Customer Reviews:
Worth the buy!.......2004-04-02
I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.
A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02
This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.
Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30
This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.
A matchless guide.......2003-08-03
While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.
Application Oriented.......2003-07-01
In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!
Book Description
Cooper and Schindler’s Business Research Methods offers students and instructors thorough coverage of business research topics backed by solid theory. Using science to make decisions for business.......2007-02-19
Nothing is done in business these days without using research to make decisions. The days of simply using hunches and intuition are just about about gone. It really is a jungle out there, and research is one of your rifles. This book shows you why research is important, how to do it, and how to apply what you've found. Research, if done correctly, can help you minimize the variables which can destroy you, or accentuate the factors which can help you meet your mission objectives. No matter what size your business is, you can apply these principles to increase your chances of success. The book is very expensive, but so is failure. Pardon the cliche', but an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.
Research Resource Feedback.......2007-01-04
Cooper's Business Research Methods was easy to read, yet provided a high level of research processes and methodology for use in a PhD program.
Book Description
Lind/Marchal/Wathen: Basic Statistics for Business and Economics 5e is a derivative of the best-selling STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES IN BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, 12/e offering the essential topics of statistical tools and methods delivered in a student friendly, step-by-step format. The text presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, though the text maintains a focus on presenting statistics content as opposed to technology or programming methods, and the fifth edition continues as a ‘students’ text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.
Customer Reviews:
there are excellent, cheaper alternatives.......2007-10-20
Take a look at www.coventry-collegiate.com. Understanding Business Statistics, the book featured there, is independently published and sells for only $39.95 (new). It is clear, extremely readable and very student-friendly.
Review of Basic Statistics.......2007-02-20
This is a well written and illustrated text book that describes the working of statistics. Definitions are placed in boxs within the text so the defination of a term is where you read the uses of the term. Review questions are also place within the text so the question follows the definition and explation of the statitistical information being taught. The book also uses web sites for information and examples, software programs such as Excel, to add to the learning experience. Included is a CD with power point lessons, and sample quizes.
Good Book but..........2006-10-19
Yes, put all the extra features together, namely the student CD and the Visual Statistics together, this seems like a well-put-together solution for a beginner statistics course. However, it needs some help. The book could be more thoroughly indexed. Visual Statistics software does not work properly even with updates. Sentence such as "The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is obtained by summing the various sample means and dividing the sum by the number of samples" is not intuitive. This book has potential to be great, but it will take better teaching techniques than complex statistics talk.
introductory stats.......2006-07-05
The book is essentially a standard introductory probability and statistics course, with an emphasis on the statistics. The business and economics in the title is mostly reflected in the examples given in the text, which have that orientation.
There is also no emphasis on formal proving of various maths results. The typical reader is not expected to be a maths major, and probably does not need it.
A useful feature is the CD that accompanies the book. It lets the reader easily use a computer to handle the tedious data inputting and number crunching.
Book Description

* An emphasis placed on the practical uses of forecasting.
* All data sets used in this book are available on the Internet.
* Comprehensive coverage provided on both quantitative and qualitative forecasting techniques.
* Includes many new developments in forecasting methodology and practice.
Customer Reviews:
Mildly helpful.......2007-02-14
If you need advanced Forecasting Methods and like the thick mathematical language of typical textbooks, this is for you.
Great reference book!.......2006-07-06
I've been in the field for a few years now and I finally found a book that explains and summarizes the forecasting theory so good. This is my reference book now. I use it to teach my engineers in the subject and for personal reference as well. It provides new information that wasn't available 10 years ago. The explanaitions are good and the examples clear.
DecisionPro Users must have!.......2005-03-02
Was referred to this book while evaluating several software packages for forecasting and this really helped us make the right decision. We decided on Vanguard Software DecisionPro as it supports all the methods (many of which I had no idea existed) that are outlines in this book. This book (and the software) are great. This is a great add-on for anyone doing forecasting!
This book has the formulas........2004-03-12
Chapters 3 and 4, and on covered the vital information that is useful for inventory system forecasting at the SKU level, and for measuring the accuracy of the forecasts. This book was extremely helpful in that regard. Highly recommended.
Down to earth, practical guide on forecasting........2003-12-14
The book provides coverage of three important areas:
- Basic forecasting tools and methods - summarizing data, statistical tools, regression, as well as some material on more advanced forecasting methods
- Data preparation - time series decomposition, smoothing methods
- A discussion of the issues involved in forecasting - long term versus short term forecasting, accuracy of forecasts, the importance and limitations of judgmental forecasts and combining these with statistical forecasts
I was fortunate enough to stumble across this book in a colleagues office and believe this book should belong in every market research professional's shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Overall Best Work for Study of Educational Research Methods.......2006-07-07
As a university instructor who has used this text, I would recommend it for its thoroughness and attention to detail in the teaching of educational research methods. Most students are intimidated by research courses. However, this book lays out the reasons for research and the ways of approaching research problems in a step-by-step fashion that is both scholarly and common sense. It is also a great resource to have on one's library shelf. I highly recommend it it for graduate research courses.
Useful.......2005-04-03
If a person is doing a thesis, or disertation, then this book will answer questions about each of the 5 chapters and all those little details that a not taught but are required by your committee.

Book Description
Mastering the art of problem solving takes more than proficiency with basic calculations; it requires understanding how people use information, recognizing the importance of ideology, learning the art of storytelling, and acknowledging the important distinction between facts and values. Intended for professors, managers, entrepreneurs, and students, this guide addresses these and other essential skills. With clear prose, quotations, and exercises for solving problems in the real world, this book serves as an ideal training manual for those who are new to or intimidated by quantitative analysis and an excellent refresher for those who have more experience but want to improve the quality of their data, the clarity of their graphics, and the cogency of their arguments.

Delightful excursion in thinking about how to think.......2007-04-20
It is different from, and for many purposes, better than a science textbook. More than enough science books have been written, but TNIK is better because it teaches readers how to think about the data on which science is built. Its fresh approach to understanding the natural world as well as human-made systems is a noteworthy improvement over the plug-in, grind-out perspective that academic classes typically offer and that turns off students.
A great primer and reference to fall back on.......2005-11-04
While no doubt I've heard many of nuggets contained in the book over the course of my high school and college days, I found Koomey's book a pleasurable read and useful synthesis of approaches and tips for completing quality research and analyses. Internalizing Koomey's advice is going to help most readers be more discriminating consumers of published research and better authors of their own research. It's a reference source I've already gone back to myself in just a few weeks and a great training resource for new consultants my company hires.
Interesting & valuable, though philosophical > statistical .......2005-02-01
I expected the author to talk much about statistical analysis and related "technical stuff". I had been very wrong. In fact, the book can be regarded as a warning to common people about the "irrelevancy" and "inaccuracy" of data or information we encounter or process so that we can perform better analysis of on our own. As from pg 197, "of primary importance from this book are the following lessons:-"
- Don't be intimidated by anyone (esp those know-it-alls)
- Be a critical thinker
- Don't confuse what's countable with what really counts
- Get organized
- Question authority
- Dig into the numbers
- Focus on the essential
- Document, document, document
- Use the internet
- Remember that others don't care as much about your work as you do
- Synthesis follows analysis
In short, a good read. Dont miss it.
p.s. I like the following quotes from the book very much. (The author did use over 31 quotes with at least one for each chapter)
Just because I use a study to refute another study does not mean my study is right. It just means I believe it. Caveat Emptor. - Cynthia Crossen
Whether or not someone else knows it all isn't really relevant; the only thing that's relevant is what you know and what you do. - Robert Ringer
not for the technically minded.......2003-01-18
This is an entertaining and well written book on some of the do's and don'ts of data analysis. To quote from Dr. Beers review below, "The main emphasis is on the art of data interpretation." Indeed there are useful tools here for performing sanity checks and for asking critical questions about all sorts of data collections. ... The examples are, at best, sketchy and few in number. The anectodes are amusing but not terribly informative. I would have much preferred more concrete examples and further discussion on some technical matters. ....
Great treatise on critical thinking and organization.......2002-12-18
"Turning Numbers Into Knowledge: Mastering the Art of Problem Solving" should be required reading for anyone engaged in producing, reading, or analysing information. Based on the title one might assume that I mean numerical information, but that is not the case at all. The basic principles, such as how to sift through information and the importance of documentation of sources, are important parts of any information product. In fact, except for the sections on graphs, tables, normalizing data and a few others, the rest of the book (fully at least three quarters of it) is dedicated to determining what constitutes good information, good techniques, good analysis, good documentation, etc. This is a book on problem solving techniques and analysis of the information products of others.
Filled with useful tools and tips for problem solving under real-life situations it is one of the most useful books available. "Turning Numbers Into Knowledge: Mastering the Art of Problem Solving" is a masterful work in the area of critical analysis and a highly recommended read for anyone involved in creating or using information of any kind.

Competitors...Beware!.......2007-08-16
Whether a branding consultant, senior line manager or strategic planner, (the Bensoussan/Fleisher book) "Business and Competitive Analysis" provides a multitude of analytical techniques that can help one think about, build and successfully drive implementation of a winning operating roadmap. For example, with `hard' assets...e.g. buildings, plant and equipment...almost `nil' vs. that of their manufacturing counterparts, predominantly service-providing firms such as banks, insurers and investment firms might find Chapter 17 - Corporate Reputation Analysis - to be of particular value for managing "this", arguably their MOST important asset [as "reputation", NOT customers, is what usually "belongs" to a firm]. Babette and Craig...Thank you for sharing this important toolkit with us. With it, we certainly cannot say "but I did not know".
- Kevin McClair, Financial Services Industry Veteran and Wharton MBA
Book Description
". . . the writing makes this book interesting to all levels of students. Bobko tackles tough issues in an easy way but provides references for more complex and complete treatment of the subject. . . . there is a familiarity and love of the material that radiates through the words."
--Malcolm James Ree, ORGANIZATIONAL RESEARCH METHODS, April 2002
"This book provides one of the clearest treatments of correlations and regression of any statistics book I have seen. . . . Bobko has achieved his objective of making the topics of correlation and regression accessible to students. . . . For someone looking for a very clearly written treatment of applied correlation and regression, this book would be an excellent choice."
--Paul E. Spector, University of South Florida
"As a quantitative methods instructor, I have reviewed and used many statistical textbooks. This textbook and approach is one of the very best when it comes to user-friendliness, approachability, clarity, and practical utility."
--Steven G. Rogelberg, Bowling Green State University
Building on the classical examples in the first edition, this updated edition provides students with an accessible textbook on statistical theories in correlation and regression. Taking an applied approach, the author uses concrete examples to help the student thoroughly understand how statistical techniques work and how to creatively apply them based on specific circumstances they face in the "real world."
The author uses a layered approach in each chapter, first offering the student an intuitive understanding of the problems or examples and progressing through to the underlying statistics. This layered approach and the applied examples provide students with the foundation and reasoning behind each technique, so they will be able to use their own judgement to effectively choose from the alternative data analytic options.

Challenging but worthwhile.......2007-08-13
I don't disagree that Creveling's book is a challenging read, but I do think it's a worthwhile and reasonably comprehensive text on the topics. Many of the methods presented require a certain level of sophistication to execute correctly. If you don't understand the material, maybe you shouldn't be trying to use some of the tools.
Designing for Six Sigma.......2005-02-03
Disclosure: I'm a competitor of Skip's in the Design for Six Sigma field.
Skip obviously knows his stuff - he's written one of the most detailed descriptions of DFSS around. His differentiation of a methodology for technology development and product development is an important concept. The book provides a detailed step-by-step description of how to design a product for Six Sigma performance.
However, the book is really a tough read. I've been working in the DFSS field for the last 7 years and I found it a tough go. The methodology descriptions, while detailed, suffer from a lack of examples or a case study.
My other critique is that Skip describes the DFSS "nirvana" - if your development process is a bit informal, you'll start asking yourself "How in the world will I ever get to DFSS?" Some thoughts around how to transition from a typical development process to a DFSS-based approach would have been helpful.
Finally, one of my clients handed this book out to virtually all their engineers at the beginning of their DFSS iniative. When, a year or two later, I'd ask the engineers if they had the book, the answer was invariably "Yes." When I'd asked if they'd read the book, however, the answer was just as invariably "No."
If you already know about DFSS, its a great reference. If not, go buy one of the introductory books first.
