Top 5 Reasons to Buy The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being a Bitch)

1. You just got promoted.
Yikes! Nobody ever taught you to be a manager. Your role models have been less than fabulous and you want to be better. We teach you how to be more mentor than manager. We show you how to be firm but fair. Armed with our book, you will learn how to get the best out of your employees.

2. Most management books put you to sleep.
No jargon and no need for an MBA. The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss Without Being a Bitch is a fun read that offers information without intimidation and includes all the advice you need to learn to lead, inspire and motivate. We include quizzes, tips, checklists and fun sidebars such as "Celluloid Bitches," and "The Girl's Guide to Gossip" throughout.

3. Your manager is crazy.
You're not alone. In our "Good Witch/Big Bitch" boxes we share both the horrible and the heroic--stories from women from around the country who have seen it all and learned their lessons.

4. You're not a manager…yet!
Unlike most management books we speak to both leaders and the led. We offer tips and suggestions for dealing with issues such as micromanagement, taking credit for ideas, managing up to get the promotion, office politics and taking responsibility for mistakes.

5. Don't take just our word for it....
Good management is a life-long pursuit. We'd be foolish to believe we know it all, so to help us fill in the blanks we got on the phone with women from all over the country. We include interviews with coaches, human resource directors, other writers, supervisors, the supervised, mediators, and social workers to get their take on the challenges and opportunities of being the chick-in-charge.

Book Description

So, you finally got that promotion. You’re the boss now. The supervisor. The manager. The captain. The taskmaster. Those days of taking orders, running errands, and clock-watching are over. As exciting as all this might seem, once the rush of the promotion is over, you might be scratching your head wondering exactly what to do. Being the boss is never easy, but it's twice as hard for a woman. It seems like there's no middle ground. Either you're the dragon lady who rules with an iron fist or the mousey girl who gets drowned out at every meeting. When a woman wields authority and dares to make tough decisions, how often is the "B-word" bandied about by her employees? How can she strike that balance between pushover and dictator?

Fear not. You can do the job. All you need is a little helpful advice to send you on your way. Whether you supervise two as a shift manager or lord over an entire corporate empire, Caitlin Friedman and Kim Yorio will show you how to step gracefully into your new position of power. They’ll teach you how to motivate your team without alienating them, how to delegate without feeling guilty, how to deal with office politics and how to handle evaluations, promotions, and even firings. And for those of you who are already running the show, they can help you become the mentor your employees deserve.

Inside, there are self-assessment questionnaires to help you find out where you land on the bitch or wimp scale; interviews with prominent female bosses, human-resources directors, and therapists; and advice from a whole host of experts. In addition, there are funny and informative checklists and tips to make sure you’re the Good Witch around the office and not the Big Bitch. And, most important, Caitlin and Kim will teach you the secrets to owning your role and loving it. You’ve earned your promotion, so enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars A life-saver!.......2007-10-04

Several months ago I found myself a newly promoted manager overseeing several of my former peers. Though thrilled at the promotion, I had no idea how difficult the transition would be. I stumbled upon The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being a [...]), and it was like reading the handbook on how to navigate through my exact situation. From employee evaluations to office politics, it covers every aspect of the very delicate (and often sticky) manager-employee relationship. Coupled with its light and pleasant tone, this book was an absolute life-saver for me. It helped me get perspective and see the humor in most (if not all) situations. Definitely a must-have for every girl trying to find her way through the labyrinth that is the business world.

There is still, today, a public distaste for ambitious women: ambitious men are "go-getters"; ambitious women (esp. bosses) are "bitches". The Girl's Guide is loaded with practical advice and stories from the trenches reassuring accomplished women who love their work with a grand passion that they are not lone chimeras (a.k.a. "bitches"); that they can inspire, motivate, and lead--including making hard choices--with integrity, elegance, and grace, all the while keeping their eye on profitability and simultaneously treating others with decency and respect. 5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Benchmarks.......2000-03-14

For those organizations which seek to establish and then sustain programs which optimize the talents of the women whom they employ, this is an immensely informative book. Of even greater value than the information provided are the specific suggestions it offers based on three decades of research on all manner of companies. Catalyst is a non-profit organization which "partners with U.S. corporations and professional firms that understand the critical power of women at work, that know that women's advancement is not a feel-good or even a do-good issue but a bottom-line practicality."

The Catalyst Award is given to those corporations which have achieved lasting, measurable results in this area. The book examines many of these corporations. For example: IBM, Avon Products, E.I. du Pont de Nemours, Eastman Kodak, Arthur Andersen, Motorola, American Airlines, Morrison & Foerster, McDonald's, J.C. Penney, Dow Chemical, Knight-Ridder, Texas Instruments, and Allstate. I hasten to point out that most (if not all) of the information and suggestions provided by the book are also relevant to small-to-midsize organizations and may indeed be of even greater value to them than to (let's say) "Fortune 100" companies.

Advancing Women in Business is divided as follows:

Part I. Changing the System

Part II. Best Practices

Part III. Resources: The Catalyst Award

"The Catalyst Approach" can maximize the value of a workforce by "capitalizing on the talents of women" only if all efforts are made within an "inclusive, problem-solving, comprehensive program." Specifically, first establish a strong foundation by connecting each initiative explicitly to a business rationale; next, build a fact base by gathering information that will create the baselines for evaluating each initiative's progress; finally, develop, pilot, and implement action plans whose initiatives achieve practical solutions tailored to the organization's environment. How? Several dozen corporations are examined which illustrate what the "Catalyst Approach" requires of those involved in its implementation. Specific strategies and tactics are discussed. Results are measured and evaluated. I rate this book so highly because I think it is very well written, because it provides a wealth of important information about "best practices from the corporate leaders", and because it includes a number of practical suggestions as to HOW to derive greatest benefit from that information. By now, frankly, I had hoped that a gender-specific book such as this would be unnecessary in the year 2000. Well, unfortunately, it is. I now hope that enough people buy it and enough organizations are guided by it so that one day very soon, my granddaughters read it and then ask me "What's this all about? Was it really like that? That's ridiculous!" Yes it is.

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING TOUR DE FORCE OF BEST PRACTICES........1999-04-23

The book begins with a three phase approach for advancing women that is basic to all successful initiatives. It explores some of the best practices of corporations to provide advice on women's advancement issues. It also briefly highlights the programs of numerous Catalyst award winners. The book is based on Catalyst's research reports, case histories, and best practices. This is an interesting tour de force of best practices. 3 out of 5 stars Too Much Work For Me. .......2007-07-08

Littman obviously did a lot of research to help women sort through all the issues involved in starting a business. I quickly realized that it was more than I wanted to deal with. I didn't want to come up with investment cash, find overhead, or take procurement issues into account. It just seemed like too much work, to find work, for me. But, some of us are looking for any way out of the traditional workplace, especially if we're raising a family, and want to set our own hours around a family schedule. Thank God for the Internet. Women can now reach across the globe, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, making it possible to sell used products, without all the collateral issues typical of starting a business. I sell used books on Amazon. I started with $100.00, no overhead, and no risk, just a desperate desire to set my own schedule. I ended up making more money than I ever expected, in less time than it would have taken to work through all the issues Littman so painstakingly covered in this book. If you want to start a business that demands consideration of collateral issues, I think this book will help in those efforts. If it sounds like too much work, you might find something to sell online--the biggest bazaar in the world. I've made more money, part-time, selling books, than I made working 8-5. So, just another alternative for all you working women reading this book--if you're not into books, find something you do enjoy, and reach across the globe, from your home den to sell it online.

This book tells how to confront the harasser. If the harassment continues, the legal steps are covered. For an employer, it provides information on policies, complaint procedures, training sessions and monitoring to prevent harassment.
NOLO Press is noted for making legal information accessible to ordinary people. This topic is something that every supervisor and employer needs to be briefed on.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2003-01-28

I found the book to be pretty straightforward and easy to read. It gives all the pertinent information on the subject from the law to how to stop sexual harassment to your legal remedies. One of the best features is that provides an array of case studies that clear up a lot of the gray areas. I used the book to help me develop a training on the subject, I recommend it to anyone who needs more info on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource.......2001-07-08

As an employment attorney and human resource consultant who trains organizations on harassment policy, I use this book as a great reference material. I often suggest it to supervisors who want to know more about how to deal with this complex and difficult problem....

5 out of 5 stars The Skinny on Sexual Harassment for Employers.......2000-11-28

Every business with employees that does not have a sexual harassment policy in place needs to buy this book now.

Actions the authors say employers need to implement regarding sexual harassment include: Do whatever it takes to understand the law, the issues, and keep current; put in place a zero tolerance sexual harassment prevention policy that prohibits specific behaviors of verbal harassment, non-verbal tactics, and physical harassment; take action to stop sexual harassment that does occur and prevent reoccurrence and reprisals.

          Book Description

Born in 1982, the Millennial Generation is no longer made-up of just kids and teens . the eldest are now graduating college and entering the professional work force en masse! This means YOU need to know how to effectively recruit, manage and motivate them. Most GenX and Boomer bosses have no clue who these young adults really are or what makes them tick, so they find this book to be extremely valuable!

Much was written about Millennials back when they were young kids and teenagers, but The 2007 Chickonomics TM Guide to Millennial Professionals is the premier book about who they are NOW as 20-somethings.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information for Baby Boomers on Millennials.......2007-09-25

As the Director of Operations for a Silicon Valley company from the Boomer generation, understanding the Millennials can be a challenge! The book is a great resource with helpful tips on communicating effectively with the youngest crop of professionals. Short and filled with valuable to-the-point information.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for Understanding the New Generation!.......2007-09-25

This is a great book to help understand the new generation, what makes them tick and how to manage them. This is the kind of information that a VP of Human Resources would love and I've already recommended this to several HR executives to help them with current recruitment efforts!

          5 out of 5 stars Long awaited.......2007-09-25

I've been waiting for this book...
I had the benefit of early business advice at the onset of my company (from the author's ad company. Smart people, great info, I highly recommend anything that Orrell has to say about business.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - easy to read!.......2007-09-24

Just when I think I understand the new generation, a book like this comes out and proves me wrong. Good reading for anyone involved with HR, any Managers over 30, and/or anyone who owns their own business and needs to hire the new young professionals. This book has practical advice that will change the way I do everything from hiring to incentive programs. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Quick Read, Good Info on Generation Y Hiring.......2007-09-24

I review and promote a lot of business books on my community website for business professionals. I have not found one current book that discusses who the Millennials (Generation Y) are and how to best deal with these 20-somethings now entering the professional workforce. This is a very hot topic and something that has companies throughout the country concerned and baffled. Lisa's book is a personable quick-read packed with good info that any HR exec or Boomer/GenX manager will benefit from.
