Customer Reviews:
Even experienced sellers will learn something.......2007-07-08
I have bought and sold stuff online for years and this book still had useful information in it. It gives useful, specific sources for many different categories of eCommerce.
I have paid much more for courses and books from so called marketing experts that didn't have near as much information.
So often you will read or hear that you need to do this or that, but they never tell you the specific places that you can go to get it done.
The many different categories of selling advice would at first make you think that it just glosses over them but once you start to read you see that they are one of the strengths of this book... you just keep finding good advice to tweak and improve your online business.
From web site design and boosting traffic to credit card acceptance to keeping your customers happy or even legal advice for people just starting out, it's hard to name just one part that would be considered the best part of this book. Site security to even the basics of chosing a business name are covered.
It doesn't matter if you are only thinking about starting an online business or if you have various web sites and are an experienced eBay user, there will be something in here that will make you glad you bought it.
Excellent- From Basic info to More Advanced all in One!.......2007-06-18
This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.
A Great Reference!.......2007-01-12
A wonderful reference to have at your desk. It truly is like having lots of books in 1 - 800+ pages!

Great Service!.......2007-07-06
This is a great book with all of the information that I was looking for. The product was received on the date specified. The service was excellent. Thanks again!
Great eBay starter book.......2007-06-14
If you are trying to get started in eBay you gotta get this book.
Good comprehensive starting point for the prospective eBay-er.......2007-03-28
This author is one of the current gurus in the area of making a ton by selling stuff on eBay. I've been registered there for almost a decade myself, buying books and stamps at first, and then selling them. I was never out to amass a fortune, the way Collier and so many others seems to be, but I've made a slow and steady income and I've been happy with that. Since I taught myself how to do all that stuff back when eBay was still a relatively site, I've never felt the need of a how-to book, but a colleague recommended this one so I decided to take a look at it. Not bad, not bad at all. While enthusiastic (because it's required by the publisher of this series), Collier manages not to get carried away too often. For instance, she will suggest good online business practices, then confess that she seldom follows this one or that one herself. I didn't find anything I didn't already know in the "Basics" section (which was kind of a relief), but she has some interesting things to say about researching goods on the Web, whether you're buying or selling, and some subtle points about the way PayPal works which I hadn't really thought about, and so on. The author also has a strong background in marketing and sales and what she has a number of thoughtful things to say regarding the application of that experience to eBay, things that us humanities majors have never had to learn. So, while I won't follow her advice on using QuickBooks, and I don't expect to open an eBay Store, I certainly put a lot of bookmarks in this fat volume for future reference and rereading.
Very informative!.......2007-03-13
Although you will find yourself needing a lot of time to read it, I think this book has all what you need to know about ebay. either to buy or sell. It is very informative and easy to read. I recomend it.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-02-14
If you're on a tight budget, much of what she tells you is actually explained on eBay in the "Site Map", but you can't spend ALL your time online! For example: I wanted to have my own domain outside eBay. Marsha provided a springboard saving me hours of research time. I ended up with one of her suggestions. That tip alone has saved me beaucoup $$. Ideal for beginning to intermediate sellers.
CON: this deals only with eBay. I find selling on Amazon often to be the better choice. Also no mention of Overstock nor Yahoo.

The laws covering intellectual property--those products of the imagination with commercial value, such as fictional writing, software designs, product names, and mechanical inventions--have long boggled the minds of the uninitiated. With the advent of online commerce and publishing, the issues have only gotten more confusing. The new edition of Patent, Copyright & Trademark: A Desk Reference to Intellectual Property Law, by attorney Stephen Elias, offers plain-English explanations and practical advice on this increasingly complex topic. Elias covers everything from the laws themselves to their specific applications in different media.

*who owns creative works or valuable information
*how these owners can protect and enforce their ownership rights
*how disputes between intellectual-property owners can be resolved
*how ownership rights can best be transferred to others
*and many more
With this essential guide, you will:
*get clear and concise overviews of patent copyright, trademark and trade secret law

Customer Reviews:
Great Resource.......2007-09-08
Excellent follow-up to the previous Nolo editions. Layout of the book was not as graphically pleasing, but the information is straightforward and well presented.
The book is subpar.......2006-09-24
I bought this book as a primer reference to patents. What I got was a dictionary of words. This book pretty much is a dictionary without a lot of explanations. Really basic terms also. A lot of basic paraphrasing instead of actual text from the 35 USC manual.
Legal Information without the Legalese.......2006-03-11
This book is easy-to-use and highly detailed with an appealing, bulleted layout and many illustrations that helped to answer most of my basic questions about the four categories of intellectual property (copyright, patents, trademarks and trade secrets). I took a graduate-level library science course on the legal aspects of information and borrowed several books on IP from the library. This Nolo Press book was the one that I kept coming back to and wound up buying. I was glad I waited for the updated 7th edition, which now includes an index. The book is divided into completely logical sections on definitions, statutes, forms and an overview, all of which make this book a joy to read. The text is written in plain English and the entries are cross-referenced and other resources are given. This is a legal book written by lawyers, but the legalese is edited out and only very useful information remains. If you need one basic legal reference book on IP, this is the one you'll keep reaching for.
Very Good.......2004-09-10
This has a lot of detail and organized information that a patent applicant might use. However, it does not provide an overview quite as well as something like "Patents for Beginners" (PfB). For patent applicants, I would recommend getting both books, but someone like a jurist or an expert witness might be better served by PfB.
Useful Overview of Major Areas of Intellectual Property Law.......2003-09-02
Having worked in the field of intellectual property for over 30 years and as an attorney, I was interested to see what other attorneys would decide to put into a desk reference on the subject. I was pleasantly surprised.
Most business people I meet have a minimal understanding of intellectual property law. As a result, they make fundamental errors that could be easily avoided with a simple foundation in the law. But I didn't know of any place where they could get such a foundation until I read this excellent reference guide.
Many law students would probably also like to have a simple reference to give them a background in the subject before they start taking courses in the subject. Most attorneys also do not have any law school training in the subject, and they will also benefit from using this reference.
I was particularly impressed that the cost was modest for a legal reference.
The basic subjects are trade secrets, copyright, patent and trademark law. In all but patent law, a lay person can make many of the right moves in establishing rights without too much legal help. Patent law requires legal guidance in most areas, but a lay person can also avoid mistakes by understanding some of the common pitfalls that people fall into.
I was particularly pleased to see that trade secrets were covered well. Most business people do not realize that trade secret protection is often superior to that of copyrights, patents and trademarks. But you have to follow the rules, or your trade secret isn't going to be considered one. I only find about one business person in a hundred who is familiar with these rules.
Most people will also improve their copyright protection by following this guide.
In patents, it's very important to document what you've been doing, and I found those references to be very well done.
As to trademarks, most people misunderstand what can be trademarked and this book clears that point up quite well.
So think of this book as more than a self-help guide and less than a legal horn book. Naturally, the intricacies of appellate cases aren't fully exposed, but there's enough here to raise fundamental issues in your mind. In each area, you will see sample forms and documents along with directions for how to obtain and file them.
Nolo also offers an on-line reference that updates the material in this book, so you don't have to take out an extra subscription like most legal sources require.
In doing your legal planning, be sure to look at the guide on pages 9-11 to see what forms of intellectual property protection may be available to you. That guide is worth the price of the book alone.
I was also impressed by the extensive definitions in each subject area. Be sure to read through them all. Without a legal background, you won?t know what you don?t know unless you check these out. Naturally, the primary statutes are also included, for those who do not know how to look them up.
People who are new to these subjects will also benefit from the many references to other sources, including on-line databases.
I would advise anyone who tries to differentiate themselves through intellectual endeavors to use this guide to become familiar with the basics of the law.
After you finish reviewing this book, I suggest that you spend the time to think through how you can strengthen you legal protection of your most valuable forms of intellectual property.
