5 out of 5 stars Three in one all time classics.......2007-10-10

Many of us grew up on Tintin and love them for their great nostalgia value, and reminisces of childhood, as well as the brave values of a simpler, more clarified world of yesteryear.
This volume brings together three of the best loved Tintin classics in one handy volume- and for not much more than the price of one.
They are:
Tintin in America
1931 , and gangsters rule the streets of Chicago. It is up to intrepid European journalist Tintin and his dog Snowy to tackle Al Capone , Mr Smiles and other gangsters, taking him from Chicago to the Wild West where he dodges Indians and Cowboys , and back again.

Cigars of the Pharoah

First published in Le Petit Vingtième between 8/12 1932 and 8/2 1934. The book appeared in 1934 . Redrawn in 1955. It was first published in English in 1971.

A colourful and detailed adventure , Tintin and his dog Snowy meet up with an eccentric Egyptologist on a cruise , taking Tintin on a danger-filled adventure from Egypt to Arabia to India , in a hunt for whoever is behind the mystery of the Cigars of the Pharaoh , he is framed for heroin possesion , caught up in an Arabian war and sentenced to be executed , lost in the desert , locked up in a mental assylum in India , before being led to an international ring of drug trafficers. It is amazing the amount of detail Herge worked into these adventure comics.

Many of us grew up on them and love them for the nostalgia value.
I loved the animation in the underground Pharaoh's tomb.
Written in 1936 , The Blue Lotus is the sequel to the colourful Cigars of the Pharaoh. In the Cigars of the Pharaoh , Tintin has almost succeeded in smashing an international gang of drug traffickers , managing to capture all of them except the leader who mysteriously crashes over a ravine.
His further investigations lead him to China , then under threat from Japanese agression.
Tintin comes up against a madman infected with a dart that sends the recipient insane , enraged British colonists out for revenge after having been humiliated by Tintin and the Japanese army , with the chief villain of the piece being Japanese businessman Mitsuhirato.
This album drew protest form the Japanese government of the time , and was praised by Chiang Kai Shek , President of the Republic of China.
However, it was banned by China's Communist regime until 1984 , due to some of their own insane Maoist reasoning-and even then was still chopped up and heavily edited.
Other albums having been banned by the Communist dictatorship in China where Tintin in Tibet (for recognizing Tibetan culture) , Tintin in the Land of the Soviets (for exposing Communism)and Tintin in the Congo ('Colonialist').

I am satisfied first-time buyer. my seller agreed to mail my books to an alternative address. Kept in touch with me and kept me informed until I provided the address. mailed the books on time, and i am happy, so is my 13 year old. Thanks again, those books are not available in Trinidad and Tobago, they are great for reading.

5 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage.......2006-09-09

Among my very early memories is as one of several children sitting on the sloped lawn between two of my neighbour's houses, each of us reading a different story - and so, in no particular order - from "Les Aventures de Tintin." This was my introduction to the most extraordinary comics world ever created, a part of my French-language heritage, though the series has been translated into many languages including English. My goal with these reviews (one for each volume) is to explain to an American audience why Tintin is such a phenomenon in the rest of the world.

I'll be skimpy as to plot details so as not to give any spoilers. I won't even give the gist of the adventures. For those who don't mind spoilers, further details are abundantly available in other reviews or by simply Googling "Tintin." Any value judgements I give are, of course, subjective.

Volume 1: Tintin in America (1932), The Cigars of the Pharaoh (1934), The Blue Lotus (1936). This is the first instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

The seven-volume series contains 21 of the 24 adventures, omitting the first two -Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo - and the last, incomplete one - Tintin and Alph-Art.

There is a leap forward from the Congo adventure with Tintin in America, further maturity with Cigars, and the series is in full bloom with The Blue Lotus. The first of the three is still amateurish and quite childish, but fun nonetheless; we see Chicago, Al Capone (the only appearance of a real-life character in the entire series, though Hergé does draw himself and some real-world people into the occasional panel, without giving them any identities), the plight of the Indians, and a ticker tape parade.

The Cigars of the Pharaoh introduces the recurring characters Rastapopoulos and the buffoonish Thom(p)son twins, gives us the first of the many mind-bending dream sequences in the series, and takes us to Egypt and to the India under the Raj (the story predates Indian independence) with a mystery that segues into the superb The Blue Lotus, which takes place in China under Japanese occupation. Already, after three adventures, children are enthralled by the exotic locations and adults are amazed by author Hergé's painstaking research and attention to detail.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners.......2006-04-13

I'm surprised at the rave reviews that everyone is giving this book. I have this book and I've been reading through it and it starts off fine as it has you build a simple application in the beginning. I found that promising because I've never used Lotus Notes before so I thought this would be an excellent book. The only problem is that once you're finished with that chapter, it goes from good to really bad. The book then becomes a reference manual for the different aspects of Lotus Notes. It provides no tutorials whatsoever as one astute reviewer on here points out. If I wanted this kind of reference I could have read the help documentation for Lotus Notes. This book is only useful for people who have mastered many aspects of Lotus Notes and even then its explanations of aspects like commands are dry and not put into context.

5 out of 5 stars Must Own Book for All Domino Developers.......2005-10-18

Before I go any further, I have to disclose up front that I personally and professionally know all three authors who contributed to Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible (Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver, 2003, John Wiley And Sons, 1032 Pages, ISBN 0764526111). And Rocky, Brian and Richard will all tell you that I would still be the first one to call it like I see it, regardless of relationships. So with that in mind, to every person who works with Lotus Notes and Domino, regardless of version, and to every person who has ever posted to the Lotus developerWorks forum asking about good reference material for development: buy this book and put it on your bookshelf. I may approach coding somewhat differently than the authors, but that is the nature of all application developers. But this book does something often overlooked in too many technical books: it not only talks about how things work in Notes/Domino, it also puts out best practices and explanations for these best practices based on the authors vast depth and breadth of experience.

Make no mistake about it, this book is a tome. You are not going to read it like a novel. You are going to pick and choose the pieces you need based on your experience levels and problems you are trying to solve. The publisher wisely categorizes this book as a "beginner to advanced" level, a point I think one early reviewer of this book missed. In a systematic format, the authors walk the reader from the very beginning of Lotus Notes as a product to the point where even the most advanced developers can benefit from the content.

Lotus Notes and Domino is all about design items and objects, stored as 'notes'. So the authors make no assumption of the reader's experience level. They start at the very beginning by laying the framework for a simple application. They then explain the notes storage model, which is often a hard concept for may people to grasp, especially outside auditors and non-Notes people. As a reader you are then given a detailed thorough explanation of the Notes//Domino integrated development environment, and then even more detail on each design element that makes up an application. For the advanced readers, there is detail coverage of data integration with Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI), Java and XML.

As I said earlier in this review, this book will be of value regardless of what version of Notes/Domino you are running because of the coverage of the underlying concepts surrounding development on this platform. Sure it will not help you with the introduction of DB2 as an optional back-end data store, but that is not fundamental to the platform (yet).

There is one, to me, glaring weakness in the book and I discussed this with Rocky. The book is huge and is packed full of great content. But the layout of the book by the publisher makes it hard for tips, notes, and new feature highlights to really jump out of the page and grab you. This is not the fault of the author's, but is something the publisher should look at down the road.

A Tip for Readers of this Book

This is a book that will get used a lot and as such, will fall out of the binding because of its size. The first thing I like to do with a book like this is beat the binding to the punch. I will remove the pages from the binding and put them in a three ring binder or binders. This will make it much easier to handle and give it a much longer shelf life.

Who Should Own and Read This Book?

This book should be on the desk of every Lotus Notes and Domino developer that cares about their work. It should also be in the possession of every internal and/or external auditor charged with auditing Lotus Notes and Domino applications, so that they understand what they are auditing.

    The Scorecard

Double Eagle on a long par 5 playing into the wind.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - A must have for Lotus Notes and Domino developers.......2005-09-02

By far and away the best (and almost the only) book around for Lotus Notes and Domino 6 application development. A lot of technical books (especially for Lotus Notes) seem to re-hash the same old stuff, often glossing over or completely ignoring complex topics. However this book has it all and it an absolute must for Lotus Notes and Domino developers.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners.......2004-08-13

As with any book, it's only useful if it has what you want. Like many of the Bible series, it is rated for "Beginning", but it is really for experienced techs to add Lotus Notes to their skill set. The book assumes that you are familiar with scripting languages. If you aren't, don't expect this book to help you much. There are no reference materials for any of the functions or commands, no syntax helps, and no tutorials for the programming at all. Yet most of the chapters rely on programming extensively.

When she is forced to leave Vietnam, a young girl brings a lotus seed with her to America in remembrance of her homeland. “Exquisite artwork fuses with a compelling narrative--a concise endnote places the story effectively within a historical context--to produce a moving and polished offering.”--Publishers Weekly

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2007-09-12

This has to be one of my favorite children's books and being a soon to be teacher I have read a lot of children's books. One of the reasons it's my favorite is that it touches a subject that is close to my heart, the Vietnamese culture. My mom came to America after the Vietnam war with my sister who was 5 and brother who was 1. I never knew how important the lotus seed could be, but growing up I enjoyed eating the fruit and peeling it off the seed. This book is truely one of a kind and as I read it I learned more about my mom's culutre and just how special it is.

This is one book that I'll keep for many, many years even when I retire from teaching.

    5 out of 5 stars Lotus seed.......2006-11-05

This book is great for encouraging students to ask questions and infer meaning! Try it out in the classroom!

5 out of 5 stars This book is awsome.......2006-06-21

The lotus seed is about someone's grandmother who gets a lotus seed to remember her emperor. It takes place in Vietnam. It has lots of information obout what they used to flee from the Vietnam war. I think Tatsuro Kiuchi did a good job with the illustrations. I think every one from 5-8 should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Symbol of a Lotus Seed.......2006-05-23

This book helps me remember more about Vietnam and why I appreciate my culture so much. The significant symbolism of the lotus seed is the culture Vietnam and what the woman endurance in her past. Ba picked out a lotus seed from the imperial garden because of its beautiful and fresh scent. The lotus seed has never left her side as she carries it with her through the tragedy times and moved to a new country after the Vietnam War. One of her grandchildren planted the lotus seed in the backyard and it grew into a beautiful lotus flower. The beauty of it reminds Ba of her country.

This is definitely one of the best children's book I have ever read. The images are beautifully drawn as they describe Vietnam and the story. The symbolism of the lotus seed reminds me of my culture and I should never forget it. I really like how the author added a Vietnamese poem at the back. A must read for all young and old!

3 out of 5 stars The Lotus Seed.......2006-05-23

This book is touching. The grandma passes on the lotus seed to her grandson. One day, she sees a lotus flower in her backyard and it made her remember her ruler.

1 out of 5 stars One Closed Mind.......2007-09-15

This book has nothing to do with Buddhism, it's intended as polemic against Buddhists and Buddhism. I could write a book about Christ and put words in his mouth to make him seem foolish but that would have nothing to do with what he taught!!

5 out of 5 stars Well thought out and thought provoking book.......2007-08-16

I loved the style of this book. Throughout the whole book, I got the sense that I was really there in the boat with Priya as she had the privilege to discuss her life between two great minds. I liked how Mr. Zacharias used her as an example for several reasons:

    1. Her position as a prostitute is considered a lowly occupation, no matter what class or cultural background a person comes from.

    2. When she contracted her illness, a incurable one at that, she lashed out at the people surrounding her because she was in pain and wanted to share it in a negative form. We, in one aspect or another, all do that.

    3. Her life was a downward spiral of pain and suffering. How can we not all identify with that in one aspect or another? We may not be prostitutes but our lives can somehow spin downward. We lose our jobs, homes, family, kids, property, etc.

    Priya was "us".

As she has this conversation with these two great men, Jesus and Buddha, she represents what each of us would like to do-ask God to explain the reason for this life.

The conversation between Jesus and Buddha is polite and courteous, thought provoking and full of respect for each other. Not at one time, did I belive that they were attacking each other. Mr. Zacharias did a fine job in expounding one what Buddha taught and contrasting them well.

Jesus would say, the cause of suffering is walking away from God. Buddha said the cause of suffering is personal desire. Jesus says, "I come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." Buddha would say "You must reach Nirvana, the exstinguishment of the self and there will be no more suffering." Which of these worldviews are correct with Priya standing in the middle of them? Read the book and judge for yourselves.

For me, I have learned that I cannot depend on myself for godhood. It's just so much more easier to put my life in the care of someone who can control everything. I don't have to walk this life alone. I trust Him implicitly to take care of things for me. I don't want to do it all nor do I have the desire to do it. I get tired, I get sad and depressed. I make mistakes and I'm not always on my best behavior. Thankfully, Jesus understands this and says to me, "Cast all your cares on me, because I care for you." Reader, it just feels so good to let Him handle it. My life is not mine but His and I'd rather have it that way. (Got carried away here but I hope someone understands what I'm saying.)

    4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-08-03

This was a solid book. I think Ravi does a good job of trying to capture the Mind of Christ. It's an interesting book. I recommend it.

    1 out of 5 stars A misleading book.......2007-05-22

It does not surprise me that Ravi Zacharias' "The Lotus and the Cross" misleads the reader into a rather sophomoric account of Buddhism, as Christian authors have their mind made up already as to what their "competition" is - this goes hand in the hand with the parochialism of there being only "one way to Salvation." Could we expect more from Zacharias? Certainly this is not a work that draws together the similarities between the human need to connection with the Divine, irregardless of the form it takes.
I believe the similarities between what Christ and Buddha ACTUALLY experienced and expressed are far more profound than those card-carrying followers of particular faiths are willing to admit. Are we not all human, after all, which is to say, borne from the Divine?

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Competent Contrast from a Decidedly Christian Point of View.......2007-05-08

Christianity is exclusive in one sense and Christianity is not exclusive in another. Jesus himself proclaimed himself God and the only way to God (John 1:1, 14:6, 8:24-36) but Jesus also invites all to come (i.e. John 3:16). Yes, Jesus said that you cannot share Jesus with other gods or things. Jesus must be your heart's sole desire. But if you have the desire to come to Christ, you can indeed come.

Buddhist sympathizers reviewing this book have an imbalanced amount of vitriol towards Ravi and this excellent book, and are doing so through the lens of their own ignorance. Worse here is the amazing arrogance they assert by claiming that they know better what Jesus would say than an learned and established Christian such as Ravi. It's one thing to accuse Ravi of mischaracterizing Buddha, but it's completely absurd to assert that they would know better about what Jesus would say.

Now it is true that Ravi takes a fairly current event and uses it as an occasion to put forth a reasonable conversation between Jesus and Gautama (Buddha), and his conversation has the fictional Gautama on the defense. But seriously, what do you expect from someone who has a concrete worldview whose religion is every bit about educating those of other religions that Christianity really is all about proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the supreme God, and that warning that Jesus really is the only path to God?

And why is bias all that shocking for so many? We all have it. No matter how hard we try to pull oursevles above it or to toss it aside so that others will hear us, we cannot shake it. The real questions that one needs to ask are this: Is the author being reasonable and is the author right?

Personally, I found this book to be insightful, even-handed and well written. Ravi strikes hard at several Buddhist inconsistencies and illogical fallices, but yet keeps the conversation above the fray without resorting to "name calling" or ad homs that degrade this conversation into rhetorical irrelevance. The tone is simple, conversational and polite, and is nothing like what other reviewers here have inferred

I am amazed at the reaction of several reviewers here (who are being intolerant and exclusive in their own right) who clearly do not have a clue what true Christianity entails. And should these critics truly be Buddhists, then they do little more than give their religion a black eye.

How did the universe come into being? What is the meaning of human life against the blackness of infinity? Religion and science have many answers to these and like questions, answers that sometimes meet but more often diverge.

In this book-length conversation, French Buddhist monk Ricard and Vietnamese-born astrophysicist Trinh explore how Buddhism and modern science address life's big questions. Among the matters they touch on, sometimes fleetingly and sometimes in depth, are the illusory nature of phenomena, the guiding intelligence of nature, and the search for the mechanisms that drive planets and humans alike. Both authors, each conversant in the other's medium, argue against reductionist views of nature. And both provide plenty of data that support Albert Einstein's declaration that "if there is any religion that could correspond to the needs of modern science, it would be Buddhism."

Hard-nosed skeptics will perhaps find Ricard and Trinh's reconciliation arguable. Still, the record of their conversation makes fascinating reading and provides a useful overview of scientific reasoning and spiritual inquiry. --Gregory McNamee

    Book Description

Matthieu Ricard trained as a molecular biologist, working in the lab of a Nobel prize—winning scientist, but when he read some Buddhist philosophy, he became drawn to Buddhism. Eventually he left his life in science to study with Tibetan teachers, and he is now a Buddhist monk and translator for the Dalai Lama, living in the Shechen monastery near Kathmandu in Nepal. Trinh Thuan was born into a Buddhist family in Vietnam but became intrigued by the explosion of discoveries in astronomy during the 1960s. He made his way to the prestigious California Institute of Technology to study with some of the biggest names in the field and is now an acclaimed astrophysicist and specialist on how the galaxies formed.

When Matthieu Ricard and Trinh Thuan met at an academic conference in the summer of 1997, they began discussing the many remarkable connections between the teachings of Buddhism and the findings of recent science. That conversation grew into an astonishing correspondence exploring a series of fascinating questions. Did the universe have a beginning? Or is our universe one in a series of infinite universes with no end and no beginning? Is the concept of a beginning of time fundamentally flawed? Might our perception of time in fact be an illusion, a phenomenon created in our brains that has no ultimate reality? Is the stunning fine-tuning of the universe, which has produced just the right conditions for life to evolve, a sign that a “principle of creation” is at work in our world? If such a principle of creation undergirds the workings of the universe, what does that tell us about whether or not there is a divine Creator? How does the radical interpretation of reality offered by quantum physics conform to and yet differ from the Buddhist conception of reality? What is consciousness and how did it evolve? Can consciousness exist apart from a brain generating it?

The stimulating journey of discovery the authors traveled in their discussions is re-created beautifully in The Quantum and the Lotus, written in the style of a lively dialogue between friends. Both the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and the discoveries of contemporary science are introduced with great clarity, and the reader will be profoundly impressed by the many correspondences between the two streams of thought and revelation. Through the course of their dialogue, the authors reach a remarkable meeting of minds, ultimately offering a vital new understanding of the many ways in which science and Buddhism confirm and complement each other and of the ways in which, as Matthieu Ricard writes, “knowledge of our spirits and knowledge of the world are mutually enlightening and empowering.”

“The Quantum and the Lotus is a mind-expanding, eye-opening exploration of the exciting parallels between cutting-edge thinking in physics and Buddhism–a scintillating conversation any thinking person would delight in overhearing.” —Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence

“The Quantum and the Lotus is the rich and inspiring result of a deeply interesting dialogue between Western science and Buddhist philosophy. This remarkable book will contribute greatly to a better understanding of the true nature of our world and the way we live our lives.” —His Holiness the Dalai Lama

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-08-29

Fascinating book focusing on BIG questions about the nature of reality around us and, indeed, inside us!:) Everybody interested in frontiers of science and it's limitations or willing to explore mind-matter topics and much more will find this easy-to-follow presentation of the authors really refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely great dialogue on the nature of things.......2006-08-16

This book is a record of a meeting of two men. Each chose a different path on the same quest - understanding the nature of things. One is an astrophysicist, the other is a monk. They present methods, discoveries and beliefs of both paths - and find them closer than they thought. Their dialogue is enriching and informative.

I learned a lot from this book, both as a Buddhist and as someone interested in modern science. My copy has been already read by my father and my friends.

    Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Trinh Xuan Thuan failed evil test.......2006-03-22

Prf. Trinh Xuan Thuan did not believe in Buddhism because it is THE truth. He knew the only cosmological model that fits Buddhist cosmology is the oscilatory model (Big Bang, Big Crunch, Big Bang, Big Crunch, ...) but this model is scientifically NOT proven.

Prf. Trinh believes Buddhism as the "cosmic religion" (he quoted Einstein) because he did not pass the EVIL (specially evil in religions; he quoted the crusades, the jihad, etc.) test: i.e. why evil, why God did not intefere, etc.....

To me, Trinh's Quantum failed Trinh's Lotus......

5 out of 5 stars Enlightenment - Now in Paperback!.......2006-03-16

This dazzling spectacle of literary genius brought tears to my eyes. Its graceful picture of the universe transcends the pages so that the reader may feel the heartbeat of all creation become one with their own.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Physics, Buddhism, and Metaphysics.......2005-06-22

I was a bit skeptical upon first seeing this book. I worried about another floofy book about New Age/Western Buddhism. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. This book is a fairly dense "argument" between the present positions of astrophysics/quantum physics and the Buddhist metaphysics. I'm a philosopher by trade and I read a lot of popular science books (especially in physics) so I managed well with the text. However, I think it may frustrate some persons without any background. So, ultimately, unless you are somewhat familiar with contemporary physics, you might want, regrettably, to skip this one.

The Buddhist in the book is a very intelligent chap, more than capable of explaining/defending his position. And he successfully presents Buddhism in a very intellectual manner. I learned a lot about the Buddhist position with regard to cosmology - which is wonderful because that's what I hoped to get out of the book. I think this book should quiet some of the stereotypes of Buddhists... and it would be most enjoyed by persons who do not draw a hard absolute line between natural science and religious practice.

Padmasambhava is the primary master of Vajrayana, the teachings for our time. Out of his great compassion and wisdom, he instructed his main disciple Yeshe Tsogyal to conceal terma treasures to be revealed at the destined time for future practitioners. The profundity of this advice is meant to be personally applied by all individuals in all circumstances. Advice from the Lotus Born is a classic work which contains valid truth for anyone who sincerely wants to follow a spiritual path.

      4 out of 5 stars Multi-level Teachings.......2007-09-18

This collection of 12 termas (hidden treasures) from 6 tertons (treasure revealers), p. 9: "companion volume to Dakini Teachings : Padmasambhava's Oral Instructions to Lady Tsogyal (Dragon Editions Ser.)," varies widely in level of teachings. The smaller termas & the early parts of the longer are at an introductory level--possibly due to the supposition that Buddhist practice would have all but died out when hidden texts were discovered (~the Dead Sea Scrolls). But in longer chapters ("A Spur to Spiritual Practice" & esp. "The Treasury of Precious Jewels to Dispel Hindrances"), are subtle & profound Dzogchen teachings--p. 136: "When you realize that all that appears & exists to be your mind, there is no path of enlightenment apart from that...When Samsaric existence is freed in itself, there is no awakened state to accomplish apart form that. Once you realize this, samsara & nirvana are not two." More mid-level--p. 69: Shamatha & Vipashyana; Chod: p. 76: "The demon is your own demon & cutting through it pacifies yourself...Therefore, it is a greater enhancement to confront a single frightening place than to do three years of meditation."

It has two seeming contradictions: p. 30: "If you give with compassion & bodhichitta you achieve hundredfold merit. If you give without bodhichitta resolve, your merit will not increase," since 100 times nothing is nothing! Also, p. 76: "This secret conduct is not only aimed at the thought of demons but also at cutting through contagious diseases such as leprosy & feelings of fear, dread, repulsion, disgust, timidity, cowardice, embarrassment & so forth" vs. p. 90: "You become defiled from...having contact with lepers." But, I assume such instructions were aimed at differing levels of practitioners engaged in different practices per p. 142: "The intelligent person instructed in what is not interesting will remain unsatisfied, which will diminish his faith."

Provocatively, p. 73: "How will my bodhichitta, which is merely platitudes & intellectual idea, accomplish the true meaning?" & p. 120: "Best is when such a master is within reach; if not, it is sad. For whoever has supreme faith and resolve, the Buddha will be present as if in person." My favorite pith advice is: p. 143: "Unless you eradicate your own inner faults the vile zombie of disturbing emotions will rise again, even though you have glimpsed the blissful & clear state of wakefulness." How true!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best concise books on the Vajrayan Dharma........2006-03-13

Padmasambhava as most of you know was completedly enlightened. So, what a blessing it is to have access to material writen and dictated by himself. Under his immedeate counsel.

This book is good for practioners of every level. But, specially for those who are midway their paths. The direct advices will cut straight through the BS still there. And for begginers I think it definitely will inspire them.

This is an absolutely must have.

Hope that this review will drive you to read this book and the merit you'll collect brings us all to perfect liberation.

      Rob

5 out of 5 stars it is what it says it is.......2005-05-29

Another important volume, also important to remember that intent is the crux of any action. Inspiring regardless of how much the advice is put into practice, and of course, this lifetime isn't quite over yet.

5 out of 5 stars The father of Tibetan Buddhism.......2004-03-12

Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, is credited as being the main person who brought Buddhism to Tibet, and is also understood by Tibetan Buddhists to have been a Buddha himself.

In some contexts, one approaches teachings directly at their source first, and then looks to commentaries, explanations, etc. For example, in Protestant Christianity, one is often encouraged to go straight to the New Testament and read that. Then one reads the works of theologians, biblical scholars, preachers, and so on.

However, in Buddhism the approach is often the opposite. First one goes to a teacher who is a contemporary of yours. Then, having gained some confidence from that teacher, and having put into practice some of the teachings and having seen their effectiveness and practicality, one then turns to some other writings of an introductory nature. After having gained some grounding in those, one may then turn to a commentary on a root text. Then, one may read the root texts oneself. Lastly, one may turn to the sutras and words of the Buddha himself. Trying to start there, however, would not be advised -- as anyone who has tried to read the Tripitaka (the three baskets of teachings of the Buddha) or the tantras can attest!

Similarly in the case of this text -- one should have a good grounding before attempting very difficult texts, and they should in all cases be read while one is studying with a lama. Otherwise, misunderstandings may occur, and these may be worse than not having encountered the text in the first place. But if one does have that grounding, what greater treasure is there than to read such wonderful texts?

I write this review, and give it five stars, in part because I saw that there are already three reviews and even though each one praised the book, for some reason one of the reviews shows up as having no stars (a bug in Amazon's system, I suppose), and so the general rating of this book was only three and a half. Yet, clearly, stars cannot estimate the value of such works...

5 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful........2003-05-26

"Don't mistake mere words to be the meaning of the teachings. Mingle the practice with your own being and attain liberation right now." It really is advice, in plain English.
