about CPOE, a non-informative review of security, a little touch of imaging IT and that's about it. Nary a mention of clinical systems such as laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, clinical documentation, etc. A rather disappointing product. I have serious reservations about the rest of the texts from this publisher after reading this publication.

          Book Description

Written by the foremost author in the field, this book explores the principles of informal logic as applied to clinical problems and the uses of evidence in logical reasoning. It covers general concepts, theories, paradigms, and definitions; EBM reasoning at each step of a clinician's work; and decision making based on the integration of all of the above. The book describes the assessment of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in practical clinical medicine; clinical and community health; and methods in various quantitative and qualitative analyses, especially meta-analysis. The innovative blend of informal logic and structured evidence-based reasoning make this book stand out in a crowd.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book since Sackett's EBM text.......2004-04-21

After reading this text I have to say that it is the most complete text on EBM to date. Most EBM texts focus on the statistical basics of EBM which for the average person can appear confusing and difficult to understand. Yet this text goes beyond that to discuss important issues such as clinical reasoning amd decision analysis and lays the groundwork for being able to grasp the statistical significance of EBM.

The understanding of how the scientific process works in the cognitive aspects of biomedicine is highly stressed. This, in my opinion, is what makes this text valuable. One does not need to have an extensive medical background to understand the basic concepts presented. The book does an excellent job of making EBM easy to comprehend. Students who are interested in a career in biomedicine and the allied health sciences should be encouraged to read this book and once read, will be able to apply what Dr Jenicek discusses to aid them throughout their career.

          A well done text.
