Customer Reviews:
Review from experienced business owner.......2007-10-05
I am surprised at some of the negative reviews.
I have started over a dozen businesses over the past 26 years. This book is an excellent overview and help to business owners. If you're expecting one book to give you all the answers and then trash the book because it didn't, you're not dealing with reality.
If you're experienced in business this book will give you many helpful reminders to keep you on track.
If you're inexperienced in business this book is one of the best to give you an overview and starting point.
I haven't yet bought any of Brad's other books but I will be giving some of them a try soon.
The Biggest Scam Ever!!.......2007-08-28
I purchased two of the series because its high ratings. Then when I went back and read the review again, I found an very interesting pattern. That is, all the reviewers who give 4's or 5's to the series are the same people. What is more, when you see their review history, you will find that they only have reviews for the series only. What a coincidence!
I am not implying the author or his company fake the rating. I am just pointing out the fact for yourself to decide. And I think amazon should definitively take action to investigate this kind of activities. I lose faith in amazon's rating system because of this incident.
A disappointed book lover
Business coaching - good advice with a sales pitch attached.......2007-07-03
The book was a very good read, and contained a great amount of helpful ideas and concepts to help small businesses grow. It is also very informative, in a generalized way, to someone looking to start a coaching business. The details are saved for the franchise pitch that is strongly hinted at throughout the book. I enjoy Mr. Sugars style of writing and ability to get across his point quickly, without a lot of extra fluff. The story format made the reading enjoyable.
Business Success from Start to Finish.......2007-06-07
I really liked this book because the format used a case study of Joe and Nellie's business to walk through the process of transforming their business into a commercial, profitable enterprise that works without them.
I liked the way the process unfolded, using examples and teaching to help Joe and Nellie implement changes in their business. The important areas covered included the 6 Steps to Business Success, 5 Ways to Improve Profit, and the 6 Keys to a Winning Team. This enabled me to put theory into practice and see the results clearly illustrated at each step along the way.
The other benefit I got was seeing how a business coach works to educate, motivate, and inspire entrepreneurs to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and make the changes they know they need to make to improve their business and lives.
The Business Coach (Instant Success) (Instant Success).......2007-05-16
I haven't finished reading total book, but so far it is a very good book.

Excellent guide!.......2003-01-09
Probably the best, easy-to-read book regarding coaching and mentoring for self-taught, busy managers.
What They Forgot To Tell You When They Made You A Manager.......2001-05-24
First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.
Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.
Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.
Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.
About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.
Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.
Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies.......2000-07-08
This would be an informational book for people who are coaching or mentoring others. There are lots of helpful tips on how to get others to work for you, not against you. These tips can be helpful when you want people to try their best.
Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies.......2000-07-07
This is a great "how to" book. It has plenty of "laundry lists" that all coaches must keep in mind at all times. It is one of the most comprehensive coaching books that I've seen for a long time. This "on my desk" book is guarranted to have plenty of high-liteing and dog-ears within a short period of time. This is a must for new or seasoned coaches and coaches-of-coaches.

All of us, from birth onward, learn by emulating others. Yet when it comes to our professional lives, we often forget that what we see, we imitate, and what we imitate, we become. This is obviously a positive thing for those who have found successful, encouraging mentors in their fields, but finding those mentors is still much easier for men than for women. In Be Your Own Mentor, Sheila Wellington seeks to provide women not only with advice on locating appropriate mentors, but with the tools to mentor themselves and the opinions, advice, and encouragement of women leaders worth emulating.
Wellington speaks from a broad range of experience. Having spent 20 years working in public health and one term as the first female Secretary of Yale University, she now serves as the president of Catalyst, a nonprofit research organization that works to advance women in business. Catalyst has conducted numerous interviews, surveys, and focus groups on the subject of women succeeding and excelling in their professional lives, and the results of much of that research is included here. CEOs from industry and the nonprofit world, law-firm partners, university presidents, and senior consultants all add their two cents' worth (or more like six figures' worth) to Wellington's observations on everything from planning your career and avoiding being boxed in to learning how to network efficiently and successfully integrate your work life with your home life.
Be Your Own Mentor is jam-packed with informative statistics, useful suggestions, and encouraging reminders--almost to the point of overload. With so many "voices" and so many topics covered, it's easy to feel a little overwhelmed. Despite this organizational drawback, however, this book is a useful tool for women, especially those just starting out. And for the avid emulator, who better to learn from than the likes of Zoe Baird, respected lawyer and president of the Markle Foundation; Betty Beene, president and CEO of United Way of America; Ellen Hancock, chairman and CEO of Exodus Communications; and Anne Mulcahy, president and COO of Xerox Corporation? On that note, the appendix, which provides career-path profiles of each of the pioneers quoted, is one of the most interesting sections of the book. --S. Ketchum

Advice Helpful to Women at All Stages of Career.......2001-09-24
I bought the book "Be Your Own Mentor" during a transitional time in my career. The advice offered has provided me with many great ideas on advancing my career. I thought the get ahead basics were especially helpful. As I was looking for a new position, the job search advice helped me to form opinions on how this new position could be a stepping stone to my future. It urged me to take a look at my career as a progression of jobs on my resume. Additionally, Sheila Wllington offered advice that I had not read in traditional job search books. I think this book is helpful to women at all stages of their career whether just starting out or ready for a mid-career change. If you think you need some advice from successful women and need some ideas on how to further your career I highly recommend this book.
A must read for women in business.......2001-07-31
I wish this book had been around when I was just starting out in business. I would be a lot better off today if I had gotten the great advice it gives out. Much of the writing is based on research done at Catalyst, so is fact-based. Shelia Wellington uses her vast experience and connections to give a road map for success for women in the business world. Many nuggets of advice from women who have reached the highest levels in their careers. A must read.
Put "personal publicity" on your mentoring agenda!.......2001-05-18
Being your own mentor is a critical concept and certainly includes mastering the art of networking. But a good self-mentoring plan must also include achieving corporate and community visibility. To really take charge of your career there is no substitute for creating a strategic 'personal' publicity plan. Your boss won't do it, and neither will your mentor. It is up to YOU. People have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should hire you, promote you, or do business with you. That's really taking charge of your career.
How To Get To The Top!.......2001-03-10
I wish I'd had Be Your Own Mentor years ago. It's chock-full of what to do when you're trying to get ahead at work, with do's and don'ts I've not heard anywhere else. It explains the kinds of jobs that will take you to the top and tells you which won't. And something else it does that you can't get elsewhere: women at the top (like Carly Fiorina of Hewlett Packard) tell you what to do when specific problems arise at work -- like how to land an assignment you want, or what to do when you meet bias, or how to get people who can help you on your side. Includes useful tips on building credibility and taking charge of how you're perceived, or for getting out of a dead end situation with a difficult boss, plus sensible advice about dealing with guilt as you're balancing personal life and work. You gain access to many wise women -- the older sisters everyone needs, who genuinely want to help you reach your goals. My son says most of the career tips will work for him, too, but women especially can use this practical, smart advice book by Spence and Wellington all through their careers.
Wonderful quotes.......2001-03-05
This is an interesting book, perfect for people just out of school or in the first 2-3 years of a career. The advice in the book is solid, and the quotes from the pioneer women are especially interesting and informative. It is refreshing to hear their perspectives, and they provide wonderful information, ideas, and a sense of sisterhood.
My main complaint about the book is there is no new information or anything groundbreaking. Most of the author's ideas are obvious, and she should let the pioneer women speak some more.
Overall, I would recommend this book to young women just starting out who are not quite sure what to expect or if they are on the right track. The pioneer quotes are worth the price of the book.

Book Description
Chances are, if you're a manager in most any organization today, coaching has become an integral part of your responsibilities. And there's no more effective approach to coaching than Action Coaching. Developed by the authors through their work with Levi Strauss, Colgate, Bank of America, Arthur Andersen and other leading companies, Action Coaching is the only coaching process that dramatically increases an individual's personal performance in direct correlation with established organizational goals. Here, Dotlich and Cairo share the same advice, techniques, and tools they've used to transform hundreds of managers and executives into first-rate coaches. Moreover, they clearly demonstrate how Action Coaching can be used as a strategy for achieving organizational goals by aligning personal improvement with a company's vision for the future.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent overview.......2006-01-27
The need to cope with change, inside and outside of the organization, and the employee's need for personal development should be brought into alignment, say these founding partners of CDR International, a consulting firm that specializes in executive coaching. Action coaching is a process that fosters self-awareness, and guides personal development so that an employee's personal development goals are congruent with the goals of the organization.
Action coaching differs from traditional coaching in three ways:
1. The employee's relationship to the coach is a business relationship rather than a therapist-patient relationship.
2. Action coaches tailor their strategies to the individual and the strategies are geared towards performance breakthroughs, where traditional coaching tends to be unfocused and generalized.
3. Where traditional coaching focuses on personal insights, Action coaching translates insights into actions with organizational results.
There are eight steps to implementing Action coaching in your organization:
1. Determine what needs to happen and in what context.
2. Establish trust and mutual expectations. Make sure the employee understands the purpose of the coaching as well as the steps in the process.
3. Contract with the employee for results. There should be a formal written and oral agreement with the employee about the purpose of the coaching and specific goals to achieve.
4. Collect and communicate feedback.
5. Translate talk into action. Use your feedback to enact change. Review and revise goals when needed. Make sure the goals are still in alignment with the business needs of the organization. Set deadlines.
6. Support the employee in taking big steps.
7. Foster reflection about actions.
8. Evaluate both individual and organizational progress.
Action Coaching.......2005-10-12
I have more than thirty years of successful experience using models of leadership, management, and supervision in training classrooms, and I have passionately absorbed the ideas and content in approximately 400 leadership-related texts during the last 20 years.
Action Coaching is to coaching effectiveness what The Supervisor's Survival Kit by Elwood Chapman is to first-line/project lead effectiveness. I've used and advocated the latter book for thirty five years.
Action Coaching, and I haven't finished it yet, "begins with the end in mind". The authors define Action Coaching as "a process that fosters self-awareness, resulting in the motivation and the guidance to change in ways that meet organizational needs." The approach is directly linked to organizational goals and an action plan (both of which are dynamic). There are processes to involve the executive's boss in the process. (Good luck, you say, with getting executives to devote time to such a process!?) Feedback on progress toward important goals and leadership development is valued and seen by the CEO.
The book is loaded with tips, tools, exhibits, questions, processes, and ideas for helping a manager become a more effective coach, even without the support of the organization. The authors of Action Coaching offer forty helpful, easy- to- understand exhibits that: serve as diagnostic tools, offer suggestions on handling difficult situations, provide checklists of to-do's, feature evaluation and role-playing tools, etc.
Wouldn't it be helpful to have a resource where the processes and approach had been successfully field tested in corporations with real executives, with real CEO's who had extremely important strategic challenges ahead of them, and where traditionalist leadership paradigms and behaviors made it impossible to accomplish the articulated goals? That is precisely what these authors did in developing and refining their processes and approaches?
What the Action Coaching is not is a lock-step guide, prescribing every important step and nuance along the way toward helping executive leaders grow. It is a particularly interesting, believable, and seemingly sound approach based on the experiences that they have had with major organizations. The process with individuals and with organizations is one that enables both to help themselves, becoming less dependent upon the external coaches, while building coaching expertise internally.
This is the best book of coaching I have ever read, and I've read quite a few.
Bill Parker
Bill Parker Associates
A Leadership Development Resource
Richmond, VA
PS This is the fourth book I have read by David Dotlich and his colleagues within the past six months. I'd recommend every one of them: Action Learning (1998), Unnatural Leadership (2004), and Leadership Passages (2004). Put together, the series represents a longitudinal action-research case study. Readers of Unnatural Leadership can appreciate the need for the ten new leadership instincts when they remember that they grew from strategic goals and leadership development experiences with corporate clients/partners.
A Solid Effort!.......2001-02-17
David L. Dotlich and Peter C. Cairo discuss how to use action coaching to improve individual effectiveness and boost your overall organization. Their approach begins with fostering self-awareness and then uses this awareness to motivate change that the organization needs. Action coaching involves a series of steps and some specific coaching tools. While this book provides a fairly well-organized and well-written introduction to the concept, it covers familiar training and development ground. If you are a beginner in this area, the repetition of steps and processes will come in handy. Experienced trainers will find the coaching tools quite familiar and the assessment questions fairly obvious. Thus, we at getAbstract.com recommend this book for those who are new to training and development, or for employees who are considering getting coached.
Coaching in Context.......2000-09-07
Dotlich and Cairo have put together a fine and practical book that really helps focus coaching skills towards results. They give a very specific approach to developing an action plan to produce results from coaching. In fact they address four kinds of results - self-awareness results, performance improvement results, performance breakthroughs and finally full-blown transformations. Maybe most important for modern organizations is the anal;ysis of coaching skills in the context of the organizational needs, not just individual developmental needs. We develop and support people because our organization needs their current compliment of skills enhanced with other skills or it needs to rehabilitate a counterproductive approach. Although much of their work is not necesarily new, I believe they have packaged it to be more usable and accesible. I would highly recommend this book for someone looking for a chance to evaluate their own coaching skills, develop an improvement action plan and maintain high levels of motivation to improve their performance. Who know, maybe even transform their performance!

A MUST-READ for All Who Desire Successful Results.......2007-05-11
Coaches, Leaders, Parents, Teens, Educators, Employers, Employees, Anyone with a Pulse:
If you genuinely care about your success or the success of another...If you or someone you love desires better...You can save yourself the frustration of trying to figure out which book will deliver results.
Chapter Six is my favorite. By itself, it stands above the crowd and shows the way to achievement by teaching how-to:
+ Improve Knowledge
+ Sharpen Skills
+ Build Confidence
+ Motivate - Others & Yourself
+ Discover why most people don't take the action they need to succeed.
+ Who wouldn't want to know this?
Though the utility of some of the charts are not immediately obvious, they quickly become useful tools because the authors present solid substance and real-world examples over fluff and fiction.
This book is easy to read and the proven methods are easy to implement.
For yourself or someone you love, I highly recommend is as an opportunity to grow into the life you desire. You can make a difference. Will you?
There are better books around on coaching.......2007-04-06
If you think on starting to coach co-workers, family, friends, team, thumb around and look for another book. The authors start mentioning you can read the book from cover to cover (what I did). I would recommend reading it upside down.
Writing is not clear enough, and, unless you are an experienced and enthusiastic coach, nothing will make sense for you.
On their defense I have to say the version I read was translated into Portuguese and some of the essence may have been lost in the process.
Solid guide for coaching.......2007-01-16
If you want to know what coaching is all about, this is a great place to start. I've read other coaching books which were long on theory and short on practicality. This book stays useful and reasonably easy to read throughout. There were legitimate takeaways and I have a couple of the exercises book marked. The end gets a little off subject, but anytime a book provides legitimate takeaway value, it's worth a shot.
The Definitive book on Coaching.......2005-11-08
There are a lot of good books about coaching but this is the only MUST READ.
Germaine and Jed use their extensive experience to teach the reader how to be an effective coach. Their examples are relative and real and will get you the information you need with the least amount of reading.
This book is elegant in its efficiency and brevity.
You can read other books on coaching but in my experience you can not learn more.
Germaine and Jed, my sincere thanks for a great book.
Excellent Book Re: Coaching.......2005-09-08
I have been cosidering pursuing a career as a "life coach" for some time now. In an effort to ensure that this is the correct path for me, I decided to purchase this book to enhance my knowledge of what coaching is all about - hoping that it would give me an "eagles-eye" view of what to expect, and the tools I may be using.
After reading "Coach Anyone...", I can honestly say that I have obtained a much better idea of the role of the life coach. On top of this, it provided me with many different ideas, models & methods to consider using in my own practice, as well as ways to counter the pitfalls that may occur. Ideas on how to build a coaching business is also included.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to both the novice and professional alike. Whether you've already started your coaching career, or are just wondering what coaching is all about, this book will provide invaluable insights to help you along the way.

Book Description
Everyone who wants a fulfilling career needs a mentor -- someone who has seen it all before, someone who can share hard-won experiences and teach valuable lessons.
In this expanded and enhanced version of his best-selling book, Monday Morning Leadership, David Cottrell packs all of the wisdom of his wide-ranging business experience into this inspirational story. Cottrell introduces us to Jeff, a successful corporate manager who has hit a major wall. Jeff has been leading his team, quarter after quarter, to great sales and better profits for several years -- until now. The tricks that used to work wonders have lost their magic; Jeff is in a slump and is at a loss to find his way out of it.
Overworked, stressed, and feeling that his personal and professional lives are at risk, Jeff reaches out to the father of a college buddy, a retired and tremendously accomplished former executive named Tony. Tony and Jeff agree to meet every Monday for ten weeks to work through Jeff's problems and get his career back on track.
In the course of these intimate sessions, Jeff discovers the secrets of real leadership: "Until I accept total responsibility -- no matter what -- I will not be able to put plans in place to accomplish my goals." And, "My success is the result of making better choices and recovering quickly from poor choices."
Tony leads Jeff through tough lessons in how to manage his people, how to manage his own time, how to manage his superiors, and how to escape from "management land." Most of all, Jeff learns that his success is intimately bound with the success of his people and that tolerating lackluster performance in himself and others on the team only leads to discontent from his most prized and productive employees.
Through Jeff's mentoring sessions, the reader meets a character of integrity who dispenses homespun but effective wisdom. Spend time with Tony and Jeff at their Monday morning meetings, and you will find yourself on the road to becoming a better leader and being more successful at work.

Real Life Relationships.......2007-03-29
I purchased Monday Morning Mentoring at the recommendation of a colleague. After reading it, I went back and ordered copies for my administrative staff. The content is very applicable to real life and gives one suggestions on how to best prevent or at least handle situations that arise in the workplace. Great motivational book and easy read.
Plenty of insights based on real-world events........2006-10-16

A great starter business book that is also applicable to everyday life.......2006-08-05
I really enjoyed this book a lot - it condenses a lot of practical and thought-provoking business advice into an easily-read and entertaining package. Some of the advice is stuff that we all know already, but it is delivered in such a pleasant way that it served as a good reminder. Then there was some advice that I had never heard before, despite having read about twenty business books in the last five years.
Much of the philosophizing is directed towards leading and managing other people, and for a small business owner with no employees such as myself, I found some of the advice wasn't directly useful to my kind of work, but was, surprisingly, very transferable to regular life.
I especially loved the chapter on handling all the small things in life and work that take up small chunks of time but eat away at productivity. He has some very solid and practical tips for becoming more productive at anything you do.
I really enjoyed the tone of this book and would recommend it to people wanting a "starter" business book. It is interesting and the writing flows in a conversational and fluid way, and the advice is solid and broadly useful.

Great thoughts!.......2007-10-10
This is a great little book for those who have recently gotten their Ph.D.'s or postdocs, and are wondering: "what next?". The book touches on everything from giving good talks, writing good papers, and even comparing the pros and cons of various career tracks. This should be essential reading for young scientists.
Mostly obvious advice, but helpful if you read between the lines.......2007-10-05
Overall, I did not find this book to be helpful upon reading it. The vast majority of the advice is either obvious or something you already know by the time you become aware of and purchase this book. Who doesn't know that working long hours and refraining from having children is one of the best ways to succeed in science? Who doesn't know that having a good mentor is an invaluable asset, but not guaranteed to happen because we as scientists receive no training in how to be good mentors?
On the positive side, if you read the anecdotes and success/failure stories that constitute a significant fraction of the book, there is a lot to be learned. Some provide hope because they remind you that others have successfully overcome the same challenges you have faced. Others reinforce the often overlooked point that, while having a supportive mentor is beneficial, we are in a career where being your own best advocate is a must. Taking the anecdotal stories as advice on how to best represent yourself and prepare for your career can make this a useful read. That having been said, the value of the advice tapers off the later in your career you read it.
A must-read book .......2007-04-03
I am currently finishing my Ph.D. study. I thought that it is too late to read this book. However, it is NOT! Based my own experience, the descriptions of Ph.D. study in the book are really accurate and the suggestions given by the author are really helpful.
It is never too late to read this book, strong buy!
Accurate and funny.......2007-03-22
According to my own experience, this book provides a casual and down-to-earth (but also extremely accurate!) description of scientific life and the different stages of a scientific career. Maybe it is too physicist-oriented (indeed, solid-state-physicist-oriented), but readers with a different background should also enjoy. (Hope so, I'm also a solid-state scientist!)
Worth reading, especially for new PhD student!.......2006-11-04
Although you may have heard some similar suggestions from your senior friends in science field, the author gives more background and clear rationale for such choices, from the pointview of an established scientist and manager.
