David Bach's Smart Women Finish Rich is a homage to the financial wisdom of his grandmother; it's also an excellent foundation for women who are starting to get their financial lives in order. Bach's approach to money management is rooted in years of investment seminars for women and his work as senior vice president of investments at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. During that time he recognized that "people rarely know what is truly driving them emotionally when it comes to money." In response, Bach has written a guide to money management for women based on his belief that "financial planning is as much an emotional issue as it is an intellectual one." Are you considering your values in your work and investing? What part of your daily work is driven by your goals in life? Is your latte habit preventing you from accumulating substantial wealth? Bach addresses tax strategies, wills, insurance, retirement plans, and investments in a highly accessible manner. Smart Women Finish Rich ably bridges the gap between simple saving strategies and preparing for widowhood and financial independence. --Brad Doll

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for all women!.......2007-09-26

David Bach provides helpful and realistic advice when it comes to money. He brings home the ways we all spend money on unimportant things and how if channeled in the right direction can yield a very comfy nest egg. It was GREAT to have it to listen to in the car. I've lent it out to several women so far and they are all big fans of it.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read.......2007-09-18

I haven't finished the book yet but so far so good! It's an easy read and I read it when I have time. Small enough to carry in a bad and take with me everywhere. So far I've learned alot and hope to finish it soon!

5 out of 5 stars Women should read this book..........2007-09-05

My dad used to tell me that all I had to do was to marry a man and he will take care of me. I never bought into that and didn't get much more financial advice outside of that from him. This book offers some good advice. It is true that switching over my savings account to a higher interest earning account has more than paid for the cost of buying this book. It is more of a motivational book but has some good tips on how to get started for personal financial planning. When I talked to a financial planner he was surprised how much I knew about finance and what I wanted to do with my money. I also like what Bach has to say about educating future generations - what we need to teach our kids.

5 out of 5 stars The Book for Every Woman.......2007-09-02

I would suggest that every woman read this book and not only read it but actually putting the priniciples into practice and making a plan for their finances.

This book really helped me to see how much I was on track and also showed me some areas that needed to be tweaked.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool!.......2007-09-01

I purchased this book for my daughter who just graduated from college & began a career. It proved not only valuable to me as I plan for retirement but it's also a valuable tool for her as she sorts through managing a bugdet & planning a future. This book is written for women, in our language. I'd recommend it to other women.

This book isn't as good as the other ones. I mean,it was a good book, but I think the other ones were better. But it does help you about spending money and stuff. But it also was a little boring at parts.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Girl's Guide Review.......2007-05-14

My daughter's love this book. Although it doesn't give a "how to" on budgeting, it does give a solid understanding of how to make and save money by being careful on what to spend their money on.

4 out of 5 stars Another great American Girl book!.......2007-05-09

The quality of the A.G. books are always great! Age appropriate and full of different information to help the child learn about that subject- hoping for a daughter that loves to save money after reading this book....wish me luck!

5 out of 5 stars Every girl should have this book!.......2006-10-02

This book was awesome! It talked about saving, spending wisely, credit cards, starting a business and much more! I got this book and it helped me so much! I also use it as a reference book. I think every girl should have it. Go American Girl!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely educational, extremely fun!.......2006-08-07

"A Smart Girl's Guide To Money" is an inspiring book and really teaches girls- or any person- to save money. It also explains about bank accounts, interest, and other important things needed for life. Everyone should read this educational, wise, and fascinating guide.

It also introduces girls to having a job, keeping track of money, and just plain being responsible. That, I think, is a wonderful thing to promote. I loved "A Smart Girl's Guide To Money" the first time I looked into it. Every girl should read it; it's really a remarkable book!

Book Description

As the daughter of one of the founders of H&R Block, Barbara Stanny grew up depending on her father, and later her husband, to manage her money--until a devastating financial crisis became a dramatic wake-up call. She knew she had to take control. But how? Stanny began her inspirational journey to financial enlightenment by interviewing successful women from diverse backgrounds. As a result of her research, she discovered a surprising series of common-sense ideas that smart women shared. In this informative financial guidebook, Stanny uses these insights to show women how to go from feeling helpless to being knowledgeable and confident about money. Prince Charming Isn't Coming weaves together sensible advice, refreshing anecdotes, and the author's own poignant experiences. It addresses the psychological stumbling blocks that prevent many women from managing their own money and offers savvy, practical checklists to guide them toward financial stability. This is the book that can take any woman from an unsure future to a secure one--before a crisis strikes.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More of a Pep Talk than useful information.......2007-01-14

I expected this book to have more information. I expected to learn more about finances. The entire first half of the book is just a pep talk, saying that women need to learn more about money (I know I need to learn more about money; that's why I bought a book I thought would teach me something). The second half finally offers some useful advice, but still the short of it is: Do Research! (I know I should do research; that's why I'm reading books). There are a few notable pointers here and there, but you really have to dig. They are so in the middle of pep talk and testimonials about feelings that they could be easy to gloss over.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Book I Refuse to Lend Out.......2006-04-25

I ordered this book a year ago, then took about six months to get around to reading it. Wow - just proves her point that money wasn't a subject I felt comfortable even thinking about, and now I wish I'd read it sooner. This book has absolutely changed my way of thinking and, thank heavens, my life. After two failed engagements, I found myself in a financial morass I thought I'd never escape. This book helped me feel less stupid, more empowered, and very rah-rah-get-going. It helped me understand my thinking well enough to begin to change it, and by understanding I don't mean realizing I was making mistakes, but the reasons WHY I was making them. I now recommend this book to every single woman I know (single or otherwise), refuse to lend my own copy (I re-read bits each week) and am working my way towards a balanced investment portfolio. BTW, my prince has come along and he thinks it's sexy that I am financially independent -- I wouldn't have been so attractive if I were the 'old' financial me.

3 out of 5 stars If it's so motivational . . ........2006-03-29

Why aren't this author's books available in an audio format? I'm too busy working my behind off to be a voracious book reader. I appreciate using my commute time (no matter the destination) to feed my brain. A big part of motivation is in the voice.

5 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful.......2004-12-29

I found Barbara Stanny through David Bach's (*The Automatic Millionaire*) recommended reading list, and I'm pretty sure her books are changing my life. Ignore the whiners who complain "There's not enough investment advice in this book!" because that's not what *Prince Charming Isn't Coming* is about--and it's not at all what it *claims* to be about. It's about realizing that YOU, and only YOU, are in charge of your financial life, and that controlling your money and owning your future is actually much easier, more gratifying and less trouble than NOT enriching your life and understanding your money. Barbara Stanny is like an Abraham Lincoln for women--she sets us free. Her communication style is impeccable, and I want to give a copy of her--okay, her books--to everyone I know. HIGHLY recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend this one!.......2003-12-23

This book was fun to read and inspiring. I'd recommend it for any woman, (and a few men I know) who need to get their arms around the whole money issue. I'm about to buy her newest book. Hope it's just as good!

Book Description

If you can take only one lesson away from this book, let it be this: The only person you can depend on to take care of you financially is...you!!!

Successful businesswoman Georgette Mosbacher learned this lesson the hard way. Rich and socially prominent now, this smart, ambitious woman grew up in poverty, helping to raise her three younger siblings while her grandmother and mother worked to keep the family afloat after her father's death. As an adult, divorces from two powerful men left her financially and emotionally bereft, while a split from the former Cabinet Secretary Robert Mosbacher rocked her world yet again. Georgette's eventual triumph over these deeply painful experiences taught her, at her very core, that women cannot depend on anyone but themselves for their financial and emotional well-being. She learned the critical role that money plays in every woman's ability to achieve her goals. And she learned many specific yet simple strategies to ensure her won financial security and, beyond that, to accumulate real wealth--the kind of wealth that ultimately enabled her to make her loftiest dreams come true.

Now, Georgette shares the secrets of her financial success and emotional triumphs with you. Whether you're starting your first job or entering your golden years, whether you're married, single, widowed, or divorced, whether you're living on a modest income or earning a bundle, Georgette's simple step-by-step plan for economic independence will give you the tools you need to take control of your money and make your own financial dreams come true.

As down-to-earth and outspoken as Georgette is herself, It Takes Money, Honey is a truly comprehensive money guide, covering all aspects of a woman's financial life. Sharing examples from her own experiences, along with those of a diverse group of women, Georgette offers sound, straightforward strategies to help you live within your means, build your savings, invest for the future and achieve your financial goals. She shows how to create a financial safety net so you will never be caught short in a crisis, from the loss of your job to the loss of your husband. You'll learn about ways you can maximize your earnings and minimize your debts. And you will learn how to overcome the emotional hurdles that prevent us from making the most of our money as well as how to develop the attitude and style that are essential to achieving your goals in life.

Among the specific issues she addresses:

How to break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle

How to get out of debt, and stay out of debt for good

How to easily build a fully diversified easy-to-understand investment portfolio with as little as $100

How to make sure you're paid what you're worth

How to make a success of your own business

How to ensure financial fairness in your relationship with men

And why it's critical for every woman to build a secret stash of cash that only she knows about

But It Takes Money, Honey is about a lot more than just ensuring financial security. It is, in fact, a guide to realizing all of your goals, a realistic and pragmatic manual that will show you how to live the kind of life you dream about. Not the kind of life your parents wanted for you, not the kind of life that your husband or boyfriend wants, not the kind of life that your friends hope to lead, but your own, very personal vision of what will bring you happiness and fulfillment. Because, as Georgette says, "Life shouldn't only be about being safe. Financial security is crucial but it's not enough. You should always, always be reaching for more."

In It Takes Money, Honey, Georgette tells you exactly how to get it. The rest is up to you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very useful advice.......2004-04-28

I found this book very useful from a professional standpoint: I am a divorce lawyer whose clients are mostly women. I am always surprised to find how many women, in this day and age, still depend on men for their financial security. I have met so many women who are divorcing (or being divorced) and have absolutely no idea how much their husband earns, whether he has any savings, investments or other assets, where he does his banking, and so on. Furthermore, they have no savings of their own. As you can imagine, this puts them at a tremendous advantage. Georgette's advice is very basis - too basic for women who are already financially savvy - but most women would benefit from reading this book and applying its principles.

2 out of 5 stars Hits and Misses.......2003-03-08

This book is best when Georgettte is describing her own personal experiences and triumphes over difficult circumstances. At those times, I am inspired by her determination and encouraged to keep strong in my own struggles. But her much discussed separation and divorce cracked her wide open. Lots of her deeply held beliefs do tumble out here and there. Despite all of her experience, she really seems to think it takes a man to be complete. It's just an overall impression I get from the book. (Honey you are successful now) And the advice on investing sounds pretty funny (written before the market went bust) now that we're all losing all those unrealized capital gains that intoxicated everyone over the last decade. It was hard for me to figure out what the book was supposeed to be? A pep-talk? Financial advice? Well, it was probably healing for her to write. I do empathize with her pain over her divorce.
Georgette is an admirable woman and I like her; won't stop liking her. But the book's not that great.

5 out of 5 stars And to think this was a FLUFF book........2002-07-04

Wow, I am very impressed with this book! I've seen this book in the bookstore on various occasions, but I didn't purchase it because I thought it was a bunch of fluff and no substance. Well, my curiousity got the better of me and I just had to read it. After several pages, I had to stop reading it....because the information hit me square in the head and I had to get a notebook to jot the information down! You see, I have a demanding career, and I'm starting a business of my own. Despite that, I was depending on man to secure my future. Thank Goodness for Georgette's advice "wake up" is perfect for what I need in my life. I sure wish my mom had read it before my dad passed away. My mom fell victim to a lot of stuff that was addressed in the book...but she didn't know any alternative. I didn't either, and I would've made the same mistakes. Georgette is like the friend who tells you what you need to hear, whether you WANT to hear it or not. I will be buying several copies for friends/family for sure. I hope to meet Georgette one day and thank her for kicking my [rear end] into the right direction. Maybe it'll be on a plane in the first-class section!

5 out of 5 stars Common sense approach to money for women........1999-08-22

This is the first financial planning book any woman should read. Ms. Mosbacher gives simple and specific advice on how to get started planning your financial future. The reader should keep in mind, however, that Ms. Mosbacher believes that money is the most important thing in the world. As long as one doesn't lose perspective, the guidelines in this book are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The Unsinkable Georgette Does It Again!.......1999-07-20

Georgette Mosbacher is a real inspiration. Despite the naysayers who won't acknowlegde her achievements due to her marriages to high-profile, high-finance husbands, one only has to read this book and her last ("Feminine Force") to realize that this lady knows what she's talking about. "Money, Honey" it very practical (none of this visualizing mumbo jumbo ala Suze Orman) and covers the basics of managing money very well. No, it's not an academic financial analysis, but the fact is the basic financial skills she writes about are, unfortunately, concepts many women have no clue about implementing in their lives. Too many have the idea that money is some mystery, like fate or luck, that either you have or you don't. Georgette empowers the reader by saying "You may not have it yet, but I'll show you how you can get it." Georgette is to be commended for writing a book that will help a lot of people take money seriously and improve their well-bing as a result. On a personal note, I was sorry to read in the book that Robert Mosbacher walked away from this very intelligent, beautiful, elegant woman. His loss! Best wishes for future happiness, Georgette. You deserve it.

I never write reviews, but Ms Briles' sheer cheek has made me want to.

The book itself is, well, mildly OK, simply not well enough written to really capture anyone's attention. The explanations about different financial products seem to have been written in a bit of a hurry and not revised. Unless you have a basic financial education, you won't understand much, and if you do, then you won't learn anything new. You'd be much better off reading something by David Bach.

The sheer cheek of the author is the way she logs on to Amazon to review her own book with five stars - twice. I suppose she was worried by the fact that nobody else had posted a review. Well, now I have.

5 out of 5 stars Financial Guide for All.......2003-07-18

I purchased my first copy of BW Guide in 1999. Since then, I have loan my book out to others, purchased copies for friends and advised family to use many of the principals outlined in the book.
My family & friends - Men, Women, Black, White and Latino have all benefited from Ms. Broussard advice. This book does not overwhelm its reader with information, but focuses on the basics. It uses examples of real life people and situations that are believable and we can relate to.
This book is a buy. I recently purchased a used copy through Amazon for my 18-year-old cousin, for it is never too early or late to learn to trust money.

    5 out of 5 stars Sisters, don't defeat yourselves!.......2000-12-08

Don't defeat yourselves! This book is helpful for us African-American women who want to take control of their financial future. Waiting for Mr. Right to rescue you from financial instability is self-defeating. You are just putting yourself in deeper debt if you think he'll rescue you. Whether you are married, single, or divorce, this book is for us. Take control of your financial responsibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Every women should own this book regardless of race!!!.......1998-05-27

Cheryl Broussard presents logical & easy to follow steps for women to gain financial independence & to build wealth. You are never too young or old to start saving or putting your "financial house" in order. I also would advise buying her other book, Sister CEO.

5 out of 5 stars The book is dynamic, informative and a must for all women.......1997-06-26

This book has changed my financial life. After reading this book, I realized all the things I buy myself because I deserve them are because I want them. I am now in the process of building that 25K - 50K savings account. Thanks Ms. Broussar

This book is great for begineers and speaks at that level. Even if you are an intermediate level you will still enjoy the outline of this book. The follow up book is good too.

This was an amazing book. I first read it when i was 18. I am not the reason this book is sold out at 4 diffrent borders location aroudn town. This book is Phenomonal and i HIGHLY recommend women in general reading. I give it as a gift all the time. I started with my mom and my sister and they both loved it. The book is very informative and simple to understand. The book ranged from words i had heard before but was to embrassed to ask what they ment- to more advanced ideas and concepts. The book also isn't just about Finanaces it is about finding the blance ina ll aspect of you life. I was motivated and inspired. I got to meet Vanessa and attened one of her Wealth and Sucess workshops and she sincerly belives and backs and lives everything she talks about. She is an amazing person and a great example for us all.

4 out of 5 stars Book plus website = financial freedom! .......2004-11-25

I LOVED this book and was so motivated while I was reading it that I signed up for an online software before I got halfway through! Everybody keeps saying that tracking your spending is the first step to saving money, getting out of debt and building a retirement fund. But I've always found Quicken and Money and all those other programs really boring and complicated. Thank God for moneypants.com. Their cashtracking software is tailor-made for idiots like me who prefer pictures to numbers!

5 out of 5 stars Great for any woman!!.......2003-06-05

Summers is great at introducing her topics in a manner that is not overwhelming. Plus she gives great tips and facts to back up why you should take care of your finances. An excellent read for a recent college grad or your mother.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the serious investor.......2002-03-07

The book was short, light and easy to read. It was also a very superficial treatment of the topic, more of a cheerleading tome than anything else. If you want hard numbers/facts, look elsewhere.
