As an American citizen, I take strong exception to Ms. Geffner's statement which follows and apparently is meant to be interpreted as representative of the opinions of all Americans. Also, what is her authority for making the enclosed statement:

Literacy for the Workplace.......2003-11-17
Great book to use for English language learners that have been in the country for many years but lack the literacy skills needed for a business environment. The letter samples give great ideas for phrases and tone. The section on usage is an excellent overview to clear up any questions on grammar. I have recommended this book for my students at BusinesSpeak to keep on their desks as a reference guide.
An Excellent ESL Source But..........2000-05-06
As a teacher of ESL at the private college, I found Barron's ESL Guide to American Business English an excellent source for newcomers to American business practices. Unfortunately while the book targets the ESL population, it still requires significant English literacy skills to read and understand. Given the complexity of the subject matter, it's probably as simplified as possible. Includes eighty different documents covering a wide range of correspondence with concise instructions; "Words to Watch For", a vocabulary word listing provides definitions for key words at the beginning of many chapters; extensive table of contents and index, makes it relatively easy to locate particular areas of interest.

I find this new dictionary to be of great help in dealing with American Business texts. A great tool for business communication between the English-speaking world and China.

First of all, this book isn't 344 pages as listed. It is only 156. Secondly, this book only consists of english words and their chinese equivalents in simplified character form. NO pinyin and NO example sentences. This book would only be useful to Chinese people who want to translate english words directly into Chinese. This book is advertised as both english-chinese and chinese-english, however there is no chinese-english. I ordered this book before it was released and just received it. I am extremely disappointed. I repeat: NO Pinyin and NO example sentences.

Shapiro's "American Legal Quotations" is notable for its ease of use. It is more than simply a listing of pithy quotations. The sections of the book are arranged alphabetically by 208 topic headings and it has a rich index of authors and key words. Moreover, the quotations are keyed to precise legal citations so that legal writers can use the quotations with confidence. As a bonus, the book is fun to browse and read at leisure. It would be a welcome addition to any lawyer's or judge's library.

I admit it. I'm not a big fan of Elaine Costello. It seems to be that a lot of the signs in this book are English...not ASL. Of course, there aren't that many books out there about legal sign language, so it is helpful to a point. Just make sure before you start using the signs that they are true ASL signs and not Signed English.
