Penzler Pick, July 2001: Working in a mystery tradition that will cause genre aficionados to think of such classic sleuths as Melville Davisson Post's Uncle Abner or Robert van Gulik's Judge Dee, Alexander McCall Smith creates an African detective, Precious Ramotswe, who's their full-fledged heir.
It's the detective as folk hero, solving crimes through an innate, self-possessed wisdom that, combined with an understanding of human nature, invariably penetrates into the heart of a puzzle. If Miss Marple were fat and jolly and lived in Botswana--and decided to go against any conventional notion of what an unmarried woman should do, spending the money she got from selling her late father's cattle to set up a Ladies' Detective Agency--then you have an idea of how Precious sets herself up as her country's first female detective. Once the clients start showing up on her doorstep, Precious enjoys a pleasingly successful series of cases.
But the edge of the Kalahari is not St. Mary Mead, and the sign Precious orders, painted in brilliant colors, is anything but discreet. Pointing in the direction of the small building she had purchased to house her new business, it reads "THE NO. 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY. FOR ALL CONFIDENTIAL MATTERS AND ENQUIRIES. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED FOR ALL PARTIES. UNDER PERSONAL MANAGEMENT."
The solutions she comes up with, whether in the case of the clinic doctor with two quite different personalities (depending on the day of the week), or the man who had joined a Christian sect and seemingly vanished, or the kidnapped boy whose bones may or may not be those in a witch doctor's magic kit, are all sensible, logical, and satisfying. Smith's gently ironic tone is full of good humor towards his lively, intelligent heroine and towards her fellow Africans, who live their lives with dignity and with cautious acceptance of the confusions to which the world submits them. Precious Ramotswe is a remarkable creation, and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency well deserves the praise it received from London's Times Literary Supplement. I look forward with great eagerness to the upcoming books featuring the memorable Miss Ramotswe, Tears of the Giraffe and Morality for Beautiful Girls, soon to be available in the U.S. --Otto Penzler

“The Miss Marple of Botswana.”
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
“The author’s prose has the merits of simplicity, euphony and precision. His descriptions leave one as if standing in the Botswana landscape. This is art that conceals art. I haven’t read anything with such unalloyed pleasure for a long time.”
ANTHONY DANIELS, THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
“The writing [is] very accessible, yet the prose so beautiful.... I choose books that give me pure joy, whose world I want to stay in for a long time.”
AMY TAN, FOR THE TODAY SHOW BOOK CLUB
“General audiences will welcome this little gem of a book just as much if not more than mystery readers.”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
“Smart and sassy...Precious’s progress is charted in passages that have the power to amuse or shock or touch the heart, sometimes all at once.... Thoroughly engaging and entertaining.”
THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
“One of the best, most charming, honest, hilarious and life-affirming books to appear in years.”

A wonderful series - but start in the middle.......2007-10-19
I've enjoyed every book in this series set in Botswana - but I must say that this book, the first, is not the strongest or in my opinon the best place to start. I would instead recommend "Morality for Beautiful Girls", number 3 in the series, or "The Kalahari Typing School for Men," number 4. But wherever you start, it's hard not to like these wonderful books.
A Classic.......2007-10-16
What a superb book and series! To categorize this book as a mystery or a detective novel is a misguided attempt at characterizing this novel far too narrowly. Sure, there are little stories within the book which are "mysteries" but these are merely the background, along with Botswana, on which the larger story is told. Indeed, those readers who read The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series seeking a detective story may be disappointed, but they will at least have had the literary content of their typical reading raised.
This book also isn't "simple" as some have suggested either. The subleties of human strength and human frailty , honesty and duplicity, love and selfishness, generosity and greed are worked out in the lives Mma Ramotswe and Mr. J L B Matekoni and their clients and friends and offer a far more profoundly insightful glimpse of human relationships than any complex plot twisting thriller. The characters are beautifully drawn, warts and all, and they draw the reader into their world and make the reader feel that they too are there with Mma Ramotswe, drinking red bush tea, and remembering to treat each other and everyone they meet with respect, kindness, grace, tact and dignity.
A Kid's Review.......2007-10-08
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
By Alexander McCall Smith
If you're looking for an engaging, well written book with unpredictable plot twists, than The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is absolutely perfect for you. This mystery follows the ups and downs of the life of Precious Ramotswe, starting in the present and containing flashbacks to childhood and adolescent years in her country of pride and joy, Botswana. Each memory reveals a tad bit more about the independent and smart personality of Precious Ramotswe, the reason for which she eventually settles down and opens the first detective agency run solely by a woman in all of Botswana. Although slow at first, business catches, like a spark held to gasoline. Throughout unimaginable mini mysteries, including a confused crocodile, an unknown double-identity and a dangerous case involving witch doctors, Precious Ramotswe uses sharp intellect to figure out the absurdly impossible.
Out of five stars, I rate The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency a four. This is because though the plot drew you in and left you hanging at each chapter, I feel that even more descriptive words could have been selected at times. Something I can relate to in the book is the fact that Precious is constantly having to put up with the doubts from various men that she, a lady, can run a business. Although I have not encountered this in such an extreme form, the "Men are better than woman" idea is still relevant at times even in more modern countries such as the U.S. One reason I really enjoyed this book is because I encountered a style of writing which is new to me. I found it very interesting that the author conveyed Precious' past through snippets and small chapters interspersed throughout the book, instead of merely starting at the beginning of Precious' life. This way the past is revealed slowly as opposed to all at once. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a flavorful book that should be added to your repertoire of reading today!
Blah.......2007-10-06
The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency is the first story in a series of mystery novels about Mme. Ramotswe and the detective agency that she opens with the money left to her by her dying father. The catch here, if you hadn't noticed from the title, is that she is a woman, and not only that, the first woman detective in all of Botswana. If you missed that intricate plot detail, never fear, the main character will remind you of it during the course of the story. Again, and again, and again....
I debated between one and two stars for this one. It wasn't a total waste. It had some charm to it... some. In the end I give it one star simply because I had much higher expectations for it, and it was a let down. Wow, and what a let down it was! I honestly really thought I would enjoy it. I was interested in the mystery aspect of it. I like a good mystery novel. I have a fascination with Africa, and being set in Africa, I was thinking "this looks like a winner."
One of the main problems I had with is was the way in which the dialog of the characters was written. Another reviewer described it as "baby talk", and really, I can't think of any better way to describe it. I keep trying to come up with reasons for why it was written in this manner, but none of them make any sense to me. It just makes the characters come across as stupid, as though African people are incapable of using any words longer than five letters long or expressing themselves with any sort of eloquence what-so-ever.
There's also the plot. Mme. Ramotswe solves several cases throughout the story with a certain finesse of Inspector Gadget. SPOILER ALERT! There is the case of the missing Christian husband, who Ramotswe is convinced has run away with another woman ("Men are stupid, LOLZ!!!1" is a major theme of the book). Turns out he was swallowed whole by a crocodile. Of course! There's the case of the 16 year old girl, who actually outsmarts Ramotswe. The girl is actually the only character in this book that I liked. There's the doctor with seemingly inconsistent talent. Like a plot twist straight out of a daytime soap opera, it turns out he has an identical twin brother who is getting to substitute for him in hospitals so he can hold down two jobs and earn twice the money. Wow! That makes so much sense... wouldn't he spend twice as much since he has to have two places to live? Other than that, I'm sure this is totally probable. And then there is the heart breaking case of a missing boy which challenges Ramotswe the most, and puts her in the most danger... or so says the back cover of the book. Allow me to paraphrase this climax of the book for you:
Ramotswe: Your husband murdered a boy for Muti!
Witchdoctor's Wife: Not he didn't. The boy is living on a cattle ranch.
Ramotswe: Show me.
Wife: Okay
(drives to ranch)
Ramotswe: Are you the boy who was kidnapped from the school teacher.
Boy: Yes
Ramotswe: Okay, I'm taking you home now.
(drives to the boys house and drops him off)
Seriously, if you blink, you might miss this climatic ending. I have watched episodes of Scooby Doo with more drama and suspense.
In conclusion. Don't read it. Really, just don't waste your time. The No. 1 Detective Agency furthers my belief that it is now possible for anyone to get a book published.
The End.
simple, fresh and enjoyable.........2007-09-18
Hats off to the author for attempting to deviate from the mainline sleuth stories (with protagonist being a gent that is tech savy or a martial art/sharp shooting expert chasing around in expensive cars in a story where atleast a dozen people end up dying).
This is quite very different, with a not so attractive single woman running a detective agency solving cases that are simple and almost realistic. The African setting without any of the typical 'gods have left Africa' theme makes it even more interesting. I will definitely be reading few more books in this series.

The "pop culture engineer" work makes this worth buying........2006-01-14
The one show annual is widely regarded as 'the best of the best' in creative advertising. That said, this edition was a particularly good annual featuring some great work for playstation by tbwa paris, and the world famous 'cog' spot for honda by wieden + kennedy london. However, I was expecting to see all this in the annual. For me, the campaign that made this annual worth the purchase was a campaign that simply leapt off of its unassuming 514th page. Ironically enough, this advertising campaign was about advertising, directed at young people interested in the creative side of the business. As someone that currently works as a creative, it struck a particular chord with me.
For starters, the colors, font treatment, and stylish design of this campaign cuts through the other work in this annual like a well-sharpened sushi knife. Art directed by Lee Jennings, the ads all emphasize the headline "become a pop-culture engineer" a line that for me, quickly gets to the heart of what this business is all about.
Written by Ian Fairbrother, each headline is followed by insightful prose about the biz that really reminds us why we all got into creative advertising in the first place. The ads honestly made me a bit emotional when I first read them, a pretty remarkable thing for a print ad, but yet the one thing we all aspire our work to do.
Really, I am amazed that the campaign hasn't received more attention globally in the past year, though who knows what the future holds. Either way, I am sure we will see more in years to come from Fairbrother and Jennings. I know that the next time they're in the One Show, I'll be buying a copy.

Mercedes Raye.......2007-08-20
This is one of my favorite books. Yes it certainly is an adults book but it has a great story line. I only hope that Barbara Moss write a sequel. Great book!!!
In and Out.......2007-08-05
This is a wonderful book esp. if you are a educated jumper rider. I can't even put it down and have recommended it to many of my other horse friends. The story line and details are right on... it sounds like it is written by someone who has "been there and done that" in Wellington and on the nitty gritty jumper circuit as well as climbing to the top in the horse competition world. I can't wait for another book written by Barbara Moss regarding any story line on the competitive horse world with its background in Wellington and Europe.
Loved the horsey talk, hated the characters.......2007-06-27
Jerico Brandeis is a Grand Prix level rider who has set his sights on quaifying for the Olympic team and running his training/showing business. He is a cocky, and arrogant personality who has loads of psychoanalyisis to get through. He also has some serious difficulties with women and definitely waffles between viewing them as objects to falling desperately head over heals in love with them. While I agree that this is very stereotypical of trainers in this industry, that's just it... it's a stereotype.
Of course such a self involved individual needs a roommate; welcome Starbucks; this is a character that I think is supposed to be a foil/comedic relief for the story. I hate this guy; he is a former Starbucks employee/ photographer who has the brain of a pea and the looks of a male model. Come on!
Now we get to the conflict. Much of the drama in this book arises from him crossing over professional lines; as in having an affair with his main patron's wife, oh, and getting caught at it, then doing it again and getting her pregnant when the spouse is STERILE (DUH!). This book was pure soap opera drama in the human relations department with a little porn thrown in for flavoring.
The only redeeming value in this book is the depiction of the horses, the jumping and the actual mechanics of the show jumping industry (which was still a bit stereotypical) In terms of the descriptions of the riding and show jumping component, I felt that the book did a good job in giving us a glimpse into that world. Jericho's career was sped up a bit for the sake of the plot line, but you do get a good idea of how hard it is to make it in that world.
Second Book.......2007-06-15
Any word yet on a second book for the series?
Couldn't put it down.......2007-03-15
The story sweeps you along. Horses, adventure and romance (yes, and sex)combine with intriguing characters, humor and plot twists to produce a great story. I can't wait for her next novel.

In Making Waves, Reagan is at his hard-hitting best as he brings his well-researched commentary to the issues and challenges facing our country. Making Waves is part primer on what conservatives believe, part wake-up call, and part family album. And it's completely Mike Reagan--colorful, compelling, and unapologetic.

The Truth About Vince Foster Cover-up Exclusive........2005-12-24
Feeling let down by the print and broadcast press, millions have turned to talk radio as an alternative source of information. Mike Reagan, who 'made waves' for many years, starting in 1982 from San Diego and still at it in 1996, tells why he thinks newspaper circulation is on the decline, then and now. He also gives his take on network television news as being distorted, incomplete and heavily filtered.
On 'The Michael Reagan Talk Show,' he claims to give 'accurate information' because he used 'reliable sources and knowledgeable' contacts. He read up to eight newspapers each day and followed through, doing his homework, before he brought an issue 'on the air'! He says, "there is a price to pay for bucking the liberal elite in this country. I get the information nobody else gets." He calls the press "cowardly, ignorant, biased, lazy and panderers."
There was a time, he asserts in this 'bold expose,' when investigative reporters used to go undercover to get the truth. "How much courage and journalistic integrity does it take to rewrite press releases...then pass it off as [hard] news story?" The press fails to check for factual information and verification. Sometimes they print 'rumors' as facts. My local daily paper left out a whole decade, things important in my life, when promoting the renovation of a movie theater into a concert/symphony venue for the rich folks. When I contacted the publisher, I was told they'd do a follow-up, but no "correction" as apparently an ommission of that magnitude doesn't matter. No follow-up was ever done! I went so far as trying to get the local theater management to make a disclaimer, but they were the source who sent the incomplete, factually incorrect articles to the paper, and didn't even get a reply. They put what they wanted in the paper, as they would not admit to defrauding the public. Most newspaper articles are written on a third-grade level in quite simple vocabulary; they don't care about digging for the truth to have real, complete stories which make sense. They don't care who they hurt by ommissions. It's the bigwigs they pander to and willingly distort the whole picture.
He re-names 'The Washington Post,' which was lionized in the movie, 'All the Presidents Men,' as 'The Washington Pravada since it publishes propaganda instead of impartial news, slanting the facts. "The much-vaunted people's "right to know" -- not by the government but by the press itself" burying important stories on page 27D. Some facts or happenings, the press doesn't think newsworthy. Thus, censorship, bias, arrogance, disdain for the readers' intelligence, and a slap on the face. As I noted in Knoxville, the reporters (some of them) are "lacking in professional curiosity these days."
Being the son of former President Ronald Reagan, he tells it like it is. But, I was surprized with this statement, "The American press has been cowed into silent submission by the political establishment." No, talk radio is not all "hate" radio, but I do hate sports talk, especially "Fox with an attitude" which is plain vulgar. It displaced my music four years ago on 1040 but now, to my delight, Music Of Your Life replaced the filth spewing from that 'fast talk.' On WHO, 1040 in Des Moines, they still air the nighttime talk shows as does WNOX here.
Michael Reagan has written THE CITY ON THE HILL, ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, CORPORATE AMERICA (2003) and edited REFLECTIONS ON THE NATURE OF GOD and INSIDE THE MIND OF GOD: IMAGES AND WORDS OF INNER SPACE, written by Sharon Begley.
Another Reagan makes a difference.......2005-02-08
Mike Reagan's book is as timely in 2005 as it was when it was written in 1996. From the One World Government to the Clinton friends death list to our inability to defend ourselves in the event of a nuclear war, it's all there. This book can be read a chapter at a time, in no particular sequence because each chapter has a seperate message. It is a must for all people, you can differ with Mike's views, but let's have a national discussion about the important issues rather than the leftists trying to stop everything that isn't run by the government.
Great commentary on America's Ways.......1999-05-01
One of my friend's dads gave me this book to read and it was fantastic. Mike has great opinions on all subject that has to do with current issues. Liberals won't like this book but I think they should read it to get a great argument to their ideas. Mike writes as if he's right there talking to you. It's a good book explaining a lot of "conservative" ideas in detail. Easy reading and full of insight. It didn't get my 5 stars because Mike tends to use a lot of numbers and figures when proving his points. I know people say the numbers don't lie, but I just think people can use numbers to their advantage to easily.
A gripping book about the events shaping our times.......1997-10-04
Although Mike gives us a glimpse into the events which shaped his life, most readers will probably be more interested in the events that shape their lives, and Mr. Reagan has plenty to say about that. Most political and social liberals will probably not enjoy this book, but it should be must reading for everyone interested in the socio-political scene. Mike compiles info on a number of important subjects that seldom get this thorough a treatment, and that is what makes the book spellbinding, relevant, and overdue. Don't even think about not reading this one!
