Customer Reviews:
So helpful! Fun to read but no fluff and no nonsense!.......2007-08-07
Wedding books can get so fluffy sometimes that, while fun to read, they are rendered practically useless as far as solid information is concerned. This book is a lot of fun to read but it is also very no nonsense. It's organized very well and is packed with ideas, how-to, and tips! I put a summary of each chapter in my planner and refer to it often. This book has become my planning bible!
Fantastic Guide.......2007-03-05
This book really does let you in on some savvy ways to save money. It's also not product driven like bridal bargins is. There are a few names tossed out but it's mostly on letting you know what not to do to let others take advantage of you. The advice on updo's will be followed. Highly recommended!!
Best wedding planning book on the shelf!.......2005-08-09
I've purchased several wedding planning books, but Nina's is the absolute best. She has a fun, witty writing style and offers great tips for scoring the best prices and trendiest extras for your wedding. Don't hire a wedding planner - buy "Wedding Chic"!
Wish I had known about this book sooner!.......2005-08-04
I love this little book! I've been engaged for 6 months now and I just discovered this gem of a book a month ago on a friend's bookshelf. Much of the information was no longer useful in my stage of planning, as I'm getting married in less than 2 months. But, reading over it confirmed that some of the ways my fiance and I went about cutting costs for the wedding were actually done before, and smart. And, just because we've found ways to spend less, doesn't mean our wedding will turn out "cheap." There have been other information useful to me from this point on. It's a really savvy, and stylish. The illustrations are great, too! I've already purchased it for 2 friends who just got engaged.
The Bridezilla's Handbook.......2005-04-05
First off let me start by saying that this book lacks fun. This book approaches weddings like the police approach known criminals. Planning your wedding shouldn't be a bloodsport, it should be fun.
This book does have some great ideas and information on how to save on your wedding costs, but an even greater cost could be your relationship with your vendors, friends, and family.
Everybody wants the best prices possible and should try to get them. Following the guidelines in this book would not be the best method for obtaining that goal. This book teaches you to look down on your wedding vendors and to treat them as an opponent in your way of saving money.
If this is how you will approach your vendors for your special day, you surely will not earn favor with any of them.
If you're the type of person who actually catorgorizes your friends in an "A" list and a "B" list or are so self centered you could have the wedding of your dreams even if you were the only one who attended, this book is right up your alley.
My advice is work with people you're comfortable with and respect at a price you can afford and you will have the most wonderful day of your life.
Save your cash and pass on this book.

tightwad bible.......2006-12-08
Although I have borrowed every other tightwad/money saving book out there from the library, the three editions by this author are a *MUST HAVE*. They are so inspiring when your resolve is slipping. When I bought them, I read them from cover to cover several times. Now, I open to a random page & read until I hit on yet ANOTHER great idea that I didn't absorb in the first reads. The organization is not poor--it is simply different than most books. It isn't arranged into 8 neat little chapters grouped by subject matter, but that is the joy of re-reading the books! For anyone who searches out "tips" online, you will love the organization of this book (and the other two editions).
I don't find her child-rearing to be an issue, either. I have always been a very gentle parent, and she mentioned only a couple things I would not do in my home. Yes, her children have to eat the food she prepares. Would you like to prepare separate meals for 6 children? Yes, her children wear used clothes. That doesn't indicate that they wear dirty clothes or clothes with holes in them. No, she doesn't read a separate book to every one of her 6 kids every night. I wouldn't either! Personally, I don't really like reading 6 kids' books in one day.
Her ideas may be "extreme" if you're easily offended by people who don't speak the status-quo. If you're sick of the constant quest for more, and you don't believe blind consumerism is the answer to every problem, and you want a paradigm shift in your life, this book is for you. If you think Americans had more money sense, family unity, and straight priorities a 130 years ago, this book is definitely for you.
Oh, and if you're not the creative type, you will be after you finish all three Tightwad Gazettes. They literally teach you how to think creatively. That's an invaluable education in and of itself.
A great Dacyczyn.......2005-06-16
Dacyczyn does not encourage us to follow her methods literally; she only suggests looking at our spending habits and realigning them. Spending less money on areas which we consider low-priority leads to higher savings and monre money to spend on things we consider important to us.
don't waste your money.......2004-05-28
This is the third book in the Tightwad Gazette trilogy that I have read. Thank goodness I found it at the library and did not pay for it! I enjoyed the first two books. I got some good ideas from Amy and grinned at the ideas that were too extreme for my family. I respected her choices in life and it helped me to think about the purchases I made and the effect I had on our environment. However, in the T.G. III, I found her to be overbearing, selfish, and a little crazy. She preaches about parents living frugally to enable 1 to stay home with children, however she admits to spending very little time with hers unless they are interested in helping her with her "save money" projects. What about your children's own interests? How about spending a little of all the time you have with them? Her quest for saving has not only shown her ability to spare her pennies, but her time and heart as well. She brags about Not: 1. volunteering 2. reading to her children 3. spending time with family 4. socialize etc. This sounds very lonely to me. I'm afraid that Amy's quest for money has allowed her to become as greedy as the people she condemns as "spendthrifts". At Amy's house, it's all about Amy and what Amy wants.
great resource for the new to thrift crowd.......2004-04-20
I got this book as I was leaving work to become a stay at home mom. I can't say that I will use every idea she recommends but it does have some good ideas in it. For example, it may be cheaper not to coupon solely but to combine it with keeping a price book and only using coupons for items you would buy normally. As far as the editorials on child rearing and the environment go, I simply paged thru that though I don't disagree with her sentiments. I do wish the layout would be more organized but that is solved by simply reading the book and using the index. Not a bad read altogether and quite informative. If you already frugal, this may not tell you anything you don't know. For those of us novices, this is a great start.
Spend the money for this, you'll save a thousand times over.......2004-01-11
I am just starting on the road to learning how to live on less, not because I have to; because I want to. There are some ways to save money listed in the book that I will probably never do, but overall I learned a lot, and enjoyed reading it while I learned. I purchased several other books on the same subject, but none gave me as much usable information as this book did. If you are serious about learning to conserve money, quit reading this review and order the book.

Bonnie's Household Budget Book.......2006-02-01
This was a well planned out and I plan to start using it for my everyday expenses.
Helpful Budgeting Basics.......2000-06-08
Over all the book is helpful, and the work sheets are detailed enough to seperate expenses, however, unless you have kept fairly detailed records for several months, you will not be able to accurately complete the worksheets. Be prepared to spend time with prep work before beginning.
Great way to budget your household expenses.......1998-11-19
I have been using this workbook for 5 months and I love it. It helps me get a good view to where our household funds are going. I highly recommend it.
Wow! I now know where all my money goes........1998-08-24
I bought the Household Budget Book when my credit card debt started piling up. What a difference it has made. It has helped me evaluate where I spend my money. Not only do I record my monthly expenses, income, and investments I can view my yearly living expenses, auto maintenance, and household inventory. I finally save the money monthly I had always promised myself I would. The back provides dollar stretching tips I've found useful. I've just purchased my second copy for next year.I never thought tracking my spending could be so much fun.
Book Description
What's it like living in another country? People have been fascinated by the topic for millennia, accounting for best sellers from Herodotus to Mayle and Mayes. While many readers are satisfied with a vicarious experience, a growing number want to live it for themselves. Elisa Bernick offers readers the book she wished she'd had when she and her husband and children were planning their 18-month family sabbatical.
Customer Reviews:
Very detailed, informative book.......2007-09-21
I was so happy to find this book as I was planning a sabbatical from my university to teach overseas in a developing country with my family. The book is amazingly detailed, and provides lots of great lists that I am comparing with my own lists. The discussion about the benefits about taking the kids abroad is fantastic! I really appreciate the details that the author provides, and the story of their family's extended stay in Mexico. While this book is the best one I've found, it very much is geared toward adults who are planning on taking a complete sabbatical - not people working, volunteering, etc. overseas. The book talks about difficulties in meeting locals, boredom, the excessive socializing with ex-pats, etc. I think a lot of that can be resolved by choosing specifically where you go (perhaps not going to a place with a huge ex-pat community) and giving back to the communities you are living in through working or volunteering with local organizations. A sabbatical doesn't simply need to mean a year of rest - but can also mean a year's break from one's routine. This book is an excellent resource and a delightful read, but the options of a sabbatical year can really be thought of much more broadly than it is portrayed.
A must read on many levels.......2007-07-17
This book is a must read if you are planning a sabbatical or being dragged into one. The FAMILY SABBATICAL BOOK is filled with well-researched information about the nitty-gritty details of what to do, but it is also a well-articulated emotional testament about the journey. Perhaps we'll never take a sabbatical, it is my husband's dream, not really mine. But if indeed we go, I will have a much better handle on preparation. And if we don't make it, I have lived vicariously through the hard work preparation and steep learning curve journey documented in this book. Clearly people who take sabbaticals are way cool...and out of their minds.
Funny, Frank, Entertaining.......2007-05-27
I'm reading this book and saying, "Why didn't I have this book ten years ago??" It answers so many questions and makes the difficult seem entirely possible. It's well-written and a good read, enlightening about foreign travel in general. I often find this kind of "how-to" book sort of clunky and irritating, but this was a joy to read.
Incredibly helpful .......2007-05-25
My family is about to plunge into a year abroad. Although we have a FullBright grant to support it. This book has been invaluable in helping us to think of all the things we would have missed if we did not have the book. Just gathering ideas and reminders has been so helpful. I would reccomend this book to anyone going abroad with kids for more than a month!!
Live your dreams! Practical, entertaining advice for a family adventure.......2007-05-25
Get this book if you are dreaming of a family adventure. I just purchased two more copies for families I know who are thinking of taking the plunge. Our family spent 6 months in Mexico several years ago and treasured every moment, the good, the bad, the ridiculous and the sublime. I wish I could have read this book before I left!!

I can't tell you want a godsend this book has been to me.......1998-10-23
My wife and I squabbled for years over who was spending too much. There never seemed to be enough money, no matter how much we both earned. After reading this book, we were able to budget effectively for this first time. And it doesn't take that much time. What's best is we have more money left over, and we don't argue about money anymore!

Every Servicemember Should Be Issued This Book.......2001-10-28
The Armed Forces Guide to Personal Financial Planning is a must read for soldiers, sailors and airmen. The book begins with chapters on basic personal finance and walks through sections on buying big ticket items (cars, houses, etc..), investing, and planning for retirement. Written uniquely for service members and the different tax and pay considerations they should account for, this book is an invaluable addition to any military bookshelf.
Michael Meese is the new Deputy Head of the Department of Social Sciences and former Director of Economics at West Point. Bart Keiser is also a former Director of Economics at West Point. The Social Sciences faculty is also in the process of writing the 5th Edition, which should be coming out in a few months; so if you can wait, you'll get a more current version. But if you are in the military and are considering major changes to your financial situation in the near term, this book is well worth the investment.
I highly recommend this book for all service members.
