If you want to go into the HM industry.......2002-09-01

The "BestEver" Intro Book for a Overview of Hospitality!.......2001-12-13
I have been teaching the college lever intro course for well over 20 years. I have used many text and supplemented same. John's book is succinct, well written and dosen't bore you with trivia. Students thinking about a career in hospitality are interested in finding out all they can in a short period of time what the hospitality industry has to offer. Walker's book, I have used as Department Chair at two colleges, is still the best book on the market. John quickly exposes the unsuspecting student
to a array of opportunities that many of them never thought that they could get to via a career in the hospitality industry. The stero typical notion of HRIM Majors being "Burger Flippers" is quickly dispelled when John's book is used along with supplemental material demonstrating further connections to many facets of the service industry.
I thank John Walker many times over for his diligence in keeping consistent the material with regular updates. Other books are good, but John's is the best. Afer more than 44 times of teaching this class, I will stick with John's text. It is an sperb read for those who are either beginning a career or who may be searching for a place to start. It also ties in nicely with other courses that often capture a readers interest to continue on and seek out more information. It is a great recruitment tool if used well.

Customer Reviews:
I learned to be courteous.......2007-01-21
I had a great time taking the time to participate on a Hospitality Management course. Despite the instructor's tedious, homogenised, chameleon-esque scribble which amounts to nothing more than the demented cacophonous racket of a drugged lunatic banging loudly on kitchen pots and pans. The prof spend way too much time in darkened rooms in front of 30 year old PC turning a whiter shade of pale. We never had a single moment in class to discuss the book. But the book reminds me of a time in that classroom that everyone wanted to leave and breathe, before our brains start to rot from all that festering stagnation and cognitive dysfunctional lecture with a uncouth epiphany of the profession.

I payed for the new book; but the product that Amazon sent to me was not good because it looked like the used one without the American Hotel & lodging scantron. Usually, this scantron should come with the new book. I have called to customer service, however, nothing's going on.

Customer Reviews:
I needed this for a class...........2007-05-13
I needed this book for a college class. The college books store was charging a fortune for it. My teacher told us to look on Amazon and it was here and saved me quite a bit of money. Thanks Amazon.
A symplistic presentation of a complex subject........1998-10-25
This book should be considered for a "young readers" level. After completing (1 hour) you will not have any more practical knowledge on this subject than what you could gain by walking through a casino and observing. At $61.00 this book is overpriced by $55.00 when measured against value. If you are serious about this subject try "Casino Operations Management" by Kilby/Fox (best) or "An Introduction To The Casino Entertainment Industry" by Eade.

Customer Reviews:
Too brief, too boring, too expensive.......2001-05-06
I work for a hotel/property management software company now and never worked in the hospitality industry other than being a busboy at a Howard Johnson's when I was 16, so I bought this book to give me a better feel for what goes on in the heads of the people using our software. I was disappointed in my choice as soon I opened the package and saw how briefly each topic is covered.
There are plenty of pictures and short biographies of the great hoteliers, which were about the most interesting parts of the book. Many other pictures showed typical workers smiling as they did their jobs, taken right out of the archives from the major hotels. Each chapter also had a summary and review questions section which takes up a good portion of the book. Other than things I had no interest in, such as pages of checklists on the steps to efficiently cleaning a hotel room and sample franchise agreements that used up more valuable pages, there was very little depth to any of it.
It only glanced at the subject of the night audit and accounting functions, which is what I originally bought the book for, and it's coverage of PMS (Property Management Software) systems was limited to remarking that this is one of the biggest changes to happen in the past ten years. I wondered if the author had ever had any exposure to any of the popular PMS packages in use today, or even knew of any since he didn't list or provide references for further study on this subject. With a copyright date of February 2001 I assumed I would get the most up to date coverage but the few pictures and paragraphs of front desk automation were of ancient terminals circa 1985 or so and virtually nothing was mentioned of recent technology changes such as the Internet and online reservation systems now being integrated and handled in-house.
This book is listed as 400 pages but is actually only a little over 300, which was a blessing in a way, since I couldn't wait to get through it and get started on more substantial book on the subject. I'm used to buying computer books with list prices in the range of this book's price tag, and expect to get a comprehensive guide to the subject when I do. I was disappointed with what I got for my money on this purchase though, and couldn't recommend it for anyone who doesn't have to buy it for a course they are taking in school. As a book to keep around just for knowledge, review and reference it is of little value to me.

Casino management primer written at junior high school level.......1998-12-03
Extremely basic text that relies largely on pictures to convey the content. Either an example of the dumbing down of both a complex industry and a complicated subject or the future of technical and professional education. Purchased it to consider using in a class I teach in Casino management at the junior college level--felt it was aimed at too junior an audience.
