5 out of 5 stars Vista Inside Out.......2007-10-05

Windows Vista Inside Out
I am in my early 70s and can still remember that a farmer whom I worked for at the time would not buy a tractor, because it would be less cost effective than the horses he used. I found this book very useful, practical and easy to understand. It tells you more than you will ever want to know, however, where is the glossary? With the overwhelming quantity of acronyms, though well explained it would from time to time be handy to be able to just look the meaning up in a list rather then to have to back track in the text. Great book nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars Great Refererence.......2007-09-26

New Vista users here is a great Reference and help with the little problems..A bit bulky but covers it all.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Follow-Up to Windows XP Inside Out.......2007-09-12

If you enjoyed Windows XP Inside Out, you'll also enjoy this book. Its full of helpful hints.

If you're a beginner, I wouldn't suggest this book. If you're an advanced user you probably will learn a few new things. But if you're an intermediate user this is right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2007-09-10

Perfect Condition. CD is a great help too. Great tool for intermediate users.

5 out of 5 stars Advantage: Comes with eBook version.......2007-08-28

Vista isn't very hard to use, but there are little things that I need to look up on occasion. I love the fact that I can install the eBook on my computer so I always have it with me. (I use a TabletPC and carry it to home and work and on trips.) Having all this information available to me at all times is great. People ask me a question (I do tech support), I search for the answer, tell them what they need to know, and they think I know everything. Having it on the computer makes all the difference to me.

Awesome, Easily understood, beginners to experts, Lots of unique ways to make processes easier and simpler. Well worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Microsoft excel 2003 bible.......2007-05-14

This is a good reference, especially helpful is the CD included. It would be helpful to someone just learning excel, but also goes into some depth of higher level functions.

5 out of 5 stars Excell Bible extremly useful........2007-05-14

I had went to an $149 course on Excel and the teacher kept praising this book (they were trying to sell you one on the spot)and it is very useful.
The course owners shot themselves in the foot, though..I was also planning to take an Access course, but instead just bought the Access Bible.
The vendor shipped quickly and the book was in new condition as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for Excel 2003!!!.......2007-05-13

If your like me and own both Office 2003 and are dabbling in Office 2007, then you want to hold on to this reference for Excel 03 just in case. Like all his books this is an accurate, concise, extensive reference tool for the beginner as well as the advanced user. This is my fourth excel book by Mr. Walkenbach and they are all of equal caliber. They all contain general background information as well as information dealing with other programming areas of excel (so that even if you only purchase a book like the VBA programming guide, you will still learn about macro programming and other general excel functions). Like all his books, this one gives the user a complete library of useful and professional approaches towards working with and solving excel problems. Good Job Mr Walkenbach!

4 out of 5 stars Bible Study.......2007-03-27

This is my second MS-related Bible purchase and I really do love the series. The Excel Bible gets a little technical and somewhat over my head as a slightly above-average user, but it's really good information. I always shyed away from macros, but it (and a few experts) really helped me write macros for a file that's being distributed company-wide.

Just like a real Bible, I just want to be able to reference it when I need to.

5 out of 5 stars For experienced Users.......2007-08-23

Perfect reference manual for the experienced IT person. As always, Microsoft has kept up the quality of their Resource Kits.

Beginners, or light users, this book is not for you. It is not a learning tool, rather it is a wonderful, complete, reference guide.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty solid content with an odd flow.......2007-06-27

The Vista RK is full of good information that can be difficult to find in other places. However, it being a MS book, some of the content comes directly from MS whitepapers. The deployment content seems very disorganized although most of the needed content is included in one section or another. Still a very useful resource for anyone supporting Vista.

5 out of 5 stars VISTA Resource Kit - Book.......2007-06-13

One of the first good, early reference manuals for Windows VISTA which I purchased in May, 2007. There will be better ones, perhaps, after more of the problems in VISTA become known. As of now, this is the best book out there.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Enterprise implementations, not for home or enthusiasts.......2007-05-29

The Vista Resource Kit is a decent resource for Enterprise Class customers. Unfortunately, past product resource kits did not focus entirely upon the enterprise distribution functionality, and could be used to benefit the management of stand-alone systems.

Much of this edition requires the use of Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise editions of Vista. Implementation focuses upon group policy management in lieu of more detail access to registry settings, as was done in prior resource kits.

It is still a valuable tool, but if you are an individual user looking for detail insight of the funtionality and control of the Vista operating system, you will need to look for another book.

5 out of 5 stars Dig in.......2007-05-25

Vista Resource Kit isn't exactly the kind of book you sit down and read cover to cover. There are better books for that purpose. What this book is good for - and I'll risk saying exceptional for - is digging in to exactly how things wrok. Great resource for research!

Tips and tricks for getting the most out of Microsoft's newest operating system, Vista. Aimed at the novice to intermediate level user, Secrets illustrates hidden features and shortcuts in the software that may not be entirely intuitive to those not used to poking around into every nook and cranny of their computer's software.

I am currently using this manual and although not finished yet, I find interesting secrets to Vista. Some which are not included in the "Missing Manual" book. It is written in language that is not technical but easy to understand. So far I have found the book that has taught me instructive information that I can understand and easily follow.I find myself more efficient at using Vista

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Vista book.......2007-09-03

I was introduced to this book while listening to the Windows Weekly (TWiT) podcast with hosts Leo LaPorte and Paul Thurrott. Both Paul and Leo talk reference this book on occasion in the podcast. So I decided to purchase it and give it a read. This book is fantastic. Even though it is a book on Windows, it is very good to read. This book isn't necessarily designed for the absolute beginner. It is for the user that wishes to get a little closer and under the hood of Windows Vista. I do recommend this book those of you who wish to understand Vista more. I have learned a lot about Vista I didn't already know. There is a wealth of knowledge in this book. In fact, it has inspired me to purchase an additional book and seek a Vista certification.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic!.......2007-08-27

If the information you are looking for does not appear in this book it probably does not exist. A monumental work.

2 out of 5 stars Ouch... not the book I was expecting.......2007-07-31

I bought this book because of Brian Livingston. I read his weekly ezine called Windows Secrets and have learned a lot from him and his cohorts over the years. After installing Windows' Vista I wanted to do so much more with it so I bought the book. After reading the entire thing, not one of my questions was answered. If you are looking for a book that just gives the highlights of Vista, buy the book. If your looking for a book that reveals the secrets of the techy side of things, keep looking.

Book Description

Windows Vista is Microsoft's most important software release in more than a decade. It offers users an abundance of new and upgraded features that were more than five years in the making: a gorgeous, glass-like visual overhaul; superior searching and organization tools; a multimedia and collaboration suite; and above all, a massive, top-to-bottom security-shield overhaul. There's scarcely a single feature of the older versions of Windows that hasn't been tweaked, overhauled, or replaced entirely.

But when users first encounter this beautiful new operating system, there's gonna be a whole lotta head-scratchin', starting with trying to figure out which of the five versions of Vista is installed on the PC (Home, Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate).

Thankfully, Windows Vista: The Missing Manual offers coverage of all five versions. Like its predecessors, this book from New York Times columnist, bestselling author, and Missing Manuals creator David Pogue illuminates its subject with technical insight, plenty of wit, and hardnosed objectivity for beginners, veteran standalone PC users, and those who know their way around a network. Readers will learn how to:

This jargon-free guide explains Vista's features clearly and thoroughly, revealing which work well and which don't. It's the book that should have been in the box!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars fluff and hype.......2007-10-18

I found this book nearly useless. The sections I read befor giving up seemed to contain less information than is available from the WIN VISTA help files and its written in a breathless gushing style. The author just fawns over Microsoft. Everything about Vista is amazing, wonderful and brilliant (NOT). There is very little trouble shooting information.

Use the help files and online tutorials and save your money

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, easy to understand.......2007-10-11

Just what the doctor ordered. Detailed enough to figure out anything the regular PC user might want to do, but written so anyone can understand it. I have the Windows XP Missing Manual also and thought it was great. It won't disappoint you.

5 out of 5 stars Predictably Good.......2007-09-18

David Pogue can be counted on to do a thorough and readable handbook of whatever Operating System is new and is in need of comprehensive instruction. His ongoing series title of "The Missing Manual" is accurate. (He has similar books for Mac Operating Systems). Computers now come with precious little in new owner information and most users need more. There will be many new books on the Vista Operating System, but you can count on this author to give you what you need.

5 out of 5 stars Sandy.......2007-08-23

This is an absolute must have manual for Vista users. It is so well written and so well organized that you can find anything in seconds from the index or appendix. It covered some issues that I couldn't even find on the Web! I wish all tech manuals were written this well and were this easy to use!

4 out of 5 stars Windows Vista: The Missing Manual.......2007-08-23

Lots of info in this book. I have not yet bought Vista, but am expecting to very shortly. I certainly looking forward to trying some of the things in this book. Well written, and easy to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Good for pretty graphics, bad for anything else.......2007-01-15

I have to say I was dissapointed in this book; not because of *how* the material was presented, but because of the *type* of material presented. It says "the definitive guide to the Win32 API" printed right on the cover, but the selection of topics seems limited only to those which deal with output and presentation (text, fonts, graphics, bitmaps, sounds, etc). Personally, i was looking almost exclusivly for the more "under-the-hood" API functions, which almost no mention is made of.
For example, there is no mention of memory management, manipulating files on the hard disk, serial and parallel ports usage, processes, debugging/kernel, and console-mode functions, just to name a few. Multi-threading, DLL files, and TCP/IP are included at the end, seemlingly only as an afterthought. To give you an idea, the chapter about the "Palette Manager" is over 170 pages long; the chapter on DLL's is only 30.
Also slightly annoying was the large amount of printed code in the book (my personal pet peeve). Many times, you'll find complete programs that span ten or more pages, with little explanation to accompany them. This seems completly unnecessary, especially considering the stout size of the book to begin with (1500 pages!), and the fact that all the code is included on the CD anyway.
So if you're looking for a in-depth book about the more 'visual' aspects of Windows, then this could be your book. But if you're looking for more low-level stuff going on behind the scenes, not even one page of this will be worth the shipping you'll pay.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent programmer's guide to the beast that is Windows.......2007-01-12

This is truly a great reference book for all 'real' programmers that are capable of coding in c /c++, as it is assumed that you already know how to do so. There is no VB crap and other such slow and useless languages mentioned. The shear simplicity and power of low-level programming is demonstrated with clear concise examples that compile to 32k executables that are NOT dependant on 3rd-party dll and VB runtimes etc. Only assembly can produce tighter code. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is serious about programming on the Windows platform. If you want a point and click solution - go use VB like the rest of the fools only to be disappointed in the end when you want to do anything outside of the box.

5 out of 5 stars Best Windows Programming Book.......2006-11-18

I have been developing Windows since 1992. He has continued to update this book for almost two decades. Before MFC, before Visual-pick-a-language.

No book will let you understand Windows better than this. Forget MFC, and all the Microsoft programming wizars garbage. This tells you how the OS functions, how it ticks, and you have a fundamental understanding of the OS.

This should be mandatory reading for all computer science kids. It lets you understand how event driven systems work, how GUIs work. Suprisingly, things have not changed THAT much since Windows 1.0. Look at all his old books and you will see this.

I have started to program in windows and was hoping this book whould help me with it. Chould I be more wrong?

The wrighter sure know how to wright mutch about little, you can read 1 A4 without problems without even see any code, atleast thats what it fellt like. The only thing you actually can use this book to, are as a reference. But then you might consider to check out hte win32 api bible for windows 95 instead, dont bi chocked that it is for win95, it is no big difference and both use C ( not C++), the only difference are that they use cod as example, this guy doesnt

5 out of 5 stars This is my best Win32 reference book.......2006-11-03

This book is considered as the windows programming bible by many. Sure, you can build applications without all this knowledge with frameworks such as MFC but if you are looking to build a Windows program that do exactly what you want, there is no workaround a deep Win32 API knowledge. This book is a must for all Windows programmers bookshelf.

Something you need to know before purchasing this book is that it is very unlikely that the author will update this gem one more time as Microsoft is slowly phasing out the Win32 API in favor of the [...] and this will be even more real when Vista comes out. However, since there is a huge codebase of existing Win32 programs, the Win32 API will certainly stay around for a long long time. This book is simply the best for learning Win32 programming. I still refer to it very frequently. If you are looking for a reference book on Win32 API, this is the one you were looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Excel for the beginner.......2007-08-14

My son-in-law owns two gas stations and all of his records are on Excel spread sheets. I wanted to help him so I needed to learn how to operate the Excel sheets. He is running the older computers which have the 2003 version on them. I had to get a book about the 2003 version. I did buy this book and I read it from cover to cover. I was surprised at how much Excel could do. Once you learn the basics of Excel you can perform most of the functions in simple steps. You can do almost anything on a spread sheet. I kept going back to the book to look up procedures as I got into more complicated procedures. The book has a good table of contents. I even look up some of the words so I could better understand what the program required me to do to get the right results. Later I looked at the Microsoft manual for Excel. The manual has the same information but it seems more technical and it has a minimal table of contents. The Dummies book was more user friendly and it was easier to use as a reference to answer a simple question.

I had just bought a new computer with Vista as the o/s. Since I knew nothing about Vista and in the world of computers I am a dummy I immediately thought of this series "for Dummies" books.
I puchased it from Amazon and it was delivered within the week...even before the computer which I bought arrived. The book is very useful and Amazon is great.

5 out of 5 stars This dummy appreciates plain talk.......2007-09-18

As with all the "Dummies" books I like the way Andy separates the wheat from the chaff by telling you up front which things you really need to know, and which things are nice to know but not necessary. He presents the information in easy to understand plain language and includes enough humor to keep it interesting. I find myself reading on screen help and then referring to "Dummies" to see what it really said.

Book Description

PowerShell replaces cobbled-together assemblies of third-party management tools with an elegant programming language and a powerful scripting shell for the Windows environment. In the tradition of Manning's ground breaking "In Action" series, this book comes from right from the source. Written by Bruce Payette, one of principal creators of PowerShell, Windows PowerShell in Action shows you how to build scripts and utilities to automate system tasks or create powerful system management tools to handle the day-to-day tasks that drive a Windows administrator's life. Because it's based on the .NET platform, PowerShell is also a powerful tool for developers and power users.

Windows PowerShell in Action was written by Bruce Payette, one of the founding members of the Windows PowerShell team, co-designer of the PowerShell language and the principal author of the PowerShell language implementation. The book enables you to get the most out of the PowerShell environment. Using many examples, both small and large, this book illustrates the features of the language and environment and shows how to compose those features into solutions, quickly and effectively.

This book is designed for anyone who wants to learn PowerShell and use it well. Rather than simply being a book of recipes to read and apply, this book gives you the deep knowledge about how PowerShell works and how to apply it.

4 out of 5 stars Geeked Out on Powershell.......2007-08-06

As a both a Windows and Linux system administrator, this book overall made me frustrated initially, as I really don't want to delve into the introspective nature of compiler design miracles, but rather have a practical book on applying PowerShell. Nevertheless, once I sat down and reviewed key chapters, I was able to learn how to better utilize Powershell and apply it to some chores relating to the nature of system administration.

One of the things I high agree with another reviewer is that the book does indeed delve too much into the "gears and cogs" of Powershell, and many times too much. Sometimes we delve into how behind the scenes, the language takes measures to behave like any other language or shell, and we're scratching our heads, why did I have to understand what I always knew to work and behave. Good example is page 62 on string expansion, where once something is assigned is doesn't changed when accessed. Like that's how everything is suppose to work. Though, then he mentions how to override the behavior, but never drops any code examples for that side note.

Though this book seems more oriented to software developers, rather than system administrators, I would still recommend this book, as you can become really well versed in the Powershell and understand its advantages as it relates to the .NET platform on the recent Windows OSes.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly a Winner.......2007-08-06

Not only does this teach you powershell, it answers all kinds of questions about why Powershell is the way it is, and why certain decisions were made. Ever want to know why we use -eq instead of == ? The answer is in here. This books simply rocks. This book not only shows you how to use Powershell, it teaches you Powershell works, from the inside out. Completely worthwhile. I would highly suggest reading it multiple times, as you learn more and more each time through.

5 out of 5 stars PAGE 205 ... PAGE 205.......2007-07-28

This book gives you the goods and helps you become very productive very fast. As a service ... I'm pointing out that PowerShell is installed in a somewhat crippled state which allows for interactive scripting only. You know, security, security, security.

Most of us, of course want to put the script into a file and execute it and this won't work until you set an 'execution policy'. This information can be found starting on page 205 and further directions on page 451.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Besides that a very good book that stands on it's own. If you've been around the programming track a couple of times you won't need the 'for the absolute beginner' book ... this one will do the trick!

I wish all technical books were written this well.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Make This Your First Purchase.......2007-07-09

Consider this book the Definitive Reference for PowerShell. Written by one of the designers of the PowerShell environment, the author knows all the ins and outs, back-alleys, hidden rooms, and secret handshakes the language offers - and isn't afraid to grab you by the hand and drag you along (like it or not!) for the tour of your life.

Therein, however, is the reason I can't recommend this as your first PowerShell book. The book is very logically planned out, the information very well presented in relatively easy to understand language, there is an abundance of script snippets to demonstrate what is being talked about, and the writing style itself is entertaining to read. But the author knows too much on the subject, and like any proud parent, often "too much information" is given, delving too deep into the gears and cogs of PowerShell and the underlying .NET framework for the (often basic) building block component, which might overwhelm the new PowerShell user, especially if the user does not have programming, let alone scripting, experience.

So although I say don't make this your first purchase, make it your second - and probably your last. Start with an "Introduction" style book (like Microsoft Windows Powershell Programming for the Absolute Beginner) to get used to the complex environment (even if you've only had VBS/JS experience), get comfortable with the basics of the shell, then move up to this title. You'll soon find out that every aspect you thought you knew has much more to the story than you thought, and you'll walk away from this read able to do just about everything you want.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about PowerShell.......2007-05-12

I don't ever remember reading a computer book from cover to cover, but I got hooked on this book and "can't put it down"... Plus, who ever thought that the history of a program could be as interesting as this one is. After all, the book begins by asking "why another shell language?" By the time you are into a few chapters you realize the question should have been "what took you so long?"

The book is peppered with valuable code examples that show off everything from the basics to the most advanced concepts, and the examples are built incrementally so you can see how and why every character in a command line works. Since PowerShell is object oriented, you easily learn why this is important, and how to extract the power of an OO shell.

I've already put PowerShell to work at the office using it for WMI, Active Directory, and file management tasks and have incorporated it into my AutoIT scripts as well. This book was a great help in getting me up to speed as fast as I have.
