Book Description

There are several other books on the market that serve as in-depth technical guides or reference books for CSS. None, however, take a more hands-on approach and use practical examples to teach readers how to solve the problems they face in designing with CSS - until now. Eric Meyer provides a variety of carefully crafted projects that teach how to use CSS and why particular methods were chosen. The web site includes all of the files needed to complete the tutorials in the book. In addition, bonus information is be posted.

4 out of 5 stars Look over a Master's shoulder.......2006-07-29

Awesome learn by example book IF you already have a little background in CSS, and even then if your knowledge is elementary you might be lost on some of the finer points. If it had a little more theory and explanations it would be a killer book, but I guess Eric Meyer didn't have patience enough for that. He is anyway a Master in CSS styling, no doubts about that, and the right author too look at for learning and inspiration. The book is structured around several projects that you see in the various developing stages from beginning to end in reasonably small steps. The explanations of what's going on are like what you would expect from a guru/designer/artist that is, far from complete and basic. Again is like you had the chance to peek over Eric's shoulder while he works, but he won't be bothered to lose too much of his time after you. But don't get me wrong, this book is a must have for anyone interested in CSS, even if I would not buy it now (it starts being a bit dated) but would wait for his next book that should come out this autumn.

5 out of 5 stars Second to none!.......2006-06-06

I wanted a quick crash course in CSS; instead this book gave me a comprehensive start that led me on a path to a solid foundation in designing with Cascading Style Sheets.

Attention to details, comprehensive and professional writing style, and superior clarity are just some of the strengths of this book. I only wish that more IT books were as easy to read as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference about CSS.......2006-04-26

The first seen this book seems one more technical guide about CSS, but to the first contact realizes that it is a great reference based on needs to everyday of the web designer.
The book starts boarding how to initiate layout HTML transition for layout hybrid (still with the tables use but of optimized way), and with that goes gradually preparing the reader to think and to create the such wished Layout CSS (Tableless).
Besides talking about CSS he shows how to conceive a semantically correct code HTML and thus obtain a more organized and accessible structure.
This book boards the structure and presentation separation concept, positioning CSS, columns in CSS, leaves creation of alternative style, forms and effects presentation in links, lists and images.
The book Eric Mayer on CSS is one of the best references about CSS who already I saw, and can tell that he is indispensable in the web designer library.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to give your HTML a make over.......2006-04-21

Before skimming through "Eric Meyer on CSS" I expected an introductory level CSS tutorial book that would provide readers with step-by-step instructions on how to create efficient CSS layouts. The back cover lists standard concepts that are covered in the book in addition to an accurate depiction of Eric Meyer's professional experience level and expert ability with CSS [...]. Yet, after reading the introduction and beginning the first few chapters, I quickly learned this book is ideal for persons with a solid foundation in HTML and at least a basic understanding of CSS. For example, project 1 (i.e. chapter 1) illustrates how to remove HTML markup and replace it with CSS layout, but does not go into detail about the HTML markup and mentions CSS properties/terminology as a side note rather than main point.

I think a major selling point of "Eric Meyer on CSS" is its excellent project based approach to CSS; each project can be completed in a single session and built my proficiency and confidence upon chapter completion. Additionally, the chapter layout is quite organized and easy to follow with full support and completed files available from the book's website. For example, the necessary steps for each project are incorporated into the main body of the text with illustrations and easily identifiable code. Go to the website to double check for accuracy or help troublshoot your work. Definitions, clarifications, warnings, and sample code links are neatly laid out in the columns to the side of the text's main body. Depending upon your comfort level of CSS, it is easy to skip around chapters and projects or work straight through.

An inconveniencing aspect of this book is that the CSS is difficult to reference. While the index lists the page numbers to CSS functions, the CSS is incorporated into any number of projects/tutorials, which may or may not be useful for the task you are performing. This book transforms HTML pages into CSS efficient pages; this is a positive consistent quality throughout "Eric Meyer on CSS", but it may have less relevance for people wishing to create HTML + CSS pages from scratch. In future versions of this book, I think it would be interesting to note layout differences between HTML versions and include CSS for XHTML.

Overall, I found "Eric Meyer on CSS" a transformational book for HTML and CSS and I give it the highest possible rating. I recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in CSS or who may use CSS on a quasi regular basis. It is a fine addition to any level (i.e. introductory, intermediate, advanced) CSS library or small collection. Essentially this book taught me how to do professional quality HTML "make overs" with CSS in a manner of speaking; it taught me how to convert HTML pages into more efficient and attractive pages using CSS.

4 out of 5 stars CSS Case Study Book.......2006-04-10

Being a fan of Eric Meyer's previous book on CSS, I was pretty keen on what to expect from 'Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design' in terms of quality. Mr. Meyer's original CSS book was a top notch piece of work when it first came out, and it's a great book today. Like HTML books, there are lots of options available to people if you want to learn how to develop CSS book from a design perspective, but there are not many books out there that look at the subject from a case study point of view.

Look no further.

In the author's book, he takes exactly this route, defining 13 projects, and the nuts of bolts of each one of these projects as it relates to CSS design. Headlined by full color pages and clear, concise writing, this is a book that is easy to read and enjoyable to follow.

The problem is that the things that make this book so unique are also its weakness.

While a case study approach sounds good on paper and it IS interesting, the fact that unless you plan to copy the exact design that Mr. Meyer is using, this text is little more than just a nice reference to relate to. Being different doesn't mean one is wrong, but unless the reader knows what to expect, they might be disappointed by this text.

What this book IS: a case study book that points out different uses of CSS on web pages, highlighting certain tips and tricks that were put to use to get the desired effect

What this book IS NOT: a reference book or a learning tool of how to get CSS working with web pages. This book fully expects the reader to have some understanding/experience of CSS, and they are looking to get further education beyond the bachelor's degree in CSS that they already got (perhaps from reading CSS: The Definitive Reference).

Nice book, but different. Keep that in mind when considering purchasing this text.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Volume-Somewhat brief.......2007-07-02

I found that this text was more an advanced tutorial than it was a standard textbook. The format was a little informal for my taste. Nonetheless, the Author was clearly knowledgeable, and the book provides a lot of necessary information. I was a little taken aback by how little advantage a knowledge of Autocad is in using the more advanced software

4 out of 5 stars Excellent text but missing items.......2007-03-15

The text is very well written and explains the topics in more than adequate detail. However, there is supposed to be an accompanying CD with files that follow along with the text that would be helpful, but we never received the CD, not in the book nor a separate delivery. Aside from that, we are very happy with the information contained within the text itself.

5 out of 5 stars 2007 ADT Tutorial.......2007-03-13

I'm approximately one third of the way through the book. I've been using ACAD for approximately twenty years and I agree with the author that having some ACAD experience is helpful, perhaps essential in learning this software. I'm using it to teach myself and even though the book is excellent, nothing beats being able to ask someone a question when you're stuck. This is very complexe software and if you have a problem, you're left to your own devices. I come from a mechanical engineering background and don't know a soul familiar with ADT. The book is well written and illustrated but you have to read very closely to avoid errors in the exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Mastering Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2007.......2007-02-19

Has excellent tutorials, but difficult to look up a problem.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-10-03

WOW DICK COOK... do you even know what you are talking about? I thought this book was insighful and well thought out. It covered several different angles for beginers. This is who the book is aimed for. This book is not directed toward the more experienced players. Well done Mr. Fischman, well done.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-08-21

Not one worthwhile idea in this book. For beginners try Lee Jones..Intermediate..Mat Hilger and advanced Harrington. They are worthwhile books. Tis one is not!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2007-07-09

Not a bad book, it does have a lot of useful tid bits inside the pages, but the book will not really challenge your thinking and insight to the game. If you're a beginner this book may be a useful read, but if you've been playing for a while and past the beginner stage, you might want to look at some other more in depth material.

5 out of 5 stars Improved my INSIGHT and MIND!.......2007-06-15

****1/2
This was my second poker book and first online book. I have been playing off and on for about 7 years now and this book has helped my game tremendously, specifically online, but not exclusively either. Scott gives you a lot to think about during the game and also helps you to think on different levels and how your emotions and mind come into play whether playing online or live games. There were many excellent tips and anecdotes from well know pros as well, both online and brick and mortar. There is a great pace to the book - it is a very quick and easy read. Lastly, another nice feature is the multitude of pointers for sit-n-go's, tournaments, and cash/ring games!

The only drawback might be the lack of mention of odds in general, which do play a large part in poker, but that should be a given anyway. This can be learned from many other books anyway. I highly recommend this book to just about anyone, beginners and advanced players alike. You will certainly become a better player with all of the great strategies and insights provided. And, in turn, hopefully you can make much more money! Best of luck always!

4 out of 5 stars Good book for both experienced and inexperienced players.......2007-03-16

Scott Fischman is a guy who was once a dealer who went on to win a couple of World Series of Poker bracelets including one for the HORSE event. This interested me. (Yes, I used to play basketball and remember Bob McAdoo of the Lakers who was a deadly shot at HORSE, about whom it was said--by Michael Cooper--"You do, McAdoo.") But I digress.

HORSE in poker stands for Hold'em, Omaha hilo, Razz, Stud, and stud Eight or better. It's spread in some clubs, but you can almost always find some limit games at PokerStars and other places on the Internet. A round is played of hold'em and then a round of Omaha eight or better, then a round of razz, which is stud lowball, and then a round of regular stud and then stud hilo, and the cycle is repeated. You have to be a pretty good all-around player to be successful at HORSE, and anybody who can beat that game regularly earns my respect.

This book, like many others published in the wake of the TV- and Internet-turboed rise of poker, is directed at beginners or near beginners. The "Mastering Internet Poker" in the subtitle is justified however because Fischman reveals a lot about his overall approach to the game of poker, especially his psychological approach. For Fischman the most important psychology in the game is self-psychology.

There is plenty of strategy presented throughout the book and some explanations given on how to play various hands in various situations; but mainly Fischman concentrates on his overall approach to the games. In a sense this is a hybrid book: part "how-to" and part "how-I-did-it."

Fischman is not a deep strategic master of the game or a mathematical whiz. He is a "by the seat of your pants" player with a wealth of experience both online and in the brick and mortar clubs. His advice on tournament strategy, especially online Sit-N-Go's is excellent. He divides the tournament, one-table or otherwise, into three "seasons," the beginning when blinds are small relative to stacks; the middle, when the size of your stack begins to dictate decisions; and the endgame, when many or most decisions will involve all your chips and your tournament life.

In the "beginning" he likes to "look for spots where I can safely--or as close to safely as poker allows--double my stack. Otherwise, I've got no business being in the hand." (p. 71) In the middle he likes to start making small raises often with the idea of picking up the blinds from his now very careful opponents. In the endgame, Fischman becomes super-aggressive. One excellent idea of his is that near the bubble when many players start to play very carefully you can steal a lot of pots. He believes that in Sit-N-Gos you should aim to finish first, not just in the money because of the big difference between first place money (usually 50% of the prize fund) and third place (usually 20%). So he advises, don't be afraid of finishing fourth and out of the money. A first and a fourth are better than two third-place finishes.

Also interesting is Fischman's take on "multi-tabling" online. He believes that playing several tables at once not only allows the expert to win more money, it allows the expert to get into the zone and become "the Robot," as he calls himself when he is just one with the decisions, one after another in front of him on his computer screen. His idea is that because multi-tabling is so demanding on your attention it forces you to focus. You don't have time to worry about bad beats or time to over-analyze. You are a Robot, focused, decisive and unemotional. Yes, you miss subtleties and some opportunities, but you don't try to do too much and you go with your first instinct which is often right.

Fischman tends to the superstitious, which of course is NOT recommended. However he justifies it from a psychological point of view by noting that if something makes you feel confident that will help you win. So it's okay to depend a little on that lucky shirt, and yes it may very well be the case as you drive into the club and see all those license plates with the poker hands on them, "KAA 555," etc., that yes you ARE going to be lucky today!

Some of Fischman's recommendations on how to play specific hands in specific situations go against the grain of the conventional wisdom. But here again I found his ideas interesting. Sometimes he seems clearly "wrong" or maybe just doesn't make himself clear. For example on page 125 he writes about tables being broken down later in a tournament as players are eliminated. He notes that he doesn't like being moved to a new table after having made some rebuys because "I want to have the chance to win back the chips I have lost. I can't do that if the players I've been kind enough to 'loan' my chips to are suddenly scattered throughout the tournament. There's nothing worse that rebuying 10 times, having your table broken down, then finding yourself at a new table where no one has purchased a rebuy."

Unless I'm missing something, this seems plainly illogical because it doesn't matter from whom he wins chips. He still has the same number of chips and the same relative chance of winning the tournament. I think what he must mean is that while losing those chips he picked up some valuable information about those players and now can't use that information.

What is obvious from reading this very readable book is that Scott Fischman is one heck of a good poker player and that his strength is in his overall approach to the game, some of which comes shining forth from these pages. I think both experienced players and beginners will find something of value here.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books on the subject.........2007-02-03

I'm a working digitial media pro; a 15 vet, and I like this book. It is substantially clearer and better organized than others I have purchased. Comprehensive, decent glossary.

It ain't the be-all-end-all, but it sits proudly on my desk as a late-night on-hand reference whilst I struggle to hit another ambitious deadline.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2007-01-11

Really enjoyed this book. It was a simple read of complex terms. I have so many computer type books but none like this one where I could read from start to finish and really learn the technologies.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent technical overview of online video.......2006-08-21

This book goes into the high level technical details of creating an online video service. As an absolute newcomer to the field, I found it an invaluable tool for dealing with the knowledgeable professionals that I rely on to do such things as analog to digital conversion and the set-up and maintenance of media servers. This book will not give you the expertise to do any of these jobs - for that you have to get your hands dirty and actually perform some of the tasks yourself. But it will give you a grasp of the concepts and terminology you'll need to manage the issues that come up.

The book is solid all the way through, but some topics are treated with more detail than others. The sections at the start about video capture, compression, and file formats are in depth and somewhat technical. Later section, including one on transport protocols and DRM, are considerably more vague, probably because they are such complex topics that even an overview takes up the alloted space. Still, when I was able to dive into the details of capturing video from analog sources, compressing it, and setting up the software to serve it, but I could not have even begun to attack the problems of setting up a transport standard or a DRM scheme.

It should also be noted that one chapter out of the 8 provided is on a topic (enterprise multicast) that is not relevant to most consumer focused video services.

If you're going to be involved with online video at all, this book is an excellent technical overview. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars For the beginner..........2006-08-01

...This is the best book I've come across on the subject. There are a lot of articles and other books that just throw these terms at you without them really being understood. This book shows you how other media (TV, film, dvd) are put together and how they can be converted to become internet content.

maybe all your questions will not be answered, but at least now you can ask intelligent questions.

5 out of 5 stars Truly understand streaming technology in plain language.......2005-02-19

The author does a great job of explaining streaming in great detail for the layman or more advanced user in plain easy to understand language. This book is good for web master, video engineer, student, or just about anyone who has an interest in a detailed guide about Internet video.

I found this book easy to read and understand. It is very complete in regard to today's technology. I have recommended it to several of my co-workers. A feel this book is required reading for anyone looking to deploy streaming into their organization. Damien Stolarz seems to be a person that is not just a tech writer but a seasoned engineer that has spend much time in the trenches of Internet video. This book is well worth the money.

Regular expressions are a central element of UNIX utilities like egrep and programming languages such as Perl. But whether you're a UNIX user or not, you can benefit from a better understanding of regular expressions since they work with applications ranging from validating data-entry fields to manipulating information in multimegabyte text files. Mastering Regular Expressions quickly covers the basics of regular-expression syntax, then delves into the mechanics of expression-processing, common pitfalls, performance issues, and implementation-specific differences. Written in an engaging style and sprinkled with solutions to complex real-world problems, Mastering Regular Expressions offers a wealth information that you can put to immediate use.

Book Description

Regular expressions are an extremely powerful tool for manipulating text and data. They have spread like wildfire in recent years, now offered as standard features in Perl, Java, VB.NET and C# (and any language using the .NET Framework), PHP, Python, Ruby, Tcl, MySQL, awk, Emacs, and many other popular tools and languages. If you don't use regular expressions yet, you will discover in this book a whole new world of mastery over your data. If you already use them, you'll appreciate this book's unprecedented detail and breadth of coverage. If you think you know all you need to know about regular expressions, this book is a stunning eye-opener. In spite their wide availability, flexibility, and unparalleled power, regular expressions are frequently underutilized. Regular expressions allow you to code complex and subtle text processing that you never imagined could be automated. Regular expressions can save you time and aggravation. They can be used to craft elegant solutions to a wide range of problems. A command of regular expressions is an invaluable skill. Yet what is power in the hands of an expert can be fraught with peril for the unwary.

Mastering Regular Expressions will help you navigate the minefield to becoming an expert. Once you've mastered regular expressions, they'll become an invaluable part of your toolkit. You will wonder how you ever got by without them. Mastering Regular Expressions, Second Edition has been thoroughly updated to include all the new features of Perl 5.8, as well as several other languages, including Java, VB.NET, C#, Python, JavaScript, Tcl, and Ruby. Written in the lucid, entertaining tone that made a complex, dry topic crystal-clear to thousands of programmers, and sprinkled with solutions to complex real-world problems, Mastering Regular Expressions offers a wealth information that you can put to immediate use. 5 out of 5 stars More than expected........2007-08-24

I have been in computer software developer over 7 years now and never really used regular expression until a year ago. True, you can live without it. But, with regular expression at hand, you climb up another level of programming. Code will be much concise and code research will be like a breeze.

Anyway, I didn't read this book entirely since later chapters explain intricacies and subtle differences of each specific language, e.g., java, perl, php, etc. It didn't take long to apply the knowledge I gained to real work and benefit. By the time I completed the first chapter, I already started to get rewards. My life is a lot easier now.

Even with only the first 3 chapters, this book is well worth its price. The author did superb job explaining what's going on behind the scene and guide you through the right way of constructing regular expressions for various situations. Of course, he will show you common pitfalls to avoid, too. Very detailed and comprehensive.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best Regex material I've ever read.......2007-08-16

Before reading this book, I would have considered myself an intermediate regexer. After the first 2 chapters, I realized how novice I really was. Having only made it through 5 chapters of this book, I can't say enough about it. The detail and step-by-step analysis that Mr. Friedl takes to describe the regex matching process is the best I've ever seen. It's little things that make the analysis easy to follow -- like the brackets he uses to mark the regex, and the small triangle cursor to show where the engine is in the matching process. I continue to look forward to each new chapter. Thank you for a wonderful work of art.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2007-05-23

Are you a programmer working on text-related tasks? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Jeffrey Friedl, has done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that will interest anyone who has an opportunity to use regular expressions.

Friedl, begin with an introduction to the concept of regular expressions. Then, the author takes a look at text processing with regular expressions. Next, the author provides an overview of features and utilities, plus a bit of history. He also explains the details of how regular expressions work. The author continues by working through regular expressions examples. Then, he discusses efficiency in detail. Next, the author covers Perl regular expressions in detail. He then looks at Sun's java.util.regex package. The author continues by looking at .NET's language-neutral regular-expression package. Finally, the author looks at PHP's preg suite of regex functions.

This most excellent book should expand your understanding, even if you consider yourself an accomplished regular-expression expert. Perhaps more importantly, the book concentrates on mastering a particular implementation!

4 out of 5 stars Good Information.......2007-05-07

Many people only barely utilize regular experssions, having been unable to get more than basic expressions to work. There are a lot of reasons for this - shell escapes, man pages that are terse to the point of being cryptic, etc. This book is a clear and very readable trip through practical regular expression creation and application that will enable the reader to get the most out of grep, awk, perl and other programs that use regular expressions.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate book for the ultimate demands - For an introduction just too heavy weight.......2007-05-03

Jeffrey Friedl describes regular expressions at an amazing depth and precision. Regular expressions are not easy and the quirks of the different tools (including their exact version and for what operating system) make writing them to an irritating black art. A black art to almost anybody. MRE sorts everything out in a comprehensible fashion. The price the reader has to pay: a very dense book, a need to follow the details until your head starts swimming and a lot of strain on the memory about what works, how and where.

MRE is somewhat easier to comprehend for a reader with a strong Pearl background. Also a good prior understanding to regular expressions is a true asset here. If you have neither, you do not need to despair. Jeffrey Friedl explains everything thoroughly from the ground up.

The writing style is very pedagogical. Important things get repeated quite often. Still this book is very dense. The flow is dry: no rhythm, special sense of humor or wit sweetens your wading through the material. Nevertheless Jeffrey Friedl kept my interest through the pages though the reading felt like hard work.

I do recommend this book to the truly dedicated reader.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent book for advanced users.......2004-09-09

I really like this book. It is not for beginners, and is not an "Intro to J2EE". However, for advanced developers, and especially those leaning towards the administation aspects of WebLogic Server, this book is an excellent resource.
The examples in this book are straighforward, and the accompianing discussion is well written and easy to follow.
A lot of discussions in this book cover advanced topics leaning towards deployment and administration (such as tuning JVMs, or understanding Thread usage), but there are some excellent discussions regarding architecture as well. There is not a lot of material discussing developing J2EE code.
This book should be a part of any advanced J2EE developers library, especially those using WebLogic (since so many of the examples are targeted towards that platform).

5 out of 5 stars Followup........2004-04-15

I've already reviewed this book previously but had to comment on the reviews by the "reader from Danbury, CT".

I'm not sure what your problem is but I don't see the value in panning a book you either didn't read or understand. My only other guess is that you have some sort of other agenda.

I guess it is just common sense to ignore anonymous reviews.

1 out of 5 stars Not detailed enough.......2004-04-09

The book does not have detailed explanations - it just brushes the surface of a few topics. It does not really talk about the internals of WebLogic.

I bought this book and now will sell it on amazon or something. Glad that my company paid for it :)

1 out of 5 stars Outdated already !! Does not cover sp 2.......2004-03-16

This book contains nothing about sp2. It covers sp1 and that too not very accurately. Although the book is very well written, it lacks the depth of explanation - and assumes a lot. It is ok for the advanced readers, but beginners beware.

1 out of 5 stars A very poorly written book.......2006-08-01

I tried using this book to find out a specific item of information and it contained no examples on something that is a basic part of building web pages. Finally found the answer (and even with a good explanation!) in a dummies book. This book is only good to feed a fire!

1 out of 5 stars Belying!.......2006-04-11

I also wonder why the author has named the book "Web Development with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005" although it just covers the Visual Web Developer, and just a very shor part is about VS 2005. I wanted to know how to put the application on the production server, especially how to transfer the database through VS to the server, but it's not possible to find even a small hint there. I am disappointed and sorry about wasting my time and mony for this book and find the author irresponsible for the wrong entitling his book and spoofing the people.

Regards

2 out of 5 stars Very little about VS 2005!.......2006-02-01

I downloaded the eBook and within a couple of minutes realised that it only had one Chapter specifically abour VS 2005. As the first para in Chapter 1 point out:
"When you installed Visual Studio .NET 2005, you might have been surprised to find a bonus-Visual
Web Developer. This new product fills a gap in the Visual Studio product line and is Microsoft's recognition
that Web development has become a major part of the application market." So the book is about Visual Web Developer and should have been entitled as such.
There is a chapter later in the book about migrating your VS 2003 projects and the final chapter ( Chapter 25! ) has the following "This chapter addresses the code movement process from a little project to big project perspective.
It assumes that you've experimented with Visual Web Developer Express and now need the full capabilities
that Visual Studio can provide." Too little too late... Unless you want to find out about Visual Web Developer, buy something else.

4 out of 5 stars Confusion about what product this book is about!.......2005-12-20

I purchased this book because I suddenly discovered that the personal ecommerce website that I had hoped to do in Macromedia Studio 8 couldn't be done because Macromedia Studio 8 doesn't support ASP.NET 2.0 - and ASP.NET 2.0 has some amazing new functionality that I won't give up to use Macromedia. So I decided I needed to use Visual Studio 2005. I played with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition for a couple of weeks until Visual Studio 2005 Professional finally arrived. I was very impressed with VWD 2005 Express Edition but it lacks some features that you need for a full function commercial site. I am writing this review before I have gone into this book in sufficient detail to be able to answer my own questions because I feel that other potential buyers should be aware of the issues that I feel need to be resolved.

I saw this book and bought it here on Amazon because it seemed that it might have some valuable content on Visual Studio 2005 - and there is very little information available about VS 2005 at this moment except the Microsoft literature. Now I am confused about the book because I really can't determine what product the author was using when he wrote the book. The book is about a product called Microsoft Visual Web Developer - not about either Visual Studio 2005 Professional or Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition. It appears that there is valuable content here and although the product he was using was probably pretty close to Visual Studio 2005 Professional the author definitely writes about functionality that I cannot yet find in Visual Studio 2005 Professional. My issue is that I really would like to know up front what functionality that the book covers is not included in VS 2005. Of course it's possible that I will find a hidden configuration option in VS 2005 that will suddenly turn it into Visual Web Developer but in one place in the book the author says that he is writing a book on Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition - but I can't find reference to it anywhere. My guess is that he was writing on an early beta of VS 2005 but that a number of changes have occurred between when he wrote and what is being shipped. I am an optimistic and will give the book 4 stars now because of what appears to be valuable content, but that rating could go up to 5 stars or down to 2 stars depending on how close the material is to what I need to understand Visual Studio 2005 Professional. Also I was bothered by the fact that within 15 minutes after opening the book the binding began to fall apart.

I have contacted the author to try and answer this question but as of the writing of this review have not gotten back a response.

I just quit working for a direct competitor of this guy's business. I am embarrassed to say that many of the poor reviews on this book came from inside the walls of my previous company for competitive reasons. At the time I thought it was funny, harmless and fair game. What was interesting that made me read it the first time was the fact that there were an unusual amount of copies floating around. I thought it was good but felt like I was missing the message. Then I saw another copy sticking out of a box one day. I grabbed it, opened it up and was I amazed. The book was completely marked up and there were pieces of paper inserted with business names written on them. It suddenly came clear to me that our entire business was completely crafted after this guy's book. I've read it again and now I get it. Since then I've left my job for a factory position.

5 out of 5 stars Breadth + Depth.......2007-05-01

Few systems, retail or open source, are as powerful as TYPO3. More than just a typical CMS, it is a complete web application framework. Part of what makes it so popular is the extensibility, allowing developers to create additional functionality. However, TYPO3 is not without its drawbacks. It has a notoriously difficult learning curve, and the admin area leaves quite a bit to be desired as far as usability. TYPO3 has taken off in Europe, winning multiple awards. In the USA though, it has yet to gain a foot-hold.

That is, except for the Web Empowered Church, which uses TYPO3 as the CMS and framework of choice for building church websites. My two latest freelance clients have been two churches with thousands of attendees each week. Each of them makes use of the WEC extensions written for TYPO3, via TypoScript.

So, now that we have a background on what TypoScript is exactly, let's talk about the book Mastering TypoScript. It was written by Daniel Koch, then translated from the original German version to English by Wolfgang Spegg. It presupposes familiarity with TYPO3 and PHP, delving right away into the guts of the system. Here's what I gleaned from the book...
Syntax

The first chapter begins with an introduction of TypoScript which, true to the similarity in name, is somewhat reminiscent of JavaScript. The way that variables and properties are defined looks a bit like JS dot notation and object literal declaration. By way of comparison, here is how JavaScript and TypoScript might look if constructing an object named mustang.

JavaScript - dot notation:

// Create empty object: "mustang"
// and then add properties to it.

var mustang = {};
mustang.manufacturer = 'Ford';
mustang.build = 'American';
mustang.category = 'sport';
mustang.doors = 2;
mustang.passengers = 4;

JavaScript - object literal:

var mustang = {
'manufacturer' = 'Ford';
'build' = 'American';
'category' = 'sport';
'doors' = 2;
'passengers' = 4;
};

TypoScript - dot notation:

mustang = CAR
mustang.manufacturer = TEXT
mustang.manufacturer.value = Ford
mustang.build = TEXT
mustang.build.value = American
mustang.category = TEXT
mustang.category.value = sport
mustang.model = TEXT
mustang.doors = 2
mustang.passengers = 4

TypoScript - object literal:

mustang = CAR
mustang {
manufacturer = TEXT
manufacturer.value = Ford
build = TEXT
build.value = American
category = TEXT
category.value = sport
model = TEXT
doors = 2
passengers = 4
}

As you can see from the above examples, while the syntax is similar, TypoScript is a bit more verbose. It requires specifically describing a values as either TEXT or HTML in order for TYPO3 to handle the values correctly. Values not declared as any type will default to being treated as a number.

With JavaScript, simply enclosing a value in single or double quotes is enough. Numbers which are not contained in quotes are considered numeric values in JavaScript. Additionally, performing math on a number stored as a text will convert it to a number, such as multiplying it by 1.
Rich Text Editor

TYPO3 allows you to control a number of HTML related properties, which arguably should never be handled in markup anyways. These include:

* bgcolor
* bold
* italics
* center
* font size
* font style
* font family
* indentation
* strikethrough
* text color
* underline

This list of discrepancies simply points to aspects of TYPO3 which arose in its formative stages, and remain for legacy support. Any self-respecting web developer knows that purely presentation aspects like those should be left to CSS alone, and should never be embedded in HTML.

Luckily, you can also restrict tools which can be used by content writers. Doing so simply requires specifying an allowTags array. You can conveniently omit deprecated presentational tags, to keep them from being used at all. This way, you pare down some of TYPO3's power, lest it be wielded haphazardly.
Templating

Another interesting thing about TYPO3 is the concept of markers. These are a bit like variables which allow you to plant dynamic content within the skeleton of an HTML document. For instance, if I wanted to have the top-level heading on a page change, I would denote it in the design template like so...

###TITLE_OF_NEWS_STORY###

There is also another method of templating on the horizon, called TemplaVoilà. It makes it possible for TypoScript developers to integrate templates using a visual interface, never having to touch any PHP. I am usually leery of GUI tools because the code the create typically isn't what I'm trying to accomplish on a granular level. However, from what I've heard from TYPO3 gurus, this is not actually creating HTML for you, simply allowing you to map dynamic content to areas of your static page skeleton. See the TYPO3 wiki for more on that.
Graphics

TYPO3 can also handle graphics processing on the server. This requires two PHP libraries to be installed. The first is GDLib, typically enabled in most PHP configurations. The second is ImageMagick, which is great for scaling images to create photo thumbnails. These yield a dizzing array of possible visual effects: adjusting image tone, crop, rotate, invert colors, emboss, scale, shadow, outline - to name a few. These should of course be used sparingly.
Forms

TYPO3 also has a form builder, allowing the admin to create complete forms without necessarily having to know HTML. Mandatory fields can be set for things like sign-up forms, where the user must enter a minimum amount of personal information in order to register for an event. You can also create login forms for certain sections of a site. This would be good for a personnel directory, which you'd not want publicly viewable due to email spam and telemarketers.
Extensions

Chapter 11 covers extensions. There are a few examples given, such as a chat room extension and newsletter extension. It then goes on to explain how you would go about writing your own extension, if you needed additional functionality not covered by existing options.

Chapter 13 is all about how to use TYPO3 in a multilingual environment. Entire sites can be configured to be auto-translated into different languages. While I'm sure these site versions aren't 100% accurate (nothing automated is), it would certainly go a long way to appealing to a broader audience. It supports an impressive number of languages, with the current count at over 30.
Summary

TYPO3 has tremendous breadth and depth, but is not exactly the most user friendly CMS. The fact that there is an entire configuration language dedicated to it makes the learning curve a bit intimidating for newcomers. Additionally, the drabness of the administrative interface is a bit of a turn-off.

However, for the amount of power in customization that it offers, you'd be hard pressed to find another option that runs on PHP. Django is similar in complexity and flexibility, but it's written in Python. Bottom line, if you find yourself working with TYPO3, I'd highly recommend Mastering TypoScript.

5 out of 5 stars Understand TYPO3 and TypoScript.......2007-03-27

TYPO3 is a free, open-source template-based content management system which has a user-friendly workspace for editing and authoring content. The TYPO3 template engine can be used as is or you can add more functionality and customization to the system with the TypoScript language. This book by Daniel Koch will help you understand TYPO3 and TypoScript and how to customize your TYPO3 site layout in several ways including generating dynamic menus and graphics.

Koch begins with an introduction to both TYPO3 and TypoScript. He discusses the building blocks of TypoScript such as objects, properties, operators and data types. Next he introduces a few helpful tools including the Ultra Edit text editor as well as the Constant Editor which is used for editing the standard TYPO3 templates. These design templates are what control the layout of the TYPO3 site. However, these templates are different from the HTML templates you may have encountered. Koch explains these differences and how to use markers, subparts and placeholders to control dynamic content.

Koch then moves on to dynamic menu and image generation. He discusses how you can do a lot of graphic processing with TypoScript from embedding and modifying the size of your images to using GIFBUILDER to generate dynamic images. He also covers how TYPO3 can add shadows and embossing effects. Finally, he covers how to use TypoScript for image caching.

Without a navigation menu, your site visitors will not be able to go beyond the homepage. Koch discusses the creation and customization of dynamic text, graphical and JavaScript based menus with TypoScript. Then he covers using the HMENU object for hierarchical menus. Frames are also used to control the layout of a website and Koch covers TYPO3's IFRAME and IFRAME2 extensions.

Part of your site will require a membership area and login authentication. TYPO3 supports forms, such as a login form, and Koch shows you how to create forms for your site with the Forms Wizard. He discusses how to set up forms with required fields and how to add CSS style. Next, he shows how to use TypoScript and the Front End User Admin and MailformPlus extensions. If you have a large, dynamic driven website you will need database functionality. Koch covers how to program SQL queries within TYPO3.

You may want to add other extensions or create your own extensions. Koch covers both of these topics. He shows how to use the Extension Manager to install and manage several TYPO3 extensions which include a news, chat, newsletter and calendar extensions. Next, he covers how to make your own extensions with Kickstarter.

Once you have your site layout and extensions in place, Koch covers how to use TypoScript to optimize your site, add a multiple language option, and generate PDF pages of your site. Finally, Koch covers the steps needed to make a TYPO3 site search engine friendly.
