Power Up Your Small-Medium Business: A Guide to Enabling Network Technologies (Network Business)
ASIN: 1587200872 |
Book Description
Reduce costs, improve efficiencies, and focus on your core business
- Leverage your technology infrastructure to save money and virtualize processes.
- Discover the principles behind BPV and the ways in which they can benefit your business.
- Benefit from incremental cost savings, maximizing your business' ROI.
- Learn from real-world case studies that illustrate best practices.
- Understand the solution-provider market, maximizing the impact of your investment.
The dot-com collapse generally discredited the idea of leveraging the Internet to build viable businesses. Many market pundits have decried the concept without examining the underlying dynamics associated with these companies' failures. The truth is, prior business models were built on a flawed business case, not bad technology. In fact, the dot-com bubble created a whole new class of automation that, when applied to conventional businesses, can dramatically improve time to market, competitive response, and customer interaction. This is not virtual business; this is business process virtualization (BPV), and enterprises that don't grasp and apply the principals of BPV will rapidly be rendered obsolete by those that do, being quickly outmaneuvered and displaced in the market.
BPV is the application of networked, intelligent IT infrastructure to enhance skilled personnel, processes, and assets, which enables companies to improve efficiencies, increase competitive advantage, heighten brand awareness, reduce costs, and improve bottom line revenues. Unlike business process automation, BPV focuses on new management approaches for personnel and technology, signaling a fundamental change in the way that we think about business and its objectives.
While reading
The Case for Virtual Business Processes, you will understand why BPV is critical to the long-term viability of your business, while learning how to leverage your intelligent networked infrastructure using leading-edge products and technologies from Cisco Systems.
This volume is in the Network Business Series offered by Cisco Press. Books in this series provide IT executives, decision makers, and networking professionals with pertinent information on today's most important technologies and business strategies.
Customer Reviews:
Review of "The Case for Virtual Business Process".......2004-06-29
The Case for Virtual Business Processes - is an interesting review of the last "cycle" in the world of IT. While the authors make a case for "virtual business process" the text is at its most interesting as it paints a retrospective of what happened during the Dot Com era through interviews with companies that navigated the experience. The arguments are interesting, the case studies are enlightening, and the model is worthy of consideration.
BPV - A Means to Leapfrog the Competition.......2004-05-03
Enterprises that have effective business models are well positioned to execute in the current competitive business landscape. The bursting of the tech bubble to some extent illustrated the point that achieving effective ROI's from IT implementations are no longer driven by just the technology itself. Aligning people, process & technology with the strategic vision of the organization is imperative to succeed.
The book contains a wealth of very timely advice needed by organizations on how technology can become an enabler to business process virtualization. This also falls in line with the current trend within enterprises in maximizing and generating additional value from existing IT investments. The case studies provided in the book provide a wealth of information on how you can achieve competitive edge by breaking the conventional barrier between technology and business.
A must read for CXO's and IT/Business Strategy managers of startups, mid-size, large corporations & service providers, to leapfrog the competition and attain unprecedented heights !!

An intelligent read.......2004-04-29
Mike Jude and Martha Young write an engaging read for those interested in improving business processes in today's complex business environment. If you are a student of business, this slips into your must read column.
A Pioneering New Book! - A Must Read!.......2004-04-05
"The Case For Virtual Business Processes" is a must read for CEOs, CIOs, IT professionals, and all those interested in the key requirements for successful businesses in these hypercompetitive times! This book transforms information technology discussion from "how and wow" to "why" - linking the power of recent technology capabilities to their logical process transformations.
Replacing processes of a given organization with electronic/information infrastructure (BPV) holds great promise of increased mission, flexibility, and profits. However to successfully implement such strategies one needs to master new disciplines.
Ms. Young and Mr. Jude skillfully lead us through those waters discussing concepts like "incrementalization" and "business process valuation." Their book focuses both on a narrative of key concepts and processes and also shows "this new world in action" through case studies. Overall this book is a pioneering effort that explores new fruitful territory for both IT and Strategic Management. It takes the past concepts such as IT return on investment (ROI) to a new level by shifting them to the strategic next step.
I believe the first companies that implement the concepts in this book will be viewing everyone else in the rear view mirror. I can't wait for more books on this subject!

Book Description
Designed to demonstrate how software can support managerial decision-making activities, this brief casebook features 24 cases covering a wide range of functional areas throughout the business, including finance/accounting, HR, production, and information systems. Many of the cases require students to prepare both written and oral presentations on their solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Avoid this book if you can.......2006-12-16
This book should be renamed as "Adventures in Microsoft Office".
The book has almost nothing to do with MIS or managing information systems. Instead it is just a collection of exercises related to Microsoft Office's Excel and Access.
Given the content of the book, it definitely does not justify the exorbitant price...

AKA Coolgen, Composer, Advantage Gen, Allfusion Gen.......2007-03-15
This book goes over IE in general with emphasis on data modeling but I find it has many references to IEF the case tool, aka, Coolgen, Composer, Advantage Gen, Allfusion Gen. I've heard CASE tools are dead but I still see it in large organization. Legacy applications developed using IE still function on a daily basis running distribution, governments and huge financial organization. I think RUP is a child of IE. I've work extensively using both methods. I still prefer IE over RUP. I find IE more intuitive, where RUP goes againist the normal thought process. All RUP analyst should read this book first and learn how to develop IT systems the right way before reinventing the wheel. RUP is not new, just new people, new terminology and not new technology.
Classic reference for information systems management.......2000-05-19
I located this book by accident when searching the stacks at the library and I'm sure glad I did.
Information systems references have mushroomed in the past few years. What I liked about this book is that it provides information that is applicable to any IT/IS project. Even in the age of ecommerce, these basic skills of understanding databases, tables, and relationships is critical.
Illustrations make abstract concepts easy to learn and understand.
Whether you are on a project and getting on the job training or just want to train yourself for your next job, a reference such as this is invaluable.

Book Description
Questions on the business value of information technology (IT), which have been raised by managers and researchers for the last decade, are not settled yet. Firms invest in IT to improve their business performance. However, some firms fail to improve their business performance while others succeed. The overall value of IT varies enormously from firm to firm. Computerization does not automatically create business value, but it is one essential component that should be coupled with organizational changes such as new strategies, new business processes, and new organizational structure. Creating Business Value with Information Technology: Challenges and Solutions aims to solicit the studies that yield significant new insights into the business value of IT.
