5 out of 5 stars The Most Important Prep Course.......2007-09-18

Parents spend thousands on SAT preparation, tens of thousands on a private school education, and then leave their assets to the tender mercies of the Board of Education. Don't allow your financial future to be savaged by the struggle to cover ever-increasing college costs. It is essential to know how your answers to the 103 questions that comprise the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be interpreted. I read Sallie Mae's book, which highly recommends Sallie Mae loans - calls them an "investment". They are not, they are a long-term debt. Kalman Chaney offers unbiased advice for maximizing your awards, minimizing your debt, and weighing your college choices with more tools (like cost-to-attend and likelihood of providing aid) in hand. It is an eye opening book, I ordered the annual update, too. It is a bit overwhelming, and even if you decide to hire a college funding advisor to help you with this process, you should still buy the book.

3 out of 5 stars Struggling to get through it.......2007-08-16

After several months, I'm not quite halfway through the book, because just about anything else is more interesting and will supersede this on my reading list. That's probably not Princeton's fault. I could use a guide about one-third the length of this book.

Less conscientious readers would probably get a lot out of this by skipping many sections, but the college aid process is entirely new to me, so I'm skipping precious little.

The review also points out (quite correctly, I'm sure) that the parent's relationship with the financial aid officer is by nature--civil, respectful, cordial--but adversarial. The whole thought that I'll have to arrange the financial facts of my family to my best advantage is, for reasons that are difficult to explain, discouraging.

5 out of 5 stars Paying for College Without Going Broke.......2007-03-19

This book became the "Bible for financial aid", it was a great tool for guidance into the aid process. I was able to take the information and negotitate a better aid package for my son and daughter. Thanks to the Princeton review! P.S. my daughter received 9 letters of acceptance and over $14,000.00 in scholarships and grants.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for parents.......2007-02-13

This book offers some helpful advice for maximizing the amount of aid one might receive.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth much more than you will pay for!!.......2007-04-01

I am returning to college after a "millenium"... having been out of touch of the financial aid process, not knowing credible sources of info regarding smart ways to optimally secure financial aid money... this book is the guide and "Guru"! It talks to you as though you are a parent trying to understand Financial Aid to help pay for your childrens' college expenses.. Well it helps you to first relax, and know that you don't have to do it all by yourself... no matter how late in the game you've entered. It does not beat around the bush and give you weak links... instead its pretty straight forward, it tells you about the Financial Aid process as it is, and informs you not only about various federal+state aids, but also private ones too... For the student this book is gold indeed... so if you are a parent, certainly read this book thoroughly, because you are bound to find ways you can save and get more help to fund your childrens' educational expenses.. You're an investor, investing in your kids... so by reading this book, you are ensuring that you investment will go a long way! That's smart :-) ...it will also help you to learn about all eligible tax deductions.. so you can intelligently discuss about these with your tax specialist. Great book for parents who are looking at various college savings plans for their children.

Make your children read and understand all that's covered in this book... you are doing it for them.. they need to help themselves too! ... especially because they will need to learn the tricks+tips of scholarships, grants, negotiating for more aid money, etc.. most of which they will need to do at college... so don't let them off the hook... make sure they have really worked this book in and out...

Next, for people like myself returning to college... this book is a must! Cannot emphasize this enough... it will set you ahead of the financial aid game, and will give you the tools to use when negotiating for more money, scholarships, loans, etc... This will be of particular importance to "Independent Students"..

Instead of stressing for college aid/money, do something about it - Go get this book now and spend a silent weekend absorbed in it! Bring out that investor in you :-)

5 out of 5 stars FastWeb College Gold: The Step-by-Step Guide to Paying for College.......2007-01-12

This is an EXCELLENT book for any family that has a child going to college soon. I can not say enough good things about this book. If I could give it more stars I would.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but not outstanding.......2007-01-10

Good information for someone that has not begun the college search but not what I expected for our more indepth searching.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-11-28

College Gold is written in plain language and is logically organized. The book is an excellent resource manual that provides essential information in a user-friendly manner. As a HS Guidance Director, I especially recommend College Gold for students and parents just starting out, with little or no knowledge of what lies ahead. Planning and savings suggestions are quite sound as are the sections on evaluating aid "packages," making monetary decisions, and avoiding scams. Overall, I'd rate College Gold as one of the better comprehensive financial aid guides on the market today.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2006-10-05

I am a financial aid director and this book will really help families with the financial aid process. It's easy to read and the information is right on!

This book can really help first time parents with the college funding process!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome resource.......2006-03-22

I am a parent and I really loved this college guide! I have read several guides and this really did a great job of reviewing the colleges from an African-American perspective. My husband went to a historically black university (HBU) and he felt the comparison of the historically black university (HBU) to the predominately white universities was incredibly accurate.

Thsi book exceeded my expectations!

5 out of 5 stars It's A Great Help Guide ! ! !.......2003-10-03

This is a tip to students and parents. If you have a good student who is trying to get into a select school, this is the best help guide I've seen in years. My daughter and friends made top schools using this one

The information provided in the book was informative, however over 1/3 of the letters I mailed out requesting scholarship information were returned due to bad addresses.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful Resource for Student and Parents.......2001-09-21

This guidebook has been meticulously researched and gives readers the kind of heads-up needed to get in the best schools and find money to pay for it. Solid info and insider coaching for every phase of the process. Invaluale.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!!.......2001-05-25

This book is outstanding! I should have ordered two copies, because my daughter and I hounded each other for the book. We couldn't put it down. It gives great advice on every aspect of the application process. It gave my daughter the extra confidence that she needed. My daughter took it to school and everyone who saw the book wanted to know where and how to get it. Every student should have a copy of this book. I highly recommend it.

    2 out of 5 stars common sense.......2003-06-29

This book only has common sense ideas in it. I generally like the motley fools products. However, this book should be purchased only by those who do not have a basic understanding of how to save or prepare for college. We all know it is best to start saving early and talk to people at the schools about how to get a scholarship.

5 out of 5 stars Who Knew School Could be So Affordable?.......2003-03-29

This book tackles a daunting financial topic and makes it easy to digest. Best of all, it's only 125 pages, so I didn't have to commit hours and hours of my time to learn what I needed to know. The book offered charts, tables and plain English, distilling topics such as the Education IRA (now called the Coverdell ESA), 529 Plans (there are two main kinds of these and you can sock away up to $100,000 or more in them -- who knew??) and even paying for elementary school and grad school. Oh -- and did I mention that it's funny, too?

Finally, a financial aid resource we can use! We've bought several financial aid guides recently in anticipation of our childrens' upcoming collegiate years. All have been either VERY confusing or too light to be of any real use. In "Conquer the Cost of College", the author presents a clear and concise plan to get the most aid for your college bound child. No gimmicks here, just great information, organized in easy to follow steps. If you have a high school student headed for college and are looking to save money, this is THE guide to use...Thanks!

This is the best financial aid book that I seen! It's written in a clear, consise manner. Thanks to "Conquer the Cost of College", I actually have a better understanding of the financial aid process! The sample letters, budgets and worksheets are an amazing resource. Parents would have to be crazy not to invest in this book. I highly recommend it to all families with high school students.

This guide is the best! Step-by-step help in getting government aid, scholarships, and the best rates on loans. The chapter on negotiating financial aid with schools was really helpful in our daughter's case; she was able to go to her first choice school after we wrote an appeal letter modeled on one in the book and got her aid increased SUBSTANTIALLY! We found a lot of ways to save money using the sample budgets and worksheets in the book. This book is an incredible value!. It saved us thousands of dollars.

Don Betterton does a very good job of trying to take each type of student and setting them up with as many financial aid avenues as possible. However, no two students have the same need and the same financial background. Therefore it is difficult in order to resolve so many problems or opportunities for so many students. His many years at Princeton gives him the authority of saying in no uncertain terms "I have heard it all and here are a few options for YOU to think about". There are many books on this subject and this one does a good job of trying to educate the reader on the most options available.
