Wow, what an eye-opener this book is! I really enjoyed reading this book about human personality and strongly recommend it to everyone. I took the Myers Briggs personality test and learned a bit about personality type in communication and psych classes in college. But I wanted to know more. I wondered how I could figure out the personality types of others and use this information to help understand and communicate with others. I came across this book on Amazon and I think I purchased it because of all the great reviews. So I thought I should contribute a great review too. If you only buy one book on personality type I recommend this one. It's a great intro to type and it's very easy to understand. I refer back to it all the time. I also recommend "Just Your Type : Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type" by the same authors, which matches all 16 personality types with each other, explains how type affects couple's interactions and suggests potential sources of conflict. Also very interesting. I would definitely purchase other books by these authors.

This book presents a basic do-it-yourself speed reading course in six chapters laid out as follows:

1: The Speed Reading Aventure Begins (a pep talk)
2: Understanding Why We Read Slowly--And How to Change (a little theory)
3: Learn to Jog, not Walk, through Your Reading (the basics)
4: Learn to Run, not Jog ... (adding some bells and whistles)
5: Learn to Sprint, not Run ... (kicking it into overdrive)
6: Understanding and Remembering What You Read (a presentation of the "Fistnote" technique for retention)
Appendix A: A syllabus for a company in-service on speed reading.

Each chapter gives a clear, concise how-to on the performance of the technique and exercises to perfect the techniques. As the student gains skill and confidence with each technique, the following chapter presents more advanced techniques.

Geared for the busy professional, and an excellent expenditure of funds for anyone wanting to increase reading speed. This is the second speed reading book I've read. "Remember Everything You Read" was the first. Previously I read about 2-3 books per week, mostly nonfiction. I'm reading one per day now. I'll probably burn out on that pace in a couple of weeks, but so far it's been great.

FOOTNOTE: After about a month, I burned out on the rapid pace of reading a book a day. Someone once told me that when you speed read, you "coil up with a good book," and that is an accurate assessment. I'm still reading much faster than before, but slowing down some has improved my enjoyment of reading.

Some of the items explained in the book might seem corny, and you might not want to do them. The thing is that if you carry out the instructions of the book you will develop the ability of improving your reading speed. It's all about practice, without it you will not improve your reading skills or speed.

I have only just begun my quest for practical speed reading techniques, but already I have seen dramatic improvements (at least doubled my previous reading speed).

This book makes it easy for a motivated individual to get started at reading faster.

I gained the most out of the 3rd and 4th chapter and got very little out of the others.

In the 3rd chapter he identifies the major hindrances to fast reading. In the 4th chapter he offers a technique to help overcome some of the problems mentioned in the previous chapter.
Those two chapters opened me up to a whole new approach to reading.

The next evening I went on to read "The Evelyn Wood 7-Day Speed Reading & Learning Program" by Stanley D. Frank and I highly recommend it as a follow-up to Moidel's book. In fact, I felt like Moidel's book was a condensed and slightly modified version of the Evelyn Wood Program.

I always used to label myself as a slow reader - under 250wpm.
I easily doubled my reading speed within the first 2 days alone after reading Moidel's book (with practice - not his drills, though - instead I just practiced reading in groups of words without vocalizing). I am reading even faster now that I incorporated some of what I learned from the Evelyn Wood Program (the book).

Of course speed varies with the material being read, but what I'm most excited about is that my approach to reading has changed drastically and with it my speed has increased dramatically.

My biggest downfall in the past was reading word-by-word (focusing on each and every word rather than grouping words) and vocalizing. (Now I realize it's not necessary to read "word-by-word" and I realize to what extent word-by-word reading as well vocalizing slows one down).

After reviewing several books about speed reading --some of them very expensive--, I found it. And I strongly recommend it. The book allows you to understand and to train separately three different dimensions of reading:

- Speed, understanding and recalling.

Contrasting with another "speed reading in 5 minutes" offers, this book does not sell you miracles: you need to practice and practice to speed up your reading skills.

as a minus, I personally found the chapter about Internet useless. Do we need to read a complete chapter to learn that "Much of Internet reading is prereading or scanning"?
I don't think so.

If I would recommend a book to start with speed reading, this will be the first one.

I'll start off by saying that if you want to become a proficient speed reader, it takes work and effort. Having said this, Moidel's book is the way to go about it. The book outlines the most common hindrances to speed reading and then illustrates how to conquer them. Within an hour I doubled my reading speed by using some of the basic pointers.

To get full use of this book, you must dedicate time to practising the numerous drills that are offered. With perseverence, you should be pushing 1000 words per minute with excellent comprehension. This book is fairly small and offers lots of no nonsense advice to get you on your way to speed reading.

This book covers the basics but you have to look hard to find them. This book came out in 1998 so it is a bit dated especially with the new training software that is available now. Reading pages in a book and timing yourself is a pain. I would say go with some newer software like Speed Reader-X or Ace Reader (just search amazon to find them) which is much easier to use and has newer updated information.

I will make this review concise for you slow readers, who have yet to learn the magic powers of speed reading.
Throw away all you think you know about reading faster. Many people do not start a speed reading course because they think they will not enjoy reading faster. YOU WILL ENJOY READING FASTER. People do not begin a speed reading course because they think that they will not be able to comprehend what they read. HOW ABOUT 80-90%+ COMPREHENSION?
I have studied various methods and techniques of speed reading. I have taken the Howard Berg course, the Photo Reading course, and have read several other books about speed reading. I have also taken the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics course (which this book is heavily based off of seeing that the author is the former director) Nothing has helped me more than this book. This book gives you a step by step (1 chapter a day) time line and drills so that within 6 weeks you too can be reading 3-8 times faster (750-2000wpm+ some 5000+!) WITH GREATER COMPREHENSION AND RECALL. This book teaches you how to read everything (similar to Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics course). It teaches you how to read fiction, nonfiction, text books, newspapers, as well as correspondence, and mail. One thing that I do have to add as a sidenote: if you are more of a visual or auditory learner i recommend the Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics, and Evelyn Woods Learning Dynamics courses (very cheap on ebay) only because I know that it may be difficult for ADHD prone individuals like myself to have the executive function to sit down and do the drills everyday. It actually took me over 2 years before i finally sat down and did the drills and went through the book, but I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY I DID. My comprehension and love for reading has gone up dramatically.
STUDENTS: BUY THIS BOOK FOR YOUR SELF AND FOR YOUR GRADES
PARENTS: BUY THIS BOOK SO YOU CAN READ MORE BOOKS AND GIVE A GREATER EXAMPLE TO YOUR CHILDREN, AND ALSO SO YOU CAN READ MORE BOOKS ON PARENTING AND BE BETTER PARENTS

Picked this book up with an interest in increasing my reading speed, but was disappointed when the book turned out to be one big ad for the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Courses. Most of the book was devoted to informing the reader how fast and efficiently they could study, and how successful their courses are. There was very little instruction and what was there was vague. The book ended up being of negligible help to my reading speed.

I read this book because it claimed to help increase reading by 50%. I thought that I was a strong reader. I read about 230 words per minute. Well, after reading this book, I read about 250 words per minute. 20 words wasn't worth it!

Reading this book feels like talking to a used car salesman. Stanley Frank spends as much time in this (very thin) volume giving anecdotes on how wonderful Evelyn Wood speed reading is as he does giving any useful information about how to read faster. The book does give some rapid reading techniques, but fails to link them into a curriculum for actually training oneself to increase reading speed.

By contrast, I found Peter Kump's "Breakthrough Rapid Reading" (recommended by another Amazon Reviewer) to be quite helpful. Kump's book mixes the theory of Evelyn wood with comprehensive exercises to put these ideas into practice. Kump also gives the reader a way to record and track progress through the course.

The concepts of rapid reading are not difficult, the challenge lies in putting them into practice. Save your $7, skip Frank, and buy a book that will actually help you learn to read faster.

Amazon as sells this book under the title "Remember Everything You Read", it is the exact same book word for word. This one is hardcover and the other is paperback. From reading the description for the one about it being adapted from "Remember Everything You Read", I thought I was getting two different books.

Unfortunately, returning it isn't worth the money.

I ran into this book while sorting out my personal library. I had bought it in the late 80s when I had just moved upward into general management. I also remembered having bought several copies of it to be given away to business associates of mine.

      Within the first half-hour of opening Power Reading, I found ways to save time on the endless documents I have to read each day as part of my job. Thank you, Phyllis Mindel. Time translates to money and your book is worth its price ten times over. I had thought I was an efficient reader prior to picking up this user-friendly book, well-organized book, but I found dozens of ways to increase my productivity with Power Reading.

      Although I fully subscribe and practice the techniques expounded in Ms. Mindell's work and painfully learned over 20 years, I found the book highly overpriced for its content. Many magazine and newspaper articles are printed on page after page, pushing the book over 200 pages. This is pricey stuff ... This is not a "speed reading" technique rather an effective reading management system (prioritizing, and then information gleaning techniques). The book is 1/5 the price of many "speed reading" courses or tapes but 2x the price of the other books. 20/20 hindsite I would have rather picked up some of her source material, "How to Read A Book", and "The Elements of Style".

      As an adult and former teacher who reads widely and takes courses,I require an intelligent approach to efficient reading:I`ve got to get through huge amounts of books,articles,journals,and email with good comprehension.Power Reading overcomes the shortcomings of every reading system I`ve ever seen.The unusual "structural" approach holds the key to speeding through any kind of material and understanding just what you need.The excellent chapter on "Reading in the Twenty-first Century" gives really practical guidelines for on-line reading.Every professional and student should read this fine book.

      Some of the basic concepts in this book are good: scan, skim, and then preread. But this overpriced book (a thin hardback that is priced like a college textbook) overcomplicates reading. The author analyzes the reading process like your high school English teacher who taught you how to open a book so you didn't break its back. Most people don't want to follow a specific series of steps for each category of reading material-newspapers, trade journals, reports, etc. The author puts down speed reading, apparently convinced that people have all the time in the world to read. She evens condones moving your lips when you read. There are better books for improving your reading.

      The in-basket is an easy and essential method for analyzing your reading needs and applying the methods needed to meet those needs. The four step prereading program can reduce any large reading assignment and you'll get through it with higher comprehension. I have taken a speed reading class and read many speed reading books but none seemed to stick with me. I'm in an MBA program and the reading assignments are very time consuming. Power Reading helps me get through the assingments quicker and with a much better understanding of what I have read. I feel smarter!
