The Mentor's Guide - Feb. 20, 2003.......2003-02-18
This book provides the best definition of a mentor that I have come across thus far with the statement "...and at there best they inspire us to reach beyond ourselves; they show us how to make a positive difference in a wider world". It is an easy to read reference tool filled with applicable information about how to prepare for and what to watch for during your journey as a mentor. The author does an excellent job of inspiring a can do attitude by giving the reader the ability to use this book as a workbook to be able to work through real life experiences. This book is a must have for anyone desiring to be in a mentoring relationship.
A must read for mentoring!.......2002-09-30
I just finished my thesis on mentoring child care center directors. The Mentor's Guide was the best resource. My thesis quotes many authors but there was non better than Lois Zachary. Her book is the easiest to read and she puts into words what I was thinking. I can't say enough about the wealth of information, ideas, quotes and straight comments that I found useful in this book. If you are embarking on a mentoring relationship this book is a must read. Thank you Lois.
The Mentor's Guide.......2000-07-07
Lois Zachary has made a wonderful contribution to the field of mentoring. Her new book is an "easy read" with wonderful metaphors, appropriate emphasis on relationship building, clear distinctions between old style mentoring versus mentoring as a partnership, interesting examples, and useful exercises.
I bought the book out of curiosity rather than truly being interested in the topic. In minutes I found myself fascinated, and I even saw applications of the information to my relationship with my 10 year old grandson!

Educational Trainer .......2006-11-10
This book is IDEAL for anyone who is going to train or teach anything. How to cut the fluff and deliver the required facts.
A refreshing approach to learning and training--I highly recommend it..........2006-11-03
I am not a professional trainer by trade. However, I was recently appointed training coordinator for my department. The Accelerated Learning Handbook has definitely helped me approach my job with a fresh perspective. The information, ideas, and techniques presented have enabled me to more effectively train those in my department as well as those in other functions. Before reading the AL Handbook, I thought all that was needed to effectively teach someone was simply to make sure all of my PowerPoint slides were logically put together. I now have a broader view of how people learn and a sold framework to use when putting together training materials on any topic. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to engage the audience and create meaningful, effective training presentations.
Practical ideas for facilitators.......2006-02-21
I have worked with adult learners for more than fifteen years and have always tried to incorporate whole-brained, participative learning. This book provided some excellent theoretical background as well as a lot of new instantly usable ideas. I wasn't even all the way through before I applied a couple of the techniques and got an excellent response from my client.
excellent training tool.......2003-07-06
I was getting ready to prepare a training program for 44 persons when I read this book. Immediately! after I used the guidelines to prepare my session. Preparation was fast and easy -and fun! I really couldn't believe that it was that easy to apply and it has been one of my best sessions to date. I refer to it when I need a refresher or a new perspective. I definately reccomend this book for trainers who need to keep their material fresh and interesting (esp. in-house trainers).
Accelerated Learning Handbook.......2002-01-02
Finally, teachers and administrators have a useful tool to recharge their classrooms/schools. We have become so test oriented that many times we forget that the process of learning comes from the doing. The statement comes to mind that we utter with new approaches," When do I have the time to get it all in?". That is where the problem lies! We are so pressured with these new demands that we loose sight of what is important, the process. This book will give us a clearer picture of how we can recharge our teaching and can provide the key so we can use the ideas to change the way we teach or approach the students' learning who are in our care.

Book Description
The key to teaching business ethics successfully, says Sims, is to start with clear goals and a sensible expectation of outcomes, and with a true knowledge and appreciation of how people actually learn. Seems obvious enough, he says, but the surprise is that so few understand this. Thus, the teaching of business ethics is often an unproductive, frustrating exercise in futility. Sims hopes to change that. Proceeding with the conviction that open communications between teacher and student before, during, and after the teaching experience is vital, Sims identifies key teaching processes, gives practical advice on designing and planning the curriculum, and offers guidance on how to develop a climate conducive to effective learning. He highlights the importance of creating a classroom climate that encourages open dialogue, good moral conversation, and conversational learning. And throughout he emphasizes that learning styles and experiential learning theory are cornerstones of teaching business ethics, thus taking an approach unlike any in the literature. An important guide for those who are new to teaching this essential subject, Sims' book will also be helpful for more experienced teachers who are wondering why their own methods do not always work, or do not work as well as they believe they should. Sims identifies important processes that must be managed if business ethics is to be taught and learned successfully--processes such as creating stakeholder commitment to the goals, purposes, and outcomes of the teaching effort, and curriculum design and planning that are attuned to individual differences in learning styles, motivation, and values. Also included in Sims' processes are the development of individual school outcomes, and expectations, and the assessment procedures that can measure them. He discusses the importance of incorporating debriefing into an experiential learning exercise or discussion, and goes on to give an in-depth discussion of the pedagogical approaches that allow teachers to teach the practical and theoretical components of the subject simultaneously. Well illustrated with examples, such as an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and a way to institutionalize outcomes assessment by means of total quality management, Sims' book returns constantly to his major theme: that to teach business ethics effectively the teacher must first create a climate of trust and sharing within and between students, and between students and teacher, and that the teacher must have a concrete way to measure the impact of the teaching effort's results.

Customer Reviews:
Centered on Textbooks and the Classroom.......2005-03-21
The first 90 pages of Roberts book examine basic study skills such as time management, memory, learning styles and critical reading and thinking. The next section is the particular strength of this volume, in which she looks at how to get the most out of your textbook. What follows is over 100 pages that look at how to locate major ideas, get the most out of grapics, identify your texts organizational style and how to study out of it. She finishes by looking at needed skills for the classroom. A useful addition to your library.
not the best...but a useful strategy guide for beginners!.......2002-03-25
I have a burning fascination for books on effective study strategies. I am always searching for better and more effective strategies to help kids and teens to excell in their school life...also, to help professional adults navigate text information overload as part of their evening academic pursuits.
Judy Roberts's Effective Study Skills is one of these books I have acquired as part of my lifelong search. It is comprehensive...also presents a broad range of study strategies, with quite extensive coverage of reading skills needed to process college textbooks...but still not the best.
However, looking from the standpoint of a beginner in acquiring study strategies, I reckon this book can still serve as a useful strategy guide.
For beginners, the layout of the book's substantial content runs as follows:
- Time Management;
- Concentration & Memory;
- Learning Styles;
- Critical Reading & Thinking;
- Gathering Main Ideas;
- Reading Graphic Illustrations;
- Understanding Organisational Patterns;
- Adopting Vocabulary Acquisition Strategies;
- Study Methods for Textbooks;
- Notetaking, Annotating & Underlining;
- Writing in College;
- Test Taking Skills;
The main reason why I rate it as 'not the best' is because I am comparing it with James Semones's 'Effective Study Skills'. Although the latter book is somewhat long-winded to some extent, I strongly feel it has a much broader scope and also farther depth than Judy Roberts' book. It is also written in a scholarly - albeit serious - manner, very unlike Roberts' book, which is written in an informal and conversational style.
For beginner readers into study strategies - and those who simply don't like long-winded books -, George Usova's 'Efficient Study Strategies' is worth exploring! It gives direct-to-the-point instructions...and also the easiest to read, especially for beginners!
