A Potty for Me!: A Lift-the-Flap Instruction Manual
ASIN: 0375810455
Release Date: 2000-09-26 |
Book Description
Baby Ernie is too big for diapers! He's ready to try out his brand-new potty. It may take a few tries, but soon Ernie learns he can use the potty all by himself!
Customer Reviews:
Cute story!.......2007-09-22
My daughter loves this book and reads it quite frequently. She still hasn't shown much interest in the potty though.
not much there.......2007-09-18
Baby Ernie is cute but this book was too short and simplistic for our 2-year-old. Hardly any text. It didn't offer much information. It's more like a baby's book, and babies don't need to learn about using potties! I've seen MUCH better books out there on potty-training.
Good help!.......2007-09-13
My son is off diaper after reading this book several times. It is one of the help if the kid loves Sesame Street.
Too Big for the Book.......2007-09-10
My very big boy thought he was too big to read the book, at first. Then he started agreeing with what the book was talking about. He has been trying to be a big boy for everything, except the potty. Now with the help of the book and Potty Power...he's got it!
cute.......2007-07-26
Very cute book. I did have to change the words to fit into what we were teaching our little one to call his body's fuctions.

Want to Be

THIS COLLECTION IS BUT A HINT OF THE MAN'S GENIUS.......2007-09-02
I grew up listening to Tom Lehrer's records (played on our Victrola). And, although I wasn't worldly enough to understand some of the more perverse lyrics, my sister and I would belt out his songs with great enthusiasm. The fact that, as a kindergartner, I stood up and sang one of his compositions during "show and tell" is a testimony to...uh...something...I'm not quite sure. However, I clearly remember my mother's horror at being called by my teacher about the content of my presentation. Years later we could both laugh. Thank God Mrs. Ernstein had a good sense of humor. Thank God too that CPS was not in existence in the early 60s.
My point? Mr/Dr (never was sure of his academic title) Lehrer's ability to put into song politically incorrect "We don't talk about it" issues made me a fan for life. My own children have gotten a healthy dose of his humor, and compare him to Weird Al and others of their generation. Weird Al has a long way to go before he can hope to eclipse the senator of sarcasm.
So, for those of you with a bit of a twisted sense of humor (and the ability to read music/play the piano), this is a great piece of musical history, psycho sing-along material, and a chance to keep one man's sense of the ridiculous alive.
P.S. I was never called by any teacher regarding the contents of my children's musical presentations. Live and learn.
Loads of fun.......2007-03-14
Hilarious and dark songs by the master of musical gallows humor. The song choices are extensive and well picked. Only complaint is that Lobachevsky and New Math don't have chords/scores for large portions, just the lyrics.
You can never have too many Tom Lehrer songs!.......2007-01-23
I bought the song book along with "The Remains of Tom Lehrer" (three CD's and a biographical book). A great purchase for us dead-hard Lehrer fans.
I was delighted that I bought the song book as I can now sing (out of tune) and strum my guitar (rather badly) to many of his infamous songs and annoy the hell out of my children.
tom lehrer book.......2006-11-11
good book, great choice of repertoire- his sonds are a bit grisly but perfect if you need something to wake the audience up! definitely got my money's worth.
So long mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, so don't wait up for me.......2006-08-14
Yes, this is the book you definitely want to have! Every Tom Lehrer song you can think of--and probably many you can't-are here in a fairly easy piano format. If you can't play piano, you can probably read the lyrics. If you can't read the lyrics, you're probably not reading this, but you can still see the drawings by Ronald Searle, which are pretty funny in their own right. If you can't see the drawings by Ronald Searle, I can't help you.
The lyrics are also contained, of course. And besides the satirical songs Mr. Lehrer recorded in the sixties, the book also contains the songs he wrote for the Electric Company in the seventies, like "Silent E" ("Who can turn a can, into a cane", etc.) and "L-Y".
The only problem I have with this book is that I believe all music books that are meant to be used for playing instruments should be spiral bound or otherwise fixed such that they don't fall apart. Since this one has a regular glued binding, of course after a few rounds with "A Song for World War III" and "New Math", all the pages fell out. So to the publisher: please make a spiral bound edition! Then I will give this book 5 stars!
Book Description
The time has come, argues Dr. Wess Stafford, for a major paradigm shift: Children are too important and too intensely loved by God to be left behind or left to chance. Children belong to all of us and we are compelled to intervene on their behalf. We must invest in children–all across the world.
There are strategic, persuasive reasons–beyond love and kindness–to invest in children. Today they may snuggle into your lap, if you let them. But tomorrow you may not have access to them in the corridors of power they might occupy. Now is the time to shape the future.
Dr. Stafford issues an urgent call for change. His adventures as a boy raised in a West African village provide an often-humorous and always-captivating backdrop to his profound and inspiring challenges. Wess lived the reality of “it takes a village to raise a child” and calls us to “be that loving village for children everywhere.”
This book will encourage you to turn your good, loving intentions into strategic actions and empower you to help change the world–and the future–forever: one child at a time.

Great read.......2007-10-20
Sensitive readers should be aware there is a discussion of the experience of child abuse.
Inspirational Eye Opener - rethink children's role in our priveledged society.......2007-09-03
This book is a wonderful eye opener that guides the reader through a journey of experiences on so many levels. A MUST READ for any and everyone who cares about the future of our society, our world - which is our children. It raises many questions that need our attention BOTH WORLD WIDE AND IN OUR PRIVELEDGED COUNTRY OF THE USA. As a Mother, the book speaks to my heart and covers so many topics I have thought about and struggled with as I am challenged to raise connected loving children in this priveledged distracted media intensive society.
Please read it and change the world one child at a time starting with the children you know. It can be done and the author explains how.
Then buy a copy for everyone you love.
A Must Read!.......2007-08-01
Every human being NEEDS to read this book! Children are our future and should be most important! A wonderful book and one that I will be passing on!

Too Small to Ignore.......2006-11-10
Informative, well written, and disturbing regarding the abuse that the author and other children suffer in terms of their caretakers. At the same time uplifting in terms of the author being able to overcome the effects of his childhood abuse.

Customer Reviews:
What an excellent tool!.......2007-09-30
This book is an excellent tool for children having diffiulties controlling their emotions. The visual thermometer and the "social story" makes it very helpful to assist these children to learn how to respond to their feelings/emotions more appropriately. My four year old likes to look at his thermometer and read the story every time he has reached a "5". It's been very helpful for him.
An excellent tool for dealing with anxiety in children!.......2007-08-18
I am a behavioral therapist treating children with Autism and so far this book has proved to be a vital tool for dealing with anxiety-related behaviors. The number/rating scale helps children gauge their own level of anxiety without having to come up with the right words to say and then gives them the tools to calm themselves down instead of hitting, biting, etc. Highly recommended!!
Great Resource for Kids Who Struggle With Strong Emotions.......2007-05-06
I'd say for toddler through 8 years (emotional/social scale). Wonderful book to give alternatives to hitting, biting, etc.
Book Description
As a medical doctor who has personally struggled with his weight, Dr. Nick Yphantides can empathize with the plight of the overweight and offer a proven, medically safe plan for losing weight. In
My Big Fat Greek Diet, he teaches readers the powerful 7 Pillars of Weight Loss. His program features practical how-tos anyone can apply, whether they need to lose 10 or 300 pounds. Analyzing components of a variety of well-known diets, Dr. Nick assists readers in customizing a weight-loss program that will handle their specific needs and fit their lifestyles.
The son of a Greek immigrant, Dr. Nick was known in San Diego as a big man with a big heart. Topping out at 467 pounds, he was a thirty-something, larger-than-life advocate for the poor who seemed like a jolly fat man. But when a battle with cancer inspired him to focus on his own health, he embarked on a lifestyle change that would drop him to a svelte 200 pounds. His book will inspire and equip readers to design their own weight-loss program around an "odyssey" that makes their heart sing and allows them to experience their own weight-loss miracle!
Customer Reviews:
Well done, but not enough God........2007-09-19
I for one grabbed this book because I heard Dr. Nick on "Focus on the family" in an interview and again on another radio interview and held him to be a Christian based diet author with personal experience and a wealth of knowledge about the medical side of getting thin. However, the book came across to me as an attempt to appeal to the masses and sort of put the credit to God on the back burner or off to the side or in the shadows and I can't be as inspired by that as a christian or for that matter, before my salvation. I did learn some great insights from Dr. Nick but I am a believer in the power of God to do everything and that just didn't come accross in this book. So with regret I say this book is a testament to Dr. Nicks' great triumph over the "Idolotry" of food as he said in his interview, but it just didn't get me to go along. I hope he will in the future let his faith be more prominent in his story telling and trust in our Lord for the results more than his publisher. If you would like a good hepful book as a compliment to this one may I suggest,Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength
My Big Fat Greek Diet.......2007-05-15
Interesting in how he lost weight. We all do not have the money to do as he did. But it had to be hard for him to hold to what he had started. same as any diet. The change first has to be in your mind and heart before it will become part of your outsides. Believe first see results later.
This book is a heavy weight.......2006-09-11
I loved this book. I believe that I would have liked it even if I were not fighting weight problems. It is entertaining and educational in ways that few books are. Frankly, I generally do not believe that a book can be educational if it is not also entertaining. This is a difficult standard to meet, but Dr. Nick has done it.
Unfortunately, it will be hard to duplicate his method because few of us can take a year or so away from employment--even for life saving therapy.
I see that used copies are selling very cheap here at Amazon making the ultimate combination--education, entertainment, and value. Order several copies of this book to use as gifts.
Big fat Greek Miracle! And WONDERFULLY BLESSED!!!.......2006-08-05
DO NOT think that I simply stumbled onto this. Well, OK, I did when I least expected it, but this wasn't the first I'd heard of Nick Yphantides (pronounced Eee-fahn-tee-dees) or as people call him, Dr. Nick. I'd heard his testimony on "Focus on the Family". So did that set me up? I don't know. I really don't care either! What I DID know was that when I found, "My Big Fat Greek Diet", it was MINE!!! Yeah, I'm overweight. But I loved Nick's story, and I really, REALLY love baseball! He experiences this journey with an awesome God!
I just wondered if Dr. Dobson overhyped the book, or was this going to be something good. I kept wondering if this would be something good. Nah, it wasn't good, it was GREAT! Small illustration: A lot of people enjoy Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. There is a lot that can be said about Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, right? But only Tony the Tiger sums it up perfectly. Tony says, "They're GGGGRRRREEEAAATTTT!!!" That's how I sum up this book. I flipped through the pages from the Last Supper (that's classic!) at Ruth's Chris Steak House with his dad and brothers, to his pilgrimage to all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums to see baseball games. The baseball games started with the L.A. Dodgers. Wow! He talks about the hunger pains. He makes you laugh. But he RIPS himself wide open, to let us see what was really going on. Amazing! You feel the humiliation when he relives stepping on the scales naked, and discovering that he weighed 467 pounds. He vividly tells of the temptation to get Garlic Fries Qualcomm in San Diego, or the carnal desire to tie up the Dodger Dog vendor in Dodger Stadium and take all his food! I laughed my tail off. But I also realized that he was making this drastic change. There was a point to drinking protein shakes, and it was a lifetime change! OH, and you know how everybody has a fish story at some point or another? Wait to hear this fish story! Real fish, true story. It just goes to show you how God's hand was in on this THE WHOLE WAY!
Nick encourages us. For example, eat to live, don't just live to eat. When he was obese, he lived to eat, now he eats to live, by eating the right foods, at the right time, and for the correct reasons! I believe his seven pillars of weight loss and maintenance are vital, and it starts with pillar #1: Change the way you see before you change the way you look. What a statement! What a true statement. Beyond the pillars, he also gets very real. He explains the pros and cons (and they are mostly cons, people) of so-called Gastric bypass surgery. Nick sees Gastric Bypass as a last resort. The bottom line is simple. You have to want to lose weight, and keep it off, and make a LIFETIME CHANGE!
So hey! You might not want to read this. So don't read it, and live a dull, boring life with nothing else to lose. Either that, or like myself, you see TREASURE in this man's life, and you want a piece of it!! If that's you, then grab that sucker, and don't let go. Nick had the help of his family and friends, but most importantly, he had his Heavenly Father on his side. So do we, and if we ask, we just might recieve. You ready to ask? Dr. Nick Yphantides is a Big Fat Greek Miracle. He's also wonderfully blessed! I am wonderfully blessed to have been led to such a testimony. Thank you, Dr. Nick!
What an amazing and inspirational book!!!.......2006-05-29
It was the Christmas season of 2005 and I was desperate to loose weight. At my heaviest I was somewhere around 361lbs. During the previous year I had blown out both my knees while trying to work out so I was very depressed and didn't if I could ever loose the weight I needed to. Then a dear friend gave me a copy of Dr. Nick's book. I told her that I didn't really feel like reading it because it would be like all the other "diet" books out there. She assured me that I would love the book and to "please just read it". Folks, let me tell you, without a doubt, this has been one of the best books I have ever read. Here's a guy I could totally relate to. I didn't care that he was a huge baseball fan ... what hit me was how real this guy is from chapter to chapter. Dr. Nick opens his heart up and shares from the depth of his soul. Dr. Nick is a man who is deeply in love with Jesus and know's where his strength comes from and his mission is to share that hope with millions of people around the world suffering with obesity. Read the book ... then read it again. You will be so blessed. Dr. Nick also has a web site support group that you can join. All the information is found at the back of the book. I pray you will be as blessed as I was after reading this treasure!
Book Description
Let the irrepressible president of the Philadelphia 76ers show you how to succeed in this invaluable blueprint for business and life.
A pioneer in the sports physical therapy industry, Pat Croce went from the training room to the boardroom in one of the most unlikely stories in sports history -- a classic rags-to-riches tale made possible by his indestructible positive attitude. With the same unstoppable character that has made him a favorite motivational speaker of Fortune 500 executives, Croce recounts the moments that taught him to strive for and achieve greatness.
But I Feel Great and You Will Too! is more than just the story of one man's remarkable journey. Throughout this moving, often hilarious, and always brutally honest book, Croce hits you with pointers on goal setting, communication, creative thinking, desire, dedication, and much more. Croce also includes his "Ten Commandments of Customer Service," the same guidelines he used to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the sports industry.

Candles and you.......2007-02-15
One reviewer (from Moscow, Russian Federation) wrote:
"It is expecting success in the future and doing the best you can to help God make you prosper (and this does not mean lighting lots of candles in churches, at least not limited by that). "
Maybe the reviewer doesn't realize that God can only communicate via candles, which is why we light them. To omit the candles would be to nullify any aspect of the wish / prayer.
Do Good, Have Fun, and Enjoy the Wealth!!.......2003-11-26
There are several bloody good points in Pat Croce's book "I Feel Great and you will too!"
First and foremost, it is the power of positive attitude. According to Pat, it was his permanently positive attitude that helped him score big in life. A positive attitude, in turn, comes in several dimensions. It is self-confidence and sincere believing that life is an extremely great thing to experience. It is expecting success in the future and doing the best you can to help God make you prosper (and this does not mean lighting lots of candles in churches, at least not limited by that). It is pushing other people's limits, helping them achieve more than they have even dreamed of. It is "doing good" to "do well". And this all genuinely generates your excitement and further reinforces your positive attitude.
Pat also stresses the importance of balancing your passion and tolerance, the Yang and Yin, in doing things. Being an extremely choleric person himself, Pat emphaqsizes the importance of cultivating tolerance and caring, the Yin, while it is clear from the book that the lack of Yang (agression, energy and passion), or over-restraint of your Yang, can damage the optimal balance as much.
You have to have enough passion and energy to quickly rush into doing what you think is good and worthwile, to "buy" the minds and souls of your pals into the idea; but you also have to sometimes calm yourself down, sit still, and listen to the emotions, concerns and advice of others. Or, more in Pat Croce's style, to restraint yourself from getting too hot and breaking the skull & bones and ripping off the heart of someone who dared to say a bad word to you. And that all requires a good deal of Yin.
Being a physical therapist himself, Pat shamelessly advertises the healthy lifestyle (physical therapy in particular), and does that so damn great, that I just couldn't keep myself from going to the gym the day I finished his book. So if you wish you had yet another stimulus to get yourself to a fitness center - this book will be a double benefit for you.
Overall, the book is mostly a fun read, tells lots of interesting stories, and gives plenty of great advices. It also motivates you to do good things, become rich, engage in sport, and enjoy your life to the fulliest. A great book.
P.S. I recently heard Pat Croce live, and it's nice to see that he learns and progresses. His motivational speech was mostly based on the facts from this book, but they were used more skillfully and also demonstrated some important points that this book does not make clear. Holla at you, Pat!
Pat Croce feels great and I do too!.......2003-10-01
whether or not you know the name pat croce, once you read his inspirational story you can't help but know the name. his motivation and drive launched him from the training room of sports injuries to the front office of sports ownership. an endless go-getter who went and got, pat croce reminds the reader to be hopelessly positive. his 'ten commandments of customer service' is a bible of business. and if owning the 76ers basketball team and starting the high-altitude Slamball league weren't enough, Pat Croce is also a highly motivated motivational speaker, author, television personality, and as his book says 'big scorer.' he'll tell you the secrets to being able to drain that 3-pointer, block that kick, and make that sale (though not all at the same time)! don't think of him so much as an 'entrepreneur' but more as an 'encourageneur.' he even inspired me to write this review! read this book!
Just READ it Now!.......2003-07-10
There are useful pointers when you don't have the time to go through the 2nd or 3rd time. Also, Pat gets straight to the issues (i.e. not beating around the bush) to lengthen the book.
Trust me, it is worth your time and money. And yes, I FEEL GREAT !!! after reading this book.
I Feel Great and You Will Too!.......2003-01-02
I have followed the work and success of Pat Croce during the past 20 years. His life is the classic American rages to riches story. He is in your face with challenges, no excuses given or taken. His books [also 110 Percent] are inspirational, thought provoking, a good dose of smelling salts in the conformity of America's lackadaisical attitude of today regarding conducting oneself in day to day activities.
There are many excellent reminders throughout his book borrowed from other writers/poets. I especially enjoy his breakdown of G.R.E.A.T.
I have employed many of his points that I have learned over the years in business-and they WORK!
Book Description
The potential failure of a large bank presents vexing questions for policymakers. It poses significant risks to other financial institutions, to the financial system as a whole, and possibly to the economic and social order. Because of such fears, policymakers in many countriesdeveloped and less developed, democratic and autocraticrespond by protecting bank creditors from all or some of the losses they otherwise would face. Failing banks are labeled "too big to fail" (or TBTF). This important new book examines the issues surrounding TBTF, explaining why it is a problem and discussing ways of dealing with it more effectively.
Gary H. Stern and Ron J. Feldman, officers with the Federal Reserve, warn that not enough has been done to reduce creditors' expectations of TBTF protection. Many of the existing pledges and policies meant to convince creditors that they will bear market losses when large banks fail are not credible, resulting in significant net costs to the economy. The authors recommend that policymakers enact a series of reforms to reduce expectations of bailouts when large banks fail.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Analysis.......2006-05-14
As a 35 year banker (and loan officer) I have seen and survived the dark days of 1985-1992 when the banking industry was on the edge.
Penn Square as the harbringer of disaster and the impact on the industry was a rude awakening.
Thus, the spectre of TBTF; particularly as more banks continue to grow and we now have trillion dollar financial institutions.
This book covers TBTF with outstanding analysis. In fact, it should be required reading for government, regulators, and bankers (certainly senior management and boards),
An awesome book.
Book Description
"You just spent $100,000 on a college degree to make photocopies. And your manager probably isn't even happy with them.
Life at the entry level isn't about what school you graduated from, or even who you know. It's actually about paying dues and brownnosing and keeping your foot out of your mouth during meetings.
You're Too Smart For This explains everything your college professors didn't:
Understand how college has no application to reality, or anybody living in it.
Come to terms with doing gruntwork and smiling while being yelled at.
Manage your manager, and watch him take credit for your work.
Get straight with operating on a team-putting personal interests second, for once.
Negotiate office politics, and recognize when to keep quiet (e.g., ""the daytime"").
Earn the right promotion or transfer, instead of quitting and being poor again.
The bigger picture, really, is finding a career that you're passionate about-even if it doesn't come with a sexy business card. You won't have time to spend the money, anyway.
But no worries. You're Too Smart For This will help you get the hang of the working life soon enough. And even have some fun with it. Especially at happy hour.
"
Customer Reviews:
Very easy read. Enjoyable, informative and straight-to-the-point........2006-11-25
Hi! I'm a 25 year old "career freshman" as Ball likes to put it. I first picked up this book after my first corporate contract job ended to figure out what went wrong and why they had to let me go.
The book's layout reminds me of "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff", with 2-3 pages dedicated to each "lie". Each topic has interesting side notes and captions and is really written to an audience that's straight out of college, comparing subjects like the hiring process and HR recruiters to dating and one-night stands. Ball breaks down each topic in simple english and at times it seems more like an older frat brother is giving you advice rather than a career counselor. I actually enjoyed reading this book and was able to get through the whole thing in about a week.
The only downsides I have about this book are that his punchlines become somewhat predictable as you progress through the book and that the online resources seem more like a place to hype up Michael Ball's achievements than as a place to learn and share about getting through your first job. It would also help if there was an interactive online forum, like other books catered to twentysomethings (e.g. Suze Orman's YF&B).
Still, I highly recommend this book to all of you out there who are still lost and confused in the corporate world. Good luck to you all!
Blunt & Funny.......2006-05-12
You're Too Smart for This is a fast, fun, and refreshingly honest take on what it takes to really survive and thrive as a new corporate "grunt." I was actually a little surprised at how far the author takes some of the humor...but I found myself laughing and nodding in agreement the whole time!
After 4 or 5 years of dry, slow college textbooks, this is the crash course you've been waiting for. You'll be able to use your new knowledge tommorow--and have a much stronger understanding of what's going on around you. Because, as Michael Ball points out, you've only got 90 days now to prove you were worth hiring...
Right On Time!.......2006-05-11
It's funny how things come to you just when you need them... After joining a mid-sized Internet company straight out of school, I found myself doing OK with my actual work, but making a lot of interpersonal mistakes I didn't see coming. For instance, after my manager denied a project request--one that I really wanted--I decided to go talk to some other people about getting on the team. In school, this always worked for me.
But in the office, I painfully found out, this is a huge mistake! And just one of many that Michael Ball expertly--and very entertainingly--illustrates and cautions against. What I appreciated most about You're Too Smart for This was that the author is "on the level" with you--he doesn't pull any punches, and talks to you like a big brother might. One you actually like, that is ;)
The structure of the book--the "lies"--make it an easy and fun read the first time around, but also ensure that you can quickly pick it back up later on as a reference guide for whatever situation you're in (e.g., promotions, quitting, etc.).
Do yourself a big favor and check out this book--even if you think you already know the rules. I can practically guarantee you'll learn some valuable new insights. Plus have a great laugh while you're at it!
Quotes Alone are Worth It!.......2006-05-11
You're Too Smart for This, to me, encapsulated exactly what I'm experiencing as a relatively new accountant at Ernst & Young. All of the day-to-day BS I found myself struggling with, Michael Ball shines a light on, and really talks you through.
But I have to admit, one of my favorite parts of this book is all of the quotes and sidebars! There's got to be well over 200--from everyone from Aristotle to Peter Drucker to Bill Gates to Jeff Gordon to Sharon Stone. Plus the author gives his own little sarcastic twist in the attribution, which I found to be a great addition.
The callout boxes, in fact, are full of really solid research--pulled from sources such as the US Census Bureau, Harvard Business Review, New York Times, Fast Company, Monster.com, and countless others.
The book, in total, is really a compendium of all the entry level wisdom that's out there. And then some. If you've just stepped into Corporate America, don't take another step without this book!
Ball Breaks it Down.......2006-05-11
What I found most valuable in this book--besides the sheer entertainment value--was how the author takes what are typically confusing and hush-hush topics (e.g., managing your manager, dealing with difficult coworkers, getting a good promotion, finding a work/life balance), and gets at the root of the issue.
It's not a prescriptive as some other books, maybe; there's no "Step 1, Step 2" stuff in there. But what Michael Ball does is give you the principles behind all the big issues... Sort of the tool box, and then you go build it however it works for you.
If you're looking for the truth behind the curtain, this is definitely your book.

"There they were, without a word to say to each other.".......2005-06-11
Dorothy Rothschild Parker's malicious wit, mordant humor, and cynicism are brilliantly revealed in this audiotape narrated by Elaine Strich. With a gravelly voice appropriate for the wearied New York lives she portrays, Strich imbues "Big Blonde" and a host of other stories with attitudes of the late 1920s through the early 1940s, showing the arrogance of men in relation to women, the voluntary subservience of the women, and the shallow goals of socially conscious people whose primary concern is recognition by each other.
"Big Blonde," her most famous story, describes how Mrs. Morse, a large blonde woman, finds happiness in her recent marriage and homemaking, only to find her husband becoming less interested in her as she becomes more domestic and less "exciting." Mrs. Morse's downward spiral into drink and an eventual suicide attempt parallel Parker's own life. "Too Bad" tells of the Weldons, an upscale couple who seem to have a perfect marriage, except that they can no longer find anything to say to each other, largely because the wife has become a bore. "Song of the Shirt" tells of a wealthy woman of "great heart," who volunteers to sew hospital robes for wounded soldiers but is unable to help the unemployed mother of a polio-stricken child.
"Mr. Durant" continues the emphasis on the arrogance of men, as the title character has an affair with a naïve employee who becomes pregnant and loses her desirability. "Diary of a New York Lady" details the shallow social activities, the theatre going, and the repetitive parties of a woman with too little to do. The funniest, most tongue-in-cheek story, "The Garter," tells of a character named Dorothy Parker who is stranded on the couch at a major party because her garter has broken and she can't get up without losing her stocking.
Parker adds much ironic humor to these stories of failure. She is cruelly critical of women who let men determine their destinies, mocking both their pretensions and their lack of imagination, but she also recognizes that they have little choice and few opportunities to escape their lot. Equally critical of men, she finds their interest in women selfish and often limited to the bedroom. Sardonic, ironic, and cruelly observant, Parker creates tragedies masquerading as social comedies and comedies of almost unbearable pathos. Mary Whipple
Revealed the good old days weren't so good........1999-05-06
I often think we spend so much of our time wishing we lived in a kindler, gentler time -- a time past when things were simpler. Dorothy Parker's stories made me realize that life is life and it ain't easy, no matter what the year. The reader's smoky voice is perfect for the collection. As she told each tale, I felt as if she were reaching right into my chest and clenching my heart in her brightly-manicured grip. The stories are revealing. I found myself haunted by "Mr. Durant" days afterward. I can say that I came away from this collection changed in some way. How, precisely, I cannot say. It is too soon to tell, since I just finished the last story yesterday. I do recommend them, however, if only to show readers of this day how very different life in Dorothy Parker's day.

Good Book for Teaching French to Young Children.......2000-05-20
Generally a good way to teach very young children French, although I'm not really crazy about the storyline. In the story, each animal is unhappy with its various attributes and wants other ones, i.e. my nose is too long, I want a shorter one, etc - not exactly the kind of message I'd want my toddler to absorb.
Having said that, the illustrations are wonderful and the quality of the hardback book ............. is just great.
Although there is a glossary and pronunciation guide, I would not recommend this book to a parent who does not have a rudimentary knowledge of French.
A great book to teach some basic Spanish vocabulary.......1999-05-16
As a Spanish teacher in an elementary school, I use this book to help teach describing words. The children love how the elephant and giraffe make silly changes to their appearance; it holds their interest in the story and helps them learn the material. At the end of the story they clearly recognize the lesson: you don't need to change who you are because friends like you just the way you are!
