Handbook of Organizational Communication: An Interdisciplinary Perspective
ASIN: 0803955030 |
Book Description
Organizational communication as a discipline has grown tremendously over the latter part of the century, but accompanying that growth has been a struggle to establish a clear identity for the field. The ongoing evolution of complex organizations in an equally complex global environment has scholars continuing to define and redefine the focus, the boundaries, and the future of the field.
The New Handbook of Organizational Communication is a landmark volume that weaves together the various threads of this interdisciplinary area of scholarship.
Customer Reviews:
Thumbs Up!.......2002-09-16
This book provides a solid overview of Organizational Communication from a scholarly perspective. The authors do an excellenct job of identifying and elaborating on key issues, elaborating on related inquiry and elaborating on future considerations for the field.
Mediocrity at its best.......2002-09-12
This book characterizes much of what is wrong with the current way in which text-books are pumped out by authors/academics/publishers to serve as a new yet ultimately qualitatively useless addition to the heap of knowledge in any given field. It is not that the topics presented here are useless, meaningless or anything of the sort, it is simply that the mediocrity with which they are written about and presented to the reader- supposedly a student attempting to learn about these subjects- is apparant on nearly every page.
If the mark of someone who truly understands their field of study is their ability to clearly and easily convey and teach it to others, than many of the contributors to this book do not truly understand their field, certainly not to the extent that they should when being held up as the fore front of their academic field. Read or Buy if you must, but turn to others sources for a better reading and learning experience.

Facilitation - Working with People.......2003-09-26
This group puts together a wonderful message of how to manage group meetings with heart. They give clear examples of activities that can be used to defuse conflict, enhance team effectiveness, and methods to monitor yourself and your team for leaving your baggage behind and achieving group synergy. If yours is a consensus-oriented organization, or you'd like to begin using consensus-based decision making, this is a great book. See also their book specifically for meeting facilitation, "The Art of Facilitation".
A hand book for mastering the dynamics of groups........2000-04-03
The Zen of Groups is a handbook for effective group participation. It achieves this through distinguishing the elements of group dynamics.
The Zen of Groups is written in simple language and makes complex and subtile issues clear and easy to understand. This gives both the beginner and advanced facilitator or group participant alike access to understanding and making a useful difference in the dynamics of any group.
The Zen of Groups also has a section of tools and processes which can be applied to assist groups which are stuck or not acheveing their purpose to move forward.
I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to develop a greater understanding of the the dynamics of groups. I use it all the time as a resource in my practice as a professional facilitator.

Book Description
At last, a book on parliamentary procedure that everyone can understand!
If you've ever had to run a meeting according to parliamentary procedures, you know just how difficult it is to keep track of all the rules, much less follow them. Figuring out what to say and how to say it seems an impossible task.
Robert's Rules in Plain English is the solution to that problem. Not only does it provide you with essential, basic rules in simple, straightforward English, it also includes sample dialogues so you can see exactly how those rules work in practice.
Using summaries, outlines, charts and forms, Robert's Rules in Plain English provides you with all you need to know to run a meeting successfully and to keep it on track.
Customer Reviews:
Reference book.......2007-06-10
Great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about running meetings in an organizational setting. Seems to me lots of meeting attendees think they know how to make motions and take actions but in my experence most meeting attendees do not know the basic rules of order. I use this small easy to understand book monthly as a reference at my Chamber of Commerce. A must have if you serve as a member of any Board of Directors or formal meeting group.
It's a practical guide to Robert's Rules.......2007-03-12
This is a nice book for the money. It's easy to read. It has a good layout.
Roberts Rules made easy.......2005-10-24
I found the book as represented and easy to read and it has all the simple answers that you might need quickly. Reading the full Roberts Rules of Order revised can take time this makes it easy to pick out the simple explanation and answers. Nice to take to the meetings for quick reference.
Roberts Rules in Plain English.......2005-10-21
The book is a decent primer and is certainly more readable than Robert's original book. Of course the original and all of its editions remain an example of very incomprehensible and convoluted language even for its era. However, I have to handle large meetings of very strong-willed, intelligent people, so I found the "Plain English" book not very useful. I need to know the details and complexities of handling important meetings so that I make the right decisions. I will stick with the more sophisticated texts.
Robert's Rules in Plain English.......2005-09-16
Was very disappointed. I thought the book would have contained the entire book of Robert's Rules written in language easily understood by all who read it. The book I received was very brief in dealing with situations that arise during a meeting. It dealt with very few situations.

Book Description
Hardbound. The last two decades have seen exceptionally fast rates of change in every aspect of the telecommunications industry. These include major technology changes and the convergence of the broadcasting, information technology and telecommunications industries. The earlier view of telecommunications as a natural monopoly has now given way to one in which almost all parts are susceptible to some form of competition. Simultaneously, market structure has changed through the replacement of the former monopolistic, vertically integrated telephone companies by a variety of competing firms. These developments have been accompanied by major legislative and regulatory developments, including the passing in the United States of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and the introduction of a large number of new laws and regulations in Europe and elsewhere. The same changes have seen a massive expansion of independent regulatory agencies. This volume provides det

Book Description
The Comprehensive Resource for Designing and Implementing MSG Processes
As organizations strive to make the best possible decisions on critical issues such as compensation, succession planning, staffing, and outplacement, they have increasingly turned to multisource feedback (MSF) for answers. But while use of MSF (or 360-degree) systems has proliferated rapidly, understanding of its complexities has not—and many companies are moving forward with MSF amid a dangerous void of systematic research and discussion on this powerful process.
The Handbook of Multisource Feedback provides the most comprehensive compendium available of current knowledge and practice in MSF. The volume's diverse group of contributors—which includes renowned academics, practitioners, and applied researchers—represents the acknowledged thought leaders in the current and future practice of MSF. Through their multiple perspectives, they identify best practices in the design and implementation of MSF processes and offer key guidelines for decision making when using MSF
The book offers solid grounding in the nuts and bolts of MSF data collection and reporting, providing a process model that leads the reader step-by-step through each phase of an MSF system. It details the developmental and decision-making uses of multisource feedback, describing MSF applications for improving executive development, organization development and change, teams, performance management, personnel decision, and more. And it addresses the realities of system forces that influence MSF processes, including legal, ethical, and cross-cultural issues.
The Handbook of Multisource Feedback will provide an ideal one-stop reference for practitioners, researchers, consultants, and organizational clients who need to understand the challenges of using multisource feedback.
The Editors
David W. Bracken, is director of research consulting at Mercer Delta Consulting group, LLC. His twenty-two years of practice have included multisource feedback systems, individual and organizational assessments, performance management, and management development.
Carol W. Timmreck, is an organization development consultant at Shell Oil Company. She is a cofounder of the Multisource Feedback Forum, a consortium of organizations with active MSF processes.
Allen H. Church, is a principal consultant in management consulting services at PricewaterhouseCoopers, specializing in multisource feedback systems and organizational surveys. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia University.
The complete guide to MSF systems
Handbook of Multisource Feedback offers a comprehensive, multiperspective look at the most current knowledge and practice in multisource feedback (MSF) systems. Drawing from extensive research and practice, a diverse group of distinguished contributors presents the "best practices" in the field and offers pragmatic guidelines for decision making at each step of design and implementation of an MSF process.

Worth the Time.......2005-08-02
The Handbook of Multisource Feedback (MSF) was a full review of the experts in the field. It was recommended to me as the only resource you will need on this topic. I agree, I felt well prepared and informed on MSF after reading this handbook. The expert authors provided guidance for each step of the MSF process. This book is worth the time to read.

One of the best of its kind.......2001-07-06
If I could have just one recent book on my shelf to use as a reference for leadership development, organizational effectiveness, performance feedback and coaching, this would be the one. Each chapter is authoritatively written in clear, approachable language. Reflected in the chapters is a high level of professional and scientific discipline without a hint of academic arrogance. Unlike many edited books having different authors for each chapter, this book is well structured and integrated so as to be readable either from beginning-to-end (probably the best way) or each chapter standing alone. The chapter authors, each a recogonized expert, obviously paid attention to the others' writings. Each author provides a complementary piece of the puzzle while avoiding repetition. This handbook is an excellent example of how a compendium should be edited, and how a team of authors can blend their efforts on a complex subject.

It contains thoughtful articles dealing with the issues of the governance of non-profit organizations and board-staff relations of those non-profits. Also included are over fifty scenarios from real life, short case studies of true situations which touch on most of the problems that volunteers and professionals confront in the course of their working together. Everything is here for a newcomer.......2007-06-08
If you need a definitive guide to management and a handy reference manual, this is absolutely a good way to spend your cash. I've often used this book to assist others in new management positions. It is well indexed and provides a strong visual system of organization that would prove valuable for new managers.
So many pages so little insight.......2005-03-31
This is more a "life coach" book than a management book. It is filled with suggestions that are pretty much common sense. If you are a manager you should already know all this stuff!
NOT JUST FOR MANAGERS, IT'S A HANDBOOK FOR ALL.......2002-12-25
They call it "Successful Manager's Handbook". That is correct. But one thing you should know about this beautifully structured text is that it benefits anyone who seeks knowledge from it. Thus, I would not advise you to wait until you become a 'successful manager' before paying attention to it.
Even if you are the most unsuccessful messenger around, the valuable productivity guidelines in this book would go a long way in defining and improving your status. If diligently applied, the principles of this book would enhance your overall potentials: be it official or domestic.
This book is a handbook for all. It is an asset for matured dealings.
I haven't read this book yet.......2002-10-26
I just picked up a copy in an airport bookstore. I looked at one suggestion, and used it when I got back to the office. My productivity has skyrocketed. I think a lot of the suggestions here are commonsense. But do any of us have enough commonsense?

101 Leadership Actions For Creating And Managing Virtual Teams (101 Leadership Actions)
ASIN: 0873893816 |
Book Description
Geographically dispersed work groups--virtual teams--must work well together without the advantage of meeting face-to-face. This leading-edge book provides strategies for effective team leadership, and includes exercises, case studies, and models to give readers a jump-start on the future of teamwork.
Customer Reviews:
Good for the Tool Kit, but not a Stand-Alone Source.......2000-08-26
I found Hartzler & Henry's book to be a very good set of tools for leaders and members of virtual project teams. The content and exercises it includes are forthright and practical, and flow from good grounded theory and practical experience. It is published by the American Society for Quality, and so has a practical, quality & numbers bent.
The drawback to the book, as I read it, was that it is a specialized book. It addresses project teams. It does not address leadership issues, technology, or ongoing (versus project-based) virtual teaming in any great detail. My partner found the text to be a little simplistic, but I felt that the writing level was clear and appropriate for technical project managers. I would not recommend it as a primer on virtual teams for executives. ;-)
Recommendation: Buy it for your tool kit, but don't make it the only book on virtual teams you use. The authors have done a very good job on the topic they wanted to cover.
an essential for managers, consultants.......2000-01-28
This book does a great job of providing tools and methods that are grounded in solid theory.
