Product Description

The passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002 has had sweeping implications for professionals involved in financial reporting, ranging from certification of financial reports by chief executives to a mandated study by the SEC of principles-based accounting standards, rather than rules-based (which is clearly the current state of affairs for financial instruments accounting). Financial Instruments: A Comprehensive Guide to Accounting and Reporting is written for practicing accountants and other professionals who need to understand the accounting for financial instruments. This unique book pulls together all of the existing accounting literature on financial instruments into one volume, organizes it logically, and describes the requirements as simply as possible. This comprehensive, topic-based approach will save practitioners time and effort in researching accounting issues. It includes guidance issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the FASB's Emerging Issues Task Force and Derivatives Implementation Group. It also includes standards issued by the AICPA Accounting Standards Executive Committee, and the audit and accounting guides issued by various committees of the AICPA. This guide covers accounting requirements for public and private companies and touches on unique aspects of reporting financial instruments by nonprofit organizations. Over 400 pieces of authoritative literature are referenced in this book. Each chapter covers the relevant accounting questions for each type of instrument, including: - When and how to initially recognize the instrument in the balance sheet - How to measure the instrument in subsequent periods - How to recognize income or expense - When and how impairment must be recognized - When the instrument should be removed from the balance sheet - What disclosures should be provided in the footnotes. The text includes visual aids whenever possible; observations, such as differences between instrument types; practice point

4 out of 5 stars Great content, very practical........2007-03-08

I am an NLP coach and I found this book really helpful. Lots of practical advice which includes case taking as well as scripts. I am getting great feedback and results from my clients! I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars Scripts and strategies .......2005-01-18

Allen collates both his previous volumes of collected Scripts and Strategies in Hypnotherapy together in this work. Many inductions are included and a few deepeners. Rightly, most of the work is concerned with the business of therapy itself. Many situation-specific ego-strengtheners are included, as well as sections on common issues such as pain management and anxiety. The ever-popular smoking-cessation, fear-management and weight-control receive large chapters of their own which I have found invaluable in my Central-Manchester, Wilmslow and Romiley clinics.

Previous reviews of the two separate volumes have always touted the scripts as off-the-peg verbatim scripts and frameworks around which to base a bespoke item for the client. However some of the scripts come over as a little too specific for undiluted use, causing me to go through with a pencil making notes.

Part eleven is entitled Therapy Strategies and includes tips for dealing with abreaction, age progression, re-framing, anchors etc. and each of these tactics is dealt with very well. However that is what they are; tactics (or gambits), not strategies. Therapeutic strategy involves various decisions such as "when is it useful to switch from a behaviouristic approach to a classic-dynamic one?" or "should I address the symptom or the cause (or both) in this particular case?" or "how can I most usefully model the direction(s) of causation between the different aspects of this complaint? " etc.

The majority of the scripts, allude to and reflect various strategies as, necessarily so, each script must be based on some paradigm or another. The only exception being the smoking cessation pages where the strategy and paradigm are discussed specifically, (e.g. Aversion vs. Coercion?)

Due to the name of the book, I expected to see some alternative potential conceptions of the nature of each presentation along with their respective interventions, but that's not what the book is all about. The formatting decisions of choosing a large font, and starting each new script on a new page, strongly hint at the book's ultimate purpose. It looks clean and is easily read allowing easy, quick access in the consulting room. After a short introduction to hypnosis it's just cover to cover useful scripts. An index would be welcome, as would be a more complete synopsis of each script, but ultimately the complete re-formatting of the two volumes of `Scripts and Tactics in Hypnotherapy' has made it much more convenient and better value. Now offering twice as many scripts per pound (or Dollar)!

5 out of 5 stars It's to the point.......2004-06-02

It's to the point, tells you what you need to know without all the filler stuff. Lots and lots of scripts. This one is a keeper. Great information to the hypnotherapist. If you are not using this book in your office then get it. Everything that you need is in this book. I don't know were to start, it has everything for any kind of session and even some that I have never seen.

The textbook was brand new and was wrapped in cellophane. Class began the following week, and the book arrived that week-end which gave me enough time to complete assignments in a timely fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2005-10-10

I used this book in my MBA program. This is a very good resource. It is researched based with many articles that are relatively short and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars A excellent collection of the classic readings........2000-12-24

The editors of the book have included in a single volume the classics. The articles include those authored by Kurt Lewin, Chris Argyris, Edgar Schein, Gareth Jones, C.K. Prahalad & Jeffrey Pfeffer besides many others. The latest edition published in 2000 include 16 new readings. Useful resource material for students of organisational behaviour and organisational change. The strategies described in some of the readings could be usefully applied in a variety of work settings. HR practioners and those in human resources development will find some of the articles valuable in crafting policies and renewal of training strategies. To sum it, in the words of the editors, "The field of organisation development is fun and exciting. We hope this anthology will convey some of that sense of excitement." I have discovered that sense of excitement when I read the articles in the book. I will continue to refer to them from time to time.

Book Description

Lymph drainage massage is a technique utilized by estheticians and massage therapists to provide relief from edema, an accumulation of fluids in the tissues that causes swelling. This book provides a scientifically accurate explanation of the lymphatic system, the theory behind lymph drainage massage, and explains when it should be performed. The book also explains the application of lymph drainage massage to the needs of well clients, rather than focusing on pathology, since most massage therapists and estheticians will not be treating lymph edema disease in their work.

5 out of 5 stars LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE BOOK.......2007-04-04

I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE, AND THE DIRECTIONS ARE VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM AND HOW TO USE MANUAL TECHNIQUES TO DRAIN THEM.

1 out of 5 stars Milady's Guide to Lymph Drainage.......2005-09-10

Not at all for lymphedema patients but otherwise a good view of lymph drainage for peoplele with less compromised or healthy lymph systems.

3 out of 5 stars review.......2005-09-01

I found this book very american. It skimmed the theory and dangerously avoided dangers of treating non healthy clients.I found the instructions confusing and unhelpful. I would not recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-07-07

I purchased this book to help with my husbands lymph drainage problem. His sister is a Physical Therapist and has looked over the book and says it is a great book. I also like it for the pictures that it includes and the "self Help" section so that he can do the exercises without always having to have me to do them. Thanks for such a great book.

Book Description

Cutting Edge Advertising is the first and only book providing a step-by-step plan to create cutting edge print advertising for the twenty-first Century. Over 300 world famous print ads are discussed and analysed in depth by the people who created them - the Gods of advertising now, not forty years ago. Internationally respected names like David Abbott, Tim Delaney, John Hegarty, Gary Goldsmith, Bob Barrie, Neil French and Jeff Goodby - from the world's most admired advertising agencies - share their secrets in a carefully structured, inspirational journey through the contemporary truths of doing great ads.

The book serves as a reference text for creatives, clients and colleges. No other single title covers the subject so completely - from research and strategy, through to conceptualising and crafting. For creatives in every agency of the world, the book provides a step-by-step methodology which can be applied immediately in their daily work. It means they can stop copying and start creating their own cutting edge work. By learning how to think like the masters, they can become masters themselves. For advertisers with brands to build, the book offers hundreds of insights into how the most internationally renowned campaigns were crafted. As more clients take direct control of their own advertising, the book arms them with vital methodology and a new way to think. In the author's words, "This is the book I wished I'd had when I started in the business." Unique features in the book include: 1. A chapter which demolishes the myths and formulae of how advertising should be done. For the first time in one book, world creative leaders explain why methodologies and precepts developed in the 1950s and 60s are no longer valid - and why many are actually harmful in today's context.

2. A chapter which explains how brand building has changed. Exciting new brands have emerged, displacing old ones. The strategists share their secrets and explain why a different kind of advertising is needed. 3. A chapter which actually tells you how to get ideas. No other advertising book has ever done this. The creative process is demystified. 4. Two chapters devoted to the craft of art direction and copy, where experts tell what to do and what not, which rules to break, and which rules never to. 5. A chapter of inspiring advice for everyone in advertising: how a cutting edge career can be nurtured and accelerated. The leaders of the industry discuss their own fears of failure, and what it takes to succeed.

6. No other advertising reference work provides 300 contemporary ads from the best agencies in the USA, UK, Europe and Australia. Details of how the ads are created and crafted are explained, sharing the decisions which had to be made along the way. The advice of the masters are expressed in simple, frank and (sometimes) provocative terms. 7. No other book of this kind addresses such issues as consumer psychology, how to strategise, how brands are being built; how cutting edge thinking can be applied to global campaigns; how to build a world class career and reputation.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Tool for Many of Us.......2003-07-17

Cutting Edge Advertising-Jim Aitchison

Quoting liberally from several dozen of the advertising world's most acclaimed copywriters and art directors, Mr. Aitchison does a brilliant job of explaining how the best print advertising is developed. In the first few chapters he deals with the subject on something of a higher, philosophical plane. But promptly thereafter, he settles down into an almost tutorial approach; working his way from how to arrive at an insight, how to transform that insight into an idea, and finally, how to craft that idea into a great ad-visually and in its writing.

Being an Australian, he is well positioned to tap into the enormous volume of great print advertising that has come out of the Asian markets-Singapore, Honk Kong and so forth. But he also references many of the best print advertising that has come out of the U.S. and U.K.
And while we're on the subject of print, it's worth noting that although it is the author's avowed intention to provide readers with "how to create the world's best print....", much of what he says can easily be applied to any effort in marketing communications.

All in all, an extremely valuable tool for beginning copywriters and art directors. Not a bad one for their superiors, who sometimes struggle for the exact words to explain why an ad is or isn't working. And certainly worth reading by the clients who finance all this print advertising-cutting edge and, in far too many cases, ham-handed.
Good show!

5 out of 5 stars Cut and thrust.......2001-02-14

Wit, wisdom, and style. Candid remarks. A warts and all approach, and a feel that gets under the skin of the beast called advertising. It's worth the purchase price alone for the tale of Neil French and XO beer ... a study in pure genius if you ask me, and I'm not just saying that because of a burning desire to become a copywriter, I'm saying that for one simple reason: it's true.

Yes, the reproductions could have been a little better in a few places, but it's what Hegarty, Barrie, French and Abbott (to name but a few), have to say that's more important, and the book is riddled with insights - so much so that many of the personalities simply leap off the page and slap you about the face.

As an aspiring creative it was comforting to read other reviews of this book from current players in SE Asia (reviews I read after having read the book), and I violently disagree with the reviewer who said the book was bollocks. What nonsense. And no, it's not "Hey Whipple, Squeeze This" - another marvelous book - nor could it be, for the simple reason that this book has a completely different voice.

From the seasoned pro to the up-and-coming young turk, this book has something for everyone. Regardless of how long you've been in the business there's an awful lot to learn, and I don't think this book can be faulted in any way other than a few dodgy bits of repro. If you're serious about the ad world this is probably one of the best books you could read. And read it you should - at least three times.

I came away from this book refreshed and energised. It's a text book, a reference book, a source of inspiration and something to go back to again and again. And if you can't be arsed with this book the world of advertising probably isn't for you.

1 out of 5 stars A load of old tosh.......2000-11-15

Well I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought Cutting Edge Advertising was absolute bollocks. I did like the cover, though. Very clever the way the word advertising is put in the shape of a dagger.

5 out of 5 stars If You don't Read It, You Missed It!.......2000-09-17

This is an excellent book.

Well-researched. Filled with new insights and creative philosophies about advertising in the Creative Economy.

The author is a practitioner in advertising, who has a passion for rules-breaking advertising.

I think this book will become a classic, when more people find out how good it is.

4 out of 5 stars very good, but no 'hey whipple'.......1999-11-24

A very practical and inspiring guide to creating great ads. Not as good as Luke Sullivan's book, though.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Review of Organization Development 6th edition.......2007-09-02

This book is a great resource that provides the history of Organization Development and an extensive overview of the field. There are tools and tips for interventions that will be very helpful in many change/improvement initiatives.

3 out of 5 stars Fine.......2007-04-07

I got it in time, and hopefully it helped me get a decent grade in my course. The description of this book was similar to the condition.

3 out of 5 stars Not clear that product was "low cost edition".......2005-09-11

I received the book I ordered; however, I received the "low cost" edition which basically means the paper is thinner making it more difficult to read because the print from the other side shows through. This was not clear in the description.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Classic.......2004-11-02

I'm a little disappointed at those who were horrified at its age--the French and Bell book is a classic and it was updated in 1999. Anyone who is interested in learning OD should read the book and you will get a great foundation. Go from there to learn more about individual OD interventions or theories. Yes, Kotter's book is great, too, but Kotter speaks about leading change (only one topic in OD) or about leadership (another goodie but only one topic). If you don't know anything about OD, read this book. Because it was originally written in the 70s doesn't invalidate it; in fact, it shows how good it is.

5 out of 5 stars how about some double loop learning ?.......2004-06-30

This is a flawed edition of a classic book.
Yes, it is historical in its overview. Yes it is dense with ideas and concepts. It makes readers think that OD/change management is hard work. But this is a good thing. Change aint easy, and intervening in people's working lives is serious business. Lets learn from the past. It also has lots of case explanations, and it does explain the theory clearly. I wouldn't let anyone who couldn't understand it near my consultancy work.

The criticism that it is dated is a bit more on the mark; not because the more recent stuff on change isn't there, it is, but it is tacked on to the material from earlier editions with no thought to the coherence of the book's structure. A shame; it needs a good, new third author who loves the original text to bring it up to date.

Despite the flaws, I give it 5 stars to bring the average up. Those who award it only one star do it an injustice. And, a lesson for the would be change agent, things in life, whether books or bits of our client organization are rarely wholly good or wholly bad..... (ok,ok).

Another good thing, compared to its competitors its small !

Book Description

From State to Market? examines the changing role of the French state in the economy between 1981 and 1995 and its impact on business. Professor Schmidt details the governmental policies of nationalization, privatization, deregulation, and European integration; illuminates the "statist" policymaking processes through which such policies were formulated and implemented; profiles the players, the administrative and managerial elites who share common state educational background and career track; and describes the changes in economic performance, capital structure, and managerial practice.

5 out of 5 stars Having read all the reviews, this is what I think:.......2001-10-03

I've read all the reviews of Schmidt's efforts on matter of European Integration. And here's what I think: She is destined to embrace the English model and the English model, I'm convinced, will embrace her. The two will be as one. They will be a European Union far more robust than anything concocted in Brussels. So I, for one, would like to celebrate that true union of politics and passion and hoist a glass to Schmidt and this English Model!

5 out of 5 stars Let me tell you about this English Model.......2001-10-03

As I see it, the English model must be (and no doubt is, in Schmidt's extraordinary hands) smart, generous, and prone to displays of great good humor. The English model must display the kind of maganimous spirit that say, one brother-in-law might display to another brother-in-law if the latter brother-in-law were, say, a writer needing a place to stay in England.

5 out of 5 stars May I know more about this English Model?.......2001-09-18

I've read through the review string, and I must ask about the referenced English model. Please tell me more. I know of course of Schmidt's work on French models and German models and the energy she devoted to the models of Italy and America. Before I endorse this new effort, I think we should know more.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, but . . ........2001-09-05

I agree with most of what the earlier reviewer stated. Schmidt is definitely 5-star material. But her most recent efforts have in point of fact focused almost exclusively on the English Model, and with amazing results.

5 out of 5 stars a class book i enjoyed.......2005-01-21

This book was used in my french business class as a cultural aspect. Its easy to follow and tries to help us American's step out of our own ideas of culture. I would recommend this book if you want to read for fun but like to learn something new as well

5 out of 5 stars It's the best.......2004-10-06

Anyone who visits France will enjoy this well written book. It explains much of the french culture, and relates it to the history of France. For someone who has a business, and sells products or services, this book is a textbook. Thank you for your clear, concise book. It will help you enjoy and understand your French friends and associates.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK DESERVES SIX STARS!.......2003-10-23

This book was insightful, rich, honest, and interesting. I could not put it down! This book is definetly worth buying, even if you are not interested in the french particularly. As someone with a french background, and french grandparents, this book makes me appreciate my heritage just a little more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice.......2003-07-27

Although this book was written before the current political crisis that strained relations between France and the United States, it provides excellent general advice for everyone traveling between the two countries. It gives a fair assessment of both cultures and urges the visiter to adopt an open mind and leave cultural baggage and prejudice at home. I spent almost two years planning our recent 3 week trip throughout France and studying the language (which as the authors say is a must). It is arrogant to expect that people in any other country will automatically speak your language. Why should they? Everywhere we went people were reserved, as we expected, but courteous and helpful and sometimes quite friendly. I agree with the authors that the key to good relations and living, working or vacationing in another country, France in this case, is to learn "their" history, culture and language and embrace the differences. I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars The Insider's Look.......2003-04-25

Au Contraire is more than a book on France, the French language, or a trifle on French "something." This book touches the essence of what it means to be French. The behind-the-scene look at the history, symbols, language, and customs is truly intriguing. The analyzation of such things as interpersonal relations, socialism, education, and other elements of French life is a treasure for the person who desires to live in France, if for only a short time. One of the most remarkable things about the book is the emphasis showing the inseperability between the language and the land: Being French is speaking the langauge, and don't forget it! It's a must for expats of any sort. I read the hefty book in a matter of days. It's just that good.

Book Description

The second of a two-book series about business intelligence and reporting technology, Integrating and Extending BIRT introduces programmers to BIRT architecture and the reporting framework. Built on the Eclipse platform, this exciting technology makes it possible for programmers to build and deploy customized reports using scripting and BIRT APIs. In addition, programmers can extend the BIRT framework by building new plug-ins using the Eclipse Plug-in Development Environment.

This book describes the key components of BIRT architecture, applications, and engines, including installing, deploying, and troubleshooting the Reporting and Charting engines in an Enterprise Java application-server environment. For developers who wish to incorporate custom business logic in their reports or access data from Java objects, the book describes BIRT's extensive scripting capabilities in JavaScript and Java. For developers who want to extend the BIRT framework, the book describes the key extension points to use in creating customized report items, rendering extensions for generating output other than HTML or PDF, and Open Data Access (ODA) drivers for new data sources. The book provides extensive examples of how to build plug-ins to extend the features of the BIRT framework.

5 out of 5 stars Explains org.eclipse.birt for Java customisation.......2006-12-14

This book is an impressive extension on "BIRT: A Field Guide to Reporting". The latter described BIRT to a newcomer, showing how to use its features. With a minimal discussion of scripting for customisation. While the scripting certainly involved programming, it was rather minimal, and most of the text showed a declarative layout approach to using BIRT.

The Integrating book is the sequel. Strictly a programmer's book. It assumes you've read the earlier book. But now you need to take the customising [much] further. So here the text shows how to program in Java, not just JavaScript. Essentially, the bulk of the book explains the package org.eclipse.birt, which is freely available and has been built out with many classes. The problem to a programmer is the sheer multitude of those classes. An embarrassment of riches which the book tackles.

Some classes relate to customising the UI. There is a charting API built on top of Java Swing. So you can key off your pre-existing Swing expertise. Swing is pretty easy to learn, and the BIRT graphics classes seem to continue this property.

The only possible problem might be if you prefer SWT widgets for the better native look and feel. But the BIRT contributors correctly decided to support the most popular widget set, which is Swing.

Other BIRT classes relate to getting data at the back end, from various possible sources.
