5 out of 5 stars IRA for the long term.......2007-06-27

I think I understood the underlying theme of this book, but the author made it more difficult to read and understand than need be. It seemed he was trying to be either clever or funny to the detriment of the content.

4 out of 5 stars Help when I Need It.......2007-01-13

ONly on the first chapter and already learning what I should be doing. Easy to read and understand. With book's help I may be able to save a lot of money.

5 out of 5 stars Concise info on stretch IRA's.......2007-01-04

Ed Slott is considered THE expert on stretch IRA's. Book is aimed at investors who will probably die before depleting their IRA funds. It explains how to structure a stretch IRA to pass this money on to future generations with minimal taxation.

Book is better organized than Slott's previous books. It is very readable. I keep it for a reference and have purchased additional copies for gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Requried Reading for Anyone with an IRA........2006-07-23

This book focuses on ensuring that your IRA is properly set up, so that it can be passed on to beneficiaries intact, effectively establishing a "stretch IRA". The stretch IRA describes an IRA held by a beneficiary, and which will pay out over their lifetime.

This book is very well organized, and the author is clearly very enthusiastic about his subject. He does quite well making his case, that you should ensure your IRA passes intact to a beneficiary, in that it can offer them HUGE tax advantages for their entire life time.

He is also quite good about explaining the steps you need to achieve this. Much of the book is reference material that will not apply to everyone at any given time, but that is not a real criticism. The book is cheap enough, and the sections that apply to all are worth the entire purchase price.

If you have an IRA, and you have any desire to pass your assets along to a beneficiary, this book is an excellent starting point.

Book Description

Common Sense Approach Looks at Wealth Transition With Insight and Integrity

Are you concerned about the impact of wealth on your heirs? Are your heirs prepared for the responsibilities of wealth? In Preparing Heirs, Roy Williams and Vic Preisser disclose the surprising findings from their research into the legacies of 3,250 wealthy families. With extraordinary insight, they reveal what the relatively small number of successful families had in common—how they achieved and maintained family harmony, and ensured the smooth transition of their wealth to well-adjusted heirs. They also warn of the wide range of factors that cause the majority of wealthy families to fail in their transition.

Preparing Heirs offers clear, concise, well-organized, and easy-to-follow instructions that will enable you to evaluate your plan for transitioning family wealth. Used in conjunction with qualified professionals such as attorneys and accountants, this book can help you develop a plan to transmit the family values underlying the accumulation of wealth and prepare your heirs to be good stewards and thoughtful administrators of that wealth.

5 out of 5 stars Family Transitions, Wealth, Relationships, Values.......2006-09-05

"Preparing Heirs" is a common sense approach to insuring that you and your family take the necessary steps to successfully transition your family assets and values.

The text is accompanied with easy to use, tables, charts, and questionnaires to summarize and illustrate forecasts, causes of failure, heir readiness, and other step by step checklists. The authors have created situations, and cases to illustrate more clearly the principles presented. Their analysis includes both successful and unsuccessful family examples.

Personally, I found the wealth transition checklist invaluable. The details for establishing a mission statement, involving participation of family members, establishing their future roles, and the process of communicating estate, and asset distribution plans provided helpful guidelines.

The summary statements provide either a warning note or an opportunity for implementation. For example: "The most important single issue that undermines successful transfers of wealth is the breakdown of trust and communications within the family unit."

Roy Williams, consultant, and author, with a career of 40 years coaching, researching, and educating families in areas of successful finance, is well qualified to co-author this significant work. Vic Preisser adds his expertise in business, government, and his experience as the Director of the Institute for Family Business at the University of the Pacific to round out this team of authors.

This is an important book for you and your heirs regardless of the size of you estate.

5 out of 5 stars An astutely written collection of solid advice.......2003-10-19

Successful businessman Roy Williams and experienced family coach Vic Preisser successfully and expertly collaborate to present Preparing Heirs: Five Steps To A Successful Transition Of Family Wealth And Values, a straightforward guide to facilitating the smooth transfer of great wealth from one generation to the next. Focusing on five crucial steps, as well as pitfalls to beware and issues to keep firmly in mind when grooming one's heirs to become responsible future beneficiaries, Preparing Heirs is an astutely written collection of solid advice and is very highly recommended reading for anyone seeking to have their children (and their children's children) continue to promote, preserve, and extend their family's financial and ethical heritage.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't Know My Way To The Courthouse.......2003-12-05

This is a good book if you don't have a lawyer in the family who can answer your probate questions. I had never even been in the courthouse and I didn't know what to expect, so I found this bok a big help. It answers the "dumb" questions that the other books skip. (My 3rd grade teacher always told me there's no such thing as a dumb question). There's also chapters on last illnesses and funerals which similar books don't have. On the other hand the tax materials seem dated, because it's an older book, but then again, if you're not a millionaire you won't be paying death taxes anyway. If you're going to serve as an executor or you're thinking about it and you can only afford to buy one book, this is the one to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Easy To Read.......2000-05-17

Though this book is easy to read, I believe that it is TOO simple-minded to be of much use for estate planning, preparing a will, settling an estate or anything else concerning death. The author clearly presumes that the reader knows absolutely nothing. More than half the book's pages are tax forms and the IRS instructions for preparing those forms (for the year 1996). Since all current forms are easily available for download from the IRS Internet site or from a local IRS office, including such old forms in the book can only serve to pad the book or to give a very general overview of the potential tax issues an executor may face. Moreover, the death tax laws since 1997 are barely mentioned. The author takes a great deal of space explaining the definitions of terms which are commonly known and giving examples which are common sense. The best and most useful part of the book is Appendix B, which lists all of the states and shows the differences between them in matters concerning wills and taxes. Few other probate books give this information. Also, I should mention that the author avoids those repeated admonitions found in every other book supposedly written for new executors: "You are too stupid to figure out how to do this job. Hire a lawyer and an accountant!" If you are only interested in a very simple overview of probate, wills, estate planning, trusts, and death taxes, then this is the book for you. If however you need details and already understand many of the issues involved, go to your library or buy another book - preferably one written within the last couple of years.

    Book Description

Estate planning has more procrastination, indecision, and inertia associated with it than any other area of planning. Affluent baby boomers, in particular, as the beneficiaries of the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in history, have a daunting set of financial concerns with which to contend. Here at last is a step-by-step approach to estate planning that equips planners and financial advisors to help clients tackle this important process once and for all.

Most clients understandably find planning concepts and strategies confusing, but most also have a fairly sound understanding of who and what is most important to them. These are the priorities from which to build the foundation of a successful estate plan. The seven principles explored in this book use personal values as a basis to form The Legacy Planning System TM. With this approach, advisors can:
