Customer Reviews:
Impressive customer service !.......2005-03-16
I e-mailed the publisher to ask for an update of a celebrity address. He was fast with an answer. He also mentioned he has started a new service to autograph collectors. He will answer any question on the subject of autoghaph collecting for FREE!
I will use the e-mail address for finding out autograph prices, how and where to buy and sell autographs plus anything else I can think of. A great offer!
Here's The List of Celebrity Autographs.......2005-02-10
I have known David Moore for many years and he is the only author of celebrity directories that uses and updates his address list on daily basis. For me, here is a list of celebrities who I have contacted and received autographs through the mail. They are: Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Gates, Roy Clark, Gillian Anderson, Nicholas Cage, Bill Cosby, James Garner, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Gary Trudeau, Olivia Newton-John, Brandi Chastain, James Watson, Sandra Day O'Connor, Harmon Killebrew, George Bush, Betty Ford, Jimmy Carter, Leann Rhimes, Muhammad Ali, Angela Landsbury, Reba McEntire, Jay Leno, Faith Hill, Tommy John, Tom Hanks, Michael Eisner, Nolan Ryan, Tony Bennet, Colin Powell, Robert Duvall, John Mellencamp, Whoopi Goldberg and many others. If you want excellent results and great customer service, I highly recommend David Moore's book.
This Author is an Expert.......2005-01-14
After I purchased this book I contacted the author, Mr. Moore to ask him about collecting autographs by index cards or by photographs. He was prompt and very informative with his reply. If you want questions answered about auotgraph collecting, get in touch with him, you will be happy you did.
Amazing book.......2005-01-11
The reader and reviewer who wrote this book is the ULTIMATE has it right. This book is everything an autograph collector needs. Besides the thousands of celebrity addresses, this book backs up the names with celebrity facts. If you want a complete history of actors it is there under the website named in the book, if you want other facts to write to the celebrity about it is there. (the book has celebrity hobbies, celebrity charities, celebrity birthdays, celebrity hangouts and a lot of useful facts about celebrities)This is the only celebrity directory I will ever need. The price of this book is well worth it!!
A Huge List of Celebrity Addresses.......1999-11-20
I am an autograph collector and I was happy to see how complete this book is. I collect astronauts who have walked on the moon, hi-tech business people such as Bill Gates, movie actors like Tom Hanks and baseball sluggers like Sammy Sousa and Mark McGuire. They are in this books with thousands more. It is well organized and I liked the extra features of sample letters and questions & answers about autograph collecting. It is a very good reference for autograph collectors.

Customer Reviews:
Keep this reference by your side to help your data tell its story.......2006-09-10
I think anyone who solves serious problems by analyzing data will want to own a copy of this book. Being able to organize data into the right visual image can often make no less a difference than that between seeing the answer to the problem vs. getting lost in the complexity and variation in the data.
This is a uniquely comprehensive encyclopedia of graphical techniques with just enough detail on each technique to help you choose the right one for each situation.
There are no long, detailed explanations of principles. What you get are a few illustrations of each type of graph, with a general description of the strengths of that particular technique and several variations to show how it could be applied to different situations which share some central similarity.
One review criticized the alphabetic listing of the techniques, which is a reasonable critique in general. However I think the weakness is mitigated significantly by the way the graphs are grouped together into broad categories once you get to those. The alphabetically listed individual headings are mainly for cross-reference. It seems clear to me that the book wasn't intended to be read from front to back alphabetically, but that the reader would have a rough idea what sort of graph they needed, would start with the heading for that category, and then when neccessary, would refer to the cross-referenced section alphabetically.
In any case, I found it useful to place sticker-tabs on the pages for the main categories of graph that I care most about, and use those tabs as my starting place for choosing the right graphic. There are about ten broad categories of graphs I usually care most about, such as bar, area, column, line, and point graphs, control charts, statistical distribution charts, and time/activity charts. In addition there are about another dozen or so big categories of topics about graphs in general, such as choosing the right aspect ratio, the right font, and the right scale.
Don't get the wrong idea here, none of these topics is covered in great detail, this book is wonderful *index* to visual techniques for showing data for operational purposes but it is not a detailed how-to or an academic treatise on the individual techniques. Also, the book is not intended for creating flashy presentation or marketing graphics, nor does it cover argument maps, truth maps, or any other single sort of conceptual maps in any great detail (although it does touch on the topic in general).
A welcome bonus is that the bibliography is particularly well selected, and not just a list of popular books on graphs. Some of his references are difficult to get and I suspect that some of these sources may even out of print, but some of them like Tukey's work and William Cleveland's texts are well worth searching for.
This is an indispensible encyclopedia of operational information graphics for helping you to help data tell its own story in its clearest and most revealing light, whether you are trying to manage the quality of a process or track down the source of a problem. The examples are extremely well chosen and representative, and the explanations are concise and helpful in a way that lets you use this as a quick reference and not just as a textbook.
excellent reference guide for graphs/charts.......2005-10-14
this is an excellent book if you are working with different types of graphs or charts. we use it as the bible while programming gui tools to create graphs. if you are looking to make meaningful graphs, this book can clue you in to the different types of graphs that will best illustrate your data.
A great source for graphical ideas........2004-11-17
This book is 400+ pages, and I would estimate it contains
5-10 graphics examples per page. If you've got "writer's block"
and can't think of a new way to graphically present your data,
then this is the book for you. Just thumb through it until
something catches your eye, and then read the details about
that kind of graph. Maybe not 100% 'comprehensive' as the
title implies ... but pretty darn close! ;)
For people like me who have to do a lot of different kinds
of graphs, this book is a great resource to have on your shelf.
Alphabetical arrangement not very useful.......2004-10-15
Three stars is perhaps harsh, but this book would be much more useful if it had been structured differently. Open this book
and on the first page the entries start rolling: "Abscissa", "Abscissa axis", "Abstract graph", etc. Most readers will be
exhausted before reaching the letters D or E...
Having compiled this exhaustive list of information graphics, one would expect the author to provide some kind of an
overview, guidelines, or some useful grouping of the different types of graphics. The closest thing to such insights is
found in the brief preface (pp. 4-5) and the "Graph" entry (pp. 164-177).
I have to disagree with the reviewers describing this book as helpful "to select the best graphic or chart to convey
information in the most efficient way". When you "turn to this book and and pick the most appropriate graphic type", which
alphabetical entries are you going to look up? And which entries are you going to miss?
This book does serve a purpose as a catalogue and a 4 page bibliography, but the best books for learning how to create
informative and efficient graphics are those written by Edward Tufte and William Cleveland.
Encyclopedic Work About Data Presentation.......2004-07-27
This is not a how-to-book. Harris has written a definitive book about data presentation. Topics are organized alphabetically and cross-referenced. Almost every entry is accompanied by illustrations and sometime many of them. I have other books that describe data presentation but they are incomplete compared with Harris's book. I have not seen such an array of presentation illustrations in one place before. Some of the illustrations show plots that I frequently use with interesting additions; for example, the diagonal in pairwise scatter plots typically names variables, Harris has an illustration with histograms for each variable on the diagonal. What a great idea! Almost everyone knows how to construct pie charts. Harris's discussion of pie charts is six pages long. After a brief introduction, he gives a description and terminology, general characteristics, methods to incorporate descriptive and quantitative information, reference angles, showing changes over time, varying the size of circles proportional to the overall value of the data, highlighting slices of the pie, improving legibility, grouping sections of the chart, using pie charts instead of histograms, encodeing additional quantitative data, adding depth, overlapping pie charts, decographs, belt charts, and cirlce graphs. Who could have imagined that lowly pie charts were so versatile and communicative? Some have dogmatically asserted, "Pie charts are a very bad way of displaying information." Although I generally agree, Harris has given me much to think about and I will not be so averse to using them in the future.

Publishing Defined - A thru Z.......2006-11-07
If you have questions about the publishing industry, you will be hard-pressed to find a better resource than Dan Poynter's book, The Book Publishing Encyclopedia. This alphabetical resource guide is filled with facts, figures, tips, and tactics.
Any resource guide filled with so much information is bound to motivate a writer to continue striving for the exciting status of publication. It becomes a matter of absorbing enough information and doing enough research about all the available publishing options to make the right decision. Not all authors are destined for Random House, but that doesn't mean they have to remain unpublished. There are alternatives! Whether you are seeking an independent press, a mainstream publisher, or the convenience of a turn-key publisher, this book defines the terms you should know. - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified
Book Publishing Encyclopedia--Dan Poynter.......2006-11-05
Loads of useful information for the self-publisher/author. I would have
preferred to have it in chapter form. That would have made it more readable.
Excellent summary.......2006-08-30
Poynter, as always, knows his subject: Self-publishing. This book hits all the high points in an easy-to-access format.
Mr. Poynter, I Have Just One Question . . . Now Can I Ask a Second One?.......2006-07-29
Dan Poynter has been showing new writers the ropes to creating book and publishing them for almost 30 years. If you're totally new to the subject, you should be sure to read the 15th edition of his classic, Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual. But if you think you have just one question, you'll find it easier to start with Dan Poynter's Book Publishing Encyclopedia. Presented in alphabetical order, you'll quickly locate key ideas, tips and resources to implement what interests you.
I thought that this book was so well done that I read it cover to cover . . . and kept learning things that I didn't know that I didn't know . . . even though I've written four books and am in the process of finishing a fifth. As you can imagine in this Internet age, Dan can send you to lots of great Web sites (many of which are ones that he has developed).
Every new writer should have both the self-publishing manual and the book publishing encyclopedia. Every experienced writer should have the book publishing encyclopedia. It's great!
To give you a sense of how thorough this encyclopedia is, the references for Amazon take up 6 1/2 pages . . . include many bits of information that I suspect less than 1 percent of all authors know. You'll find ways to contact Amazon, how to use book reviews on Amazon to be more successful, what the sales rankings mean in terms of sales, tracking your book's history at Amazon, how to use Booksurge to be even more successful at Amazon, changing titles, checking prices with a cell phone, e-books, getting your cover image up faster on your Amazon sales page, large print book publishing at Amazon, keeping in stock, other ways to sell collectible books at Amazon and tracking your sales.
Can you afford not to know those things? I thought not!
Good self publishing reference.......2006-06-19
This book contains some of the same information as Don Poynter's other book, "Self Publishing Manual". However, its all organized alphabetically for easy reference. This book works very well when used in conjunction with "Self Publishing Manual", as it allows you to quickly review the piece of information that you know you read from the manual. A useful book.

The modern conundrum: while the art of letter writing is fast extinguishing, the need for expressive, impressive, appropriate letters is as great as ever. The result? A mortifying amount of miserable missives that sadly miss the mark. E-mail informality is all very well for one's sister in Toledo or one's colleague three cubicles down, but when one needs to promote a product or raise funds, seek a job or request a favor, effectively complain, apologize, or reprimand, or send a letter of condolence, the typically confident and competent achiever gets noodly in the knees. Write a thank-you letter? The prospective correspondent is suddenly busy cleaning his or her desk and organizing the office files.
All you really need is a template to show you the way, and that's where Harold Meyer's Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters excels. There are 981 letters covering most every business or personal occasion, organized in 600 categories, and followed by a comprehensive index. From Declining Requests (subdivided into "Invitations," "Applications for Credit," and "Donations," among others) and Requesting Favors to Sympathy, Apology, and Thank-You notes, Meyer shows an array of approaches, discusses effective techniques for various intended results, and instructs you on which tone to pursue, depending on whom the letter is going to and what you're trying to achieve. The encyclopedia won't actually write the letter for you or affix the stamp, but it provides proven formats to help structure your thoughts, and smooth starter and closer sentences--typically the hardest to write--to jump-start your communication and end with style. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Lifetime Encyclopedia Of Letters.......2006-12-24
I am a proud owner of this book and recently ordered one second hand on Amazon for a girlfriend of mine, whom I got tired of writing letters for. I have recommended it to many friends who assume I'am a certified paralegal because of my letter writing skills. this book is a must have for anyone who needs to learn how to formulate a letter correctly.
Mediocre.......2005-03-06
This book is mediocre. I'd expect a book on "letter writing" to provide examples of unusual and creative letters; letters that would catch and leave a fresh impression on the reader, but it's not the case.
The professional section is OK, even though the letters are boring, dull, and predictable. The personal section is simply dreadful: tactless and unimaginative. Letters of sympathy and condolences are some of the worse ones.
I'd not have bought it if I'd have taken a closer look at it.
If you're already a good letter-writer, then this book is a good tool to provoke your OWN writing. If you're not, look for another guide.
For a small business owner not the average consumer..........2003-11-27
I purchased this book thinking that the author provided a voice to capture my thoughts when dealing with merchants. Why I ever doubted my ability to write my experience with a product or services, I do not know.
I agree that this book provides a template. If you use a Wordprocessing software application it already comes with one.
I would not recommed this as a purchase for the average consumer.
This book is written more for the small business owner, who for example, is attempting to collect bad debts or negotiating for better pricing on business services.
As a template, THE BOOK is very useful.......2003-06-26
The Lifetime Encyclopedia of Letters has come in handy for me on several occasions (both business and personal). The book itself is broken down into categories, and within these are outlines, models, indexes, open/closing sentences, and example letters for each category.
The "How To Do It" outline provides you with a step-by-step process for each letter. This helps to keep your letter focused. The explanations in the outline is brief, and somewhat vague, but if you follow through with the model letter, you can see what direction your letter would take.
There are also suggestions for opening and closing sentences. This will help jog your inspiration. I never used any of the suggested sentences, but it did give me a clear idea of how I should open and close my letters. Many times, hesitation has been a result of not knowing how to start... this book helped solve that problem for me.
The best feature of this book is the variety of letters. Some are more aggressive than others, and this can be tailored to what you are trying to "sell" or say. The contrasts in letter presentation gives you a chance to choose the most appropriate letter for those who will read it.
The personal letter section is useful for the more "delicate" correspondence (compliments, reprimand, gifts, etc...). This book guided me with proper etiquette through some very nerve-wracking letters. It also provided me with the confidence to write more letters for appropriate situations. I have actually received compliments from letter receivers!
This book is meant to be used throughout your lifetime, for business and personal uses. My copy is pretty old, and I still use it. The letters I write using the encyclopedia are absolutely my own. Because I view this book as a template of standards, I merely adapt it to suit my own personal style and needs. I recommend it to anyone who needs to write a letter and wants to do it right with the best results.
A Good Reference Item.......2001-12-14
I'm confused by the previous reviews. It seems like the objections are to the CD-ROM...our copy didn't come with one. I work in a library, and when I have trouble writing a letter or more often coming up with wording for a condolence card (I'm hopeless at this) I run to the stacks for this book! I find it most useful for appropriate ideas not necessarily a complete letter. If I don't find the subject matter I need I plunder other letters for the right words...sometimes just a sentence can get me started. I've recommended this book to other staff members who have found useful information in it. I just ordered a copy for our professional reference collection!!! This book is a great resource, but perhaps not the answer to ALL letter writing ills.

Of the many media used by companies to bring attention to their products or services, none seem to have had the overall appeal of porcelain enamel. The process of creating porcelain signs is an art in itself, and the influx of new collectors in the market place attests to porcelain enamel advertising's beauty. Few collectibles are made with such long-lasting properties or have been found in such diversity. With hundreds of full color photographs, this new book will give you an idea of the beauty and diverse graphics that can be found in this very collectible area of Americana. Discover the powerful graphics that were so effective on these signs and see the wide range of advertisers who used the medium. The book is divided by manufacturing design with one chapter devoted to gasoline pump signs, a particularly popular area of collecting. Informative captions include a description, measurements, and the approximate age of the sign. This is simply the best illustrated guide to porcelain enamel advertising ever published, and an important reference to collectors and historians alike.

The
Encyclopedia of Public Relations explores the evolution of the Public Relation field, with examples from history describing events, changing practices, and the key figures who developed and expanded the profession. This two-volume set is the first and most authoritative compilation of the subject and is a must-have for any library serving patrons in business, communication, and journalism.
The encyclopedia explores key challenges facing the profession of public relations and its practitioners, such as earning the trust and respect of critics and the general public. Opinions about PR are as diverse as the issues addressed by the people and organizations in the field. One good example is ethics (decision-making, creation of meaning, etc.), and the popular notion that many PR practitioners use their skills to deliberately misinform the public. In contrast, public relations professionals also have an integral role in social responsibility, such as notifying the public of climate or public health concerns. These volumes go into great depth about such ethical policies and challenges. In fact, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) operates under a specific code of ethics—full details of which are included in an appendix.
The
Encyclopedia of Public Relations has also been put together with the knowledge that PR does not exclusively reside in the United States. Major international figures, research, and organizations play a key part in the project. Led by renowned editor Robert Heath (University of Houston), with advisory editors and contributors from around the world, this set is designed to reach a wide array of readers who can serve as opinion leaders for improving the image and ethics of the practice. It is intended to be an honest but positively biased treatment of public relations, with an appreciative view of what public relations is and does.
