Book Description
This volume provides an innovative and detailed overview of the book publishing industry, including details about the business processes in editorial, marketing, and production. The work explores the complex issues that occur everyday in the publishing industry and covers the changing technologies and business practices. In this second edition, author Albert N. Greco thoroughly updates his original text, providing statistical datasets though 2002 and in many cases offering projections through 2007.
With consumer books (adult, juvenile, and mass market paperbacks) at the central focus of the book, the author also reviews all major book categories to present a comprehensive overview of this diverse business. In addition to the insights and portrayals of the publishing industry, this edition includes a new appendix containing rarely seen historical data on the industry from 1946 to the end of the 20th century. The selective bibliography includes the latest literature, including works in marketing and economics that has a direct relationship with this dynamic industry.
This volume offers invaluable insights for graduate and undergraduate courses exploring the book publishing industry, and it is a unique and vital resource for anyone studying or interested in the industry.
Customer Reviews:
horrible writing.......2006-01-20
The good thing about the book is its abundant information (more than you need, actually). However, the writing is horrible! I can't imagine how a person--a college professor in this case--can come up with such a poor job despite a very clear-cut framework. Redundant and illogical paragraphs are no surprise in this book. The first edition is bad, but believe me, the second one is even worse! Also, be fully prepared for loads of typographical errors and the mix-up of figures.
THE BUSINESS SIDE OF PUBLISHING.......2000-01-04
I am a college writing teacher and The Book Publishing Industry is used as a textbook in my classes. It's somewhat like a book for business school, and can be factual to an extreme, but it gives an excellent view of the financial underpinnings of this huge industry.
Book Description
Sylvia Beach was intimately acquainted with the expatriate and visiting writers of the Lost Generation, a label that she never accepted. Like moths of great promise, they were drawn to her well-lighted bookstore and warm hearth on the Left Bank. Shakespeare and Company evokes the zeitgeist of an era through its revealing glimpses of James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Sherwood Anderson, Andre Gide, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, D. H. Lawrence, and others already famous or soon to be.
In his introduction to this new edition, James Laughlin recalls his friendship with Sylvia Beach. Like her bookstore, his publishing house, New Directions, is considered a cultural touchstone.
Customer Reviews:
Shakespeare would be proud.......2005-04-11
What a wonderful find! This book is truly a treasure and made me wish I had been an author in Paris during the 20's. Sylvia Beach ran her library Shakespeare and Company on the left bank on Rue l'Odeon for many years and served as the location for English language books in Paris. During that time she worked closely with Joyce and personally handled not only publishing Ulysses but also took care of all his mail and the shipping of his books to various customers around the world.
There is a rather funny scene she describes. Because it was so hard to get Ulysses into America (since it was banned), Sylvia had a dilemma concerning distribution. Hemingway, who proclaims himself Sylvia's "best customer", tells her not to worry and within a few days he comes back to let her know he has a friend who has moved to Canada who will personally bring the books into America by ferry, stuffed in his pants.
I cannot say enough what a beautiful book this is. Beach is as gifted as the authors she esteemed and brings to life a world you wish you could climb into.
I would also highly recommend A Moveable Feast by Earnest Hemingway in conjunction to this.
A Pleasant, Chatty Memoir.......2004-12-31
I've been carrying a first edition of this book around from state to state for several years, and never really quite got around to reading it, as I was more involved with books by the writers Beach writes about, and with the more mundane details of life. What a shame. This is a thoroughly enjoyable and chatty memoir of one rather significant (but don't overstate this) expatriate member of the so-called "Lost Generation". The book is an easy read -- certainly no literary masterpiece, though I doubt it was intended as one. Beach recounts her efforts a running a little book store specializing in modern American literature (and, of course, publishing a small work by an Irish writer, as well), and details her encounters with various figures of the era, be they French, English or American. At times, particularly early on, Beach resorts to simple name dropping -- one day so-and-so came in, this person was a regular customer, etc.; but that is really just a quibble as the sheer volume of significant names brings to mind a roll call of the major modern literary figures of the English language. And "Shakespeare & Co." also has a nice little side effect -- it reminded me of some writers (and a composer - Georges Antheil) that I haven't read yet, or haven't read in a while. I highly recommend this book.
not quite what I expected.......2004-10-05
good, though not quite what I expected, September 12, 2004
I purchased this book knowing little about Sylvia Beach and her bookstore Shakespeare and Company, but hoping to find out more. Since this particular book is rather autobiographical, I figured I could learn a lot from it about her. Actually it was more about her famous friends (Joyce, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and many other writers and other prominent social and literary figures of the day; if you're familiar with the Algonquin Round Table and their expanded circle of friends, a lot of these people cross over), with only rather modest information provided about herself. It is still an interesting read, and the stories she recounts are well done and witty, but the spotlight is less on her own story and more on the people she surrounded herself with. I would like to seek out a more objective biography of her to couple to the information I've learned in this book. Still, do read it, especially if you are interested in the literati of the 1920s-30s.
A real treat for book lovers........2004-09-13
Every once in a great while I stumble upon a book I've never heard of and feel as though I've discovered treasure. This is such a book. Though I had heard of Sylvia Beach and her famous book shop/lending library, her memoir "Shakespeare & Company" was unknown to me. In an easy, conversational style, Beach gives the history of her shop and observational portraits of the various artists who treated her establishment as a salon of sorts. These artists included Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, T. S. Eliot and Andre Gide, among others. She expounds upon her experiences as James Joyce's publisher and benefactress to a considerable depth, while never overtly acknowledging the intimate nature of her relationship with Adrienne Monnier. Beach's life in Paris and her interactions with 'the lost generation,' was published almost fifty years ago, but remains engaging, enjoyable and relevant today. Indeed a treat.

This is a do-it-yourself text on how to write, publish and promote your book by a gifted fiction writer. While Chevy Alden has also written nonfiction he has a fiction author's perspective; rare in how-to-publish books.
Alden takes you though every step of writing, typesetting, printing and promoting. He tells you how to set up your publishing company, discusses financing your company and reveals some interesting legal considerations.
Also see his unique book: How to Write, Publish & Sell your own Aviation Books.
As a publisher, author of 28 Books, 109 revised editions, six translations and over 500 magazine articles as well as a consultant to the book publishing industry, I spend much of my time doing research. I will refer to this book again and again.

Customer Reviews:
A little less than I had hoped it would be........2006-02-23
I have purchased a number of desktop publishing books and would have to say when compared to others this is extremely dated. By that I mean many of the examples are no longer relevant... that is unless you and your customers still use floppy disks, VHS, and a roladex on a daily basis! Not too cutting edge. However, it was not a total loss of $$$. There are many ideas that are useful and while a few of the others are outdated, they may still trigger some ideas to transition to applications for modern times. I feel if you get one good idea from a book, it may be worth the price of admission.
The Desktop Publisher's Idea Book, Second Edition.......2004-04-23
This is an incredible book. Chuck Green shows us how he produces clean, professional, fresh, striking ideas for a large variety of design applications and he tells us how he produces them. His instructions, like his designs, are well laid out and very clear. Novice designers can now produce very professional and effective design by following his advice and examples. Experienced designers will find a wealth of information.
I have gone to Chuck's web site Ideabook.com for years to get ideas and reference. I was always amazed how Chuck could have so much information and by the use of layout, colour and graphics make the site inviting, fun and yet not cluttered. His book follows his web site design in that he shows both great design and how to instructions in a very appealing and easy to follow way. Chuck's ability to simplify the complex is unique and to me very valuable. Tremendous value, a must have reference book.
Not what I expected..........2002-02-08
As a graphic artist, this book was a book about templates, and personally I have created and seen much better work than was featured here. This is the last book I buy from Mr. Green.
A Must Have!.......2001-08-29
I just received the "Desktop Publishing Idea Book" and I am in love. One of the sections I enjoyed is the Resource section in the back in respect to Project Materials. I would love to see a section on the ideabook.com web site relative to these type resources. I spent about three hours on the ideabook.com web
site this morning. What a wonderful source of information in addition to this valuable book, and the site's structure and navigation is commendable.
Having been developing web sites myself for over five years, I am slowly making my way into DP because my clients think that because I am a professional web developer and graphic designer, I should be able to whip up a business card or brochure for them. The concept isn't hard for me. I have been artistic and a natural brainstormer all my life and enjoy dabbling with new software. The problem is taking the time out to branch into
another area and going through that uncomfortable learning curve. Chuck's book is a wonderful tool to set my brain in motion and it has done just that. Having only browsed through a few chapters and jumping from section to section, I already have pages of notes and ideas to help promote my existing dot com businesses. This morning I also ordered Chuck's newest "Logo" book too and anticipate the wealth of information it likely contains. Thank you, Chuck Green, for the inspirations
and nudge forward into DP. It undoubtedly will take some of that uncomfortable learning curve away.
One Great Resource -- Many Great Applications.......2001-07-03
Although the Idea Book includes many projects designed with easy to follow templates in mind, probably the best thing about this book is that it's NOT just another book of templates.
I found many projects in the book to be unique and effective revenue generators and promotional tools that I may never have otherwise created.
I personally used his "WebCard" idea (page 321) on my own website, and response to this one simple little graphic application has been phenomenal.
The "Book Jacket Index" (page 44) is now something I use on all my frequently referenced books -- highlighted passages can only be seen when you remember which page they're on, and I'm tired of all the little Post-Its poking out of my books -- they get bent, moved, and eventually dry-up and fall out. The jacket index eliminates these problems.
The "Info Book" and "Take A Test Brochure" are two more examples of great items to suggest design clients use as marketing tools.
And don't forget Chuck Green's website, ideabook.com -- it's Chuck-full (I mean Chock-full) of additional information for using design, clipart, and fonts effectively. A great resource for any creative professional.
The only improvements I would recommend for the next edition of this book are the use of color photographs and the inclusion of a template-filled CD-ROM, or a companion webpage where the templates could be downloaded.

Book Description
When initially published in 1987, the first edition of this book became an indispensable summary of librarianship and publishing around the world. It received much acclaim and was included in the tenth edition of Euguene Sheehy's Guide to Reference Books. Much has changed in the world of books, and this revised edition provides current and comprehensive coverage of the present state of libraries and publishing in the United States and abroad. While sections of the first edition have been updated, this revision also includes material on additional topics. The second edition offers almost 1,000 entries compared to the 644 entries of the first edition. The heart of the volume is an alphabetical listing of countries from around the world. Each entry provides valuable data about the political and economic condition of the country, illiteracy rate, and ratio of library holdings to inhabitants. More specific information is then provided about the number of libraries and their holdings, the number of publishers, and the number of books and newspapers published per year. Libraries of special note are indicated. The rest of the volume contains fascinating information on quotations about books and librarians, biographical sketches of book people, and representations of book-related topics in creative works. This new edition also provides a guide to Latin terms used in the book world, information on job search strategies for librarians, library awards and grants, and helpful advice for librarians and supervisors.
