This is an excellent book! It is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to implement. Any counselor who is working or plans to work with middle or high school kids MUST have this book.

Great book for school counselor training programs. It offers a realistic, practical theory to complement other teaching. It also provides good examples. I highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars A book that really works!.......2000-06-10

As the only counselor in a middle school of 400 students, I had been searching for a book to help me address the needs of my students. Somehow, perhaps by 'divine intervention' I happened onto Dr. Murphy's book, "Solution-Focused Counseling in Middle and High Schools". It has become my bible. It is something that works in an environment of limited time and unlimited student needs. IT WORKS! It is so rare to find information that is road-tested and really works for those of us who spend our day in the real world of middle and high schools. Thanks to Dr. Murphy for his insight and wisdom. I feel like a very competent counselor and this book is a big reason for that confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for Solutions, Solving Problems.......2000-05-16

These days lots of schools are worried about how to work with "problem kids." The problem with that, as John Murphy explains in his great book "Solution-Focused Counseling...," is that we focus too much on what's wrong with kids and not enough on their strengths. Murphy's belief in the power of young people to solve their own problems with the right guidance shines through. A clear, entertaining read on a terribly important subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teachers and Counselors.......2000-02-28

Murphy gives great tips and strategies for working with students in middle and high schools. The book is clear and crisp, and it should make wonderful addition to the bookshelf of anyone who works with students in secondary schools.

4 out of 5 stars Educators--Take Note.......2000-03-20

This book should be required reading for high school and middle school teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators. (And it wouldn't hurt for the elementary school educators to read it, either.) It is also recommended for parents who are concerned about the types of curriculums offered in high schools today.

Gray and Herr say that the "one way to win" (i.e, the four-year college education) does not work for all students -- particularly many in what they call the academic middle. They say that many of these students enter four-year colleges ill prepared. They end up taking many remedial courses their first year, many do not finish college, and end up with high student loan debt.

They recommend that students start to prepare a career plan in middle school or the first year in high school. Such plans should include a realistic assessment of the student's abilities to undertake a four-year college program. For many students, moving into one and two-year certificate and associate degree programs which lead to highly skilled, highly paying jobs would be a better alternative than a four-year college. Other students would benefit from a school-to-work transition program.

In short, Gray and Herr say that the current academic system is failing many students, and we need to look at alternatives to help students succeed.

2 out of 5 stars basic info... so much of it the baby goes out with bathwater.......2007-07-26

i agree entirely with the previous reviewer, in that book tries casts a scope so wide that it becomes nearly useless as a resorce for a beginning teacher. this book would be excellent for a person who has not taken a teachers training course (B. Ed., or teachers college), but for those who have, the info is so basic as to become useless. there is simply so much info here that is redundant to any decent training you might have already had, and any gems that may be buried within are lost amongst the mass.

i give this book two stars, because for a person who has not been trained to teach this book really does cover *all* of the basics (mostly theory that guides your practice). however, going into this book i know what i needed, which is: 1) straightforward, practical pointers on what i need to do to prepare, 2) suggestions for activites to use in the first week.

going in to a teaching career, you will hopefully have so much support from fellow teachers that you will be getting first hand info and guidance (probably even lesson plans) that you will not need to worry, but that first week is what things will hinge on, and it is probably the week that you are most on your own. this book should be 1/3 the size, include sample rubrics and other tools, and condensed all of it's info.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-03-09

For the first year or beginning teacher, this book is "a must have".
It provides concrete advice about what a beginning teacher should and
should not do. It is extremely "readable", with no fancy jargon, and a real
resource to help a new teacher get started. On top of that it is actually
entertaining to read, not boring. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Review of College Preparation.......2006-07-31

I have been searching for teaching job for 4 years now and have finally been offered one. After being out of college for that long period, I was worried about my classroom managment practices. This book was a great review of everything learned in college plus some! I also have Wong's First Days of School. I think that this text far surpasses Wong's.

5 out of 5 stars Your First Year As a High School Teacher : Making the Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional.......2006-07-17

This book should be required reading for every new high school teacher! I am giving a copy to my student teacher, and to my daughter, a future teacher. It is well-written, and brings up topics that a new teacher might not have thought about. Well-reasoned answers to questions are provided. As a veteran teacher, I found myself marking pages as I read through it.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-10-15

This book seemed like a lot of common sense to someone who already knows even a little bit about what it's like to be a teacher. Book might be helpful to a student who isn't quite sure yet.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative.......1999-12-06

I am a parent of two homeschooled teenagers and highly recommend this book not only for teens but for others who are still searching for their "niche" in life. The author gives very practical ideas on helping make decisions about their vocation and does not automatically assume that college is the way to get there.

Book Description

If your child seems indecisive about college, don't read the riot act, read this landmark book instead. College is not the only alternative. A New York Times editor and concerned parent tells you why and helps you to find happy alternatives to starting college before your child is ready.

As an educated, committed parent, Linda Lee harbored the usual expectation of a prestigious college degree as the illustrious preface to a top-flight career for her child. Some fifty thousand dollars and several disastrous report cards later, Lee recognized that her seemingly rational expectations were proving far-fetched and that her son was simply not ready for college. Moreover, she was shocked to discover that his experience was not the exception but the rule; only 26 percent of students receive a bachelor's degree within five years.

Why, then, are parents led to believe that their children must go to college immediately and that it is the right choice for everyone? If not attending college worked for Bill Gates, Harry S. Truman, Thomas Edison, and William Faulkner, why can't it work for your child and what are your alternatives?

Success Without College is a groundbreaking book that reveals the surprising facts of why many bright kids are not suited for college (or at least not right after high school). Lee's accessible, knowledgeable style informs parents why this should be more a source of pride than shame by providing profiles of students and parents from around the country and their creative, positive solutions to the college dilemma. With a college education now costing an average of a hundred thousand dollars, maybe it's time for American parents to reconsider: Do you really need college to succeed?

Why do parents believe their children must go to college and that this is the right step for everyone? Lee informs parents why this should be a source of pride, not shame, by providing profiles of students and parents around the country and their creative, positive solutions to the dilemma.

2 out of 5 stars Linda Lee is All Wrong. College benefits the Person. .......2006-05-06

These are just evil destructive tactics (by author Linda Lee) in where she wants all of America or most of America not to attend College. If her son, or daughter had problems academically then that is her problem but not Ours. College is fun and is a good learning experience for all. Colleges out there have remedial programs as well as tutorials which will help those in academic needs. I have to admit that many teachers at the institutions that exist in this great Nation of Ours (USA) are in it for the flunking of students, the flunking of pretty girls, etc., because many teachers(who teach at colleges are racist & selfish) and want to be the only ones with the degree (with the Phd diploma) and want no one else climbing the educational ladder of success. What do i mean? Of a student working hard and oof getting graded fairly by his or her teacher and achieving his or her master's degree in the field he or she chose to major in won't happen because the teacher is full of biases. Even though this happens we must strive ahead in reaching that frontier. Many student's out there right now in 2006 get flunked so bad that it forces them to leave college, in where, in the end they get the burger flipping job at McDonald's or at Burger King. Linda Lee should think about this and not encourage students and parents (about one not going to college). Even though i said this, many will not like it but it is the true state of many colleges out there. Next, for example, a youngster who graduates high school can not get a pro job just like that. They need an education(either a vocational skill or a four year degre or more)depending on what he or she likes. We can't have youngsters-boys and girls freshly out of college work at McDonalds, or at Walmart for the rest of their lives. Making minimum wage will not help them find a good mate either. (Hypothetical)For example, is the nice attractive woman who works at amazon.com (and who has a killer body that does not quit) going to marry the local hot guy janitor that works at the Seattle independent school district? The answer is no. That young man needs an education in order to find a good mate. Education helps all in the sphere or spheres of life. There has to be a balance in everything we do in life, and this to involves education. Linda Lee only sees things from her selfish point of view only.
I am an online student graduate, and i feel that all students should go to college because in the short run and the long run it benefits everyone. How? College will refine one, and will get us in the mood to think and read. College will also refine our people skills, our skills with women (in clean interaction/respect).
Like i said, Linda Lee is a fool. If she had it bad then it is her gig, but everyone else should not pay the piper for her chaotic destiny. Linda Lee also has to see the vision of outsourcing as a problem in this nation. So, kids without college degrees and out sourcing going on right now will only hurt those kids. Linda Lee is full of Hate! And that is the bottom line....I don't recommend this b.m. (bowel movement/excrement)of a book to anyone. Getting a college degree is like drinking purified water, everyone should be given a glass with purified water in it-it is everyones right to drink nice clean purified water. Because those who don't have the purified water will only hurt for now and later(relating this example to getting a college education). America wake up! Do you want to cripple your child academically? The educational system is for all not just the few who only wish to be the ones with the knowledge and the diplomas. Linda Lee is all wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Parent in angst over grad must read.......2005-08-21

College is not going anywhere.

What do you do when your child graduates? You give them an ultimatum: two options, college or job, right? This book gave me peace and saved me from beating myself up over the fact that my child pursued option number two; a modeling career in California this fall.

Creme rises to the top irregardless as shown through the examples of this book. The fact of the matter is people are born with different temperaments, abilities and ambitions. This book aides the exceptance.

My daughter takes on line prerequisites with our local Florida community college from California (she feels as though she would be a total loser if she didn't due to societal programming). I'm apprehensive to pass this book along to her because I'm afraid she will not develope her innate intellectual nature at some point. That makes this book Rated Restricted to parents...first, then maybe your child, but in my case, not. Still, wonderful quick read and talented author.

5 out of 5 stars A Dream Come True and Perfect for My Ex-Wife and Three Kids!.......2004-12-04

Linda Lee has done a very good thing. She's written a concise and much needed book on why it's not so important for kids to go to college anymore. She ignores the fact that colleges have gotten ridiculously simple with all the grade inflation and silly admission policies and instead focuses on how unambitious and industrious young people can thrive in today's environment without the shackles of a college diploma.

This is a very important book and one I have already gift wrapped and placed in the care of the USPS as a special "present" for my second ex-wife (the supposed mother of my first three children). I've been sending the witch too much of my meager paychecks for the past ten years and she's already started yapping about the "college expenses". Thanks to Ms. Lee, I am very hopeful that instead of the ridiculously overpriced college tuition bills I can get by with this much less expensive "guide" to life without college. Who needs frat beer bashes and sorority panty parties? Not my kids. This book will do just fine. Very Highly Recommended. HHD.

5 out of 5 stars March to the beat of your own drummer........2004-02-04

Knowledge is free, power is money, the feeling of power = priceless. This is for real people who live on the real earth. College pumps out little robots to go back and forth to work every day. I see it all the time. When I am driving around at 5PM once in a blue moon, I see the suites with the cell phone that serous look on their face driving the Honda in rush hour traffic. Well if that is what you want to do when you grow up and make $50,000 a year and a few small vacations per year be my guest. If you get lucky you may not get a divorce like 50% of Americans in the rat race cycle. It's just a cattle race. Id rather grow my enterprise a big as I can because its fun, I enjoy being a leader. This was a great book more people should read it because I do not want to anyone to tell me how lucky I was to be so successful with out college, I am sick of it. Luck has nothing to do with it. With the human body and a brain you should be able to do what ever you want without college. If I wanted to be an accountant ill just walk down the hall and ask one of my employees to teach me and ill give her a raise. This was a good book.

5 out of 5 stars To the point.......2003-11-04

This book has impressed me with the facts presented. I'm a vocational guidance counselor and I have a hard time recruiting students to take one of our technical/vocational programs. Parents are determined from the day a child is born that that child will graduate from college with a four year degree. As the author so well puts it, very few kids are actually suited for college. This book will help me put together a presentation to my students' parents to help them make a well informed decision about their child's education. I can't say enough about how much I have enjoyed this book and how it will help me in my work.

Book Description

Going to College tells the powerful story of how high school students make choices about postsecondary education. Drawing on their unprecedented nine-year study of high school students, the authors explore how students and their parents negotiate these important decisions. Family background, finances, education, information -- all influence students' plans after high school and the career paths they pursue, as do the more subtle messages delivered by parents and counselors which shape adolescents' self-expectations. For high school guidance counselors, college admissions counselors, parents and teachers, and public policy makers, this book is a valuable resource that explains the decision-making process and helps adults to help students make appropriate choices.

The authors identify predisposition, search, and choice as the three stages in the student decision-making process. Predisposition refers to the plans students develop for education or work after they graduate from high school. The search stage involves students discovering and evaluating a variety of colleges and universities. In the choice stage, students choose a school to attend from among a list of institutions that are being seriously considered. Understanding exactly how students move through the predisposition, search, and choice stages of the college decision-making process can help students and parents prepare themselves for this process and consider a wider array of options. For education professionals, understanding this process can lead to new initiatives to guide students and families effectively -- by providing better incentives for college savings, for example, or devising more effective early information programs about postsecondary education.

Going to Collegeis the first book to seriously study over an extended period the decisions that have a pervasive and lasting impact on individual careers, livelihoods, and lifestyles. The authors conclude with important recommendations for improving academic support, exploring various financial options, providing early encouragement -- in other words, for recognizing the factors that influence students' decisions, and knowing when to pay attention to them.

3 out of 5 stars A book of unusual scope but it falls a bit short.......2002-09-09

This book reports on studies the authors conducted in Indiana between 1986 and 1994. It examines what may make a high schooler predisposed to attend college, how students search for college opportunities, and what choices they ultimately make upon graduation from high school. Finally, it reviews what the study's participants actually did do in the four years following high school.

In addition to outlining findings from these surveys, Going to College also reports in greater depth on interviews with eight students. While relatively interesting, the interviews are not the most beneficial part of the book. Even the surveys, the book acknowledges, may be somewhat limited in their value. For instance, some results may not be useful to people in other parts of the country. The study is set in Indiana, where the average parental income and educational levels are in the bottom half of the fifty states.

Nonetheless, Going to College contains a number of interesting conclusions and statements. For example, the study discovered that seven of ten sophomores who said they planned to attend a college of some sort did actually matriculate in college after high school. However, only 35% of the students surveyed ended up attending one of the colleges they were considering in the tenth grade year.

Going to College also tries to determine what characteristics may "predict" whether or not a high schooler will end up attending college. The role of parents seems to be a key predictor. The authors found that toward the beginning of the college selection process--during the early high school years--the encouragement of parents is most likely to determine whether or not a student has college aspirations. Sixty-four percent of students who received strong encouragement from their parents attended a four-year college (p. 102). The parents' level of educational attainment also makes a difference. As that level increases, children are more likely to go to college. Seventy-five percent of students whose parents had a college degree actually enrolled in college (p. 104).

The second strongest indicator of college aspirations is the students' high school grade point average. Ninety-one percent of A students plan to attend a four-year college and 65% of B students do, but only 28% of C students expect to go to college (p. 106).

Going to College represents the type of research that most college and university enrollment managers would love to conduct: A longitudinal study that traces students' and parents' attitudes, influences and goals through the high school years and beyond. Unfortunately, the results of this particular study are somewhat limited.

4 out of 5 stars Great contributed research : Required for all parents.......2001-04-25

I'm not in an education area, I'm an engineer though. I bought this book to see research in educational or social science on impat of high school students choosing their higher education. After reading "preface", I was stunned for the research had been conducted for "9" years! This book is very important for any parents. The college may be for your children at 17-18, but this book will tell you how important you are to support them; not only when they go to College but much before (e.g., sixth grade). I'm glad I read this book before I have my own child. What more surprising me is the book organization. This book was well written and organized. The structure is easy to follow. For each case study, the conclusion was drawn. Their research factors/questions were well defined. I wasn't surprised to see the outcome of their research. What annoy me is the keeping-talking of statistics tool. While it's important, the writing and research are more important. It's quite disappointed me.

4 out of 5 stars Short read but not a true primer on college choice.......2000-08-18

Don Hossler is probably the most prolific writer on admissions and enrollment management in the last two decades, and, in my opinion, the best. This book, written with two co-authors, though, disappoints a little bit.

If you're looking for a basic overview on how students select colleges, try Hossler's other work or that of others on the structure of college choice. Avoid the mass-market "choosing a college" books that are targeted to over-anxious students and parents.

The core of the book describes a longitudinal study the authors did on Indiana high school students. While the stats and ancedotes do a fine job helping the reader to understand the process *these students* were going through, it's difficult to read and not think "how would this apply to other students? Does it at all?"

There is a worthy summary of the current theory and models of student college choice in the closing chapters. My advice, if you read this book, is to start with the generalized information in the back and then read the rest of the book from page one.

5 out of 5 stars Careers in Two Years.......2000-04-05

As a counselor in a Community College, I found this book to be an excellent example of ways in which our students could use their degrees. Many of the students at a two year college are not aware of what they could use their degrees for and this book helps to make them aware of their options.

I wish I'd had a book like this when I graduated high school and wasn't quite ready for college. Fortunately, this book is available to my kids--it gives confidence, courage, clarity, and loads of information. And, it promotes flexible thinking, allowing them to see graduation and beyond as the next step to adulthood. This author really cares about kids.
