Mediocre, at best.......2006-02-27
So what if UCLA uses this as their primary freshman text? UCSD (where I go), MIT, and other schools use it too, and every student I've met agrees that this book is sub-par. It isn't as clear as it can be, is bereft of example problems that apply to the homework, has at least a few mistakes per chapter in the solutions manual, spends way too much time deriving some (useless) things more applicable to physical chemisty, etc.
Great!.......2005-10-06
I got the order sooner than i expected and it was in exactly the condition they said it was in. I am very pleased with my order.
Confusion.......2004-12-21
Book layout is overly confusing. Text is sometimes not as clear as can be and needs more practice examples (most apparent in sections like isomers and titrations). Yes like one person said before, UCLA does use this text to teach Life science majors, but there are better choices. There are numerous mistakes in the solution guides still, and Zumdahl's "Chemical Principles" is a much better read in my opinion. I actually used it to clear up points this text was muddy on. Your mileage may vary.
Generally good.......2004-03-02
This is one of the more advanced general chem textbooks available. It has a review section at the beginning of the book for those who are not quite ready for college level chemistry. Unlike its two main competitors(Principles of Modern Chemistry by Oxtoby and Chemical Principles by Zumdahl), it introduces quantum chemistry (at very basic level) first. If you have hard time with this book, you might have to go down a level and find a text for regular science major general chemistry, for example, Brown/LeMay/Bursten or Moore/Stanitski/Jurs.
THE COLLOGE 1ST SEMESTER HONORS CHEM BOOK.......2004-01-05
I used this book for my 1st semester Honors Chemistry class at Cornell University (CHEM 215). Even though Chem is not my favorite science subject (I'm an electrical engineer, so I prefer physics instead) I have to say the combination of book and professor (Benjamin Widom), makes me remember that class as my favorite one during my first semester at Cornell. I wouldn't listen too much to the negative reviewer (Who wrote this book?). The book is not bad at all; it is just focused towards students who are going to be majoring on Chemistry (Pre-Meds). But that doesn't make it "bad". I do recognize that there are some typos in this edition that our professor easily corrected (that's why I gave it a 4 and not a 5).

Well written........2007-05-23
When I was getting a very brief introduction of genetics in my Biology book by Raven, for some reason I was just not understanding what the hell I was reading. This book is easy to grasp, very well written. I highly recommend it to anyone, also, the CD is pretty good.
it was great.......2007-03-09
this book helped me a lot. i used the book for its extra problems which they were great.
Great Purchase.......2005-09-01
There was no marks in the whole book, and the price was great.
The best introductory text broadly covering the field.......2003-07-11
I would rate this as one of the best (if not the best) introductory texts in genetics. Comparing this to various other material that I've come across, Snustad and Simmons definitely exhibit superior aptitude in educational skills in this work. They have a firm grasp of what their target readers can understand and know how build up the readers' progressive comprehension while keeping the interest level high. This is the true mark of a well-constructed textbook. We all know how boring some texts can be, but I found myself always itching to read on and even go backward to review some of the concepts. The authors' use of simple language (unlike some other "introductory" texts) makes reading somewhat "light and fun" in contrast to some others who seem to not be as adept in communicating to "pre-PhD" students.
Another characteristic that makes this work stand out is it's sheer beauty. The illustrations, photographs, charts, and even the layout are absolutely gorgeous! Hey, I'm not one who judges a book by the cover, but even the cover is beautiful! The artwork is well thought out and easy to understand. Many parts of the text can be reviewed plainly by looking at the pictorial descriptions without necessitating too much re-reading of the sections.
The authors also include well-placed "sidelights" throughout the book to help the reader get a "real-life" connection to subject. And the sidelights are mostly about what we care about most...ourselves. Thus, in addition to constant reference to medical applications here and there, the sidelights help the reader appreciate what genetics is all about.
Another important aspect of this text is that it is up to date. The authors have taken into consideration the exponential advances in the field and documented it here. That is just one more plus to this already fantastic piece of work!
i want to review this book again.......2003-01-22
i have read this book once but i am very keen to read again this book so i want to read this book and for that i want to see the review of this book.

Book Description
A convenient, up-to-date, time-saving reference for the diagnosis, psychopharmacologic treatment, and psychotherapeutic management of the full range of psychiatric disorders. Includes a highly useful separate section devoted to psychiatric disorders occurring in infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Extensive Index and detailed Table of Contents afford easy access to material.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best and most usable psychiatry texts.......2004-05-02
I agree with the other favorable reviews. The Lange series in general is amazing--affordable and complete at the same time. I was impressed with the detailed discussion of alternate theories of personality development, the possible etiologies of the mental illnesses, and the theories of drug action. Many psychiatric texts, including the very pricy "standards," tend to be written in a dogmatic, cookbook style. In contrast, the Lange book does not try to shield the reader from the ambiguity and uncertainty that face anyone treating the mental disorders.
I noticed a few important errors, though. One of the drug side effect charts contains the absurd assertion that tranylcypromine is highly sedating (in fact, it is so activating that a few patients have used it to get a meth-like "high") whereas trazadone (used more as a sleep aid than as an antidepressant) is "low" in sedation. Obviously, one should not rely on this book exclusively for prescribing infomation.
In combination with a more carefully edited psychopharmacology reference, *Current Diagnosis...* should be very useful to both serious medical students and new psychiatric residents.
Also recommended: For pre-1994 medications, the late Dr. Bernstein's *Drug Therapy in Psychiatry* remains the best monograph on the subject.
CAPTIVATING AND WELL-ARRANGED.......2002-10-10
From infancy to adolescence, it is hard to find any medium-sized book that described developmental psychiatry (and psychology) the way this 640-paged "Current Diagnosis & Treatment in Psychiatry" did.
Generous information were given to both psycho-etiology (including psychiatric genetics) and psycho-pharmacology. Anxiety, eating and sleeping disorders, as well as impulse-control problems were explained in details.
The topics contained in this book are so captivating and well-arranged that you will never want to stop once you've started. The book is a masterpiece!
Up-to-date , usefull , easy to read and cheap!!!.......2001-09-25
I'm a medical doctor in my country (Brazil)and I am a general practitioner with a large experience in treating people with psychiatric problems. When I was a medical student my coleagues of university indicated the current books series. At that time this books was very cheap and after read my first book , current medical diagnosis and treatment , I begin to acquire other books of current series.
The hallmark of this series is to be cheap, concise and easy to read ( a very important feature for people of other countries where english is not the official language ).
This book has two parts. The first part is about theory of psychiatry with chapters about psycology , neurosciences , etc.
The second part is a well-writed and pratical text explaining all-over diseases covered in DSM-IV.
Each disease explanation begins with the corresponding DSM-IV criteria of diagnosis and includes diferential diagnosis, treatment and outcomes in a step-by-step mode which every medical professional can understand.
This book is a cost-effective investment.
I recomend too the other books of current series.

Book Description
Led by Lewis Wolpert, an influential developmental biologist, this distinguished team of authors presents a new and revised edition of the best-selling and popular textbook Principles of Development. Central to their approach is an emphasis on principles and key concepts as well as the idea
that understanding how genes control cell behavior is the key to comprehending development. The authors assume that students are familiar with the basics of cell biology and genetics but also provide thorough explanations of all key concepts in the text, such as the control of gene activity. The
book focuses on those systems-such as vertebrates and Drosophila-that best illuminate the common principles of development, and also discusses other systems like the nematode and sea urchin. A unique feature of the book is its coverage of plant development, which is usually neglected in other
textbooks but has significant relevance to the field of developmental biology. Full of spectacular illustrations and diagrams, Principles of Development, Second Edition, provides the excellent content and quality design of its predecessor, and also incorporates valuable new material.
Customer Reviews:
A good source of pretty pictures for your lecture presentation...........2005-12-22
I used Wolpert's text for an undergrad developmental course. Given that the test assumes previous coursework in genetics/biochemistry, the content of the book could've been more in depth, especially in the chapters on vertebrates. Sometimes extra detail makes the big picture easier to understand; this book leaves a little too much to mystery and results in a confused reader. The glossary and index leave much to be desired. On a more positive note, the illustrations and photographs are as good as you'll find in any textbook. However, I suggest Gilbert's text.
CAUTION: not a good intro to development.......2003-09-23
I am currently using this text for my 300 level developmental biology class. You know the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words", well, this book is a thousand words without the pictures. It is very cumbersome to read. You know there is a problem when a book makes more sense when read in reverse. I am being very serious. FOr example, the author will be overly vague in introducing a topic, but still use specific terms without any prior introdution. Vital details necessary to understanding the text are given when needed. Throughout, terms are used before definitions are given, which makes the reader go nuts trying to figure out the meanings of more than half of the sentences.
Seriously, i do not understand the "excellent" reviews that others have given it.
I think it may be true that this book is VERY Comprehensive, but as far as clarity, theres none for students trying to understand the basics and a little more. If you are a professor, and know the material, then this book is probably a pleasure to read.
If you are like me, and just want to have a thorough understanding of the basics of developement, it would be in your best interest to look elsewhere.
An Excellent Textbook.......2000-01-25
Wolpert's developmental biology textbook is evidently an excellent text in its field. The authors are all well recognized in thier research areas. The organization of the text is also very well written. The summary of the concept presented at the end of each chapter is helpful. The figures presented througout the text are clear and the language used to explain them is simple but very understandable. Compared with the well-known Gilbert's text, this text may be less in dept but you can get the concept from this book for only half of the time reading Gilbert's. It is a nice book to have both for the new beginner in the field and for just a quick reference.
Greatest revolution of text in development.......1999-02-01
@I read this book for 2 months. Chapters of regeneration is more impressive than any other chapters. Moreover, I impressed that this bppk is best for beginners and students. Composition is also excellent.

Online Order of School Book.......2005-10-18
I received excellent service when I ordered this book online through Amazon. The service made it easier to obtain an item that would have taken much more time that I cannot spare. The item received was just as expected--in excellent condition. I would recommend this service to all. Amazon takes away the worries of difficulties/problems that could easily arise.
Dhs biology.......2004-09-09
At dunwoody high biology is very hard at least in my class. This book didn't make it any easer weighing in at 250lbs i would do whatever it took not to lug this thing to and from school. So I got the cd. I still have to carry the book to class and the cd stinks anyways. I also find the concepts a little uh poorly written. This book stinks. I'm hoping however to try and work around it and pull my grade up. I just hope the next class won't have to deal with that aweful book.
[NO GOOD!].......2004-03-28
This book is no good, my students never bring it to class and never crack it open, yet they still manage to recieve mostly A's and B's. Paying somewhat attention in class could help you just as much if not more than reading this nuisance of a book!!!
If it wasn't for the superindendant of our school district this book would have found itself in the dumpster,(...)
It [stunk].......2003-06-24
If you're a teacher wanting to buy this book, DON'T! It is so heavy, I would find any way I could not to have to shove the stupid thing in my backback. It does not explain things well, and it made freshman year accel. biology MISERABLE!
Book Description
This bestselling business classic of more than twenty-five years' duration is a dead-on account of why boredom, bungling, and bad management are built into every organization. Through hilarious case histories and cartoons adapted from Punch, Dr. Peter shows how America's corporate career track drives employees relentlessly upward -- until they get promoted into jobs they just can't do and wind up desperately treading water, driving their colleagues crazy, and dragging down productivity and profit.
Customer Reviews:
Painful truth made fun of.......2007-01-27
The Peter principle is a small book about hierarchies and how people act within the hierarchy. The peter principle itself states that "in a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence".
In the beginning, the book explains the law and it's difficult to actually determine the authors seriousness. The points he makes seem valid, at least according my person experiences. However, the way it's written and the some paragraphs clearly suggest a not that serious undertone.
The further you read it the book, the more hilarious it becomes! In chapter 8 the author goes on to prove that Freud had actually reached his level of incompetence. Chapter 12 describes indicators for finding out if you've reached your level of incompetence, all having insane names. In chapter 15 he almost overdoes it when explaining that humans are hard on their way of reaching their level of incompence in the animal hierarchy...
The book is extremly funny and well worth reading. I'd recommend that while reading, now and then put it aside and think about the things Peter has to say. It's hilarious and ... has some truth in it?
perfect couple.......2007-01-04
after enjoying Parkinsons law (by Parkinson), I loved to read this booklet. Not very scientifically but a lot of interesting knowledge considering the year of publication
Right on the money.......2005-07-30
In the first chapter of the book, after a few examples of his principle in action, Laurence Peter proposes his Peter principle: "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." He proceeds to take the reader on a journey through the nascent field of "hierarchiology," defining the necessary terms as he goes along. He provides superb insight into why the hierarchies and bureacracies of the world are so inefficient and are becoming increasingly so, why successful people are often unhappy in their jobs and why the most talented people often proceed through their careers without material reward. Peter's observations are funny, but alarmingly true. An excellent resource for the armchair sociologist - highly recommended.
Enlightning ... to a certain extent.......2004-11-26
It is true: this books is quite humorous and intriguing.
The first time I read it I was fascinated by the whole idea. I was able to relate this to many other ideas used in problem solving and critical thinking. However, upon a second reading I started to see some inconsistencies, and a couple of things started to annoy me.
However, the book is great in that it gives great cohesion and logic to the justification and mechanisms of incompetence in the world. His ideas are very engaging and, in more than a way, sadly funny at the same time.
As is my experience, this book should be read at least twice.
For the thorough reader, three times is recommended. Why?
Because the ideas are very appealing at first, but on a second pass you will start to notice certain inconsistent ideas.
Very worth reading, and if you should read it just once, it is more than worth the try.
quite humorous and ironic, but realistic.......2004-08-21
I think that most people will view this book with an apprehensive nature. Why? Simply because almost all readers know the basic theme of this work: that people in the business world, not matter what field or area, rise naturally to their own level of incompetence.
I think most would consider their jobs quite productive, especially if they are working in their chosen fields. I cannot imagine that many people work their ways up the chain of command simply to be less productive. (And according to Dr. Peter, denial is one of the symptoms!)
I really enjoyed the book, which is full of humor and irony, but I worry that readers will either not take it seriously or either go to the other extreme and consider the principle to be an all-inclusive unavoidable trap. It does not help that Dr. Peter in his quirky way, offers no real solution to the dilemma.
So I suggest that readers give much thought to the evidence that the book presents (each example does after all make quite a lot of sense). It had me identifying related cases in the jobs I've had.
Finally, The Peter Principle is an easy read, divided by chapters and subdivided by categories with several examples. Quick readers should able to read it thoroughly in around two days, especially if the sarcastic wit holds them.

The understanding of why any business or organization will prevail........2007-03-09
Absolutely Druckers best! This is one of three Books that are fundamentally important for existing in business. This is the understanding necessary for helping leaders, management and future leaders make decisions. This should be a text book for anyone starting a business, all business schools, all business decision makers,or anyone that wants(or has)to make decisions in any enterprise. You will BE better for reading this book. Take your time, because it is all here.
I fully concur: 1st book to present innovation & entrepreneurship as a purposeful & systematic discipline!.......2006-10-02
I am very gratified to note that this wonderful book is still around & is being re-released as a new print. I read it when it was first published in the mid-80s. I remember that I had reread it during the early 90's when I had just started my own consultancy business.
I fully concur that this book is the first book to present innovation & entrepreneurship as a purposeful & systematic discipline. The book concists of three major parts:
- Part I: The Practice of Innovation;
- Part II: The Practice of Entrepreneurship;
- Part III: Entrepreneurial Strategies;
According to the author, entrepreneurial strategies are as important as purposeful innovation & entrepreneurial management. Together, they make up innovation & entrepreneurship.
What I like most about the book is the author's clear definition & concise elaboration of innovation as a disciplined business practice. He makes a very clear distinction: "Business, because of its purpose, has just two functions, & only two: MARKETING & INNOVATION. Marketing & Innovation make money. Everything else is a cost."
Best of all, he also provides some general guidelines for identifying innovative opportunities.
As a matter of fact, in Part I of the book, he describes the seven sources for innovative opportunities. Each of these seven sources are systematically covered in a specific chapter. For all entrepreneur-wannabes out there, understanding these 'innovative secrets of success' alone is worth the price of the entire book.
The breakthrough book On Disruption.......2006-08-27
Drucker coined the term "entrepreneurial judo" in one of the final chapters of this book, back in 1984, to explain the unexpected success of new entrants that cracked mature markets by introducing lower quality products or services, often aimed at marginal market segments.
Companies like Sony, with the first transistor radio, or Citibank's German expansion or MCI's launch.
This proved to be the early catalyst for Clayton Christensen's detailed examination of disruptive innovation more than 10 years later.
As Drucker points out, the success could be summarized in the motto of a civil war general: "Hit them where they ain't."
Drucker's book, as all his works, is clearly grounded in customer-focused, down-to-earth views of business. He includes a helpful list of Do's and Dont's for innovation that any entrepreneur should know and embrace.
A must for any budding entrepreneur.......2006-05-27
Ok, so you want to start your own business but do not have a business degree? Don't know the rules of the game? Then do buy this book and read it thoroughly. I still use it as a guide in my little internet startup that I formed a few years ago. A must have for anyone with no business background but still wants to make it big :)
Maureen Hull - Review.......2005-09-09
Outstanding book and content. Has helped me make over $2 million dollars in my businesses. I was told to include that in the review. Anyway... We like to be positive, be successful. Maureen Hull.
