Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Read the First Chapter of Women & Money
For Women Only
I never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves.

Book Description
Why is it that women, who are so competent in all other areas of their lives, cannot find the same competence when it comes to matters of money?
Suze Orman investigates the complicated, dysfunctional relationship women have with money in this groundbreaking new book. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and soul-deep recognition, she equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from making more out of the money they make. At the center of the book is The Save Yourself Plan—a streamlined, five-month program that delivers genuine long-term financial security. But what’s at stake is far bigger than money itself:
It’s about every woman’s sense of who she is and what she deserves, and why it all begins with the decision to save yourself.

Managing Money.......2007-10-17
This book is an excellent tool for women of any age to learn how to manage money; how to make responsible choices for the present and informed choices for the future.
Great gift!.......2007-10-01
Bought this for a good friend who was widowed a year ago and had not been involved in finances during the marriage. She is digging herself out of some financial challenges and she said the book made her feel really good about her progress. Highly recommend!!
Suze is Five Stars.............2007-09-21
I've listened to Suze Orman on TV and I bought this book for my wife who doesn't want to manage her portfolio. She still won't manage her portfolio, but she's getting smarter about investments.
Suze Orman Shares Investing Common Sense with Her Book Women & Money.......2007-09-20
Suze Orman Shares Investing Common Sense with Her Book Women & Money ~ Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny
By Lisa Manyon [...]
Money is a topic you either embrace or avoid. Orman's book delivers straight talk on investing for women and building individual wealth.
Personally I've always know just enough about investing to put some money away each month and I rely on financial advisors to steer me in the right direction.
Suze shares a candid look at her life and how she got to where she is now. Plus she offers a no nonsense approach to making sure women begin to really think about taking care of their own business.
With an uplifting vein of optimism about what is possible throughout the book, Orman successfully illustrates traits and tactics to help women thoughtfully approach investing.
Orman's 8 qualities of wealthy women have been shared on national talk shows and cannot be stressed enough.
Qualities 1 and 2 are harmony and balance. These are said to be the most important qualities because they are the foundation for all other qualities.
Quality 3 is courage. Orman writes that "Courage gives harmony expression. When your thoughts and feelings are one, courage helps you manifest them in the form of words and actions."
Quality 4 is generosity. Orman points out that woman tap into this almost too quickly. We tend to be overly generous with our time, support, love and money. The true measure of generosity, according to Orman, is being able to allow money to come into your hands and out through your heart.
This was a concept I can relate to. Orman challenges women to look at why and what they give and how it makes them feel. She also offers six rules for giving (but, you'll have to grab a copy of the book to find out what these are).
Quality number 5 is happiness. According to Orman when you find the courage to live your life in harmony and balance, you understand and practice generosity, happiness will spontaneously appear.
And perhaps the most important point she shares about happiness is this; "Happiness is not a luxury. It is a necessity for true wealth."
Quality number 6 comes in the form of wisdom. Who doesn't want to be wiser?
According to Orman, wisdom is more than intellectual and not directly related to education. Wisdom is an express result of tapping into your core beliefs to make the right decisions for yourself.
The 7th quality is cleanliness and is all about the importance of order and organization. A laundry list of situations that subtract from your wealth status include;
- Not knowing where your money is
- Not having a systematized filing system for important documents
- Pulling crumpled bills and receipts out of your purse
- Maintaining a vehicle that looks like a garbage can
- Having closets that are filled with junk and clutter.
I am sure most of us can relate to at least one area we need to work on. I have to admit, as organized as I am, I could relate to a couple of those scenarios. Orman's philosophy really makes sense and I've corrected my personal problem areas. My first order of business was donating clothing I had not used or worn in the past year to charity.
The final quality is beauty. Orman ties all the qualities together by noting beauty is what you achieve when all the qualities are combined.
To some it may seem strange that the qualities of wealthy women are included in a book on investing. However, if you personally don't possess the qualities it will not be as easy for you to achieve your wealth potential.
In addition to the foundational building blocks Orman shares solid advice on choosing the right investor, the importance of having one personal savings account in your name only and discusses investment options in layman's terms so anyone can get started right way.

A very good book overall on personal finance.......2004-03-11
A very good down-to-earth book that readers can immediately start putting to good use.
Conversational Economics 301.......2000-11-01
For those of us who have gotten to know Chris Farrell on "Right On The Money", this book is a long awaited and welcomed companion to his public television show. A great introduction to those not familiar with his warm style. Good reading;great information.
Very Informative.......2000-06-20
For a young man who does not know much about personal finances, this book has been great. It told me all the things that everyone is supposed to know, but I didn't. I am young and inexpierienced in handling my finances, and this book appealed to me because I do not think it was written to appeal to the know it all Wall Street audience. This book is already helping me get my finances together, and hopefully will see more from Chris Farrell in the future.
Human Finance At Last !.......2000-06-20
I totally disagree with these other reviewers. This book puts the "personal" back in personal finance. Other books are like automotive manuals - look up the problem and find the answer. This book has great narrative and puts a human face on the problem
Pleasing and Easy To Understand.......2000-06-20
The book "Right On The Money" is a very informative book on controlling your personal finances. Finally a writer does not assume everyone has all the knowledge needed to set up your finances. If you are a middle class person this is an excellent book that is helping get my finances together.

Customer Reviews:
Needs to be updated!.......2007-06-10
While I liked McCullough's encouraging tone and some of her ideas, this book needs to be revised for modern times. Written 27 years ago, some examples like the to do item "type ditto" and how a friend saved worktime by getting an extra-long cord on her phone are so outdated that they provided a few unintended laughs. A better purchase might be the Messie books by Sandra Felton, or for household management, the Flylady book.
Dated, But Some Good Information.......2006-11-17
This book was just okay. There was some good information but not very much that was new or not available from other sources. I love household and organization books, so I enjoyed it, but many readers might be looking for something more current.
Too old fashioned.......2006-08-15
This book had some good ideas if it were 1970. It's very outdated. I'm sure it was a good book when it was still current, but in 2006, it's just a a waste of time and money.
simply life-changing.......2003-10-22
I bought this book at a homeschool conference about 15 years ago. It literally changed my life. I have fond memories of sitting down at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and my "Bonnie" book. Bonnie became like a friend, offering great advice and encouragement. Her writing style is warm and uplifting. She made me want to succeed at organizing my home. I learned how to organize my kitchen cabinets, and ever since my mom has recommended ME to organize the kitchen when someone in the family moves! And I was the family "messy!" Her suggestion on implementing Minimum Maintenance made the difference for me in keeping my house clean and presentable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles as I did with managing all the STUFF/CHORES in her home.
Wonderfully Helpful for the Disorganised Homemaker.......2003-06-06
I just loved this book. I would give it ten stars if I could. It was so full of down to earth and helpful advice and very entertaining to read. There were hints on clutter clearing and how to tackle a home that has got a bit out of control. Lists of daily jobs and what Bonnie calls minimum maintenance were a great help. If you find it hard to keep on top of the house and it seems forever in a cluttered mess (like mine) this is the book for you.

This was a well planned out and I plan to start using it for my everyday expenses.
Helpful Budgeting Basics.......2000-06-08
Over all the book is helpful, and the work sheets are detailed enough to seperate expenses, however, unless you have kept fairly detailed records for several months, you will not be able to accurately complete the worksheets. Be prepared to spend time with prep work before beginning.
Great way to budget your household expenses.......1998-11-19
I have been using this workbook for 5 months and I love it. It helps me get a good view to where our household funds are going. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
I feel cheated!.......2007-09-06
This book is similar in some ways to
Strapped . . ., by T. Draut, another book I have reviewed recently; however, this one is supposed to be more of a self-help guide. Reading through it today, I see the author has a few good tips, but honestly, I cannot imagine that this is actually going to help anyone get out of debt. The best advice she gives is to give up the lattes at Starbucks, but how can giving up something that probably costs about $60.00 a month actually save you a lot of money? For people who have so little anyway, maybe the latte is the only motivation for actually going to a depressing job that pays so little! Also, most of us already in credit card debt are unable to magically get rid of that debt so easily as she claims. Is there a magic wand? Hello! The only answer is consolidation when it's gotten this out of control; remember, because of our current president (who drove his own companies into bankruptcy) now we have to pay back everything to creditors, so now filing for bankruptcy is out of the question. This is just one of several ploys by government (in collaboration with big companies) to make sure they get richer while the middle class and the poor are worse off. Those who should be reading this book should be the very people in politics and big business (actually, they're not really human but Evil Incarnate if you ask me) I just mentioned. In the end, I am sorry, but for all her good intentions, this book isn't going to help the average college graduate get out of debt. I feel cheated.
Quick, Easy resource.......2007-07-02
I LOVED this book! As a college student facing debt from student loans and a particularly difficult case to solve this book helped me out a lot! Quick and easy to read, straight and to the point answers and lots of resources. I recommend it to anyone who needs fast answers on how to get their financial lives in control!
Alright, but definitely not a must-read.......2007-05-15
I bought this book after reading some good reviews, and I wish I paid more attention to the mediocre ones. Admittedly, the book is an easy read, has a good dose of humor and the author relates well to those in their early to mid-20's (mainly because she's a member of this generation). While the book would be useful to high school students and the occasional completely clueless college student, it offers little to no new information to anyone else. (to give perspective, I'm 23 years old, am a recent college grad and am employed full time) Ulrich simply re-stated well known facts - young adults today are broke, they have too many student loans and too much college debt, etc., etc. - and offered cliche advice. There was nothing in this book that I did not already know, i.e. don't default on student loans, pay of high interest credit cards ASAP, and so on and so on. Overall, not a completely useless read, but you're better off borrowing one from the library.
Underrated and Crucial.......2006-11-12
I am 25 and considering my knowledge of this subject matter to be above average. I wish I'd had this in college or even in high school. This book doesn't try to solve your problems but to help you understand what is going on and what can be done about it. I have a brother in college and sister in high school. They will both be getting a copy from me. It is a great reference tool. It's not that the book is groundbreaking, but the author is very good at telling you only what you need to know. She translates everthing for the common person.
Decent, but not a end-all.......2006-08-05
This morning I finished off Generation Debt by Carmen Wong Ulrich and I feel pretty mixed about it. The book starts of very strong by putting all the financial issues facing college students and those who just graduated by putting everything in context. While I've been thinking more and more about student loans and that these are a big deal to start thinking about now, instead of as a post-college concern, this section really showed me the long term impact this is going to have. Even if I have limited means to start paying them off, I can be budgeting much better and be planning for the future.
Unfortunately, this is where the book slows way down. It's all very practical knowledge and I now know what I need to do when I need health insurance, I understand what's happening a bit more in my, albeit, small retirement fund and what I need to consider when I need to upgrade to a new car. However, I didn't come away feeling like I knew how to manage my money very well. The budgeting chapter near the beginning takes a few steps in the right direction, but I think it was generally pretty weak. It does address the philosophical side of finances, it establishes the need vs. want consideration that we should always have in mind when buying things, but it doesn't go much further than that. Sure, there are some handy tips and throughout the book it tells you what you need (insurance, retirement, savings, etc.) but less so on the day-to-day things.
I also started Your Money or Your Life this morning and I suspect this will be much more what I'm looking for. Generation Debt seems like it's the perfect book for know what to do in specific circumstances, but it needs a stronger foundation to build on. Maybe the perfect solution is to read the first chapter of Generation Debt, switch to a book more like Your Money or Your Life and then return to it once you've laid the foundation better. But that's all just speculation.
I'm going to give it 4/5 stars, but it's not an end-all and you should plan on doing some other reading as well.

This book is a fun way to learn about how to manage your finances. If you desire to learn the basics of personal finance in a fun and easy way, this book is for you.
Don't waste your money! .......2005-03-17
This book was a disappointment! It doesn't tell you much that you don't already know, assuming you have a job and are out of your parents' house. I would have learned from it when I was 16, but having already been on my own for 7 years it was a complete waste of time and money. The unfortunate part is that there are a lot of references to drinking and a few about divorce, so it's not even suitable for teenagers. I didn't expect expert advice, but I was expecting some tips and strategies. The best advice I learned from the book...save your money and don't buy it!

Your Money, your choice Mutual Funds.......2002-11-23
I was asked to review an early draft of this book. I'm really glad I did! Like many other people, I'm recently retired, need to stay tuned to the stcok market so that I can keep my "nest egg" wisely invested, but would much rather be outside playing golf, tennis, etc. I want to enjoy every minute of of each day, and the last thing I want to do is study and play the stock market! So, I don't, or at least not nearly as much as I should.
This book was exactly what I needed. I learned a lot more about mutual funds than I had expected to learn and it was written so that I could easily understand it. Subsequently, I'm making changes that will simplify and improve my investment strategies and will allow me to play golf without that little voice in the back of my head telling me that instead, I should be sitting at my desk studying the "market"!
If this all sounds familiar and you can relate to what I'm saying, then read it! You'll be glad you did!
Mutual Funds: Your Money, Your Choice.......2002-11-13
This book is great and I felt that Dr. Jones had written it just for me. He is right, it is my money and my choice to make good investment decisions. After reading the book, I feel like I am ready to avoid the pitfalls and invest in mutual funds. Thank you Dr. Jones for writing a book that even I can understand.
Mutual Funds: Your Money, Your Choice..........2002-10-09
This book is fabulous! Clear and precise, it answered all my questions. Since I am just getting in the investment game, I was pleasantly surprised to find a book so easy to follow for the novice. Kudos to the author! I am really looking forward to Dr. Jones's next book!
Finally a book on mutual funds that I can understand.......2002-10-06
I really don't know much about investing. I even avoided those type of courses in college (majored in the life sciences). But I realize that now that I'm a home-owner and making money I need to do something about my future. I'm not a big fan (at all) of the "For Dummies" series of books, so I wanted something a little more informative but personal. While browsing the books I came across this book and found the layout appealing. With chapter names like "Understanding Mutual Funds: The Nitty-Gritty Details" and "Seduced by the Dark Side" I thought this would hold my attention. Upon browsing the first few pages of some of the chapters I also realized that the author took care to write for a varied audience, which I appreciate since this subject somewhat scares me. All in all: job well done! I have read the book from cover to cover and I even made notes in the margins and bookmarked some of the pages. I'm ready to start investing, and I'm much more confident now! Thanks!!

I will say one thing about Michael Conroy -- he's not a believer in green building unless it's cost-effective, and he's not going to say otherwise. There's no pandering to environmentalists, he is straightforward about who he is and what he's about. If an item or system adds the $$ to his bottom line, he's all for it. That's it, that's the basis of the book. I expected this from the title, but I was still taken aback by the idea that nothing matters except resale value. I guess this is the wrong book for me -- I am looking to remodel for less, but through the use of innovative building materials and smarts gleaned from experts' experiences. Not cost-cutting shortcuts from a braggart interested only in the bottom line at resale time (read his intro).
