Book Description
Information Technology Control and Audit, Second Edition is an excellent introductory textbook for IT auditing. It covers a wide range of topics in the field including the audit process, the legal environment of IT auditing, security and privacy, and much more. This textbook first examines the foundation of IT audit and control, discussing what IT auditing involves and the guidance provided by organizations in dealing with control and auditability issues. It then analyzes the process of audit and review, explores IT governance and control, and discusses the CobiT framework and steps that align IT decisions with business strategy. This volume examines project management processes that ensure that projects are controlled from inception through integration. It continues by addressing auditing IT acquisition and implementation, describing risks and controls as related to the life cycle of application systems. It highlights the purchase and installation of new systems, as well as change management. The next section examines the auditing of IT operations in both standalone and global environments, covering types of IT operation, issues related to specific platforms, risk and control assessment, and audit methods and support tools. The textbook concludes with a review of emerging issues, providing undergraduate and graduate students with a thorough overview of a topic critical to organizational security and integrity.

Not good for the CISA exam.......2007-10-02
I bought this book as an additional material to study for the CISA exam. However it didn't help me with the exam at all. Furthermore, in an attempt to cover many things, it did not cover anything in detail. This book is just an endless recollection of bullet points. On top of that, it misses very sensitive topics like disaster recovery planning.
Useful reference material.......2007-02-02
This book has some material relevant to the CISA examination based on the 2003 content areas, although it is not organized or focused as a CISA examination guide. If you are looking for CISA review material for the test, I would strongly suggest to stick with ISACA's combination of review manual and questions CD. I also searched everywhere for study aids for this grueling test and ended up using ISACA's expensive material, but it proved to be the best choice as I passed the Dec 2006 test.
However, as owner of a copy of this book, I assure you that this is an excellent reference of IT management, planning, implementation, risk assessment and control procedures for anyone in the IT business. Most of the material is still relevant as of 2007.
Finally a usable explanation of controls!.......2006-12-30
Audit is not the most exciting topic in the world, but this no fluff book really sets the standard. The care the authors took is obvious from the start, the table of contents is one of the most detailed I have ever seen, it allows the book to be used as a reference.
My favorite chapter was Quality Management, best job of making quality approachable I have seen to date. My least favorite was Project Management, it seemed to lack the application and lean to theory a bit.
I am not an auditor, but as an auditee, this book really helped me understand how they think. Recommended!
Too thin.......2006-03-24
This is a huge book but spends no more then 1 page on any topic. In my opinion the authors only have financial audit experience and little understanding of IT controls. This book shows the failure of the 'integrated auditor' as the authors are tyring to be IT auditors with little IT experience. They touch on some very good points in a few instances and, in general, the book is decent. The authors do not know much outside of the CISA, IIA and financial based certifications as they seem to think that the ISSA (Information Systems Security Assoc.) is sponsored by ISC2/CISSP's (it is not). Overall, I have not been impressed with this book.
Great resource.......2005-12-13
Not having much experience in the IT audit field, this book was a great resource and was easy to understand.

Extremely Pleased!.......2007-09-28
I received the Criminal Investigations book for $45. I assumed because the book sold on my campus for $85, that the $45 book would be in used condition. To my surprise when I opened the box, it was brand spanking new! Never opened and not a scratch in or on it.
I am using the book for a intro to criminal investigation course. The book breaks down every single detail from what is a criminal investigation to criminal investigations in the 21st century, and everything in between. Its the perfect book for a person new to the area of criminal justice or administration of justice. It gets into detail on each area, but its not too much to where the reader loosed interest. Perfect size and weight to carry in a tote or backpack!
Great Job Michael F. Brown
Great Piece of Work!!!..........2006-04-18
This book is required reading for our departments' promotional exam to Corporal/Detective. Of the many such books I've read, this text is by far the most practical. It lays out the solid and (I think) timeless tools and techniques of basic investigative skills. This book is much easier to read than others in the category, and the author backs up his theory with case law.
Great book by great professor.......2004-01-08
I was fortunate to have Dr. Brown as an instructor and advisor. His intelligence and no-nonsense attitude come through in his writing. This fascinating topic is explained by a seasoned homicide veteran and scholar, and unlike many other text books, this one is worth reading.

Keeping Your Social Security Benefits.......2007-06-08
This book gave you examples of the language you need to use. Pretty easy to read and I did find it helpful.
Great book; up-to-date information.......2007-05-27
this is a must for those of us who deserve disability, but will have to fight for our rights. some of us have what's referred to as "invisible problems" such as chronic severe back problems, Fibromyalgia, MS, etc, and this book is really good. Certainly worth the price.
Very Informative.......2007-01-10
This book gave a step by step process to apply for social security disability. It also answered every question that I had. This is a must read for anyone considering disability.
Essential.......2007-01-06
I had this and just gave it to a friend to use for his SSI. This book is a must for anyone pursuing or already receiving SSI and/or SSDI. Cut through the crapo of Bureaucracy and get the facts.
Good not Great.......2006-07-06
I would have given this book a five star rating, but it did not include two important SSA forms. The forms are sent to a claimant when his/her file is sent to the state office for development. These two forms are SSA-3373-BK (Function Report- Adult) and SSA-3380-BK (Function Report-Adult-Third Party). The two forms have to do with your Activities of Daily living, and when received have a 10 day return time. The forms can be found on the net, but you have to know they exist.

* how age, education and work experience affect benefits
* whether or not one can work while receiving benefits
* how to appeal a denial of benefits
* how to respond to a Continuing Disability Review * and much more

Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability.......2006-02-12
Not at all helpful if you are filling out an application for SSDI benefits. More than 3/4 of the book is on the appeal process and social security system jargon. You can tell it is written by a lawyer, its worthless.
Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability by Iii MD et al........2005-05-23
This book is invaluable for anyone contemplating a disability claim or for anyone seeking to preserve benefits. The authors explain the elements of a claim; namely the severity of an impairment and its impact on the ability to function in a work environment or setting. The MINE claims are predefined by the law. These are "Medical Improvement Not Expected". i.e. a number of debilitating arthritic diseases or diseases of the musculo-skeletal system
The 20CFR 404 provides an impairment list of conditions. The basic question is whether or not you can do a prior job or another similar one. The criteria will consider factors including
exertion, posture, manipulation, vision, communication,
environment and symptomatology. Major joint disfunctions are
an important marker for disability, as well as, loss of spinal
motion. Obstructive breathing disorders may qualify for disability, as well as, inflammatory conditions and chronic
digestive conditions which interfere with work.
This book will prove invaluable if you are dealing with the
government on a claim. The details of the evaluation process
are set forth in an easy-to-read format. The volume is worth the
price if you intend to apply its contents dispassionately.
A great reference book overall.......2004-03-11
This is an excellent book of the whole area of Social Security Disability benefits and how to fill the forms out completely, when to seek an attorney for appeals etc, and a rather extensive section on what the term disability means to Social Security and what diseases, conditions etc qualify and which do not. The only area lacking was disabled spousal Social Security Disability coverage, which a spouse under age 50 with no minor children must file for in the same way the working spouse who becomes disabled would have to do. I plan on donating my copy which I bought via Amazon.com to my local public library.
MUST HAVE.......2003-07-10
Filing for Social Security Disability benefits is not easy. This guide explains EVERYTHING in easy to understand terms. I wish I had ordered it before the first denial. I am using this book while filing a reconsideration. The suggestions provided have really opened my eyes to the process. I highly recommend this book to people who want a little extra information on the SSA's thought process when going over your application.
Get and keep your ssdi.......2002-07-15
Bought this book as part of prep for application for ssdi. (also bought how to get ssi and ssdi by mike davis and dis workbook for ss applicants by doug. smith). Each book explained a diff part of the ssdi process. This book told what each med diagnosis needed to establish to qualify for perm. disability. And it goes on to explain how to keep your ssdi once you get your award. I did win my case the first try using the info in the 3 books. Having them made all the diff in the world in understanding the ssdi process. Best $[money]. (all 3 books) I ever spent...
Product Description
The Disability Workbook book explains your role as a Social Security disability applicant, the requirements for initiating the claim, and how to provide the information Social Security needs to process the claim. Unlike comparable books, this one is written by an experienced disability lawyer. It gives you the perspective of a professional who has proven many Social Security disability cases. Worksheets in the book help you get organized and obtain the records for your claim. They equip you to discuss the specifics of your disability with your doctor and Social Security. Completing the worksheets also takes the terror out of completing the many forms that Social Security hands you at different stages of the process.

Application approved on first try!.......2007-08-18
When a neurological disorder forced me to resign after 32 years of working, I was overwhelmed, depressed and not sure what to do next. Fortunately, I had ordered this book 2 weeks before and had somewhere to turn. I completed the worksheets (LOTS of information that Social Security needs but does not request) and followed Mr. Smith's suggestion to have a personal interview with Social Security. The employee was visibly delighted with the detail provided in the worksheets and I just received approval of my application only 2 1/2 months after applying! (Locally, according to a story in today's paper, only 25% of applications are granted the first time around - and hearings take over 600 days.) I firmly believe that this book made a difference in my life.
relative of applicant.......2006-07-17
You need this book. You need this workbook, even if you think your disability application will be successful, and even if you have an attorney. Most importantly, it keeps you organized while you are stressed from illness, financial insecurity, and uncertainty. It provides a framework to keep you organized, especially if you have many disabling conditions which must be considered in combination, and must be presented together to SSA.
After assembling your information in the format provided by this workbook, you can see if anything is missing, or needs updating, or is conflicting, and requires further explanation. You can also be confident that you are communicating your data completely and consistently to the many interviewers, on the multiple SSA forms and through the numerous levels of review, that you may encounter in your application process.
Another advantage of this book for yourself and for your application, is that it allows your individual medical specialists to get a complete picture of your overall health and of the conditions that disable you. For example, it might help your orthopedist decide whether you can walk on uneven surfaces, if he is aware that your field of vision is restricted. And once the workbook questionaires are filled out, they can serve as the beginning of a health diary, which will help you manage your health and deal with the periodic SSA reviews of your disability once you get it.
Finally, the biggest advantage you get from this workbook, is that it puts the SSA employees on your team by making it easier for them to do their jobs. You are providing them with the information they need on your case in an accessible format which is simple for them to process and evaluate.
Do yourself a favor. Get the Disability Workbook by Douglas M . Smith.
A MUST HAVE if you are applying for disability.......2006-03-14
If you are applying for disability, this is the only book you need to guide you through everything. I've highly recommended it to thousands of people with chronic illness through HopeKeepers Magazine.
This workbook consolidates the information needed to prove disability claims and win benefits. It guides applicants through the application process with the goal of getting benefits promptly, without unnecessary appeals. The new edition discusses the "proofs" that the Social Security Administration processors look for, and it tells you how to keep your benefits through periodic disability reviews. The book is important because two-thirds of claims for Social Security disability benefit are denied initially.
Be sure to visit the author's web site too at http://www.disabilityfacts.com . It includes a variety of free articles for personal use, including: Prospects Improve for Winning Disability Quickly, Social Security Disability Outline (What to Expect), and Daily Activities Worksheet (very helpful when filling out the forms). Many frequently asked questions about applying for benefits are also addressed.
Resources available for a small purchase price include helpful items such as "Disability Evaluation in a Nutshell: A Three Minute Guide to Effective Medical Reports," to ensure that your doctor is keeping medical records and being an advocate for your health.
You will feel like you've got an inside scoop on how the system works. .
Author of How To Get SSI.......2006-02-18
I wrote the above title and have been in touch with Doug. Little did I know there would be a time when I would need to apply for SSI for someone in my family. Doug's book is indespensible to the SSDI/SSI disability claimant. He lists the information you'll need and plenty of forms are included. He's also got some hints like "get a face-to-face" interview. It's your right. What more can I say, I wrote a book on the subject and for additional help I turned to Doug's book immediately and it comes through with the goods. I think my book "How to Get SSI and Social Security Disability" still has vital and helpful information to add, despite some self-styled "expert" who says my book is a lie. This same expert has the same opinion of Dr. Morton's book by Nolo. I am an expert and I give Doug's book a full 2 thumbs up.
Mike Davis
The Information Social Security REALLY NEEDS.......2002-11-12
After personally speaking to Mr. Smith, I was convinced of his sincerity and committment to helping those applying for SSDI. I purchased this book, used the forms, and I got it on my first try.
His forms that I filled out(daily activities) and attached to all of my Doctor's forms were extraordinarily helpful and I believe essential in the decision making process for Social Security. It also proved helpful to the doctors who were making their reports. As long as your doctors know you, they still cannot be with you all day to know your moment to moment activities. These forms give them a birds eye view of what one deals with on a daily basis.
I recommend this book very highly.
Book Description
This offbeat, non-technical book looks at what hackers do, how they do it, and how you can protect yourself. The third edition of this bestseller (over 150,000 copies sold) adopts the same informative, irreverent, and entertaining style that made the first two editions a huge success. Thoroughly updated, this edition also covers rootkits, spyware, web bugs, identity theft, hacktivism, wireless hacking (wardriving), biometrics, and firewalls.
Customer Reviews:
Couldn't get past one sentance..........2006-08-15
"Hackers are generally lazy but intelligent, which means they don't like doing something boring that they can program the computer to do for them instead." and thats as far as I got. It irritates me how someone thinks they have enough knowledge on a subject to write a book, yet blatantly has no understanding of the subculture they pretend to have an expertise in. You can get away with this trashy writing in The Daily Mail, but if you're trying to educate people then you're just going to get seen thru straight away.
A book for those who want to know the Internet.......2005-06-07
This is a very interesting book, full of web links, tips and Internet resources. This reminds me of another earlier book on Internet web resources but on different topics. Sharing files seems so harmless, and yet it touches on many aspects of our lives. From downloading the innocent MP3 music, to sharing the pirated software (i.e., warez), to browsing pornographic images, this shows how easy one can cross the line. This is certainly a book for the security professionals who would like to have a better understanding of how the hacking underground works, how the secret trading is done from using newsgroups, IRC chats to how hackers use peer-to-peer file sharing technologies such as eDonkey, Kazza, bit Torrent, to distribute their files/secrets. It is also a book for anyone who simply wants to have an awareness of what is out there.
The book also explains how hacker hides his identity in this digital world. In addition to explaining how these technologies can be used, the author also provides suggestions for readers how to protect their systems from having worm, and/or virus attacks. The author also provides a list of freeware for anti-virus protection for those who cannot afford to buy, as well as providing alterative open software for office and photoshops utilities. Lastly, the author talks about copyright laws and what the future holds, giving his opinion on whether how we could adapt to the file sharing technologies. All in all, this is a very informative book. It certainly is an eye-opener.
An entertaining read but not much on information. .......2005-05-06
Definitely a book for beginners, this book is not much more then an introduction to the "dark underside". It should effectively scare any parents or newbes, but bore anyone who's been on the net for any amount of time. I'm not very experienced on the subject of security but still this book didn't have much to offer me. There are a lot of other books out there that provide this information and take it a step or two farther.
The book does present a nice history lesson about hacking and tells about many hacking programs, but most of them are nothing but history themselves. Probably the most informative thing about this book is the web sites it references. It does give you starting blocks to find information you're interested in but doesn't do much for providing that information itself.
If your looking for the possible bad things you could encounter on the net this book provides an introduction to them. It's a good read for someone who only wants the basics. But if you want some more in-depth information don't waste your time and money.
Mildly entertaining and moderately informative........2004-12-22
Upon finishing a book, I always take a moment to reflect on what I've learned from the reading of it. Experts/hackers, don't waste your money. This book is a good primer for the computer-illiterate parent who wants to protect their children, or the new computer owner who wants to keep their machine relatively "safe" from viruses and script kiddies. Professionals will learn nothing new, nor will veteran hackers or even long time computer users. Also, I don't recommend this book to anyone living in a dictatorship or third world country (for reasons of personal safety).
Wallace Wang's sense of humor and amusing paranoia kept me from falling asleep on the pages. After all, if the FBI, CIA or NSA is -seriously- after you, I think you have bigger problems than securing your email.
The darker side of the net..........2004-11-09
If you're looking for something that covers the murky underbelly of the internet, you might want to check out Steal This Computer Book 3 by Wallace Wang.
Chapter List: Finding What You Need: The Magic Of Search Engines; Alternative Sources Of News And Information; Censoring Information (We Know What's Best For You); Hacktivism: Online Activism; Pledging Allegiance: Hatred As Patriotism; Where The Hackers Are; Viruses And Worms; Trojan Horses: Beware Of Geeks Bearing Gifts; Con Games On The Internet; Online Stalkers; Probing A Target; Sneaking Into A Computer; Digging In; Computing On A Shoestring; Protecting Your Data And Your Privacy; Waging War On Spam; Web Bugs, Adware, Pop-ups, and Spyware; Firewalls, Intrusion-Dectection Systems, and Honeypots; Computer Forensics: Recovering And Deleting Data; Protecting Your Computer; Software; A Hacker's Gallery Of Rogue Tools; A Bit Of History: Phone Phreaking And Other Phun; Glossary; Index
On the back cover, you have this warning: "This book is not to be used for hacking into government computers, shutting down AOL, cracking software, phone phreaking, spreading viruses, or any other illegal activity." That's enough to get your attention. Depending on your background, I think you'll have varying reactions to the book. People who haven't been exposed to information like this will quickly learn that all is not safe when you're online. If you've surfed the web for any length of time as an IT professional, you'll read a lot of the information and say "I already know that". But even then, you'll pick up some ideas and concepts that you may not have been aware of. The packaging of the book is rather unique. The cover and pages have a dirty, "photocopied" look to make it appear more illicit than it actually is. It becomes one of those books that will catch someone's eyes on a book shelf, and may need to be explained. :-)
An interesting read, and you will learn a few things along the way....
