A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide
Customer Reviews:
Very detailed material but also very CLEAR !.......2007-10-16
I took the exam on Sep 17, 2007 and I passed both of them.
730 on Essential
840 on IT Technician.
I would say that almost every answer on the tests can be found in the book. If you remember and understand every single word in the book, you will not need to do the practice exam, you will pass guarantee it.
I would say the practice exam is easier than on the real exam. You MIGHT want to buy additional study guide, like Exam Cram, so that you can work on hard, even harder questions in relate to the A+ exam. Of course if you memorize every single word in the book, about 1150 pages, you won't need no practice exam, lol.
After all, this book worths the money. The author writes the book in simple language but still pertain to his technical knowledge, which makes it easier to understand and absorb. I strongly recommend anyone who is going to take the A+ exam to read this book first.
GOOD BOOK - PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GET CERTIFIED.......2007-10-15
Hi guys: Please read carefully, I really want to help those wanting to get A+ Certified to do it right. This is a good book the reason i gave it 3 stars are:
1st the book has some errors and i can tell you that it doesn't cover a 100% what's coming in the exam. (trust me i just passed essentials this morning)
2nd the Historical/Essentials/IT Technician divisions are worthless. DO NOT TRUST THEM AND STUDY ONLY ESSENTIALS PARTS FOR THE ESSENTIAL EXAM FOR EXAMPLE!! study all the chapter thoroughly
The book helped me a lot but Im also an experience technician (5+yrs) who just decided to take the test. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING TO TAKE THE TEST USING THIS BOOK OR ANY BOOK IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY RELEVANT PREVIOUS COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE OR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN TECHNICAL SUPPORT ROLES!!(GET YOURSELF INTO TRAINING PROGRAM, REMEMBER IS NOT JUST PASSING THE EXAM IS REALLY KNOWING WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO START) AND I ALSO DO NOT RECOMMEND TO THIS BOOK AS THE ONLY STUDY SOURCE!! You will need comprehensive knowledge and previous experience to pass this (unless you are a genius!) and I also recommend CompTIA Press books over any other books, is worth it and you will be on a safer path to pass the exam
A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition (A+ Certification All in One Exam.......2007-10-09
This is a excellant study guide. Easy to understand and well written. I would recomend it to anyone studing for A+.
Very good book, passed the exam.......2007-10-07
This book was well written, and because of it I passed my exams. There were a couple spelling mistakes, but they are few and far between. Its getting a little bit outdated though, but its still enough to get you to pass. I would definitely read this book, but also have some supplementary reading too that would fill in what this book is missing.
The "Alpha Geek" Rules! .......2007-10-05
Winner!! Mike Meyers writes the perfect book covering all objectives on the A+ Certification exam. Don't be intimidated by the size of this book. The book is a great read and covers everything in a very organized manner. I was able to pass both exams on the first try using this book and the A+ Passport book for a quick review before taking the exams. If you carefully read through the material, you should be able to pass with no problems. I can see now why so many technical college (including mine) in my state use this book as the main study guide. A job well done Mr. Meyers.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Targeted Learning.......2007-10-03
The CISA exam is written in a way to reflect the choices an auditor faces. What's best, what's the most preferred, etc., tend to be the types of questions one faces. (The CISA exam is not going to ask the test sitter, what is the best in a given environment, as that would be too ridiculous to measure.) As such, people often find the test confusing, because they want to read too much into the questions.
I picked this book up the week before the CISA exam and targeted my reading toward those areas in which I had the least experience (e.g. SDLC, etc) and I passed. That was it! Although not perfect, the book is readable and focused. There are some decent example questions at the back of the book that will prepare one for the types of questions on the test.
Good CISA study guide.......2007-09-11
This book is easy to read and it helps to study for the exam especially if you have CISA exam question CD.
I highly recomend it (and exam question CD too).
Good book, used it and passed Dec 2006 Exam. I am a CISA thanks to this book.......2007-08-15
Good book, used it and passed Dec 2006 Exam on my first attempt. I am a CISA, thanks to this book. The details are just what you need, the authors a did a good job, i recommend it to my brother and friends for Dec 07 Exams, and i talk about it to whoever care to listen.
A book does not need to be a hard core to be good, simple easy and straight forward that is why i like it. it gives you the details,it is a good manual.
Used it to pass the June 2007 exam.......2007-08-10
I just found out that I passed the June 2007 exam. I used 2 items to study.
This book and the question and answer database from ISACA.
First, do not try to use this book alone.
Second, dont even waste your time with the practice questions at the end of the chapter. You will never see questions like those on the exam.
Third, I would recommend the question and answer database. You will see questions like those on the exam.
After using this book and the Q&A database, the test was not that hard. I was not surprised by any questions.
Good study guide, but not enough for the exam.......2007-06-23
I took the exam two weeks ago and did really good. I would recommend studying ISACA's CISA review questions in addition to this book. Reading this book alone will not help you pass the exam. The concepts are well explained but the questions in the book are nothing like the ones in the exam.
Good luck

Fourth Edition
Foundation learning for CCNP 642-812 BCMSN
Richard Froom, CCIE® No. 5102
Balaji Sivasubramanian
Erum Frahim, CCIE No. 7549
Authorized Self-Study Guide: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN), Fourth Edition, is a Cisco® authorized, self-paced learning tool for CCNP® switching foundation learning. You will learn how to create scalable multilayer switched networks by installing, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting network infrastructure equipment for a campus switched network and integrate advanced technologies such as VoIP and wireless.
This comprehensive book provides detailed information and easy-to-grasp tutorials on advanced skills in design, configuration, operation, and troubleshooting of enterprise level switched networks, including converged IP data, voice, and Airespace wireless LAN (WLAN) connectivity. The book assumes only a basic understanding of networking so it provides a great deal of detail on the topics covered.
This book is ideal for certification candidates who are seeking a self-paced tool to learn the material covered in the latest BCMSN exam.
Each chapter opens with the list of topics covered to clearly identify the focus of that chapter. At the end of each chapter, Study Tips list the main points related to the BCMSN exam. A summary of key concepts for quick study and review questions provide you with an opportunity to assess and reinforce your understanding of the material. Real-world case studies help illuminate theoretical concepts.
In addition, chapters that cover Catalyst configurations also include configuration exercises. Most of these are small-scale exercises that can be performed on a single switch. The goal of using small-scale exercises is to enable network professionals to practice the configuration exercises with only a single switch.
Richard Froom, CCIE® No. 5102, is a technical leader for the Data Center, Switching and Wireless (DSW), and Storage Area Networking (SAN) Test Lab at Cisco.
Balaji Sivasubramanian, CCNP, is an escalation engineer for the Gigabit Switching Business Unit (GSBU) at Cisco.
Erum Frahim, CCIE No. 7549, is a senior support engineer working for the Data Center, DSW, and SAN Test Lab at Cisco.

Customer Reviews:
so far so good..........2007-09-28
I bought this book to start studying for CCNP however Ive been to busy to use it for that. however I do use it as a daily reference for work related issues. Its a great basic guide for anyone who uses multilayer switching in their network.
Poorly written.......2007-09-27
I'm sure the authors know the material inside and out. Unfortunately, they don't do a good job of communicating that knowledge to the reader. The book is poorly written. The authors go in for very long sentences. Sentences are typically 30 to 60 words long. Many of those sentences could have been bulleted lists. That would have greatly enhanced the readability of the book. Sentence structure is not the only problem. Many of the explanations are confusing and vague. I often had to read paragraphs several times before they made sense to me. Terms are used before they are defined. The authors are needlessly repetitive, with slightly different information in each repetition. I don't recommend this book. If you can, find an alternative.
Would not reccomend for studying for the BCMSN.......2007-06-04
I purchased this book 3 weeks ago to begin studying for the BCMSN. This book is not written with any flow at all. The authors will spend 4 or 5 pages previewing the chapter and using terms they haven't even defined yet. This is very frustrating when studying. I have also found technical errors so far through the first 4 chapters. I thought I was going crazy at first but I went back and found where they described one thing one way in the chapter and described it another way later in the chapter.
I would not reccommend this book.
MUST Have for any Cisco Network Administrator.......2007-06-04
This book clearly demonstrates that the authors have "been there, done that."
Liberal sets of both CatOS and IOS examples should appeal to admins at sites where 65xx Hybrid and/or Native OS are being used, and where 45xx's with older and/or newer supervisor modules are being used. The chapter on IP Telephony was quite insightful.
A Review for the Exam and a Reference Book.......2007-03-07
This is the fourth edition of this book. With each edition of the book major changes have been required to keep up with the rapid changes in the switches themselves. Originally the switches were relatively simple things that handled Layer 3 switching only. Since then they have added layers 4, 5, 6, and 7. Now they are including wireless. Further, the progress of switching has moved from large enterprises and service providers down to even the consumer level. Switching was part of the network infrastructure. As this book says, switching is now the network.
This book obviously concentrates on the Cisco approach to multilayer switching. This is not a particular problem since it is hard to image a network that doesn't contain at least some Cisco equipment. While the book is intended as primarily a self paced study guide to preparing for the BCMSN certification exam, it goes beyond the 'cram for the test' approach to provide the reader with a true understanding of building a network. The book is also designed to serve as a reference book for people looking to solve some particular problem as they establish the network.
The authors believe that readers should have a basic understanding of networking before starting this book. They suggest that having a CCNA or equivalent level of knowledge would help in taking full advantage of the topics covered.

Customer Reviews:
GOOD BOOK, IT'S HELPING ME IN MY PROFESSION.......2007-01-20
IT IS THE GOODEST BUY I DID FOR MY PROFESSION. IT'S HELPING ME TO STUDY FOR THE CCNA CERTIFICATION EXAM
INTRO to CCNA.......2007-01-12
Very good in showing real world examples with full explainations. Recommened to all those interested in passing the Intro CCNA exam
Good Overview of Cisco Basics.......2006-12-14
I read two Cisco preparation books prior to getting my hands on this one. Wendell Odom did a fantastic job of covering the basics of Cisco networking. If you plan on buying this book for the 640-801 exam, you should also consider his other book CCNA ICND (ISBN: 158720-083-X). Utilizing these two books really clarified any questions I had about Cisco switching and routing. This particular book is very basic and it describes much of the regular networking concepts in first few chapters. It then jumps into subnetting, VLANS and routing protocols. If you purchase the ICND book, these topics will be covered in much greater detail. Overall, the book is an excellent source in preparing for the CCNA exam.
I give this book a D+.......2006-08-25
I read the book cover to cover. Usally the book titled for the exam covers what is on the exam but this book does a poor job. Most of the Intro test is Subneting and Cisco commands while the book spends 3 out of 16 chapters on what is really important for the exam. One chapter for Subnetting I cant believe that. Its needs many more examples also for subneting the CD isn't enough. Don't even bother with the two chapters on commands just get your self a lab or Bosons. I just wish I had not wasted my time reading cover to cover. I wish I just got S..bex or some other book sooner I also used a video series. Pasted my exam its not that bad if you are studying the right stuff.
Fantastic Book.......2006-06-08
This book was fantastic. Absolutely recommend it - used it to pass the full CCNA exam the first time. Also get the ICND book by Wendell Odom as well - the full CCNA exam is better covered by the ICND book.
Unlike other certification books, both this book and the ICND book actually teach the subject matter, rather than teaching the test. The exams were very effective at uncovering weak areas.
Buy it and the ICND book by Wendell Odom for sure if you are preparing for the CCNA exam.

Customer Reviews:
Overpriced, misaligned, bloated + boring = 2 stars.......2006-07-13
I gave this book 2 stars because it's overpriced, misaligned, bloated and quite boring. Lots of time, Kramer used 200 words to explain something when 50 would have been enough. There's alot of minor errors + many cases where the author is completely wrong. The content covers CISA's material but it simply does not match with CISA's domains. If I had to throw a stone to someone, that would be to the editor cos that guy simply did not do his job. There's way too many content errors, spelling mistakes and ambiguous sentences.
To wrap thing up, it's a subpar book with an hefty price tag. I would NOT recommand it to anyone taking an ISACA exam. Your $$$ would be better spent buying the official CRM 2006.
Obtuse and perhaps worthless.......2005-05-13
Why use 1 word when 12 will bewilder the reader and make the book that much thicker. I can not believe that a qualified editor reviewed this book.
The wheat to chaff ratio is horrendous. You can go whole paragraphs without coming upon anything worth knowing.
I can only hope that the actual CISA exam questions are not written as poorly as the sample questions within this book.
If you value your time, do not buy this book.
Don't waste your money.......2005-03-05
I purchased this book -- unfortunately before I read the reviews here -- to prepare for the CISA. Despite the optimistic title, the book fails to deliver in just about every area. The book is not connected to the exam in any logical form or structure. One of the biggest draws for a book like this is the practice test software. Sadly, this book fails yet again. The software works, but the questions in some cases are just plain wrong! I wrote to the editor and they offered me an errata sheet that I could use to spot mistakes in their data???? What good is that? My advice is that you skip this book, avoid this author, and not patronize this publisher since they are not willing to make good on their promises.
CISA Prep Guide, not entirely useless.......2005-02-18
I purchased this guide, after 13 years of practical experience, mainly for the test materials. However, I did attempt to read the book, and must say that it is a chore. The author's style and usage leave much to be desired.
Most troublesome were the obvious inconsistencies within the test materials. The test results showed that answers correctly chosen were often scored as wrong, and some wrongly chosen were often scored as correct. It's as if they updated the software to "mix it up" between revisions, but failed to update the actual answers to correspond with the changes.
I did complain to the publisher and ask for an updated software version, but only received back that they would check with the author. I have since heard nothing. Of course, when you are preparing for a test, the main thing you are looking for in a review system is accuracy ... on this account the book and software fail.
I don't recommend this book if you are seriously considering taking the exam and want to review.
Fire the Editor!.......2004-06-09
I am an IS professional with 25 years of experience but it's been 6 years since I took a certification test. I needed the book to codify what I already knew from experience. I found the actual subject matter of the book to be adequate, but the author often took 500 words to say what could have been said in 50. And then he often said it wrong! And with bad grammer and incomplete sentences. I was as angry at the book editor as I was with the author. I kept thinking that English must not be the author's native language, but even so, the editor didn't do his job. That's probably why an updated version has not been issued. Get a new author! Get a new editor!
The software also was bad. I have used Boson software and tests before and found them very good. The test engine may work great, but if the data is wrong, it doesn't matter how great the engine is.
Bottom line - don't buy this book. Get the ISACA study materials. It'll cost three times a much, but it'll be worth it.

Road to Success.......2007-08-15
I used this book by Patrick Sweeney, RFID+ Study Guide by Paul Sanghera, and RFID+ Flashcard Quicklet by Paul Sanghera to prepare for the RFID+ exam. I passed the RFID+ exam on first try. I'm a project manager with science background and wanted this certification for some of my projects. These are the only three books that you need to pass the exam. Two thumbs up for all these three books: they're the road to success
Not Bad.......2007-04-30
I found this a good book on RFID+ exam, but do not count on it alone. Here are the reasons:
* The coverage of the topics is extremely brief. This is also the problem with many other RFID+ books, though.
* The exam objectives are listed in the beginning of each chapter but so often it's hard to find where in the chapter the objective is actually covered...and as I said, if there is a coverage, it is very brief.
* Lots of the stuff and coverage that should be there is missing, whereas some unnecessary stuff is there...For example Maxwell's equations...
* From the presentation of the material, it's obvious that the book is written for the experts. If you are a beginner, do not use this book as your first RFID or RFID+ book.
*The book has its share of typos and errors; I hope the publisher will provide an Errata.
Bottom line: it's a good book, but do not count on it alone and don't use it as your first RFID book.
Excellent reference.......2007-02-02
This book is written by the CEO of a well-known RFID consulting firm who knows his stuff. In addition to the basic technology facts, there is plenty of experienced wisdom included. This book goes much farther than the CompTIA cram guide. There's a lot of content that is not directly applicable to the exam and the author to his credit points out when that is the case. If you are planning an RFID career, then these insights and process descriptions from an experienced industry leader are priceless.
The book is very clearly written. 20 practice questions per chapter is generous, there are ~140 questions across 3 practice exams and there are ~150 flash card questions you can playback on a PC, PPC, or Palm. A great value overall.
This book is not sufficient by itself to prepare you for the actual exam. There were numerous questions on the actual exam that were not covered in this book. The actual exam is always somewhat of a moving target, so this is to be expected to some degree.
Bottom line: Excellent book, good value, plan on supplementing it with ~1-2 others. (I supplemented it with official CompTIA cram guide and the two combined still had quite a few gaps relative to the actual exam).
Complete Test Coverage and Good Summary of the Field.......2007-01-18
Radio Frequency Identification has become a fastest growing area. The technology, after some spectacular failings in the beginning when people didn't know what they were doing, has enabled some spectacular acomplishments. One of my favorites was putting an RFID device into the collar of guard dogs. That way they could track the dog as he entered his pen or went out on duty.
With any emerging technology, there will soon be certification testing to be sure that people working in the field have at least a minimal amount of knowledge about the subject. This book covers the CompTIA exam RFO-001. It covers everthing that is on the test and includes a CD that has a test engine and a practice test that closely mimics the real exam. It also has a series of flash cards that you can run on your PC, Pocket PC or Palm handheld. The CD also has a copy of the entire book in PDF format so you can put it on your notebook and take it where ever you go.
In reading this book, I found it to be more helpful than just cramming for the exam. It covers the material very well, and after reading it, you'll have a feeling for the entire subject.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent advice on the basics.......2001-04-12
This book addresses the essence of support - people skills. State-of-the-art tools and technology, and the most efficient processes ever devised will not guarantee a successful help desk or technical support organization if the human interaction techniques provided in this book are not used.
Ms. Knapp provides every essential skill in a systematic order. She starts with an excellent, astute discussion on the key elements of achieving customer satisfaction, then begins the systematic process of describing how to develop and use the necessary skills for achieving this goal. This starting point is the most basic skill that is as important to our everyday life as it is to customer satisfaction: listening. This is also a skill that, regrettably, most of us need to continually work on. She gives excellent advice on how to be an active and empathetic listener, and also how to effectively communicate back to the speaker. This skill is reinforced with another that is essential to providing top notch customer support: telephone skills. A telephone, even with the growing trend toward e-support and electronic mail, is still a help desk (and call center) professional's primary tool. Because we cannot depend on facial expression or body language it is of the utmost importance to not only have good phone skills, but to also use these skills in conjunction with listening skills to "read" the customer's mood and adjust our approach accordingly.
Writing skills, the next basic skill that Ms. Knapp addresses, has always been important. This is because documenting issues and actions conveying this to other support professionals who may also work on an incident of case cuts down on unnecessary follow-ups that poorly written documentation causes. Also, this skill is rapidly growing in importance because of the increasing use of e-mail as a customer communications vehicle. The tips on writing given are excellent.
Difficult customers are a way of life. Someone who is frustrated enough to pick up a phone or who feels resentment towards the organization whose products or services you are supporting is going to want to take it out on the first person who answers the phone. Defusing these situations and refocusing angry customers on the issues instead of emotions requires real skills and the ability to subordinate your own emotions. Ms. Knapp gives excellent advice on how to handle irritated customers and, believe it or not, turn the experience into one in which the customer comes away not only satisfied, but a good reference for your product or service. This is one of the most valuable parts of the book and my personal favorite.
The remainder of this book covers problem solving (and prevention) techniques, team building and some great advice on how to relieve stress and keep from burning out. All in all, this is an excellent book that should be read by help desk and call center professionals (as well as tier-2 support analysts), and can be effectively used as a training outline by help desk and call center managers.

For those interested not just in passing a certification exam but in truly understanding what makes networks tick, Network+ Certification Study System won't disappoint. Authored by one of the subject matter experts who helped create the Network+ exam, Joseph J. Byrne, this book is an excellent guide not only to the test but to the underlying principles of computer networks.
This two-part book includes an excellent glossary with basic explanations of networking-related items. Byrne's definition of a local area network (LAN) is a good example: "A LAN is a communications system much like a telephone system except that data, not voices, is usually shared. In recent years, the term network is often substituted when describing a LAN." Then there are sections that cover specific areas more fully, like the one on basic Ethernet concepts. It explains the data speeds at which Ethernet operates, explains that Ethernet breaks data into frames, and then details how each frame must be between 72 and 1,518 bytes and how you can tailor the size of the frame to improve network performance.
The book also discusses strategies for implementing a backup system, protecting the network from viruses, and troubleshooting. Byrne encapsulates his approach here, "This entire [troubleshooting] process is really twofold. First you need to get at the root of the problem, and second you need to fully document the process from problem to resolution." Each of the chapters ends with an exam preparation summary and a series of questions, the answers for which are provided in appendix 1. The chapters are also studded with exam prep pointers, which highlight those topics certain to be covered in the Network+ test. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt
Topics covered: Local and wide area networks; Ethernet; Token Ring; various cabling specifications; the OSI model; TCP/IP; remote access; network security; and how to install and maintain routers, hubs, and print servers.

This Book's More of a Liability Than An Asset.......2004-11-10
I purchased this book as a secondary reference but it contains so many blatant errors that it's become more of a liability than a resource. I've searched for errata online but couldn't find any, suggesting that the publisher isn't willing to offer help to beleaguered users. What's especially disconcerting is that this volume was authored by "a member of the i-Net+ exam objectives team" which made it sound like an authoritative resource. Typos are expected in something as dry as an IT resource but explanations that build on obviously incorrect information make you question the author's long list of credentials.
Excellent Core Network + Exam Guide.......2002-01-12
I tested and passed the Network + exam yesterday and this book was my central study guide for the exam. The book contains a lot of information for 275 pages. The book provides step by step insight into networking which results in a mental framework of how various network types, topoligies and protocols work. The enclosed BeachFront Quizzer is a big help too! If you are inexperienced at networking you may also find it helpful to purchase The Encyclopedia of Networking by Osborne-McGraw Hill and TCP/IP Clearly Explained by Pete Loshin of Byte Magazine, and NT Server 4.0 by Osborne-McGraw Hill. These books will provide a greater level of comprehensive information, such as how individual routing protocols work, cable properites, etc.
A solid foundation (but not the whole building).......2001-08-15
Joseph Byrne's study guide is an excellent introduction to local area networking. The author writes with uncommon clarity and the material is comprehensive (if occasionally lacking in detail), focusing not only on technology but also on the "soft skills" and best practices of network technicians, the sorts of things that get and keep you employed. Any novice to the field should seriously consider this book as his or her starting point.
That said, I don't believe that this book alone will prepare anyone without significant experience to pass the Network+ exam (especially the 2001 objectives). It is Windows-centric and core concepts such as the OSI model, IP addressing, and name resolution demand more detail. And yes, as other reviewers have said, there are a few irritating typos. Despite these irritations, the book and bundled CD were very useful during my certification preparation, and they'll probably help you, too.
Well worth the price.......2000-06-03
This book is very well written and easy to understand. This is the only book I used to prepare myself for the exam. The exam pointers and practice questions were very helpful. The book covers just about all material on the exam, I only encounterd one question on the exam that wasn't covered in the book. Anyone that spends the time to read this book inside and out should pass the exam. I passed with an 89%.
FAILING GRADE.......2000-04-13
DO NOT get this book if you want to pass the exam. I took the exam and received a 78. I researched the questions that I missed and none of the material was covered in Joseph Byrne's book. Buy the Network+ Study Guide by David Groth since all of the questions that I missed were covered in it. I wasted $40 on Mr. Byrne's book, $140 on the exam, and three months of studying.

MCSE S/P KIT WINDOWS SVR 2003 CORE REQUIREMENTS
Amazon.com
In the certification craze of 1999-2001, tens of thousands of people earned their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) ratings. Those certifications are expiring now, just as Microsoft is coming out with Windows Server 2003 to replace the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. There may be a real opportunity for those who earn the Windows Server 2003 certification--and that's where MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements comes in. This four-book set (which comes with quiz software and a 180-day laboratory version of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, plus a coupon for 15 percent off the cost of each of the four exams), combined with some hands-on practical work, should be all you need to earn the new MCSE rating or the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification.
Each of the four books (each with a separate author) covers the published requirements of a single exam. Coverage tends to be text-heavy--even procedures rely mostly on text and use few screen shots. This goes to reinforce the fact that these are serious books for people with a pretty good idea of what they're doing already. Chapters typically begin with conceptual coverage of their subjects (using diagrams to illustrate the relationships among network entities in many cases) and move on to illustrative procedures to try. Chapters then conclude with carefully considered discussion questions. The answers to the questions appear in an appendix, complete with explanations of why the correct answers are what they are. --David Wall
Topics covered: The published exam requirements for the MCSE/MCSA core exams: "Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Environment" (70-290), "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure" (70-294), "Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-291), and "Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure" (70-293).

Uhhh...........2007-08-08
I'm still trying to get through the first book 2 years later. But what's the hurry? I can always start my training tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow...
Seriously, though, these books look a lot like the ones I used to study for my first MCSE, on NT4. Full of most of what you need to pass the exam, plus a lot of junk you don't. I think they're an attempt to trick/force you into learning enough to be more than a paper MCSE while soaking up enough info to pass the test.
The "knowledge" contained herein is no substitute for real world experience, but is daunting to tackle even for a seasoned professional. If you really know computers, and just want test info, I'd recommend something like the Transcender exams instead.
Redundancy at it's best.. If you have 70-291 and 70-298, you have just about the whole 70-293.......2007-04-28
I have just gone through the 70-291 and 70-298 books, and went through this one ..... and was gravely dissapointed.. I felt like I was reading the same material as I just finished.. So with that said, I believe if you are going for tests, and you already own 70-291 and 70-298 there is no reason to go out and get the MSPress of 70-293 since the material would have already been covered...
GET IT TOGETHER AMAZON. .......2007-02-23
I got a copy of the MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Core Requirements, Exams 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, 70-294.I was very upset when I noticed that one of the books had a huge tear on the back cover. When you pay $200.00 for brand new books, in a sealed state they should be new when you take them out of the box , not dirty and beat up. Get it together Amazon.
Excellent content.......2007-01-12
All you need to know to sort out the 90% of the Administration issues in the every day administrator's life. Must have.
Ok, but needs a lot of work to be a real test prep guide........2006-12-12
One would think that a Microsoft Press book would be better edited; more technically detailed and have more thogrough explanations. But one would be wrong if they thought so. Microsoft, it seems to this reader, slapped together this study guide to make a couple of extra bucks or to just keep the writers busy. The level of user experience listed in the guides as a prerequisite for taking the MCSE exams is greater than the level that the books are geared for. If one has the prerequisite level of experience recommended in the guides then these books will be well below your experience level. However if you are very new to Active Directory and server environments this study guide will give you a fair introduction.
I will say this about Planning and Maintaining Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure by Craig Zacker, Mr. Zacker does not have any MS certifications which does not induce a lot of confidence of the author, and omits lots of really important technical information that is very relevant to planning a network, especially his descriptions of TCP/IP planning and sub netting. I noticed several typos and even some incorrect lab answers in each of the books.
All of the labs and diagnostic procedures are done the Microsoft way, which occasionally is not the way that things are done in the real world.
Trancender tests are ok, but Testking prep tests are way better.

Not up to CCIE standard.......2005-01-08
Sorry Cisco I love your stuff but this book falls well below the standard I would expect from one of your publications. I'm a CCIE I passed my lab Jan 2001 and took my recertification 2 years ago in IP routing. My job has changed a little since then and I no longer have as much routing exposure as I used too I'm now all LAN at a large datacenter and some OSPF. Anyway I got this book to help me with my second recert, I wanted a quick read it once and pass it guide. Well with the CCIE its just not possible, sorry but its simply not that type of certification not even the written you need to know this stuff DEEP, no shortcuts IMHO.
This book promises a lot but simply does not live up to it, as a CCIE I used this book to take my recert and failed. So I hit the real books, the one's that got me through the exam and lab 6 years ago, TCP/IP Volume 1 and now Volume 2 by Jeff Doyle, Lan switching for CCIE's, and Internet routing architectures from Halibi (BGP is also covered in the Doyle V2 book now), and passed the written exam with a 93%. I would also add a Cisco specific QoS book to the reading list as well for the 350-001 exam as there was a lot of QoS in the exam and Doyle does not cover it.
The titles above brought a lot stuff flooding back to me, stuff I forgot and stuff that the certification guides like this one were not able to restore from my memory.
Believe me there are no shortcuts to getting this I should know it cost me over $300 for the exam and 160 bucks on 2 certification books to find that out, oh yeah this also applies to the flash card book for the CCIE written also available from Cisco.
Positives are that the book does have a good general coverage of the subjects for day to day referance but no where near deep enougth and links to websites with the rest of the info you need but with this book and the flashcard book alone your not going to pass this the written exam. Its way to deep an exam for that save your money and get the Doyle books.
Way Under Expectation.......2004-12-16
Hi,
I'm a CCNP and CCDA and I've always used CiscoPress Certifications books to prepare my exams.
I bought this book hoping that, as the others, it would give me all the elements to pass the test. Oh...if I was wrong.
Soon after starting reading it I realized that this book wasn't teaching anything. Each topic was just mentioned and not really unfold as the exam requires.
I wasted a week reading it and...you know what? At the end I studied on my CCNP books, integrating what was missing with documents on Cisco CCO. I passed the written test this morning at the first try.
Don't waste you money on this. Please
Incomplete Material.......2004-10-26
I bought this book in hopes of having an all in one resource for the CCIE written exam. This book barely touches the surface of some very important concepts for the CCIE written exam and is not enough for any real world task.
Another issue I have, is the author uses all the acronyms, but doesn't write them out. I have a great deal of experience in working with many of these technologies, so it's not such a big deal for me, but others may find this frustrating.
The CCNP level books (Routing, Switching) cover the technologies in much greater detail. The exam certification guide is extremely weak, and maybe good for a quick refresher prior to takeing the exam, or perhaps recertifying. Otherwise, I'd look for better material.
Not a One-Stop Shop.......2004-08-19
I am reviewing the CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (ISBN 1587200538), which is the official preparation guide for the CCIE R&S exam from Cisco Press. The book weighs in at 688 pages, which is about right for a book of its type. The problem is that the type of book that it is doesn't really work for an exam like the CCIE. If we were talking about the CCNA or one of the single CCNP exams, I'd say "sure, you can get it all in one book", but not the CCIE. This book is a lot like reading a menu in that you get enough information to get you interested in a topic and decide if you need to learn more. The problem, however, is that in the case of the CCIE exam, you don't need a menu, you need a cookbook! The actual purpose of this book, as stated in the Foreword, is that it should act as a late-stage exam preparation tool to help you assess our strengths and weaknesses and focus your study. Basically, once you've gotten to that late stage, you've been reading for about six months and all this book does is breezes over all of the stuff that you've already learned. Occasionally, you might hit something you haven't read before and might take a moment to fill in that particular gap, but largely you feel like you're wasting your time. A book covering this wide a range of topics is easy to stall out on. If you feel like you're not getting anything out of your valuable reading time, you really have no motivation to keep going. I personally stopped this thing halfway through, read a book on poker and then came back to it.
I think a better approach to future editions of this book might be to rewrite it as a preliminary study tool for the CCIE. They could take each of the blueprint objectives and write a chapter which explains in detail what knowledge and experience you need to have in order to pass that objective. Readers could use the end-of-the-chapter assessments to make a judgment call on how much studying they need to do on that objective. Each chapter should also make suggestion of where the reader could go to get additional knowledge on the topics covered in that chapter. See, what I was missing early on in my CCIE studies was a "test prep quarterback" to point me in the right direction. I think this book would keep the reader's attention better if it was recommended as the first thing to do in the test prep process, not the last.
Okay, okay... I think I've dwelled on the negatives quite long enough. There are some things I really liked about this book. First off, since it's widely known that CCIE candidates can never get enough practice questions, it'll be no surprise that I liked having the practice exam on the CD. I also liked the Scenarios at the end of each chapter. They really made you think and try to apply what you've read. I'd like to see an entire book of them. I also found the authors style to be very readable. Anthony Bruno took the challenge of writing a book that covers the entire CCIE blueprint and got it all into 688 pages. That takes a very concise writing style, and he pulls it off.
In conclusion, I'd have to say that I'd recommend this book to others, but as a preliminary guide and not as a final exam prep tool. Someone coming in cold, or even coming off of the CCNP exams, would really benefit from this book as indoctrination into the level of study necessary to prepare for the CCIE. I'd warn them, however, that this book isn't meant to be used as a one-stop shop. You really must read other books and get a lot more information off of CCO in order to prepare properly for the CCIE.
I give this book a 3 on my 5 ping rating scale.

Not a good resource for the test.......2004-06-30
I am really surprised that this book is even passed off as a resouce to use by Cisco to pass the test. It touches on alot of things but only at a surface level. If you do pass the written it will not be because you read this book. Take my advice and the advice of others: save your money and spend it on the book by Rob Payne et al.
This is somewhat of a shock and disappointment because I used Bruno's CCDA book to prepare for that test and it was an excellent resource.
