CLA Review Manual: A Practical Guide to CLA Exam Preparation.......2007-05-22
Good and comprehensive. I have no problem with the substantive value, however, the finish of the pages was raged and not trimmed properly. One part was extended way beyond the cover. Is this because Amazon gives a discount? Not something I appreciate in a book I will keep in my library for life. The prior issue was a better-quality product.
A great review manual and reference book.......2000-06-07
This book was my primary source when I was preparing for the CLA exam. Coherent, organized and thoughtful, it is a "must buy" for CLA candidates. Until my book was borrowed (and not returned) by another legal assistant, the manual served as a handy reference manual in my practice.

Leaving no stone unturned, no ergonomic chair unadjusted, and no leftovers in the communal fridge uneaten, this hilarious guide to cubicle life will be the salvation for the more than forty million Americans stuck in cubicles. By turns uproariously funny and enormously useful, each chapter tackles a different area of cubicle life and includes a “cube tip,” a quiz, illustrations, and examples that will have you laughing out loud. Discover
• how not to disturb colleagues with unwanted sounds and smells, such as the crunch-crunch of your sour-cream-and-onion chips and the unmistakable odor of your spicy Thai shrimp
• how to knock when visiting other cubicles and how to devise politically correct ways of saying “Do not disturb”
• the do’s and definite don’ts of cubicle decoration
• how to set up a security system that will rebuff potential thieves
The Cubicle Survival Guide could very well change your life and set you climbing the corporate ladder to success!*
* Results not guaranteed. Pay raises and promotions are up to your boss, but using this book
couldn’t hurt.
Praise for The Cubicle Survival Guide:

"James Thompson’s The Cubicle Survival Guide offers the rare, and definitely appreciated, combination of laugh-out-loud humor and sound advice for surviving the jungle that is Corporate America. On some days, there’s nothing more motivating to fresh air-starved cube dwellers than a book that will simply crack them up. This is that book.”
— Alexandra Levit, Author,
They Don’t Teach Corporate in College
"If you must work (and I don't recommend it), The Cubicle Survival Guide provides a wonderful way to slack off and stay entertained. You can easily kill two weeks with this book."

Customer Reviews:
If you like this book you are a nerd, the kind that wears dockers up to your navel and plays D&D until you're well into your 70s.......2007-07-13
I fail to see the humor in this book. I work in an office and I find the book to be perpetuating the same sort of eerily conformist corporate culture that the book jacket claims the book will lampoon. This book is for robots who have given up their humanity and want to pretend to laugh at their own misfortune. It's less "Office Space" and more "Human Resources Instructional Video: Now in Book Form!" Still waiting for the punch line...
An amusing idea that couldn't sustain an entire book.......2007-06-21
This book is like a good SNL skit idea turned into a bad movie. It makes long-winded, ironically intended observations about cubicle life that often left me yawning. If you have never worked before, it might be slightly useful to you. Otherwise, I'd say its practical advice is obvious. And its humor is luke-warm.
good humor.......2007-04-24
Fun book to read, although I was lost towards the last chapters especially when locking things done in your cube, using "Caution - Yellow Police Tape". It would attrack more looks to your area, which counterpoints his claims. Anyway, if someone at your office is out to get you, they will get you. So be aware of your surroundings, and be a good corporate citizend. That is all. And yes, I definitely recommend a Rear View mirror. I have one from a co-worker which was his car's sideview mirror, and it does say "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear". Good book, Mr. Thompson!
Fun book about an unfun place.......2007-03-31
What a fun read! I really enjoyed Thompson's take on life in an office. It's a hoot, but the humor couches some actual-factual advice that readers can truly use. If you've ever worked in an office, there will be more than one passage you wish your current or former co-workers would read and take to heart.
show u care!.......2007-03-27
This was a really funny book that anyone can appreciate. Filled with great "survival" advice, I think it would be a great "cube farm initiation 101" gift for the college graduate entering the corporate world!

microsoft.......2006-01-06
I would disagree with many people on this book due to the fact that this book is very helpful on using codes and debugging tools although its a definition guide on computer programming in windows 2000 it can teach you a lot of details on programming it is more like a beginners guide using many symbols and differnt codes this book is more of a book for people wanting to learn how to write files store files also deals with rewritting web pages or possibley a guide on how to develop folders spreadsheets graphs and many othe features i would say this book is really great for anyone wanting to learn c programming in windows environment as well as in the assembly language or DOS enviroment; although this book does not teach you assembly language programming it is a way to start learning assembly language programming1
Falls short in creating realistic applications.......2002-08-17
I would agree with the review that states the authors were working side-by-side with the office development team as this book was written. However, I would disagree that such close input was entirely helpful. While the information contained in this book is a nice introduction to how things are "supposed" to work, as with so much of Microsoft's software, things never quite work the way they were designed, unless of course, you're doing exactly what the folks at Microsoft assumed you would do. Not only do some examples in this book fail to work, most examples are simple and obvious, the kind of thing a person might generate from looking at Microsoft's help information. Often they illustrate how the designers assumed their software would work. They often fail to demonstrate what the software can do--or much more important--how to get around the artificial limitations set by Microsoft. Some simple examples involve such basic building blocks as dialog boxes and menus (commandbars in Micro-speak). Some built-in dialog boxes have over a dozen arguments, but try finding out what those arguments do from either this book or from Microsoft's help information. As for the commandbars, even the examples from the book fail to work.
My advice? If you want to know what Microsoft intended, get this book. If you want to use Microsoft Office in a real world situation, keep looking.
Excellent Office-wide book.......2002-01-10
It's very hard to find a book on VBA that isn't based in one application, and doesn't begin at the 'Hello World' level. This book does neither. Instead it provides a good introduction to the object models of the Office applications, and includes well-written code examples. The breadth of content is impressive--from shared Office components to class modules. What a pity it's out of print!
Like walking the halls at microsoft.......2000-09-10
The intro materials in this book reveal that the authors were working side-by-side with the office development team as this book was written. Such direct access to the people who know the most about the product is unusual and it shows in this book. A collection of truly "useful" information and sample code. This is not a rehash of online help or a collection of the "basic" programming info found in a lot of reference books. The discussion generally gives you useful information and, the part I like the most, gives you sample code that works just the way it is in my own programs. This is not sample code of the type "MyControl.Backcolor = Red" that I see so much of. It appears that a real effort was made to write code that not only illustrates a concept, but that is usable in other contexts without much, or any, modification.
Thanks for the resource....check it out - you will not be disappointed.
Info for developers.......2000-07-06

Love this book.......2007-03-29
I grabbed this book on Amazon with my expectations very high. When this book arrived I read it in one night! A must-read this book talks about how to become a real office spy and experiences of other spies. I wish there was one about home espionage.
Very Useful, More Than Enough Info for Any Working Stiff.......2005-03-24
I picked up a copy of this title from a local Barnes & Noble bookstore. Oddly enough, the title was shelved in the humor section, which didn't make much sense to me as the book isn't particularly entertaining but takes a rather serious, right-to-the-point approach to the business of using questionable means to further your career.
The Spy's Guide: Office Espionage will tech you how to: take an impression of a key for duplication, secure a hotel room, check your conference room for bugs, bug a conference room, reassemble shredded documents, copy documents without leaving a trace as to what copier was used, conceal objects in a bottle of water, sneak into a tradeshow without being noticed, use your cell phone to your advantage, make untraceable phone calls and faxes, keep your private conversations private and much more.
As slim as this volume is, it is surprisingly through and complete. For your average working stiff, this will be more than adequate for taking your game to the next level.
Looking for an edge? This one's for you.......2004-08-17
Anybody who works in business or in an office should get this book. Even if you don't use everything in it, other people may be using the methods it contains. If you know what's goin on, you have the upper hand. There's at least 1 thing in here that everyone can use, and that 1 thing I'm sure would be worth your $10 investment.
The How to Guide to Successfully Spying on Your Co-Workers.......2004-07-19
I firmly believe that not all books are meant to be taken seriously. This is a horrible thing for a book critic to admit, no? I mean, how can I be unbiased in my reviews if I think some books should be regarded in more esteem than others?
There are some books that are created for little more than pleasure. I don't think these books serve a lesser purpose. I think that grocery store romance novels provide entertainment and possible delight to their readers. Someone I know once purchased a connect-the-dots book of pornography to give as a birthday gift. That book possibly offered hours of entertainment. Every time I graduate, someone gives me an inspirational book of quotes. Sure, some of them are good, but after a quick read through, what am I supposed to do with it? Tape the quotes to my bathroom mirror? Um, no.
The Spy's Guide to Office Espionage by H. Keith Melton and Craig Piligian with Duane Sweirczynski offers little more than brief entertainment. (I suppose for people who are truly set on bugging their co-workers, it also acts as a convenient How To guide.) In The Spy's Guide, readers learn how to booby-trap their briefcase (because so many of us use those anymore...), monitor co-worker's hours, read a competitor's laptop and communicate with invisible inks. Good stuff, right?
My main issue with The Spy's Guide is that I got better advice watching reruns of Get Smart on Nick at Nite. Most of the tips given by the authors, retired CIA and KGB spies, are good only if you are seriously neurotic about the behavior of your co-workers or professional competitors, or have the extra time to spend following them around, sending anonymous emails and protecting your trash.
What makes The Spy's Guide an entertaining read though are the real life stories by the retired spies where they account instances of using the tips they impart in this book. Fortunately, these "Spies at Work" segments occur with regular frequency. (By the end of the book, these were the only sections I read, because frankly, I ain't looking through anyone's trash. And for people who want to look through mine? Have fun.)
One funny tip I enjoyed was going to a meeting where some negotiating will take place. Before entering, call yourself on one cell phone and when you answer, leave both phones on. Mid-way through negotiations, go to the bathroom, accidentally leaving one phone on the table with your notebook. While in the bathroom, listen on the other phone to what is occurring in the meeting in your absence. This could help you throw out the right salary, offer, etc.
Another fun tip was to conceal things in water bottles. The hidden object would be surrounded by water and a the bottled water's label. What makes this funny is that housewives have been doing this for years - hiding mad money in jars of beans with a cavity in the middle. Heck, in seventh and eighth grade my friends and I used to pass notes to each other concealed in pens, instead of having in k in the pen. What teacher could fault you for borrowing a pen when you ink ran out?
Is The Spy's Guide to Office Espionage worth your time to read? Probably not. Is it a funny gift to give to someone else? Definitely. It's best use though is to have it lying around the office. I told my boss what I was reviewing and you should have seen the look on his face!
not bad...could have been better.......2004-06-21
I read this book and got only a few things out of it. I am not into Office Espionage but had it done to me. I have a lot to protect and when people started coming against me I needed an advantage, so I got this book. Not bad I must say. Some things I already knew while others made me take the time and try. This is a decent investment for only say 10 bucks. I was looking for more and got less. But I don't regret buying it. It is a little gem.

Expensive but Enlightening.......2000-08-02
This book was very enlightening in the aspect of the features of Microsoft Office 2000 yet it was a very pricey title. The book comes with pages full of information and screen shots so you know exactly what to do and how to do it. This book is definately good for those who want to learn all about the features of Microsoft Office and know how to use them. The book also cover everything in depth and explains everything FULLY, so you don't have to wonder what the next step is. A must read -- if you feel like waiting on it ;)

The Worst Reference Book Ever Encountered.......2006-03-09
After struggling for seven years to learn Word Visual Basic using this book as a reference, I have decided that its greatest value is as waste paper. It would be a disservice to give it to anyone. I have mastered six programming languages from language reference manuals, and my software has been used at five planets and the moon, so I speak advisedly. This book might be useful to someone with weeks to spend doing nothing but reading it from cover to cover. But for those whose time is more valuable, don't waste it here! In its index, "Operators" doesn't appear, there are no entries for N,X,Y,and Z, and only one entry each for J and K and three for G. Its table of contents is almost useless. No author is mentioned, only a "Project Editor". For a reference at the opposite extreme, buy Francesco Balena's "Programming Microsoft Visual Basic 2005: The Language" ISBN 0735621837. Published 2006.
Lacking in any substance or merit.......2000-08-02
I bought this book looking for a guide to various office objects, methods, etc. I found this book to have no real substance. It does an inadequate job of explaining what objects are out there, how to use them, and what they are for. I was primarily looking for Excel references, but have since found this book to be useless for Outlook and Access as well. Not being new to VB, VBA, or VBScript, I find this book good neither for beginners OR advanced users.
When I thought it was impossible,..... I thought wrong!.......1999-03-11
An excellent book. I used it primarily for my Word Application that automatically creates a report from existing Access97 Database. What could not be accomplished using MailMerge had to be done using DAO and this book was definitely a gem. I doubt I could have completed my task without this book. It should be on the bookshelf of every VBA programmer!
Well laid out and informative. The MS Office Object Bible........1998-08-05
A great reference book. I can resolve most of my VB Office Object issues by thumbing through the Table of Contents and finding the appropriate topic matter page. The book is truly easy to read, yet informative.
A Great Reference For VBA.......1998-05-29
This book has proven itself to be a great reference source for developing Office 97 integrated solutions. I have been able to provide company solutions which allow inserting and extracting of information between the Office 97 Word, Access and Outlook that has saved hours of work.
This book combined with the on-line help system is esstenial for tailoring Office 97 to your companies needs.
