I read this book as a primer for the more advanced class at Harvard. It's a good introduction but take the class if you can. This book is most useful for managers and as a reference to refer to high level approaches with hints for how to dig into more detail.

3 out of 5 stars Can government do better? An interesting conversation.......2006-10-21

I recently revisited this book and it has some solid ideas on transforming the way government is run. So much of the debate today is on how to use government, conservatives to benefit those who have, and liberals to benefit those who do not have. Both want to spend money, so big and small is a useless paradigm. So we need to again talk about how to make the government we have responsive. No small chore. And this book will not solve placing political hacks into leadership positions and destroying career professionals and their work as we have seen over the last several years. None of this can be done if we do not have competent professionals in leadership positions with the courage to take on how our government delivers its services.

5 out of 5 stars Reinventing Government.......2005-07-27

This is an excellent book that covers all of the facts about our old and new government laws in comparison to current events that occur within our society. Regulations and guidelines are also described about the Private and Public Sector and how they differ. It is definately a great book.

4 out of 5 stars With low expectations, it is good.......2002-06-01

Firstly, let me say that I agree with most of the other readers when they write that this book was neither academic nor "reinventive". I will say that this was strictly an idea book, a motivator to the masses. So long as one doesn't expect emperical research, evenhanded arguements, or even updated conclusions, they are fine. When reading this book, don't expect, nor should you expect, to be handed ideas on a platter to run with. Rather, they present the optimum view of their vision. Whether it is right, wrong or impossible, they put forth thoughts that could spark change. The change that I am speaking of is not a grand sweeping motion that will forever alter the government, but rather pieces of an idea. Even if these particular ideas are not implemented, the chances of them sparking new ways of approach or implementation are greater.

In reading this book, I didn't take what the writers wrote verbatum, but I did begin to think about what I, as an individual, could do in my organization to make a difference. That is the target audience. These authors didn't write this book for the scholars or for the world of academia, but rather for the practical administrator in the field. Read this recomended book with above information in mind. If anything, it will be an interesting one.

1 out of 5 stars Foolishness, Fads, and Folly.......2002-05-09

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, US Defense Contractors were also on the verge of collapse, that is until someone had the bright idea of privatizing the government. Current government privatization efforts have resulted in huge contracts costing the American taxpayer double and triple the cost of the original government employees. This book is a Conservative Pipe Dream, a guide to a fantasy bureaucracy that never existed, and a bomb that has totally disrupted the efficient operation and security of the Federal Government.

4 out of 5 stars A Third Way Perhaps!.......2000-10-28

Very interesting approach which makes an endeavor to integrate government and business. The idea this books advocates is to steer rather then rowing. It emphasizes on building up of the community and empowering it so it becomes self-sufficient. I would say that Al Gore and Tony Blair are two very strong supporters of this new approach of running the government.

Book Description

Alice Walker uses political commentary, poetry, and hard-won wisdom to look at what it means to be a human being in violent times.

4 out of 5 stars A prophetic text for a time of crisis.......2002-02-18

"Sent by Earth: A Message from the Grandmother Spirit after the Attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon," by Alice Walker, is a short text (57 pages) which attempts to deal with the ramifications of the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. The book is actually adapted from a speech which Walker gave to the Midwives Alliance of North America at Albuquerque, New Mexico, on September 22, 2001.

Walker is a prolific and versatile African-American author, and having read much of her poetry and prose, I found "Sent by Earth" to be very much in tune with her work to date. Walker doesn't just discuss the September 11 attacks in this text. Her other topics include the history of racist oppression in the United States ("American Apartheid" as she calls it), female genital mutilation (which she wrote about in her book "Possessing the Secret of Joy"), African cultural tradition, the deaths of Iraqi children since Operation Desert Storm, the Taliban's oppression of women in Afghanistan, and more. Along the way she writes with admiration of such individuals as U.S. Congresswoman Barabara Lee and Buddhist peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh. At the heart of Walker's book seems to be the question, "How do we reclaim a proper relationship with the world?"

"Sent by Earth" struck me as somewhat fragmented, as not fully formed. Nevertheless, Walker's passion for justice, compassion for other human beings, and multicultural vision shine through.

4 out of 5 stars A message people should listen to.......2002-02-16

First off, I'd like to say thanks to the publisher for another fine addition to the Open Media Pamphlet series. We need you more than ever before!

I've never read anything by Alice Walker before and I was mildly surprised at how much I like her. What do you know, it does pay to expand your mind and read something unknown.

Although the book is incredibly small (the price is great though) Walker, in a speech on September 22nd to the Midwives Alliance of North America, is able to articulate her beliefs and give her take on the ways that we as a human race can deal with tragedy and violence in the world today.

I was slightly confused by some of the sections (maybe just not focused or maybe needs a second reading) but I feel that I was able to receive her message more or less. She feels that people don't feel connected or welcome in society and are unable to give voice to their concerns or anger in a acceptable manner. She also believes that a major source of violence today is caused by people who feel unloved. Therefore, the best way to fight anger or violence is with love.

I personally feel that this may be to simple of an answer, but I would like it to be the correct one. The world would be a better place if everyone shared some of Walker's beliefs.

I would like to give it five stars, but like I stated earlier, I found it confusing at times and difficult to fully comprehend. Like a great poem, maybe it will take on more significance with further readings.

      2 out of 5 stars The structure.......2001-05-05

Upon reading the book "Chinese Eunuchs The Structure of Intimate Politics", by Mr. Taisuke Mitamura, i found the structure to be very unorganized and at times, hard to follow. Given, the book starts off well, with vivid descriptions of what a eunuch was and how they became eunuchs, but in the later chapters the book, (or at least i felt) went off tangent. What i mean is that it began to describe the roles of "fearsome wives" and then into the "Yellow Age". Maybe i missed the essence (albeit i read the book very quickly) but i thought the focus was in the role of eunuchs in intimate politics.

      2 out of 5 stars bad translation.......2000-05-21

I don't recommend this book. Ther are so many omissions and mistranslations, in addition transformations by Judeo-Christians' biases. For example, Mr. Mitamura never used the word like "perversion" "perverts" or "perverted sex", he just wrote nanshoku(male/male love), male-boy lovers, or male/male sex. If possible, I recommend to read his original book written in easy Japanese, and much more precise in detail, in addition very cheap

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and superficial........1999-10-31

This is a book, that would waste space on anyone's bookshelves.

In 1877 a paper was presented by G. Carter Stent before the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. It was on Chinese Eunuchs. The paper contained many inaccuracies and much portentous twaddle. Some time later it was translated into Japanese. Professor Mitamura read it and then wrote, in Japanese, a book on eunuchs and based it substantially on Stent's article. Stent's inaccuracies were blithely reproduced. Mitamura's book was translated into English. Thus the nonsense was not only continued but even compounded.

Mitamura is revolted by the subject of eunuchs, though that does not stop him from wallowing in the worst of Stent's detailed descriptions of one of the three methods of producing a eunuch. Perhaps this, as he says, is "due to the feeling of disgust evoked by he word 'eunuch'." He implies that all eunuchs were "swept clean", and had all their private parts removed. Not so. This only occurred during a short period in Chinese history when a canard was perpetrated that eunuchs could regenerate. Removal of all the sexual parts is a drastic operation. Most of those subjected to the enforced treatment died.

Mitanura happily states that "All the eunuchs underwent a change of voice after castration." Again rubbish. Change of voice does not take place. Young boys who still have their treble retain that treble. Males who have a deep voice retain that deep voice. And he repeats Carter Stent's assertion that eunuchs stink and " can be detected by smell 300 metres away." More pure biased twaddle.

Mitamura is not generous to his source in spite of so much of Stent's trash being plagiarised. The original paper is dismissed casually in the Bibliography as "Essay."

The publishers quote only one review of the book, a snippet from the well known Mainichi Daily News, which says the book is "An eye-opening, knee closing study." It's a pity, professor, that you didn't study the subject better.

      Book Description

Drawn from research in the manuscript records of the federal judiciary and the court reports of the Florida Supreme Court, this book examines how state and federal judges responded to the enforcement of local, state, and national prohibition in Florida. Upholding these measures often resulted in governmental encroachment on civil liberties; consequently, judges found themselves positioned to determine the scope of the liquor laws. As they balanced the rights of individuals with the power of the state, Florida judges acted independently of public opinion and based their rulings on precedent and citation of authority. To present the fullest picture possible, this text, while focusing on the efforts of the judges to uphold the spirit and the letter of the various liquor laws, it also considers the views of individuals who violated prohibition.

unlike the dry accounts one often reads of our sometimes sobering historical past, dr. guthrie has rendered the material in an informative and entertaining manner. his choice selection of anecdotes engages the reader in a topic that, in the hands of a lesser scholar, might be considered an account of arcane litigations. to be sure, dr. guthrie's book was a pleasantly inebriating reading experience, and one which i can highly recommend to anyone interested in this period of american history.

From the author: A relatively recent best-selling publication and continuing popular book entitled Reinventing Government has received acclaim on the one hand, and on the other substantial criticism. Various elected officials and administrators of public agencies from Florida to California have suggested the book as a blue-print for the development of more effective and efficient government. A more critical reading of the book suggests that while it does present some noteworthy concepts, it takes liberties with historical fact, makes unsupported assumptions and demonstrates little respect for the country's conscientious, hard-working and productive public sector employees. As a result, the book and many of its recommendations, while being worthy of discussion, cannot be considered a serious piece of scholarly journalism.
