Book Description
With 50 percent of the world's landmass covered by shared river basins, competition over water resources has always had the potential to spark violence. And the burgeoning populations and fast-developing industries of today's Third World are putting ever greater pressures on already scarce water resources.
Elhance explores the hydropolitics of six of the world's largest and most turbulent river basins. In each case, he examines the basin's physical, economic, and political geography; the possibilities for acute conflict; and efforts to develop bilateral and multilateral agreements for sharing water resources.

Poor writing too hard to overcome.......2007-03-21
I was really interested in this subject and thought I chose this book carefully. I liked the table of contents and am sure that the author did a tremendous amount of reseach for this book. The style of writing, however, is so bad that I can't finish it. It is written in a droning, dry, over-generalized undergraduate academic style that puts you right to sleep. The author chose to write a formal report, full of unnecessarily long, awkward sentences and stiff language, and gave away the opportunity to tell the stories of these important river basins. This is not a complaint about wanting to be more entertained. There is a lot of information to convey and few readers will be familar with the details. Still, the pain of reading this book just isn't worth the time and effort it will take to finish.
Looking through a magnifying lens.......2000-07-28
"This is an extraordinary "window" on six, crucial geographical areas of the world which are described as if seen through a magnifying lens. Its most outstanding feature is the presentation of an overwhelming body of data in an extremely meaningful and orderly way through a detailed yet solid historical, economic, political account and reasoning for each area. Written in a quick-paced style, it guides and traps the reader into this fascinating journey piloted by the most basic yet offended need in the world: water."

a good resource.......2007-03-24
I borrowed the second edition from the local library and have decided to buy the third edition. While the reviews of software and how to set up a website can become a little dated, you only need get one or two good ideas out of a book like this to make it more than worth the cost.

Book Description
If information flows well between and within organizations, it empowers people by enabling them to make evidence-based choices; it promotes efficiency; and it enables creativity. Information does not flow well by chance, the process needs to be managed - by everyone concerned. This book introduces tools to analyze how information is used in an organization. It discusses both strategic and practical options for improvements, in the context of the broader information-related changes and debates currently taking place in the world.
This edition covers the major developments in these external debates since the first edition was published in 1998. The aim remains the same: to strengthen the effectiveness of development organizations and their interaction with the communities which they exist to serve. Discussions of knowledge management, capacity building, institutional learning, evaluation and impact assessment, research, information products, and evidence-based work have been added to this edition or considerably extended, together with a number of new case studies.

Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World
ASIN: 1853839477 |
Book Description
This book is a cornerstone resource for a wide range of organizations and individuals concerned with sustainable development at national and local levels, as well as for international organizations concerned with supporting such development. While the focus is on integrated strategies for sustainable development, the approaches and methods covered are equally relevant to poverty reduction, environmental and sectoral strategies, program development and review. Agenda 21 called for all countries to develop sustainable development strategies. For such strategies to be effective there needs to be a real commitment. In every country, government at all levels, the private sector and civil society must work together in a true partnership, in transparent ways which enable genuine stakeholder participation. The necessary mechanisms and processes need to be coordinated to enable continuous learning and improvement. This resource book provides flexible, non-prescriptive guidance on how to develop, assess and implement national sustainable development strategies. It sets out principles and ideas on process and methods, and suggests how these can be used. It is based on an analysis of past and current practice, drawing directly from experience in both developed and developing countries. Following a discussion of the nature and challeges of sustainable development and the need for strategic responses to them, the heart of the book covers the main tasks in strategy processes. Individual chapters offer a rich range of guidance, ideas and case studies on: * The nature of sustainable development strategies and current practice * Key steps in starting, managing and improving sustainable development strategies * Analysis of and for sustainable development * Participation for sustainable development * Information, education and communications * Strategy decision-making frameworks and procedures * The financial basis for strategies * Monitoring and evaluation systems.

Book Description
As we enter the twenty-first century, America's workforce looks markedly different than it ever has before. Compared with even twenty years ago, more white women, people of color, disabled persons, new and recent immigrants, gays and lesbians, and intergenerational mixes now work in America. The way in which government employers embrace this opportunity of diversity will clearly distinguish effective and efficient organizations from those which are unproductive and unable to meet the demands and necessities of the American people in the new century. This book addresses the demographic changes to the labor force and workplace and the ways in which government employers are managing the imminently diverse populations that now fill public sector jobs. It addresses the specific management strategies and initiatives relied upon by public sector employers as well as the implications of effectively managing variegated workforces for the overall governance of American society.

Book Description
The developing world's poorest people live in marginal, often harsh rural environments—environments which tend to be fragile and highly vulnerable to overexploitation. These rural people depend directly on their local ecosystems for access to the food, forage, fuel, fiber, water, medicines and building materials. What types of natural resource management (NRM) can improve the livelihoods of these poor people while protecting or enhancing the natural resource base they depend on? New approaches to NRM are needed: ones that move beyond the earlier narrow focus on productivity (such as crop yields), to include social, institutional and policy considerations.
One such approach--comanagement--is presented in this book. It can be defined as collaborative arrangements in which the community of local resource users, local and senior governments, and other stakeholders share responsibility and authority for managing a specified natural resource or resources. This book draws on more than a decade of research across the developing world and presents case studies from Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Ecuador, Lebanon, and Viet Nam.
A key message to resource managers, policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners is that proposed solutions to NRM problems will be effective and lasting only if driven by the knowledge, action, and learning of local users. This book presents only a small sample of the research on community based NRM supported by IDRC over the years. For more analysis, discussion, and case material visit the companion website, www.idrc.ca/in_focus_comanagement, which is included with this book, on a CD-ROM.

Book Description
Something is wrong with our agricultural and food systems. Despite great progress in increasing productivity in the last century, hundreds of millions of people remain hungry and malnourished. Can nothing be done or is it time for the expansion of another sort of agriculture, founded on more ecological principles, and in harmony with people, their societies and cultures?
This book draws on many stories of successful transformation. A sustainable agriculture making the best of nature and people's knowledge and collective capacities has been showing increasingly good promise. Everyone is in favor of sustainability, yet few go seriously beyond the fine words. This book shows that there is no alternative to radical reform of national agricultural, rural and food policies, and institutions - the time has come for the next agricultural revolution.

A volume in Advances in Cultural Psychology: Constructing Human Development
Series Editor: Jaan Valsiner, Clark University
What do young people do with the novels they read, the films they see, the music they hear and sing? How do these cultural products act as symbolic resources in the process of development? And what can we, as researchers, learn by studying peoples uses of fiction?
This monograph approaches development through the study of transitions and the processes of exploration that follow ruptures in peoples lives. Specifically, it examines young peoples symbolic responsibility as they have to choose among the wide range of cultural products societies exposes them to. The book thus examines the books, films and music that young people mobilize when they need to redefine their identity, learn informal know-how, or have to confer meaning to what happens to them in transitions. The book has a theoretical scope. It draws on cultural psychology and psychoanalysis to formulate the importance of semiotic mediation in thinking, feeling and acting. Its main contribution is to propose a model for analyzing uses of symbolic resources, such as books and films, in everyday life. It thus shows how uses of symbolic resources can enable new forms of experiences and conduct. It finally highlights social and personal conditions that might facilitate or hinder developmental uses of symbolic resources.
The book, based on in-depth case studies, is addressed to scholars, professional and students in the fields of youth, culture and the media, cultural and developmental psychology, and life-long education.

Book Description
* Includes lessons from Africa, Central America, North America and Asia, and detailed coverage of collaborative management in irrigated environments of Australia's Murray Darling Basin
* Essential reading for economists, policy-makers, researchers, leaders,
practitioners and students working in environmental and natural resource management
Mainstream economics has a tight grip on public discourse, yet remains
poorly equipped to comprehend the collaborative vision for managing
environmental and resource commons. This ground-breaking book diagnoses the weaknesses of mainstream economics in analysing collaborative and other decentralized approaches to environmental management, and presents a unique operational approach to how collaborative environmental governance might be brought to fruition in a variety of contexts, whether in industrialized or developing countries. The result is a powerful, useful and badly needed approach to economics for collaborative environmental management of the
commons.
