Book Description

This Is Not the Life I Ordered is for anyone who has ever felt overworked, overwhelmed, or just plain unlucky (and, who hasn't?!). Through this collection of stories, wisdom, and practical advice, readers will meet four ordinary women who have faced extraordinary life challenges. Together, they have a history of six marriages, ten children, four stepchildren, six dogs, two miscarriages, two cats, a failed adoption, and foster parenthood. Two have lived through the death of their spouses and one was shot and left for dead on a tarmac in Guyana -- which is documented in "Jonestown" airing on PBS' American Experience

This book started simply with four friends getting together for "kitchen-table coaching sessions" to talk about their lives. Week by week and story by story, they realized their great advice to each other could help other women struggling with life's myriad issues of work, family, and love, as well as the big questions of life and death. For over a decade, the power and strength of their collective friendship enabled these women not only to survive but to thrive. They invite readers to join them to learn how they, too, can turn "misfortunate" events into joy-filled opportunities. Readers will want to share this book with every woman in their lives!

* Authors are best-selling business-book author, Deborah Collins Stephens; Emmy winner Jan Yanehiro; State Senator Jackie Speier; and entrepreneur Michealene Cristini Risley whose Flashcards was screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival.

* Authors' support circle includes Debbi Fields, Kristi Yamaguchi, Danielle Steele, Gerry Laybourne, and other power women.

* Features practical "Wit (Women in Transition) Kit" tips at the end of each chapter to help readers to be their own life coaches.

I found this book to be very helpful as I tried to navigate through a very difficult time in my life. It gave real examples of situations that were much worse than my own, and provided practical ideas for moving forward.

This book is so inspirational! One of the best books I have read! I highly recommend it to all women and men. I plan on getting copies for my family and women friends. Thanks ladies for sharing your life stories and the stories of so many different and unique women. You are all an inspiration! God Bless

5 out of 5 stars It's Not About Being Average.......2007-08-10

Let's face it - we all come to a point where we think, "This is not what I wanted out of life." This book is for anyone who is at that point or has experienced a personal tragedy that has continued to haunt them. Anyone could read this and instantly identify the vast gap between the average American woman and the authors whose personal stories are shared within its pages, but the point of the book is not to point out who has it worse when dealing with bad situations (a new widow in suburbia or a cmpany executive losing a 6-figure income). The point is actually to give you an idea of just how bad things can be and how you can rise above anything. The basic information provided in the "action steps" apply to just about any situation. There are fantastic motivational quotes throughout and excellent ideas for how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going again, no matter what your circumstances. Even if you are feeling negative and pessimistic, this book can help you find positivity and optimism from those people and places that already surround you. I have recommended this book to several friends who have already read and enjoyed it just as much as I did. I returned mine to the library and promptly bought my own copy (as well as a few extras for gifts)!

1 out of 5 stars Did I read the same book as the rest of you?.......2007-07-30

I stumbled across this book while doing research for a book I am writing. I actually wanted to use the same title for a collection of humorous essays, and then felt compelled to read this one. I am only halfway through it and am exhausted from slogging through the overabundance of headings and subheadings in each chapter, the overuse of quotations, and the endless posturing and patronizing from unrelatable situations that so few women will ever face - shot in South America while disbanding a cult, crying over the loss of a $200,000 job, escaping the Khmer Rouge. How is an average American woman supposed to connect with these stories? I am sure every woman mentioned in this book is courageous, intelligent and generous. But the disjointed writing and sloppy editing make it a chore to find their true essence and a message to carry with me. I had such high hopes for this book. I am glad now that I merely borrowed it from the library rather than purchased it. I do enjoy the cartoons, though.

5 out of 5 stars If You're a Woman, You Need This Book!.......2007-07-18

I just finished reading "This is Not the Life I Ordered," by Deborah Collins Stephens, Jackie Speier, Michealene Cristini Risley and Jan Yanehiro and all I can say is get this book!

This book touches every human aspect possible and carves out a whole new way of looking at life. It shows the power of connecting with women on all levels. These four authors weave in their life stories as well as countless other women's life stories into a book that will become your inspiration to get through the hard times, define your life, enrich the lives of others and live your life to the fullest.

It's the kind of book that you will buy for your friends so you can connect with them on a newer, deeper level.

It's the kind of book that you will read over and over again to receive a renewed strength, sense of self and desire to do more, be more and have more.

Book Description

Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us—on every one of them. But the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think!

Download Description

Two works of art help John Ortberg think about the presence of God. One is Michelangelo Buonarroti's brilliant painting of God and Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. God is close. His hand comes within a hair's breath of the hand of the man. It seems to say that God is closer than we think-he's here, now, today, accessible to all who will but "lift a finger." The second work of art is Martin Hanford's cartoon character Waldo. He is on every page of the Where's Waldo? books, but he can be difficult to find. In the same way, even though God is present on every page of our lives, he's often not easy to spot. In God Is Closer Than You Think, John Ortberg examines this frustrating paradox of the Christian life. "When it is so easy to 'see' God all around me (in trees, in birds, in nature) why is it so hard to feel his presence-especially when I need him most?" Ortberg helps readers discover the secret to living daily in the reality of God's most frequent promise in Scripture, "I will be with you."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-07-27

Ortberg is a master. Next to his book, If You Want To Walk On Water, You've Got To Get Out of the Boat, this was as good as it gets for relating to God in our limited human minds. Ortberg has tremendous way of taking ordinary stories, humor and life experiences and making them clear pictures of what Scripture communicates. Excellent, excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Where's Waldo?.......2006-11-10

I purchased this book for a small group setting and it fit the bill perfectly. Ortberg has a way of uncovering truth and in this book, encourages you to find Waldo, a God who wants to be part of your everyday life. I enjoyed it personally, was challenged by it and found the group setting enhanced my learning. I do look for God differently now since I've read the book. He is closer than we think.
I would have kept the orginial jacket cover. It focuses you to the subject matter much better.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-09-23

This book is a pretty decent book if you are interested in a mostly narrative style of discussion on Christian Living. Entertaining, well written, and clear, I would recommend it if you are looking for this type of book.

3 out of 5 stars Don't try so hard!.......2006-07-19

This is a very helpful little book on how to find God in your everyday life. The discussion of Martha & Mary is particularly astute. My only complaint about the book is that Ortberg tries way too hard to be funny and even hip. (This is the first book of his that I've read, so I don't know if he does this all the time or not; I suspect he does.) Humor should be natural, not forced, as it is in this book. His attempts to be hip are merely pathetic. For instance, he quotes the line "The jerk store called & they've run out of you" attributing it to a friend of his. He obviously has no clue it comes from a Seinfeld episode! Still & all, a good book, though, for a Christian at any level.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Convinced!.......2006-04-14

Upon a recommendation from my pastor, I picked this book up and I was not disappointed. John Ortberg writes with a Max Lucado approach. Taking everyday things and making us realize that they too have a place in our spritual walk. He challenges us to look for God in everyday occurences. His premise, as indicated by the title, is that God is more active in our everyday walk than we give Him credit for. In turn, he challenges us to do our part in praying that God bring His Kingdom to earth.

This is a fun book that my daughter and I are reading together. She is 8 and I wanted to teach her some of the Buddhist precepts I find character building. She loves the stories.

5 out of 5 stars Anything by this author is good........2005-08-06

My daughter (2) is a little young for this book yet, but I read it and think it is wonderful for children. If you have children about 6 or older who are having a difficult time or are angry about something, this book would be great. Even if your children are happy though, there are wonderful lessons here for everyone and that can help the world to become a more peaceful place.

5 out of 5 stars Very different.......2002-03-20

While many children's books deal with fiction this book speaks of the reality of here and now. It is thought provoking on a child's level teaching spirituality and awareness. My six year old seems to enjoy listening to the stories.

Book Description

Is the year ahead looking much the same as the last? Another 365-day grind of meetings, dinner dates, and deadlines? If so, try this book.

Part instruction manual, part therapy, part religious cult, part sheer anarchy, This Book Will Change Your Life will help you poke a stick in the spokes of your routine.

It's not the soft-hearted kind of book that's interested in what you have to say; rather it contains 365 daily orders, each one of which could turn your humdrum existence into a daily free-fall.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Get it for the laugh value if nothing else.......2007-10-12

Will this book really change your life if you do every task in it over the course of a year? Probably not - for one thing, in the current homeland-security-above-all-else climate in the US, a number of them are likely to get you maced, tazered, or worse.

But. Who among us can't use a push every now and then to break out of the humdrum routine of our daily lives? Some of the less far out suggestions in this thick paperback can certainly do that! I do think it's overpriced, considering you're supposed to tear out some of the pages in order to complete certain "tasks," but for all that, an entertaining read into the farther reaches of "what if."

4 out of 5 stars Inspiration!.......2007-10-03

Hilariously unique book. Gives you great ideas about life. Not sure I would actually try most of the instructions but it's sure fun to think about what would happen if I did. The illustrations and photography alone are worth getting this book. I consider it one of my nontraditional design references.

5 out of 5 stars Genius!!!!.......2007-08-20

This book absolutely dovetails with my ADD like personality. Each things to do is unique. They don't give you cheesy, boring or obvious things to do like go to the movies, learn a language or make a candlelight dinner for your date instead each one is very specific, interactive and guaranteed to bring instant enlightenment or give a jolt of creativity. For instance, consider the one where they tell you that you are legally entitled to buy a unit of an item from a package like you can open a beer from the box and buy it, and encourage you to do so and test shop owner's legal knowledge. Or how about the one where they tell you to collapse Bangladesh's economy? Or if you are an inventive type then how about that one where you invent punctuation marks. Telling you, this book is one of a kind!

5 out of 5 stars Benrik Fan.......2007-01-02

"This Book Will Change Your Life" may not completely change your life, but just flipping through the pages can still add a little pizazz in your everyday happenings. While the tasks are often extremely goofy--or too out-there to actually complete--I appreciate how it challenges you to live outside the box in small, silly ways: ways that that will make a difference over time or, if anything, make a good story to tell strangers/sinner party guests/your friends/your significant other's parents. (Writing a letter to a mass murderer--as instructed by the book--is a good topic starter/stopper.)

4 out of 5 stars Before this book I was a mere shell of a human being........2006-12-10

This is another cute book-shaped-object for your coffee table. People can flip through it while you're off scraping pate onto fancy crackers. This will perhaps deter them from rummaging through your underwear drawers if you leave them unattended.

Except for Pablo. Pablo is incorrigible and a little perverted. You really should stop inviting him to your dinner parties.

Also check out Do Unto Others: Hilarious Ways to Screw with People's Heads by Heimberg and Gomberg. It's a much smaller book-shaped-object with no pictures but great lists of things you can do when you're feeling brave and/or are exceptionally drunk.

5 out of 5 stars worked for me.......2006-07-29

I admit, I did not take all the supplements and did not fully do the hot and cold showers part, but i did stick with the diet and the fasting. The fasting was hard especially the first day but it actually was a great experience, it is almost like a meditation, you are so concerned with hunger that you actually forget everyhting else in life. My skin improved significantly, acne cleared, and the bagginess under my eyese dissapeared. I did loose around 3 lbs in week, which was definitely a big plus. I had more energy but did not start until the middle of the program. I recommend this program and if you cant follow it all the way, at least stick with the diet and the fasting, since that is all I did and i still had great results.

1 out of 5 stars Expensive and not worth the effort.......2000-11-30

If you go on this week long starve your supplements alone are going to run you $100. Then you have to take 5 handfuls of pills every day. I think the author must have stock in the "Twin Lab" corporation because they are the only ones who carry some of the weirder things you have to take. Also, you have to go without food for 48 hours. Doesn't sound hard but if you have a family it is almost impossible. You also have to take cold/boiling showers and do something called "dry skin brushing". I tried it with an open mind and it did nothing for me. The friend who recommended the book tried it with the thought it was going to solve all her problems, and it helped a great deal. So why not skip the complicated starvation and stuff and just believe that you are going to be helped by something simple?

5 out of 5 stars Disease wake-up call!.......2000-08-22

As a naturopathic student I found the book riveting. Not only do the authors open one's eyes to a whole new way of looking at disease, but they also make one aware of how toxic our lives truly are. The book is very well written with a lot of scientific and medical information that also allows the reader to understand the way in which our bodies work. I would not say it is a cure-all for everyone, even the authors don't lay claim to that title, but I would recommend this book to anyone who lives in an urban environment and feels the strains of everyday life weighing heavily on their health. This book can just save you from that permanent "hung over" feeling every morning.

5 out of 5 stars It's not easy - but it works!.......2000-08-15

The book was recommended to me by my yoga teacher and I have to say I had my reservations. I read the book once and then delved back into it as the science of it began to sink in and make sense to me. I was unsure about a two day fast, fearing I would faint away after the first missed meal. Not so! I didn't feel a single pang of hunger throughout. Having completed my week of de-tox successfully I feel great. I'm sleeping deeply and feel refreshed and rejuvenated upon waking in the morning. An added bonus of this whole de-tox week is that I've lost an inch around my hips and my waist! I would recommend this book to anyone seeking better all-round health and an understanding of how the digestive system works.

5 out of 5 stars 7 Day Detox Miracle.......2000-03-20

In the summer of 1999 I was feeling very sluggish. I could tell that my body was not functioning properly. I have always been "health conscience" and done my best to eat well and take proper supplements. When I would get massages the muscles and the attachements felt like they were on fire. Plus I had a continous ache in my elbow from being a massage therpist and using my arms repeatively over the years. I went to the store looking for something to help me become educated on these symptoms. By chance I picked up this book and immediately saw some encouraging words. I was willing to make the "sacrifice" for seven days. Within two days my elbow eased up in pain. After finishing the program I could tell a tremendous differance. My muscles feel much better, I have more energy and don't have as many urges for poor choices in foods to eat. I did the program again after Christmas and again noticed an improvement. I look forward to doing this program again. Thanks for all your efforts in bringing forth a quality book.

Socrates believed that we should "always be occupied in the practice of dying" in order to appreciate our living. So imagine that you only have one year left to live. What would you do differently? For one year Stephen Levine (also the author of Who Dies?) consciously chose activities, relationships, and spiritual practices that reflected life's urgency rather than life's complacency. From his experience comes this year-long program of strategies and guided meditations to help us feel satiated when our numbers come up. Lessons include "Gratitude," "Disposing of the Corpse," "Finding the Lotus Before Winter," and "Beyond the House of Death."

Book Description

In his new book, Stephen Levine, author of the perennial best-seller Who Dies?, teaches us how to live each moment, each hour, each day mindfully--as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. Most of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore, laugh off, or deny the fact that we are going to die, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us, we will not feel that it has come
too soon.

1 out of 5 stars A Year to Live.......2007-08-17

I felt that since Stephen didn't really have just a year to live, there was something missing here. It seemed to me more of a review of his Yoga presentations.Perhaps he is very laid back, but I think any one knowing they had only one year to live would have done more with his life than just sit back and think how wonderful things were. I'm sorry, but I never got the feeling he was reaching the end.

4 out of 5 stars It's all about living..........2007-01-14

A perspective on life as a gift to be enjoyed, shared and appreciated before we proceed to our next phase of existance, "A Year To Live" offers loving companionship and strength to living our experience here in grateful joy.

4 out of 5 stars HOW TO LIVE EACH MOMENT LIKE YOUR LAST.......2006-08-25

Yes, in this book the author Stephen Levine shows us how to live each moment like our last-- and no it's not depressing...Stephen really lived like this for a year so it's fascinating to see his take on this philosophy. I often use this in making a major decision-- if this was my last year would I? And even in minor decisions that are bothering me -- should I do this today? I love the titles of his chapters including "ALTARING YOUR LIFE"...plus he offers meditations and a year-long plan... I did not get into that stuff-- which some people may feel is too new age...but I did enjoy the philosophy of this book...I keep it on my bookshelf in a special place for days that are really tough or nights that seem like they will never end :))

4 out of 5 stars moving and helpful even for the non-religious.......2005-11-09

I'm not a Buddhist or anything else, and I don't often find "spiritual" reading very accessible, as it often strikes me as vague, abstract, and jargon-y. I didn't think this was the best-written book I've ever read--Mr. Levine, please, please, please look up the definition of "enormity" before you write another word--but I nevertheless found the insights unusually moving and helpful in a practical sense.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Book On Death that is Experiential.......2004-02-14

Levines book differs from most books on death by providing some experiential exercises so the individual can gain personal insight rather then be directly fed the pre-digested great wisdom of so-called experts on death. This along with some of Sylvia Brownes books and 18 Mortal Acts could be used to learn more about ones own mortality and put it in a personal journal. In addition, Mr. Levine makes some sharp penetrating insights into how people deal or don't deal with death. The exercises he advocates are interesting and well constructed. A valuable book for those actively and openly exploring their mortality and who want to go beyond conforming to ideas from experts.

Wonderful book, I like it very much. And this book works. I was very pleased to read it in it's original language. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who wants a good guide.

5 out of 5 stars 7-Day Detox Miracle.......2007-08-10

Very impressed with this detox diet. Easy to do. More than just a detox, it is also a great nutritional and diet guide. Much more reasonable and realistic as a detox, cleansing plan than most.

5 out of 5 stars This book rescued my health.......2007-07-23

After drinking soy milk for 8 years, I found out that I was severely allergic to soy. At 27 years old, I had no energy, could barely walk four short city blocks without feeling dizzy and fatigued, was depressed and lethargic, and became a social recluse. After, of course, eliminating soy from my diet and taking vitamin supplements, I felt slightly better. But this detox program was the only thing that gave me a boost in energy, vitality, and my life back. I did the 2-day fast and hydrotherapy and followed the food and supplement guidelines. I highly recommend this thorough yet concise detox program to anyone and everyone. You will feel so much better in every way for doing it. To health, happiness, and vitality!

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me........2007-07-14

I wasn't really feeling a need for a full detox, my concern was my cholesterol. My doctor was referring me to a stroke and heart attack prevention clinic. I knew I had to do something and taking prescription medication (poison) was not a desirable "solution".

I had previously heard of this book from a hiking friend who recommended it whole heartedly, so I figured it was worth a try. I did not do the fasting nor the hydro therepy (I think the Geneva conventions and ASPCA would frown on the latter).

I did faithfully follow the diet plan. This included eating 100% vegan and consuming no coffee, black tea, chocolate or alchohol for 12 days. Since then I have included fish and lesser amounts of coffee and alchohol than I consumed in the past.

The good news is my Dr. called today with my cholesterol results and CANCELLED my appointment with the stroke and heart attack clinic because the results were so profoundly improved!

The book has sample meal plans and easy to follow recipes. The meals taste good and you don't go hungry (unless you do the two day fast). An added benefit was getting my weight down about 7 lbs (5%) and reducing my bmi a couple percent.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest tool to revitalize your body.......2007-06-03

Great, great book.

We did detoxification according to they suggested and my weight loss became quite faster. My energy and metabolism increased tremendously.
My back pain is gone.

It helped my husband finding his allergies. So, now whenever he gets any signs of allergies, he wants to do detoxification. He does once a year. His allergies go away due to this program for almost a year or so.

Many of our friends got interested after seeing our success and now they do it too.

My primary care physician started recommending to her patients.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I guess I am a below average Christian.......2007-05-04

Comments from commenter #2 crack me up. I have heard many folks refer to John Ortberg as "Dallas Willard Lite" or "Dallas for dummies." I have had the opportunity to spend time with both the author and his wife, and I find both his speaking and writing to be very refreshing to my mind, spirit and life. I find John's writing simple and practical. Is it Dallas Willard deep? No. However, it's more like a great message that you hear in a weekend service. One that you can see clearly how applicable it is. Also, for you to get the most out of this book, you need to have a sense of your own brokenness and fallenness. Otherwise, you will find it simple and for average or below average people.........which, if I recall, is the same peeps that Jesus TOTALLY hung out with and loved deeply. In fact, some of their names were Peter, James, John, Andrew, Thomas..............

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Small Group Bible Study.......2007-01-06

Not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. I have been a Christian for years and am finding this study quite interesting. Ortberg is the moderator and is excellent at word pictures that stick with you. The study makes you dig into the Bible which is what you want in a small group. Studying on your own in between group meetings requires quite a bit of scripture look up and reading. There are great discussion questions. This study has definitely strengthened my walk with the Lord. Our entire small group really enjoys the DVD part and is getting alot out of the study. I highly recommend this for small group study.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing but fun reading .......2006-10-06

This book is okay for fun reading. The observations offered by the author are slightly entertaining, and may be even quite insightful to the very easily-impressed and motivated readers. For example, using conductor and resistor as analogy is misrepresenting the physics and meaning of the scientific terms. The counterpart of conductor is insulator. Actually a resistor in an electrical circuit is the part that does all the work - that makes the light bulbs or pickle glow, for instance.

Using surfing as an example of overcoming failure is okay. However sidetracking to muse about sharks and dolphins is juvenile and distracting.

I suppose this book is targeted for the average person and below for marketing purpose

2 out of 5 stars God Is Closer Than You Think.......2005-10-08

I believe I was mislead. I ordered the material. The description described that I would get the DVD, the Participant's guide and the hardcover book for the price of the item. When just the DVD arrived I felt disappointed.

My teenage girl's youth group at church are reading this book and studying the Book of Esther. As their teacher, this book has been a wonderful learning tool and really opened the girls up to share their personal stories of what it's like to be a teenage girl in America today. They really enjoy Lisa's writing and have already asked to do another of her books in class. Thanks, Lisa for your book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-11-06

This book is written for the middle school ag.. hence the reason that the slang is so far off... (as noted in the previous reveiw) It is a great book about becoming a modern day Esther.

4 out of 5 stars Esther 101.......2002-04-30

Esther's story is my favorite story in the Bible. She was a very strong woman who was fearless (she was not afriad to be herself). Lisa Ryan has done a great job applying this fabulous story to life as a young woman today. I found that the writing was somewhat silly (Mrs. Ryan sometimes used slang never spoken by anyone outside of middle school), but the message was awesome. Every girl should read this book!
