5 out of 5 stars The most valuable business book I own!.......2007-08-14

I am very happy that I found and studied this book when I did. After a few years of consulting this book helped make my business more successful, confirmed ideas that took years to develop and gave a clear plan of action and procedures.

If i may borrow from Alan...

If you really want to be a million dollar consultant and are missing just that one little piece, you need to read this. 4 out of 5 stars Helpful advice.......2007-05-07

In the author's own words, he goes to conferences and what-not, hoping to find just 1% of the material that helps him succeed - those hidden gems of knowledge. Is everything he talks about going to be 100% applicable and timely for you? No, but there's certainly enough "gems" in the book to steer you in the right direction. The discussions on delivering value as opposed to time are priceless.

3 out of 5 stars Decent..........2007-04-06

Honestly, I was not terribly impressed with this book. After the first couple chapters, I nearly quit reading it. Part 1 of the book (the first 5 chapters) is written in such abstract terms that it was completely worthless to me. For instance, in a section on goal-setting he quotes the following as one of the best goals he has heard from a consultant, "We will undertake consulting assignments that result in direct contribution to the client's profitability as measured by quarterly results." Does this really tell anybody what the consultant actually offers to/does for a client? Quite frankly, if somebody ever approached me as a prospect and said something so bland and vague to me as an effort toward getting my business, I'd tune them out right from the get-go.

That said, he does give some decent advice for marketing (which is really the most important thing about any business, as we all learn at some point). He gives good information about how to successfully integrate speaking and writing into your business as both marketing tools and profit centers.

I'd say it's probably worth a read, but I'm really surprised by how many people rave about it so strongly.

4 out of 5 stars A good read reguardless.......2007-02-12

There is a ton of information in this. If you want to be a consultant or think you may need one, read it, cover to cover. Might read tween the lines a bit :-). F&P Tech /consulting services

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars If you really want to make money in the financial service ind........2007-05-24

Write a book marketed towards struggling financial advisors which is just a commercial for your registered/trademarked strategies and coaching services. The authors should have given the book away rather than trying to disguise their services as a way to build a multi million dollar advisory business. Neither author has any experience as financial advisor. There are better books written by actual advisors in the business.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Practice Management Tool.......2006-11-10

This book was one I purchased only on the off chance that it would help build a practice as the title is a little sensational. However this book is helpful for all financial planning practices regardless of size and stage of development.

5 out of 5 stars How To Build a Financial Services Powerhouse.......2006-07-03

Katherine and Peter Vessenes have a unique perspective on how to build a top financial services practice today. With the current emphasis on efficiency in the workplace, the Vessenes take this to another level for financial professionals. The combination of practical and theoretical suggestions make this a must read for any financial professional who wants to supercharge their practice. This reader found the numerous stories of practitioners around the country of particular interest. It would be even more helpful if the authors would divulge who the stories referenced rather than using imaginary names. Despite this, the book was very well written with various sections authored by one or the other of the Vessenes. Their insight into the financial services industry is very refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Want To Launch Your Business - Read This Book!.......2006-01-21

I work with financial advisors for a living and I have seen some that are successful and many that are not. This book will help any advisor who is struggling to take off, or any advisor looking to take their business to another level. The book is full of practical advice that you can use immediately. Don't kick yourself tomorrow for not buying this book today!

4 out of 5 stars Some pretty good ideas.......2005-09-20

Like many books that promise to "take you to the next level" this one is just slightly disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the book is pretty darn good but not jammed with all kinds of breakthrough ideas that nobody's ever presented before (as some reviewers claim). The book focuses on building a team atmosphere and moving away from a business that is based solely on one person; "the star". The book talks about the "No Sell-Sale"TM that is supposed to help you transform prospects into clients seamlessly. It's not bad but it's not great either. It pretty much reminds me of the training I received as an entry level life insurance salesperson. The key to the system is to generate referrals and the book has some good advice on the subject. The book does provide a vast appendix filled with template letters and flowcharts. It seems like I'm being a little harsh so let me finish by saying that I would still recommend this book to any financial advisor. There are plenty of ideas to warrant the very small purchase price. In fact you'd have to be pretty high on yourself not to get some great stuff out of this effort.

5 out of 5 stars This book is straight ACES all the way through!.......2006-12-15

If you're a poker player looking for another purely instructional manual --- save your money here. If on the other hand you'd like entertaining stories of today's & yesterday's most successful pros and what made them that way then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It gives profiles on some of poker's all-time best players past and present while managing to deliver the "nuts" using specific examples from their successes at the table. The main message of this book is that there are as many ways and strategies to win at poker --- particularly Texas Hold 'Em as there are players, REALLY! The best lesson it gave me was to figure out which of these many players' "style" of play best fit my own and go to school learning. Additionally, at the end it gives brief summaries of pokers most popular games along with a poker dictionary of terms. I really think the beginner as well as the expert can take something valuable away from these pages.... The profiles of the players are every bit as informative as they are entertaining and insightful. So pick up this book and get a "read" on some of the games greats to improve your game!

3 out of 5 stars million dollar strategies...not.......2005-10-18

It was an entertaining read but it just did not deliver on its titles promise of providing any "million-dollar strategies". It also has a very dis-jointed feel to it-start, stop, start again. Well, after reading it through, that minor annoyance makes sense. This is a collection of articles written by the two authors put into book form so the flow is uneven and a little distracting. I enjoyed reading about the great gamblers and poker players, but it just left me a little disappointed having bought it with different expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bios ..........2005-08-23

This is a great poker book. But be warned, it is not a book on poker strategies. It is, however, a wonderful book with each chapter detailing a bio on a different poker player(s). The read does provide a glimpse into the style of the different players. But it does not go into great depths on specific strategies and so on. This suits me just fine considering that there is now a mountain of poker books covering strategies.

So if you're interested in getting a broad feel for how some of the elite poker players slugged their way to the top, this is an excellent book. If you enjoy literature and poker, this will make an excellent read when you need to pass the time (e.g., airplane ride, can't sleep at night, etc.) ...

5 out of 5 stars Lords of the Felt. .......2005-08-06

One of the consequences of the big poker craze is that books are coming out a million on the subject. Aces and Kings is a perfect example of the fad, but it bares none of the hallmarks of quick production. The prose reads very much like what one would expect to find in a mainstream magazine; which is not surprising as several of these chapters appeared first in places like Cigar Aficionado. The book, on the whole, is quality and chocked full of details. It's main focus concerns those who try to make an easy living in the hardest way possible, i.e. the professional players. With ESPN and The Travel Channel, they have ever-increasingly become the focus of the public's attention. Aces and Kings attempts to inform readers about the poker life by analyzing its biggest names and figures. Many of these cardsharps have become celebrities overnight. Their mini-biographies are extremely interesting and are told over the course of 15 chapters. Three of them, "Web Kids," "The Women of Poker," and "The New Superstars" concern, groupings of players rather than individuals. In this, I think that they made one major error because Daniel Negreanu deserves a chapter of his own. That guy's personality is big enough to fill a warehouse.

Nearly all of the pros have lives that make for good reading, but, in my opinion, the most fascinating entry was the one concerning Chris Ferguson. In case you might not recognize his name, he was The World Series of Poker 2000 champion and is one of the most recognizable players in the game due to his Black Bart cowboy hat and huge Oakley shades. We discover that his appearance, just like every aspect of his persona, was carefully calculated in the hopes of discouraging his opponents from perceiving just how mathematically oriented he actually is. Ferguson has a PhD in mathematics/artificial intelligence from UCLA, and has spent years forging his probability based approach to the game. His huge black binders are brimming with statistics and determine how he will play hands and scenarios. The results, as we know, have been fantastic. What impressed me most about him was that he went on a severe cold streak in 2002, but did not get discouraged as he "recognized a statistical deviation" when he saw one. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and, even if you are not a huge poker fan, the plots within are about as interesting as something written by Nicholas Pileggi.

5 out of 5 stars Skill Is The Name of the Game........2005-07-20

Michael writes exclusively about gambling for four magazines and Brad writes about poker for the Wall Street Journal. Both live in Brooklyn, and enjoy card playing. Poker is a game of suble deceptions. and the most skilled players come out the winners.

I know that in the game of poker it is the high stakes the gambler aims for. Me, I settle for computer Solitaire. But Black Jack takes the cake!

- how to listen effectively to your prospects and customers
- understand why people have objections and how to move the conversation forward

This book isn't about the "volume" of information in it, but rather it is a book filled of quality tried-and-true: insights, techniques, and wisdom.

I end with a quote from Dr. Joe Rubino: "What you expect is what you get!"

Great book. Great reading. And most importantly, it has been tested in the field by the author. Highly recommended only because it is working for me too.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the usual poker how-to.......2006-03-02

_Play Poker to Win_ isn't the usual kind of poker strategy book. It's about 60% anecdotes (the anecdotes are the usual mix of hilarious Slimmagisms; two or three are repeated from _Amarillo Slim in a World of Fat People_, because they are worth repeating) and 40% poker advice. The poker advice is often over-specific. The reader has to pick through to find the useful advice, and then thoroughly analyze what Slim is saying, working out how to generalize it enough to actually use it. You definitely would not want to use this as your first or only poker reference.

This is offset by the occasional gem of insider thinking, and the exposure to the way Slim thinks about hands and games. If you just read this book with a lively and open mind, you may very well get infected with a winner's attitude, which is worth far more than the price of the book.

Besides, any book that casually calls Former World Champion Phil Hellmuth, Jr. "soft as butter at the poker table. ... only half kidding[ly] ..." (p. 154) has got to be worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars The book that got me excited about poker..........1999-01-20

Play Poker to Win is filled with many of Amarillo Slim's famous anecdotes, as well as some advice about the game itself. You can go into this book not understanding much about the game, and after 1 or 2 reads, play a decent hand.

Not great if you are looking for a book on playing poker really, but good if you want poker humour, and action.

5 out of 5 stars Every consultant should own this book!.......2004-01-10

I have used the advice put forth in this book with great success. I now sell my services according to value, no longer by the hour. Also based on the tips in this book I sell projects which get a minimum of 50% of the fee up front. Further, my projects don't get cancelled. Buy this book. It will help you grow your practice.

I had had a consulting business for quite a few years and had more work then I could handle, yet was not making as good of an income as I knew I could. Then I read this book. The strategies I learned not only helped me increase my income, but also freed up more time and allowed me to really enjoy what I do once again.
