Book Description
Since the initial publication of this breakthrough work, motivational interviewing (MI) has been used by countless clinicians. Theory and methods have evolved apace, reflecting new knowledge on the process of behavior change, a growing body of outcome research, and the development of new applications within and beyond the addictions field. Extensively rewritten, this revised and expanded second edition now brings MI practitioners and trainees fully up to date. William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick explain how to work through ambivalence to facilitate change, present detailed guidelines for using their approach, and reflect on the process of learning MI. Chapters contributed by other leading experts then address such special topics as MI and the stages-of-change model, applications in medical, public health, and criminal justice settings, and using the approach with groups, couples, and adolescents.
Customer Reviews:
Good in a litigious society.......2007-05-22
This book is a compilation of papers written by over 35 professors outstanding in their field. They all offer different views of MI but basically they are in accord as to its effectiveness. What struck me as being the single greatest aspect of this technique is that there is no way that the patient can misconstrue what you are saying, as you are basically reflecting back the very ideas the patient is using for the patient to examine. In this way, the possibility for lawsuits is greatly minimized. And this is a good technique for the new therapist unsure of themselves.
-the author of the book The Vampire Tom Bartek
Great book for counselors or perspective counselors........2007-05-16
This is a terrific book on counseling. Insightful, practical and an easy read! Contains excellent examples.
A Must Read.......2007-03-23
Excellent resourse for the person interested in helping others in a host of different treatment settings. For people in the helping fields, this technique offers new ways of viewing treatment resistance, goal ambivalence, and goal achievement. In utilizing this technique, we enable the client/consumer to be able to formulate plans and goals for themselves in the future, returning them to an increased level of functioning in the community. The adaption of MI in various treatment settings with divergent clients has long been awaited.
Motivational Interviewing.......2007-02-09
This is a good book to read and keep. The chapters are easy to read because they are not too long. The information is easy to grasp, apply and retain. I definitely recommend this book.
Very helpful instructional manual.......2007-01-09
I love this book. The second edition is a big improvement over the first as it makes the MI approach more generic (as it should be) and less tied specifically to substance abuse. I regularly use this book when teaching beginning therapy skills to doctoral students in clinical psychology, but it's not just a book for beginners. What I like is the way Miller & Rollnick spend a lot of time talking about generic skills fundamental to any healthy therapeutic relationship -- and especially their discussions about different types of reflective listening and dealing with resistance. The MI approach is especially helpful in dealing with clients who are struggling with ambivalence about their problems (or about being in therapy) -- which happens with great frequency in any practice (not just with substance abusers or court-ordered clients). I wish I had had this book 30 years ago when I was starting out as a therapist. I love teaching from it because I can still pick out gems even now. MI fits well with all sorts of other psychotherapy techniques, including client-centered, cognitive-behavioral, and strategic/structural.

Customer Reviews:
Preparation, Preparation, Preparation..........2007-08-23
Well written, easy to use, practical guide to questions you are very likely to hear in your interview. While the claim to provide the "best answers" may be arguable, the questions were on target and the ideas for how one might answer them were excellent. This book is great for those who hire as well as for those who are seeking employment. Worth the investment.
I'm working!.......2007-02-11
I have been out of work for a little over a year, and all my previous employments were temp jobs so I needed to brush up on everything. After reading the reviews I decided to go with this book.
I have never regretted it since and have recommended it to close friends. I kid you not when I say that during my interview I ended up interviewing the interviewer. Before the interview I did what the book said and read up on the company and found out that they had won several awards which I later mentioned to her. Apparently none of the other candidates did their homework b/c she acted impressed over that. I asked questions concerning downsizing, why she chose to work there, how long has she worked for the company, her management style. She was very friendly and very talkative...ended up telling me about her daughter in college, her background (which I found out we were raised in the same country!), etc. Making sure not to discuss salary/benefits with her (something the book recommended and I stuck to until I met the VP who gave me what I asked for) And eventhough I had to be tested after speaking to her, I was confident enough to ask her questions during the test and be honest about things I didn't understand. She even showed me the tricks behind the test! Something the recruiter said was not done with anyone else. The only thing I wished I had done was my homework in salary negotiating. So for those of you out there, do your homework on salary and negotiating tips before the interview! Do get this book for you high school/college grad. It's easy to read, down-to-earth, and for today's job hunters.
Just Okay.......2007-01-28
There was some good information in this book. However, there's very little new infromation that's not available for free somewhere else. What's you're paying for is mainly the time it took the author to compile the infromation gathered from numerous places. Most people serious enough to buy a book like this probably won't have a problem finding work anyway.
Land your dream job!.......2006-11-24
I bought this book because I was told of pending layoffs due to selling a division of the company. I had been there almost 5 years, so I definitely needed to get a review on my Interviewing skills.
This book prepared me with questions that might be asked, possible answers and questions that cannot be asked. I especially liked Ch.10 "Stress Questions" These type questions really make you think about your career, where you've been and where you intend to go. Answers to these questions, I feel, enable you to elaborate on other questions that might be asked during an interview. It really is about the applicant as a whole and what you have to offer that company.
This book helped me land my dream job (seriously) and I hope it does the same for you!
A good book to review when looking for a job.......2006-11-21
If for nothing else the books forces you to review your work history and have every bit of information about your self available.
The numerous questions will help anyone become more familiar with one's self and be able to answer most any question without hesitation. This book does not have ALL the questions, but just reading through it and answering the ones present forces you to be aware of all your experience (good and bad). Now that you know your "work experience" you can turn it into a resume and better sell your self.
The book was a definite help for me.

User friendly. One textbook you're liable to keep........2003-01-16
Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy.
This work by the Sommers-Flanagan duo represents an excellent addition to the instructional literature on the fine art of interviewing. They use an wonderful blend of humor, humanity, sound advice and counsel, and theory.
Highly recommended.

A pleasure doing business with!.......2007-10-16
This book arrived during the exact time period that was quoted and in the exact condition that was expected. The book was wrapped and packaged securely.
The arrival of my book.......2007-09-30
I liked the fact that the product came in quickly but it was placed in a small box that didn't fix the size of the book so it was folded over bubble wrap. When I got it, the book was bent and even though it was placed so that it wouldn't bent, becasue the box was smaller than the product and folded, it did bend and affected the pages and cover. Next time, if you could please place the product in a box that fit.
Intentional Intervieweing and Counseling.......2007-09-25
This book did not arrive on time and when it did arrive was in a horrible condition. I was in the process of requesting a refund when the book arrived.
Great Service.......2007-09-14
I was very pleased at how quickly I received my shipment. It arrived sooner than the estimated arrival dates. The order was also in great condition.
Thank You Amazon

Customer Reviews:
OK for tech exams - but there are some errors in it .......2007-09-30
Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.
Really GOOD.......2007-08-16
I BELIEVE THAT THIS BOOK WILL GIVE SOME AID ABOUT MY INTTENTIONS, ITS REALLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. QUICKLY LOOKING A HAVE FOUND ANY ANSWERS THAT WILL HELP ME ON A MOCK INTERVIEW. THANK YOU [...] ABOUT THE SHIPPING??? JUST ON TIME, MY PRODUCT WAS THERE ON MY HOUSE, WITH NO ROWS FOR PAYMENT, NO BUSY PARKING, ON THE CONFORT OF MY HOME. NEXT TIME I WILL LOOK FIRST ON [...]
Very helpful.......2007-01-17
If you want to pass your interview in one of those big major airlines, this book is for you.
As a reference book to mantain you in shape it's Ok too.
All pilots must have !.......2007-01-12
All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.
Exactly what I expected !!!.......2006-11-07
Marvellous edition with tons of technical questions nicely ordered by topic. A must have for every (commercial or private) pilot even for people not looking to go on interview straight-away, but just want to brush up their knowledge.
3 remarks:
- I have to agree with the previous reviews on the fact that there are plenty of errors, the least the author/publisher could do, is build a list with errata.
- some more illustrations would have been nice - but it is no reason for not buying this book
- pitty there's no CD with a quiz of the covered questions, but then again: it's a book (not software).

Customer Reviews:
Great resource!!.......2007-08-14
A friend, who is working on her LCSW clinical hours, recommended this book. I am an MSW student and while studying methods for doing psychosocial assessments this book was a very valuable resource. It has words and phrases that are clear, succinct, and convey meaning quickly and clearly.
I highly recommend it for all MSW students, social workers, and LCSW's.
A new clinicians best friend........2007-07-29
This book has been extremely helpful, especially when I'm writing progress notes. I highly recommend it.
Excellent resource.......2006-11-12
A great companion for the newly practicing therapist to "get in the groove." An ongoing resource when one's flow of words is just dribbling rather than flowing. Preferred the ease of the earlier editions' spiral bounding - but the CD has been adequate compensation.
Clinicians Thesaurus.......2006-11-11
The best book a therapist could buy for documentation purposes and clinical summary purposes!
Great help for clinical reports.......2006-11-06
This book is really helpful when learning to assess clients and write clinical reports. It was well worth the money.

Absolutely Worth Reading.......2007-08-23
The book was full of practical and extremely useful examples. Easy to pick up and put down and digest in short bursts. Easy to focus on specific areas of concern -- not a textbook. It generated ideas and provided insight about how the interviewer thinks... well worth the investment.
Informative book, got a job right after reading it..........2007-03-08
Excellent book. The information was there and straight to the point. It was an easy read. I don't know if you will be able to use all the questions (because I couldn't) but I was able to find a good number of them. Also, had an interview with a major software company (guess) and they were very impressed with the questions. Went on to the 2nd round interviews. :-)
A must have that'll give you an edge.......2006-12-09
In the world of job-seekers there are job-interviewers. Most of job-interviewers are bad because:
1) They were summoned at the last minute to interview you and didn't even read your resume
2) They have no interviewing skills and have no ideas about (a) what they are looking for and (b) how to ask questions
3) They just don't care of being good at what they do since the odds are in their favors and that there are no negative ramifications if they're not as good as they can be.
This make a lot of job-interviewers throw questions at you. Just because they don't know what to ask or simply because it is intellectually more difficult to come up with a good probing questions.
I have some of these guys ask if you have a question and then ask again and again and again.
They are putting the burden on you to talk, but at the same they just surrender the control of the interview to you. This is your opportunity to shine, and this excellent book will help you do just that.
The more time you spend reading and memorizing questions, the better your interviewing skills will be. The structure of the book is excellent and the way questions are structure makes it easy to use the book as a reference even when you're taking an interview on the phone!
This gave me an edge, and I've impressed more than one interviewers with my questions. If you do your research ahead of time and demonstrate that you have a good the knowledge of the company and its industry, there's no reason for you not to perform well.
A must have in your personal library.
A lot of fluff.......2005-08-13
Much of this book is fluff. He spends a lot of ink on things a reasonable person would never say or do at an interview. Also, many of his "serious" question seem ill advised.
Extremely Practical.......2005-08-09
I was waiting in line at the college bookstore, (buying a textbook), and this book was prominently featured. I thumbed through and was impressed at the straightforwardness of the questions. Making a list from these questions will, no doubt, give the impression on an interview, that you are focused, serious and organized. A worthwhile investment.

Good examples.......2007-10-21
This was a good book that gave good examples for each strategy and method used. It gave plenty of work to discuss with fellow classmates wich would be helpful to understand the material better.
Insightful and useful book, but lacks multi-cultural flavor........1998-12-11
Okuns's book provides a strong counseling model that practioners can follow. I found her exercises and examples particularly helpful and seemingly useful. However, her model is based on an affective,western;client-centered model. Many of the techniques suggested would be difficult to apply to clients of diverse populations. If you decide to buy this book, consider purchasing her other book, Understanding Diverse Families:What Practioners Need to Know.
Book Description
The tenth edition contains 165 quantitative questions collected from actual job interviews in investment banking, investment management, and options trading. very helpful.......2007-10-02
I think this book is very useful even just from the perspective of finding something interesting to do when you get bored. Not mention it indeed provides a lot of relevant information about how to answer the interview quesionts.
Decent.......2007-07-08
This is a decent book. I only looked at a couple of chapters on analytical and statistics problems. Some of the problems marked "hard" were quite interesting and challenging. Quite a few of the problems were trivial and repetitive though. The solutions are generally well written, though sometimes a bit too verbose (for my taste).
Overall, not a bad investment if you are preparing for job interviews which may expect you to crack a few puzzles.
Great interview prep. book.......2007-04-23
This is a great book preparing for an interview, with lots of logic puzzles, stat. and derivatives questions, solid interview advice and some funny stories. The logic questions range from fairly straightforward and simple to more advanced, and I think most people will at least find a couple of them challenging.
Great fun!
Nice book.......2007-02-27
I used this book to prepare for some Wall Street interviews, and I found the questions on Black-Scholes pretty useful to orient my study of Mathematical Finance (my background is in Theoretical Physics, so I used this book to get an idea of the kind of things I would have to learn to work as a Quant). The puzzles and brain teasers in the book were quite straightforward, but I guess one cannot ask too difficult a question in an interview, so they may be in keeping with the kind of questions one typically gets asked.
Interesting book.......2007-01-18
Some of the problems I solved in high school in Russia, some are new and interesting. Some are deep finance oriented and require significant background.
Would be 5 if had a hard cover
