1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this CRAM book........2007-01-22

If you want to understand and pass a subject, you have to read the original book (here Introduction to Statistical Quality Control by Montgomery) and try to understand the examples and the concepts in the book. In addition you have to do several exercies in this book to reinforce this understanding. Studying some outlines, highlights and notes prepared by other people won't help you much.

5 out of 5 stars Sacred Book on SQC.......2007-01-12

If you are looking to be well versed on the principle of Statistical Quality Control, then you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great SPC book.......2004-08-14

Used this book in a graduate level course on SPC. The book and the excercises were interesting and highly informative, as are all of Dr. Montgomery's numerous texts. Most concepts are backed up with liberal examples to help understand the theory and cement the concept and their practical applications, and run the whole gamut from management to electrical engineering problems. Many of the tables in the back of the book, such as the random number table, are outdated due to computers, however these may have been dropped in the new version of the text.

5 out of 5 stars good book worst service.......2004-06-30

the book is very good ..no doubt but the service is aweful.

1. on the website they show it is a hardcover book and so i ordered for it but got a soft cover book ...now i have to worry about return or refunds etc...

2. had to wait for 3 weeks to get the book.

3. print quality aweful ...the original book has good color print...the one i received for the same price has a black and white print with very thin see-through pages...

my advice would be to avoid abebooks.com through amazon if possible because the same book is listed for $ 33 on their own website and here they sell it for $ 41 ...so waste ur money if u want.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about SPC.......2003-09-12

As the developer of the QI Macros SPC Software for Excel, customers often call with exotic questions about statistical methods for quality control.

Montgomery's book, more often than not, is the one I turn to for answers that I can't seem to find anywhere else. Even if I do find the answer in another book, it's always easier to understand in Montgomery's. The book is written in a way that makes seemingly incomprehensible statistics understandable. And there are plenty of examples.

If you're looking for a book to help you implement quality control in a small business, Montgomery's book is a bit too much, so you might consider my book on the Small Business Guerrilla Guide to Six Sigma or Six Sigma Simplified.

4 out of 5 stars Modern and practical guide to reliability analysis.......2000-06-13

This text is an extensive and modern treatment of reliability with many practical case studies. It covers many of the standard topics including most of the topics covered in the recent book by Meeker and Escobar (1998) "Statistical Methods for Reliability Data". It is unique in its coverage of warranties (Chapter 17). These authors are very knowledgeable about the literature on warranty analysis and have edited the Product Warranty Handbook published by Marcel Dekker in 1996 and published their own text dedicated solely to that topic ("Warranty Cost Analysis" published by Marcel Dekker in 1994). Emphasis is placed on case studies which are discussed up front in the Overview chapter and treated in detail in Chapter 19.

5 out of 5 stars When theory and practical application go together.......2006-07-31

This book from Prof. K. Trivedi is another great guide for the novice student and the expert researcher for modeling tools and techniques. It builds upon neatly explained concepts of probability, queuing and stochastic processes to provide a variety of examples of applications. It is definitely a book that one has to keep at hand, as it contains recipes for a huge number of performance and dependability evaluation needs. Besides the rich content, the structure and the presentation are great: a bit of theory and soon one example from practical life, the reader never gets lost but he is rather brought step by step to a comprehensive understanding of the topics.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable and Indispensable Book........2004-02-10

The "Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications - 2nd edition " by Kishor S. Trivedi is a valuable reference for students and professionals. Didactically organized the eleven chapters presents the core concepts of probability theory and stochastic processes in an accessible easy-to-understand approach. The rich set of examples and exercises, based on numerous computer science and engineering real world applications, allow the readers to build their knowledge gradually.
I would like to highlight the system reliability fundamentals covered and articulate with the remains topics.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Statistics Book for CS Students.......2003-09-01

Second edition of "Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications" by Kishor S. Trivedi is a highly recommendable book. The concepts provided for probability theory and stochastic processes are excellent for students of communication, networking and computer science. It provides a good understanding of stochastic processes and Markov chains which are very relevant for students and teachers especially working in the speech processing area. I found the book and its contents very relevant and the examples provided could be very well related to networking and computer science, a unique aspect of this book. The students grasped the concepts well and found the problems very challenging and helpful in building up their concepts and knowledge. I had previously taught a number of other books and introduced this book last year at my University, I feel very satisfied and content with the decision of choosing this book for my students. All eleven chapters are equipped with excellent examples, problems and exercises broadening the reader's mind. The first 5 chapters constitute the probability theory while the rest of the chapters emphasize on stochastic processes very relevant to students of advanced networking and speech processing. Other books on probability and statistics usually lack an important aspect specially when used for computer science and telecommunication students. The examples and exercises not only make students learn and understand and probability and statistics concepts but also create its relevance to their very fields, therefore the book is an extremely precious gift from Prof. Trivedi specially for the students of computer science and telecommunication. An inexpensive Asian edition (paperback), a solution manual and powerpoint slides of each chapter are now available.

Prof. Trivedi has done a tremendous job in introducing topics of advanced research not found before; the students gained knowledge about the modern research environment and felt confident too. This book is not only recommended for beginners but also for professionals and engineers.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely useful book.......2003-08-06

A very useful book. A good choice for somebody who is just starting to get a feel of the subject, or someone who is looking to build a strong foundation in the area. The best feature of this book is its lucid language. There are many books in the market, which cover a lot of material but, for the average reader, are very difficult to understand. The example-based approach coupled with a comprehensive material coverage are additional selling points. I would highly recommend this book

4 out of 5 stars A very good book, but contains some annoying typing errors.......1997-08-11

A book with a very application oriented treatment of reliability, based on electronics industries experience. It uses an advanced style of explanation, i.e. assumes that readers have mastered certain topics/knowledge/techniques in reliability. However, prerequisites for reading this book must be clearly stated; i.e. what basics are required, are the basics given in the books enough, etc. Some typos appear in description of table/figure (i.e. table 6.7 written as table 1.7). Also some computational errors appeared in the answers to selected problems. These are indeed small errors, however they detract from a good book's image. Especially for new students in reliability and would-be practicioners, the answers to the problems in the book are very necessary to provide concept/technique mastery and understanding check. Why do not the authors provide answers to ALL problems? One possible thing to add to the contents is the design of reliability experiments, i.e. the general concepts and some examples drawn from some areas of interest (mechanical, electrical).

5 out of 5 stars Simply superb !.......2001-09-21

As a reliability engineer, I do a lot of probabilistic risk analysis and reliability based design for large systems like gas turbines, etc. From both a theoretical and applied perspective, this is an excellent text for those getting into this subject.

The book is written in a pleasing style, in which complex ideas are introduced in a manner than anyone (with no prior statistical training) can understand. It is a small book that packs a lot of information in it, and the companion volume by the same authors is another excellent text on the same topic. I particularly liked their treatment of LRFD methods and the FORM algorithms.

On the negative side, I found the algorithms described in Madsen's "Methods of structural safety" easier to implement. The authors might want to incorporate some of those methods in their next edition. They could also discuss approaches to model time-dependent reliability, apart from including empirical probability distributions in design.

Overall, I have read most of the texts out there in reliability-based design and this is clearly the best. It's an expensive book, but well worth the money !

5 out of 5 stars This book is One of the Best.......2000-01-25

    Book Description

We all like to know how reliable and how risky certain situations are, and our increasing reliance on technology has led to the need for more precise assessments than ever before. Such precision has resulted in efforts both to sharpen the notions of risk and reliability, and to quantify them. Quantification is required for normative decision-making, especially decisions pertaining to our safety and wellbeing. Increasingly in recent years Bayesian methods have become key to such quantifications.

Reliability and Risk provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematical and statistical aspects of risk and reliability analysis, from a Bayesian perspective. This book sets out to change the way in which we think about reliability and survival analysis by casting them in the broader context of decision-making. This is achieved by:

Reliability and Risk can most profitably be used by practitioners and research workers in reliability and survivability as a source of information, reference, and open problems. It can also form the basis of a graduate level course in reliability and risk analysis for students in statistics, biostatistics, engineering (industrial, nuclear, systems), operations research, and other mathematically oriented scientists, wherein the instructor could supplement the material with examples and problems.

5 out of 5 stars The product of clear thinking and experience.......2007-01-12

You know that this is a book with a difference from the start, when the second and third chapters devote themselves entirely to justifying why probability, utility, exchangeability and indifference are the fundamental ideas behind risk and reliability.

Never heard of utility or exchangeability? If you do any Bayesian statistics at all, then shame on you and read Chapters 2 and 3 immediately! If you do not, then do not let this put you off reading further. This is a book on reliability with impressive intellectual weight. It not only tells you the what and how of reliability and risk analysis using Bayesian methods, but also the why. The why is a philosophical and a mathematical argument. For example, you think you know what the failure rate is? Prof. Singpurwalla begs to differ and spends 10 pages to convince you that there is a lot more to the failure rate once you start to think about it. You think you know why the exponential or the Weibull should be used? Well, the simplest assumption that you can make about any set of objects is that you are indifferent between them and such indifference can lead you to use the exponential or Weibull as models for reliability. This is the idea behind exchangeability and Prof. Singpurwalla argues why it is the simplest way to think about modelling and why it then justifies using Bayesian statistical methods.

The rest of the book is a plethora of probability models and inference methods for different problems in risk and reliability. Those models and problems are a summary of the author's work in reliability over 4 decades. There are chapters on stochastic models of failure (including the discussion on failure rates), on how to do Bayesian statistical inference for the common lifetime models such as exponential and Weibull, as well as common topics like accelerated tests and dose-response experiments and a chapter on signature analysis that describes the analysis of the power spectum for reliability. Then there are chapters look at survival in dynamic environments, point processes for events and non-parametric Bayes methods; technically more advanced topics that require a good knowledge of probability theory but, as always, clearly developed and explained. The last two chapters look at relatively new and 'hot' topics, those of the reliability of co-operative, competing and vague systems, and the use of reliability in econometrics and finance.

If you're looking for a book of reliability analysis recipes that you can follow without thinking, then this is not the book for you. If you want a book that carefully lays out a logical approach to risk and reliability modelling, inference and prediction, at a good yet clearly explained technical level and that illustrates the approach with applications to many different reliability problems, then this is the book that you've been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook from a student's point of view.......2006-10-18

This is the prescribed textbook for my Reliability & Risk Analysis class. I found this book to be very student-friendly and each topic is well motivated.

For beginners (like me), this book is a Gold Mine !!!

5 out of 5 stars A great book by Nozer Singpurwalla.......2006-10-15

The book by Nozer Singpurwalla provides a clear introduction to the definition of "Probability", and the foundations on which the Probabilistic Framework is built. In almost every facet of today's life, Probability is dominant as a used concept. Although seemingly trivial to define in some simple cases such as cards or flipping a coin, much controversy prevailed over centuries on the topic of what is exactly meant by "Probability". The author Singpurwalla provides an extremely clear and abundant discussion of the subject, that is relevant at the introductory level as well as at the top level of the scientific community. This introduction is done in the context of Reliability and Risk Analysis, which makes it even easier to comprehend than in a more abstract setup. The book is worth buying on the basis of the second chapter alone "The Quantification of Uncertainty".

For the reader that is more versed into the subject, the author takes it to the highest level by introducing "Exchangeability and Indifference", a much specialized topic.

The author Nozer D. Singpurwalla being an expert authority in the subject of "Reliability", the crux of the book comes in chapters four (4) to ten (10) that offer a comprehensive review of the material in the field. The value of these chapters is in the author's expert selection of all the areas of value in Reliability and Risk Analysis. While many standard books present a linear listing of most techniques, Singpurwalla presents a collection of approaches that are classified through ther conceptual content and are meant to take a novice student to the expert level. While some of these concepts are explained in details, others are too complex to be detailed and are properly referenced. Of particular interest to an expert would be the part on the use of stochastic processes for modelling reliability. Not that many have attempted such a road.

Finally the last chapter introduces some of the Risk notions to the finance world. Although such a world is terribly complex and not so easily prone to successful modelling, this chapter nevertheless will open the avenue to fresh minds on how the Probabilistic Framework can be applied in diverse areas.

Throughout the whole book, a decision theoretic approach is outlined either explicitly or implicitly, as prescribed by the Bayesian paradigm.

Definitely an excellent contribution by a top expert. I was not surprised at all that three top scientist, Lindley, AFM Smith and Kadane offered their view on the book cover. A top book.
