successful manager's review.......2006-07-16
i gave this book 3 stars because of the size. although, it is very helpful in many ways, i feel that the writers of this book could have condensed a bit more. other than the size i feel some of the page space was wasted on repetition. that is basically it.
Good Reference manual, not textbook.......2006-03-28
First of all, as the name indicates, this book is a handbook. Merriam Webster defines a handbook as "a concise reference book; manual"
For a manual, I have to give this book high marks - it covers a whole gamut of topics / competencies - enough to assist those who consciously want to improve their professional and leadership skills. The language is easy to understand. The only prerequisite is to be in a work-place for a few years so as to appreciate each competency.
Pros:
(1) Compendium of competencies. Most likely, nothing has been missed!
(2) A person who is keen on gaining skill in a particular competency such as "Manage Change" or "Establish Trust" can quickly gather insights into what behaviors and skills he/she must practice or develop.
(3) Easy to understand.
Cons:
(1) No pictures or maps or schematics shown.
(2) No case studies or examples presented.
(3) Not concise. For example, there are 28 chapters in the seventh edition (2004). At a high level, one should be able to identify less than ten key competencies, with each having additional sub-topics. For example, it is easier on the reader to have one chapter on "Foster open Communication" with sub sections of "Write effectively", "Listen attentively", "speak with Impact", etc. rather than have a chapter each. A person solely relying on this book will have difficulty summarizing key leadership qualities. (Imagine organizing 28 chapters in the mind!).
(4) Systematic methodology for skill development not presented.
All this makes for dry reading. But then, if you look upon this book as a reference manual and not as a textbook, you might develop some compassion for the authors!
Here is how I used this book:
(1) Start a personal development plan (consult web, books or leader).
(2) Understand the competencies required for your profession.
(3) Self-assess on the competencies, assigning a skill level of "Development," "Working," or "Advanced".
(4) Have a competent leader who knows you (e.g. your manager) assess your skills. Compare notes.
(5) Pick the top 2-3 competencies where improvement is needed.
(6) Refer to those chapters in this book which correspond to these identified competencies.
(7) Summarize these chapters in your own words as you develop insights.
(8) Periodically look up summary and use these techniques during your waking hours - home or work - until they are internalized.
(9) Repeat this exercise once in 2-3 years.
In summary, this book is a good reference manual for improving one's professional skills, but should not be used as a text book.
Outstanding Reference Tool.......2006-03-03
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (3/06)
This book is an outstanding reference tool for supervisors, managers, and executives. As a long time manager who dealt with organizational issues, growth, personnel matters, finance, and political influences, and one who teaches undergraduate and graduate school courses in management and leadership, I have experienced most of these issues. The author has done a remarkable job in the detail and accuracy of the work. The work is clear and understandable and organized in such as way as to allow easy access to information. To find such a compendium of information in one book instead of many is an additional benefit. Content is also ratified by the collective skills sets the authors bring.
I highly recommend this book as a desk reference for anyone in a leadership or management role, and highly recommend it for anyone aspiring to the job. The comprehensive nature of the material in the book provides the foundation for new managers. In addition, the reference material leads readers to many other sources, reducing the need for Internet surfing trying to find information, or visiting the local library. As a graduate school faculty member I would also state for the record that this would be a great textbook. The book is written by practitioners who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. This book is a must read. Well done to all the authors - you have provided a book any manager, supervisor, or teacher should have.

Excellent content, very dry style.......2006-01-20
The content of the book is excellent. The authors have created a compendium of the knowledge and behaviors needed for a manager to be successful. One would be hard-pressed to find this much of content in one volume, at the price this book is sold at.
The bad news is that all of the content is in endless streams of paragraphs or bullet points. The total absence of a change in pace (no anecdotes, case studies, sidebars, pictures) makes this a very dry read. The book could be significantly enlivened by the addition of more diagrams that visually illustrate the principles being described.
To make the best use of this material, learn to Mind Map (see Buzan's The Mind Mapping book). As you read through the material, distill the content into mind maps. Continually refer to those mind maps as you practice the behaviors suggested by the authors.
In summary, the content is first-rate, the presentation is lacking.

Of Limited Use to Defense Industry.......2006-09-12
While this book contains a great deal of useful information on team dynamics and tools, it does not cover the Integrated Process and Product Development (IPPD) framwork which is the basis of co-located Integrated Product Teams (IPTs). Due to this omission, its applicability to the defense industry is very limited.
Dog-earred, highlighted, and still going strong!.......2006-08-27
Like all good improvement tools, this guide for teams has evolved over the years. I began with the original, moved to Edition Two and now have Edition Three. Along with THE LEADER'S HANDBOOK, the TEAM HANDBOOK is probably the most useful and used book I own. Whether you are leading a project team, facilitating your own workgroup, or just want to be a better team member yourself, THIS is the tool you need. Every chapter is jammed pack with helpful tips, traps to avoid, notes and templates to help you be successful. Invest in this book, invest in YOURSELF!

Small Business Must Have for your Tool Box.......2007-08-31
I can't say enough good things about this extremely useful tool. Duct Tape Marketing (or as Brian Small and I refer to it as "DTM") breaks the paradigm of what most small business owners "think" marketing is all about.
I've consulting small businesses in the way of marketing for years as well as worked to keep my own business(es) on track with marketing. Now it's as though I've taken a good tool in my toolbox and turned it into a hyper-drive power tool.
If you're thinking about starting a small business or have a well established small business then this book will make any time you spend on marketing much more effective.
This book was recommended to me by my friend and business com padre by Brian Small (www.briansmall.com) and in the last month I've recommended to many other small business owners. If you don't take time to work "on" your business then you're going to fall short of your potential. Make it a priority to read this book in a 4 week period.

A Good Book on Marketing and Worth the Price.......2007-08-06
Although this book is not in my top ten of marketing books, it is still a good book with some useful ideas. There are many keys to successful marketing. Unfortunately, if one or more keys is missing, the total marketing effort can be wasted.
This book covers many of the keys. I wish it showed better how the pieces fit together to make a complete sale, but it does a good job on the keys it does cover. If you are a small business owner, read the book and use the ideas. You will see positive results.
One of the best books on marketing that a small business owner can read.......2007-08-03
To say "Duct Tape Marketing" is a great book is an understatement. As an entrepreneur who has founded two small companies, I found John Jantsch's approach to help customers to know, like and trust you more to be intuitive, yet very powerful.
He got my undivided attention from the point he proposed having you first identify your ideal clients (as early as in page 5) and asking you to fire about 20 percent of your past customers, if they no longer fit into the picture of your current business. Now THAT makes sense and it is SO powerful: I could recall the occasions when I was spending time pursuing projects that were not a good fit for the goals of our company, but we still pursued them ("Hey! It's business!"). Since I read that section, I've felt more comfortable not pursuing distracting projects.
He then proceeds to walk you through the discovery and delivery of your marketing message in a way that speaks to the heart of those ideal customers you identified early on. The rest of the book is packed with tactics to get that message in front of your target audience and help them contact you and refer you.
These easily are the best 300 pages I have read since I became a small business.
Love it!.......2007-07-23
This book has WONDERFUL, thorough advice for the small business. It really gets the creative juices flowing. I highly recommend this book.
Want More Customers? Then Read This Book!.......2007-07-17
Regardless of what you already know about marketing a small to mid-size business, this book is for you. It's a powerful tool that focuses on your specific marketing needs and your specific capabilites. John Jantsch doesn't merely tell you what to do, he explains how and why to do it. The information is clear, concise, and surprisingly thorough. John covers a broad spectrum of important marketing issues, starting from the basics of defining your customer, to a well-written summary about the power and value of effective Internet marketing. If you're smart, you'll read this book and then keep it handy as an ongoing reference tool.

Great resource.......2007-09-29
Just getting into the book selling biz. I have been going through cancer and now need a job where I can tailor my hours around all of my doctor's appointments. I like both this book and the Stephen Windwalker books. Very good information without alot of extraneous stuff.
Great Book.......2007-09-25
This a great book to help those interested in selling books online. It is very bold of Mr. Weber to enpower the competition. But it is a very smart book that will help those motivated to help themselves. I recommend it to all interested in getting online selling books.
The Home-Based Book Store.......2007-09-17
Very good book for the person who is contemplating entering this type of business. Seemed to cover most of the bases. If he didn't and I do actually go into business, I guess I'll find out pretty quickly. But, overall, since I've read a few other books dealing with this topic, I feel the author covered the subject matter well and I would recommend the book to others.
AWESOME.......2007-08-27

Tamara works her way though all the steps for bringing a product to market. As the title would suggest her target audience is female but as a male I also found that it was very informative. Tremendous aid for understanding how to turn your new product idea into a successful business.......2006-06-10
I launched a new product line several years ago - learning a lot along the way. I am getting ready to launch a new line of products and decided to read this book. It was a tremendous resource! So many of the answers that I had to dig for and learn the hard (and expensive) way - are contained here in one easy to read book. I highly endorse it. It is also very motivational (as you read the stories of other people) that decided to take action and turn their idea into a successful business. Well worth the price. Very well written.
Informative and inspiring.......2006-03-12
Mom inventors wanting more info on what's involved in bringing a product to market will want to read this book. The book offers practical advice on researching your market, creating your product prototype, protecting your idea, manufacturing your product, and bringing your product to market.
What I like best about the book is that it features case studies and practical advice from real-life mom inventors.
There are also lots of helpful website links and other helpful resources at the back of the book -- very helpful for mom inventors who wish to do some additional research.
This is a terrific and inspiring book that will be very helpful to mom inventors at any stage of bringing an invention to market -- conception right through delivery.
Amazing, Informational & A Must Have.......2005-11-18
This book does it all for anyone wanting to create/invent a product that they hope to bring to market. Tamara shares in a very easy-to-read format her experiences, her expertise and saves the rest of us lots of time, energy and money. Her mistakes made along the way combined with her successes that continue to grow provide the reader with a wealth of knowledge about researching, developing, patenting, protecting, marketing (and more!) an idea/invention.
Pair this with the CD sets created by her dynamic and resourceful company mominventors.com, and you will walk away with knowledge you could not even get in business school! I wish I had read this three years ago when I first started my product line development. Thanks Tamara for sharing so freely and so generously to save the rest of us time and money!!!

A must for any working therapist!.......2006-03-08
Written specifically for bodyworkers, Business Mastery is simply among the best business references for our profession. Presented in an accessible format, Cherie Sohnen-Moe speaks to the special needs of the professional therapist. The fact is that you are self employed whether you have your own practice or you are working for someone else as an independent contractor. Keeping that in mind, a book such as Business Mastery is as important as any of the anatomy and technique books in your library. Having designed and taught the business curriculum for a major massage school, Business Mastery remains my primary recommendation for anyone looking to pick up a first-class business reference manual.
Great for virtually ALL holistic practitioners!.......2005-07-15
You've mastered your studies, but to start a successful business or to manage an existing one you need to understand business operations - what business book can you turn to? This one!
There are many great books on business, many great books on the plethora of holistic modalities out there. The authors of this book understand both sides of the practitioners needs and put it together well, with great examples to work with. While the examples typically focus on massage/touch therapy, just about everything can be translated to other practices, such as Reiki, Acupuncture etc. - the basic concepts remain the same.
While there are a few chapters that run a bit long, I feel this book is worthwhile in any practitioner's collection. I have a copy of this book in my home office and plan to buy a second reference copy for my clinic. An invaluable reference guide!

This book is excellent in giving the massage therapist a game plan in running a business. It also helped me in studying for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It was helpful when I was reviewing for the Business practices part of the exam. However, I also highly recommend the following which is also sold on amazon.com:

Customer Reviews:
False review.......2006-10-16
I've noticed same comment made (almost word by word) to the previous book of Gladstone (Venture Capital Handbook) meaning that they're not reviews at all but sheer PR or advertisement to sell books. I didn't buy both of them.
VC Investing Basics.......2004-07-13
Much updated from previous editions, David Gladstone's useful text provides a very cursory survey of deal and investment techniques, albeit for slightly later than "sexy" stage deals. However, as this book is designed for the novice, and as Lipper's text has fallen out of print, this sadly remains the only general text on VC investing for the inexperienced, and is useful in context of the level which it is designed to educate. While the many checklists may be somewhat annoying to seasoned VCs, they are probably indispensable to the novice investor, since they provide a summary framework when working through deal and business terms. And while the book is designed more for later stage (through certainly not LATE stage, as some have alluded to) deals, the book is, again, designed to educate the novice venture investor, who really shouldn't be doing high tech start-ups anyway. Irrespective of that, anyone who presumes to write a text on investing in high tech start ups would likely find his text applicable only for the next few months after printing. Ours is an industry that evolves very quickly, and changes rapidly in accordance to the latest trends. No one can teach you how to pick the winners in the trend that hasn't happened yet. Getting the basics from a text like Gladstone's, however, can give you the fundamentals on which to build that "knack".
Insightful!.......2004-04-30
This book is a thorough, practical guide to the nitty-gritty of venture capital investing. This comprehensive, well-organized instruction manual summarizes the homework you should do before you make a venture capital investment, the paperwork needed to carry out the investment and the ongoing work you will have to undertake to have a prayer of seeing your investment pay off. If it is a little plodding, you can understand why. It covers a lot of ground. The authors compare venture capital investing to a partnership at one point, to a marriage at another. They don't attempt to sell you on venture investing. In fact, by telling you how difficult and labor intensive it is, they may even drive you away. We believe this book definitely belongs in the library of anyone who has ever taken a serious interest in venture investing. It will also help entrepreneurs who need venture capital financing by showing them how to evaluate their companies according to the criteria that serious investors are apt to use.

Great tool for fundraising planning. Workable model for creating a donation and fundraising plan for nonprofit companies.
Plan, plan, plan!.......2004-12-30
The Fundraising Planner does a nice job covering the "particulars" of planning without losing sight of the bigger picture. Like other titles in the Jossey-Bass series, this guide is helpful in structuring an approach and strategy for raising funds. Practical and well-written.
Good Intro Book.......2004-01-31
This is a pretty solid introductory book to fundraising, donor management, proposals, etc. If you are new to the business I would definitely recommend it, though more experienced people might not find it quite as helpful. (though there are still a some good nuggets of information)

You've got a hot idea for a new dot-com, and you're itching to join the folks who regularly show up on CNBC and at the Lexus dealerships in Silicon Valley. But you also know your odds of big-time success are about as long as Bill Gates's position in MSFT. What do you do? John Nesheim, an adjunct professor at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, who has personally structured over $300 million in new-venture deals, lays out the step-by-step skinny in High Tech Startup. Incorporating some two dozen case studies spanning the technology spectrum, he presents info specific to this industry that will help you get from concept to IPO. It begins with a 14-phase schedule itemizing time requirements, necessary assistance, typical participants, major costs, main risks, and desired results for each step. It then details all the critical stages (i.e., forming the company, preparing the business plan, assembling the team, dealing with venture capitalists and other funding sources). Nesheim focuses on practical strategies that should certainly improve your chances, but don't start prepping for that on-air interview with Mark Haines just yet: Only six out of 1 million high-tech ideas, he notes, ever become successful companies that go public. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The phenomenal success of the initial public offerings (IPOs) of many new internet companies obscures the fact that fewer than six out of 1 million business plans submitted to venture capital firms will ever reach the IPO stage. Many fail, according to start-up expert John Nesheim, because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies. Now they do.
This revised and updated edition of Nesheim's underground Silicon Valley bestseller incorporates twenty-three case studies of successful start-ups, including tables of wealth showing how much money founders and investors realized from each venture. Acclaimed by entrepreneurs the world over, this practical handbook is filled with hard-to-find information and guidance covering every key phase of a start-up, from idea to IPO: how to create a winning business plan, how to value the firm, how venture capitalists work, how they make their money, where to find alternative sources of funding, how to select a good lawyer, and how to protect intellectual property. Nesheim aims to improve the odds of success for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and offers an insider's perspective from firsthand experience on one of the toughest challenges they face -- convincing venture capitalists or investment banks to provide financing.
This complete, classic reference tool is essential reading for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs already involved in a start-up who want to increase their chances of success to rise to the top.

Make no mistake: even with all their potential for meteoric success, high tech ventures are synonymous with high risk. Fewer than one out of every 47,000 Internet business plans submitted to venture capital firms ever reach the initial public offering (IPO) stage. Many fail because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies.
Now they do. The book C-Cube Microsystems President Bill O'Meara calls "a must read for all high tech entrepreneurs" has all the hard-to-find information that start-ups need to rise to the top. High Tech Start Up presents a classic, step-by-step strategy for making a solid plan and securing multi-round financing. Author John Nesheim -- a premier start-up veteran, having single-handedly structured over $300 million in new venture deals -- provides more than twenty-three case studies that reveal how readers can modify their strategies to fit their particular objectives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for entrepreneurs considering a start-up!.......2007-09-06
Book gives a good overview of the process, timeline, and who is involved. Great insight into what venture capitalists look for, equity ownership and dilution, and how to select key advisors (i.e., attorney, banker) on the start-up team. It is an eye-opener to help you know what to expect in terms of how long it will take to get established and the likelihood of being bought out or reaching IPO. Definitely recommend.
A course on entrepreneurship .......2007-05-15
The book is slightly dated and was published at the height of the tech bubble, but don't let that detract you from picking it up - `High Tech Startup' has volumes of invaluable advice. John Nesheim covers the entire lifespan of a startup: from finding an attorney to start the company, to picking an investment banker to do an IPO. Of course, the scope of the work also limits the amount of information, but it gives you enough to find what you're missing and to continue your research. The case studies and suggestions from seasoned CEO's were especially useful - experience is cheapest second hand, and there is plenty of it in this book. `High Tech Startup' is a business course I should have taken years ago (and most school don't offer), highly recommended.
Full of information.......2007-03-23
I enjoyed this book, in face I have taken a lot of the information and put it into our business plan for a new start up. Though the information is dated it still holds... At the end of the day, business is business.
We are using it as our bible, and I will come back in a few months and tell you how our efforts go.

O verwhelming Info.......2007-01-13
The book is so informative, it so hard to stop reading when the book is fun and full of ah ha and hmm. The author give a precise info on how the start-up company can obtain VC funding. Most of the reviewer are right about their comment on this book, it should be the bible of start-up company.
Start Up Business Bible.......2006-01-30
I lead the technology center for an up and coming online payment services company. To say that High Tech Start Up has been very helpful in our growth is truly an understatement. My boss lugs around his copy of the book and constantly quotes from it, calling it his bible. The book has guided him in positioning the company in the market accordingly and has helped him in making informed decisions. I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to carve a niche in the high tech industry.

Customer Reviews:
this is NOT true guerilla marketing.......2006-12-13
The authors' use of the term "guerilla marketing" is completely inaccurate. This book is about TRADITIONAL media -- guerilla marketing is the complete opposite. It was also written in 1994, before the advent of the commercialized Internet, so it's a very very very old school approach to advertising. It has some good information about traditional advertising for small businesses, but most of the reference information is way out of date. If you're looking for subversive, alternative approaches to marketing, read "Under The Radar" by Bond & Kirshenbaum instead.
Timeless tactics for small businesses.......2005-08-05
The beauty of this book is that most of the tactics inside it are as relevant and useful today as they were 20 years ago. I first got this book when my professor (a highly succesful multi-millionaire) recommended it to me. He said it was as good as any Marketing degree. Well I have my Marketing degree and would have to agree with him. The best promotional campaign is the one that costs the least but gets the most results. That is what you have here. This is especially helpful for small niche businesses. Those types of businesses can really take advantage of this book.
It is admittedly weak on the web side of things but I have never really found that to be a very useful avenue for anyone but the major players that can afford to buy costly advertising. No this is for small businesses that do most of their deals face to face.
Easy money.......2005-08-04
This book is great. It's easy enough to follow for the complete layman but inciteful enough for the experienced entrepreneur. I would recomend this book to anyone with a business of their own or just a passion for sales and marketing.
original marketers.......2005-04-17
there are countless copycat books on publicity and marketing. if you can't learn pr traditionally, then this is the next best thing. levinson and godin practices what they preach. both are well known around the world. their books are well known and classes are well attended. do not be fooled by others claiming they are pr experts when they are not well known or do not have any well known students or products.
